We construct, analyse and assess various schemes of second order of accuracy in space and time for model advection-diffusion-reaction differential equations. The constructed schemes are meant to be of practical use in solving industrial problems and are derived following two related approaches, namely ADER and MUSCL-Hancock. Detailed analysis of linear stability and local truncation error are carried out. In addition, the schemes are implemented and assessed for various test problems. Empirical convergence rate studies confirm the theoretically expected accuracy in both space and time.

Space-time adaptive ADER-DG finite element method with LST-DG predictor and a posteriori sub-cell WENO finite-volume limiting for simulation of non-stationary compressible multicomponent reactive flows
We are concerned with the numerical solution of a unified first order hyperbolic formulation of continuum mechanics that originates from the work of Godunov, Peshkov and Romenski (GPR model) and which is an extension of nonlinear hyperelasticity that is able to describe simultaneously nonlinear elasto-plastic solids at large strain, as well as viscous and ideal fluids. The proposed governing PDE system also contains the effect of heat conduction and can be shown to be symmetric and thermodynamically compatible. In this paper we extend the GPR model to the simulation of nonlinear dynamic ruptur…
A priori analysis for a generalized local projection stabilized finite element approximations for the solution of an advection-reaction equation is presented in this article. The stability and a priori error estimates are established for both the conforming and the nonconforming (Crouzeix-Raviart) approximations with respect to the local projection streamline derivative norm. Finally, the validation of the proposed stabilization scheme and verification of the the derived estimates are presented with appropriate numerical experiments.
In this paper we investigate the numerical approximation of the fractional diffusion, advection, reaction equation on a bounded interval. Recently the explicit form of the solution to this equation was obtained. Using the explicit form of the boundary behavior of the solution and Jacobi polynomials, a Petrov-Galerkin approximation scheme is proposed and analyzed. Numerical experiments are presented which support the theoretical results, and demonstrate the accuracy and optimal convergence of the approximation method.
In this paper we investigate the variable coefficient two-sided fractional diffusion, advection, reaction equations on a bounded interval. It is known that the fractional diffusion operator may lose coercivity due to the variable coefficient, which makes both the mathematical and numerical analysis challenging. To resolve this issue, we design appropriate test and trial functions to prove the inf-sup condition of the variable coefficient fractional diffusion, advection, reaction operators in suitable function spaces. Based on this property, we prove the well-posedness and regularity of the sol…
We propose a second order, fully semi-Lagrangian method for the numerical solution of systems of advection-diffusion-reaction equations, which employs a semi-Lagrangian approach to approximate in time both the advective and the diffusive terms. Standard interpolation procedures are used for the space discretization on structured and unstructured meshes. The proposed method allows for large time steps, while avoiding the solution of large linear systems, which would be required by an implicit time discretization technique. Numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed appr…
We study the computation of coupled advection-diffusion-reaction equations by the Schwarz waveform relaxation method. The study starts with linear equations, and it analyzes the convergence of the computation with a Dirichlet condition, a Robin condition, and a combination of them as the transmission conditions. Then, an optimized algorithm for the Dirichlet condition is presented to accelerate the convergence, and numerical examples show a substantial speedup in the convergence. Furthermore, the optimized algorithm is extended to the computation of nonlinear equations, including the viscous B…
The aim of this study is to compare numerical methods for the simulation of single-phase flow and transport in fractured media, described here by means of the Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) model. A Darcy problem is solved to compute the advective field, then used in a subsequent time dependent transport-diffusion-reaction problem. The numerical schemes are benchmarked in terms of flexibility in handling geometrical complexity, mass conservation and stability issues for advection dominated flow regimes. To this end, three benchmark cases have been specifically designed and are here proposed, …

In this paper, we propose to improve the stabilized POD-ROM introduced by S. Rubino in [37] to deal with the numerical simulation of advection-dominated advection-diffusion-reaction equations. In particular, we introduce a stabilizing post-processing strategy that will be very useful when considering very low diffusion coefficients, i.e. in the strongly advection-dominated regime. This strategy is applied both for the offline phase, to produce the snapshots, and the reduced order method to simulate the new solutions. The new process of a posteriori stabilization is detailed in a general framew…
