We are concerned with the numerical solution of a unified first order hyperbolic formulation of continuum mechanics that originates from the work of Godunov, Peshkov and Romenski (GPR model) and which is an extension of nonlinear hyperelasticity that is able to describe simultaneously nonlinear elasto-plastic solids at large strain, as well as viscous and ideal fluids. The proposed governing PDE system also contains the effect of heat conduction and can be shown to be symmetric and thermodynamically compatible.
In this paper we extend the GPR model to the simulation of nonlinear dynamic rupture processes and material fatigue effects, by adding a new scalar variable to the governing PDE system. This extra parameter describes the material damage and is governed by an advection-reaction equation, where the stiff and highly nonlinear reaction mechanisms depend on the ratio of the local von Mises stress to the yield stress of the material. The stiff reaction mechanisms are integrated in time via an efficient exponential time integrator. Due to the multiple space-time scales, the model is solved on space-time adaptive Cartesian meshes using high order discontinuous Galerkin finite element schemes with a posteriori subcell finite volume limiting.
A key feature of our new model is the use of a twofold diffuse interface approach that allows the cracks to form anywhere and at any time, independently of the chosen computational grid, without requiring that the geometry of the rupture fault be known a priori. We furthermore make use of a scalar volume fraction function that indicates whether a given point is inside the solid or outside, allowing the description of solids of arbitrarily complex shape.
In this paper, we develop a fully discrete entropy preserving ADER-Discontinuous Galerkin (ADER-DG) method. To obtain this desired result, we equip the space part of the method with entropy correction terms that balance the entropy production in space, inspired by the work of Abgrall. Whereas for the time-discretization we apply the relaxation approach introduced by Ketcheson that allows to modify the timestep to preserve the entropy to machine precision. Up to our knowledge, it is the first time that a provable fully discrete entropy preserving ADER-DG scheme is constructed. We verify our the…
In this paper we first review the development of high order ADER finite volume and ADER discontinuous Galerkin schemes on fixed and moving meshes, since their introduction in 1999 by Toro et al. We show the modern variant of ADER based on a space-time predictor-corrector formulation in the context of ADER discontinuous Galerkin schemes with a posteriori subcell finite volume limiter on fixed and moving grids, as well as on space-time adaptive Cartesian AMR meshes. We then present and discuss the unified symmetric hyperbolic and thermodynamically compatible (SHTC) formulation of continuum mecha…
Very high order treatment of embedded curved boundaries in compressible flows: ADER discontinuous Galerkin with a space-time Reconstruction for Off-site data
针对非贴合网格上弯曲边界的高阶边界条件一致性难题,将 ROD 融入 ADER 间断 Galerkin 的时空预测器,实现单次时空多项式重构,并通过后验限制支持激波与弯曲边界相互作用计算。
In this paper, we demonstrate that the explicit ADER approach as it is used inter alia in [1] can be seen as a special interpretation of the deferred correction (DeC) method as introduced in [2]. By using this fact, we are able to embed ADER in a theoretical background of time integration schemes and prove the relation between the accuracy order and the number of iterations which are needed to reach the desired order. Next, we extend our investigation to stiff ODEs, treating these source terms implicitly. Some differences in the interpretation and implementation can be found. Using DeC yields …
Solving the relativistic magnetohydrodynamics equations with ADER discontinuous Galerkin methods, a posteriori subcell limiting and adaptive mesh refinement
In this paper, we propose a unified and high order accurate fully-discrete one-step ADER Discontinuous Galerkin method for the simulation of linear seismic waves in the sea bottom that are generated by the propagation of free surface water waves. A hyperbolic reformulation of the Serre-Green-Naghdi model for nonlinear dispersive free surface flows is coupled with a first order velocity-stress formulation for linear elastic wave propagation in the sea bottom. Cartesian non-conforming meshes are defined and the coupling is achieved by an appropriate time-dependent pressure boundary condition in …
We use the augmented Lagrangian formalism to derive discontinuous Galerkin formulations for problems in nonlinear elasticity. In elasticity stress is typically a symmetric function of strain, leading to symmetric tangent stiffness matrices in Newtons method when conforming finite elements are used for discretization. By use of the augmented Lagrangian framework, we can also obtain symmetric tangent stiffness matrices in discontinuous Galerkin methods. We suggest two different approaches and give examples from plasticity and from large deformation hyperelasticity.
In this work, we introduce two novel reformulations of a recent weakly hyperbolic model for two-phase flow with surface tension. In the model, the tracking of phase boundaries is achieved by using a vector interface field, rather than a scalar tracer, so that the surface-force stress tensor can be expressed as an algebraic function of the state variables, without requiring the computation of gradients of the tracer. An interesting and important feature of the model is that this interface field obeys a curl involution constraint, that is, the vector field is required to be curl-free at all time…