This paper develops a physics-informed neural network (PINN) based on the Schwarz waveform relaxation (SWR) method for solving local and nonlocal advection-diffusion-reaction equations. Specifically, we derive the formulation by constructing subdomain-dependent local solutions by minimizing local loss functions, allowing the decomposition of the training process in different domains in an embarrassingly parallel procedure. Provided the convergence of PINN, the overall proposed algorithm is convergent. By constructing local solutions, one can, in particular, adapt the depth of the deep neural n…
A stochastic method is described for estimating Green's functions (GF's), appropriate to linear advection-diffusion-reaction transport problems, evolving in arbitrary geometries. By allowing straightforward construction of approximate, though high-accuracy GF's, within any geometry, the technique solves the central challenge in obtaining Green's function solutions. In contrast to Monte Carlo solutions of individual transport problems, subject to specific sets of conditions and forcing, the proposed technique produces approximate GF's that can be used: a) to obtain (infinite) sets of solutions,…

We present and analyze a novel wavelet-Fourier technique for the numerical treatment of multidimensional advection-diffusion-reaction equations based on the CORSING (COmpRessed SolvING) paradigm. Combining the Petrov-Galerkin technique with the compressed sensing approach, the proposed method is able to approximate the largest coefficients of the solution with respect to a biorthogonal wavelet basis. Namely, we assemble a compressed discretization based on randomized subsampling of the Fourier test space and we employ sparse recovery techniques to approximate the solution to the PDE. In this p…
This article presents stability and convergence analyses of subgrid multiscale stabilized finite element formulation of non-Newtonian power-law fluid flow model strongly coupled with variable coefficients Advection-Diffusion-Reaction ($VADR$) equation. Considering the highly non-linear viscosity coefficient as solute concentration dependent makes the coupling two way. The stabilized formulation of the transient coupled system is developed based upon time dependent subscales, which ensures inherent consistency of the method. The proposed algebraic expressions of the stabilization parameters app…
We present a robust computational framework for advective-diffusive-reactive systems that satisfies maximum principles, the non-negative constraint, and element-wise species balance property. The proposed methodology is valid on general computational grids, can handle heterogeneous anisotropic media, and provides accurate numerical solutions even for very high Péclet numbers. The significant contribution of this paper is to incorporate advection (which makes the spatial part of the differential operator non-self-adjoint) into the non-negative computational framework, and overcome numerical cha…
A study is presented on the convergence of the computation of coupled advection-diffusion-reaction equations. In the computation, the equations with different coefficients and even types are assigned in two subdomains, and Schwarz iteration is made between the equations when marching from a time level to the next one. The analysis starts with the linear systems resulting from the full discretization of the equations by explicit schemes. Conditions for convergence are derived, and its speedup and the effects of difference in the equations are discussed. Then, it proceeds to an implicit scheme, …
We develop novel stabilized cut discontinuous Galerkin (CutDG) methods for advection-reaction problems. The domain of interest is embedded into a structured, unfitted background mesh in $\mathbb{R}^d$ where the domain boundary can cut through the mesh in an arbitrary fashion. To cope with robustness problems caused by small cut elements, we introduce ghost penalties in the vicinity of the embedded boundary to stabilize certain (semi)-norms associated with the advection and reaction operator. A few abstract assumptions on the ghost penalties are identified enabling us to derive geometrically ro…
We present a new hyperviscosity formulation for stabilizing radial basis function-finite difference (RBF-FD) discretizations of advection-diffusion-reaction equations on manifolds $\mathbb{M} \subset \mathbb{R}^3$ of co-dimension one. Our technique involves automatic addition of artificial hyperviscosity to damp out spurious modes in the differentiation matrices corresponding to surface gradients, in the process overcoming a technical limitation of a recently-developed Euclidean formulation. Like the Euclidean formulation, the manifold formulation relies on von Neumann stability analysis perfo…
Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) were recently proposed in [1] as an alternative way to solve partial differential equations (PDEs). A neural network (NN) represents the solution while a PDE-induced NN is coupled to the solution NN, and all differential operators are treated using automatic differentiation. Here, we first employ the standard PINN and a stochastic version, sPINN, to solve forward and inverse problems governed by a nonlinear advection-diffusion-reaction (ADR) equation, assuming we have some sparse measurements of the concentration field at random or pre-selected location…
We propose a novel family of asymptotically stable, implicit-explicit, adaptive, time integration method (denoted with the $θ$-method) for the solution of the fractional advection-diffusion-reaction (FADR) equations. This family of time integration method generalized the computationally explicit $L_1$-method adopted by Brunner (J. Comput. Phys. {\bf 229} 6613-6622 (2010)) as well as the fully implicit method proposed by Jannelli (Comm. Nonlin. Sci. Num. Sim., {\bf 105}, 106073 (2022)). The spectral analysis of the method (involving the group velocity and the phase speed) indicates a region of …
In this paper, we describe a stable finite element formulation for advection-diffusion-reaction problems that allows for robust automatic adaptive strategies to be easily implemented. We consider locally vanishing, heterogeneous, and anisotropic diffusivities, as well as advection-dominated diffusion problems. The general stabilized finite element framework was described and analyzed in arXiv:1907.12605v3 for linear problems in general, and tested for pure advection problems. The method seeks for the discrete solution through a residual minimization process on a proper stable discontinuous Gal…
In this paper we have studied subgrid multiscale stabilized formulation with dynamic subscales for non-Newtonian Casson fluid flow model tightly coupled with variable coefficients ADR ($VADR$) equation. The Casson viscosity coefficient is taken to be dependent upon solute mass concentration. This paper presents the stability and convergence analyses of the stabilized finite element solution. The proposed expressions of the stabilization parameters helps in obtaining optimal order of convergences. Appropriate numerical experiments have been provided.
In this paper, by employing the asymptotic expansion method, we prove the existence and uniqueness of a smoothing solution for a time-dependent nonlinear singularly perturbed partial differential equation (PDE) with a small-scale parameter. As a by-product, we obtain an approximate smooth solution, constructed from a sequence of reduced stationary PDEs with vanished high-order derivative terms. We prove that the accuracy of the constructed approximate solution can be in any order of this small-scale parameter in the whole domain, except a negligible transition layer. Furthermore, based on a si…
A new semi-analytical solution to the advection-dispersion-reaction equation for modelling solute transport in layered porous media is derived using the Laplace transform. Our solution approach involves introducing unknown functions representing the dispersive flux at the interfaces between adjacent layers, allowing the multilayer problem to be solved separately on each layer in the Laplace domain before being numerically inverted back to the time domain. The derived solution is applicable to the most general form of linear advection-dispersion-reaction equation, a finite medium comprising an …
We analyse a PDE system modelling poromechanical processes (formulated in mixed form using the solid deformation, fluid pressure, and total pressure) interacting with diffusing and reacting solutes in the medium. We investigate the well-posedness of the nonlinear set of equations using fixed-point theory, Fredholm's alternative, a priori estimates, and compactness arguments. We also propose a mixed finite element method and rigorously demonstrate the stability of the scheme. Error estimates are derived in suitable norms, and numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate the mechano-chemica…
This paper studies least-squares ReLU neural network method for solving the linear advection-reaction problem with discontinuous solution. The method is a discretization of an equivalent least-squares formulation in the set of neural network functions with the ReLU activation function. The method is capable of approximating the discontinuous interface of the underlying problem automatically through the free hyper-planes of the ReLU neural network and, hence, outperforms mesh-based numerical methods in terms of the number of degrees of freedom. Numerical results of some benchmark test problems …

We present an advection-pressure flux-vector splitting method for the one and two- dimensional shallow water equations following the approach first proposed by Toro and Vázquez for the compressible Euler equations. The resulting first-order schemes turn out to be exceedingly simple, with accuracy and robustness comparable to that of the sophisticated Godunov upwind method used in conjunction with complete non- linear Riemann solvers. The technique splits the full system into two subsystems, namely an advection system and a pressure system. The sought numerical flux results from fluxes for each…