We present the first high order one-step ADER-WENO finite volume scheme with Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) in multiple space dimensions. High order spatial accuracy is obtained through a WENO reconstruction, while a high order one-step time discretization is achieved using a local space-time discontinuous Galerkin predictor method. Due to the one-step nature of the underlying scheme, the resulting algorithm is particularly well suited for an AMR strategy on space-time adaptive meshes, i.e.with time-accurate local time stepping. The AMR property has been implemented 'cell-by-cell', with a stan…
We propose a new high order accurate nodal discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for the solution of nonlinear hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations (PDE) on unstructured polygonal Voronoi meshes. Rather than using classical polynomials of degree N inside each element, in our new approach the discrete solution is represented by piecewise continuous polynomials of degree N within each Voronoi element, using a continuous finite element basis defined on a subgrid inside each polygon. We call the resulting subgrid basis an agglomerated finite element (AFE) basis for the DG method on ge…

We study in this paper three variants of the high-order Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method with Runge-Kutta (RK) time integration for the induction equation, analysing their ability to preserve the divergence free constraint of the magnetic field. To quantify divergence errors, we use a norm based on both a surface term, measuring global divergence errors, and a volume term, measuring local divergence errors. This leads us to design a new, arbitrary high-order numerical scheme for the induction equation in multiple space dimensions, based on a modification of the Spectral Difference (SD) metho…
Discontinuous Galerkin schemes for hyperbolic systems in non-conservative variables: quasi-conservative formulation with subcell finite volume corrections
In this paper the projection hybrid FV/FE method presented in Busto et al. 2014 is extended to account for species transport equations. Furthermore, turbulent regimes are also considered thanks to the $k-\varepsilon$ model. Regarding the transport diffusion stage new schemes of high order of accuracy are developed. The CVC Kolgan-type scheme and ADER methodology are extended to 3D. The latter is modified in order to profit from the dual mesh employed by the projection algorithm and the derivatives involved in the diffusion term are discretized using a Galerkin approach. The accuracy and stabil…

We present a stable discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method with a perfectly matched layer (PML) for three and two space dimensional linear elastodynamics, in velocity-stress formulation, subject to well-posed linear boundary conditions. First, we consider the elastodynamics equation, in a cuboidal domain, and derive an unsplit PML truncating the domain using complex coordinate stretching. Leveraging the hyperbolic structure of the underlying system, we construct continuous energy estimates, in the time domain for the elastic wave equation, and in the Laplace space for a sequence of PML model probl…
In this work, we consider the general family of the so called ADER PNPM schemes for the numerical solution of hyperbolic partial differential equations with \textit{arbitrary} high order of accuracy in space and time. The family of one-step PNPM schemes was introduced in [Dumbser et al., JCP, 2008] and represents a unified framework for classical high order Finite Volume (FV) schemes (N=0), the usual Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods (N=M), as well as a new class of intermediate hybrid schemes for which a reconstruction operator of degree M is applied over piecewise polynomial data of degree…
