Optically addressable solid-state defects are emerging as one of the most promising qubit platforms for quantum networks. Maximizing photon-defect interaction by nanophotonic cavity coupling is key to network efficiency. We demonstrate fabrication of gallium phosphide 1-D photonic crystal waveguide cavities on a silicon oxide carrier and subsequent integration with implanted silicon-vacancy (SiV) centers in diamond using a stamp-transfer technique. The stamping process avoids diamond etching and allows fine-tuning of the cavities prior to integration. After transfer to diamond, we measure cavity quality factors ($Q$) of up to 8900 and perform resonant excitation of single SiV centers coupled to these cavities. For a cavity with $Q$ of 4100, we observe a three-fold lifetime reduction on-resonance, corresponding to a maximum potential cooperativity of $C = 2$. These results indicate promise for high photon-defect interaction in a platform which avoids fabrication of the quantum defect host crystal.
The zero-phonon transition rate of a nitrogen-vacancy center is enhanced by a factor of ~70 by coupling to a photonic crystal resonator fabricated in monocrystalline diamond using standard semiconductor fabrication techniques. Photon correlation measurements on the spectrally filtered zero-phonon line show antibunching, a signature that the collected photoluminescence is emitted primarily by a single nitrogen-vacancy center. The linewidth of the coupled nitrogen-vacancy center and the spectral diffusion are characterized using high-resolution photoluminescence and photoluminescence excitation …
We propose an experiment to generate deterministic entanglement between separate nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers mediated by the mode of a photonic crystal cavity. Using numerical simulations the applicability and robustness of the entanglement operation to parameter regimes achievable with present technology is investigated. We find that even with moderate cavity Q-factors of $10^{4}$ a concurrence of $c>0.6$ can be achieved within a time of $t_{max}\approx150$~ns, while Q-factors of $10^{5}$ promise $c>0.8$. Most importantly, the investigated scheme is relative insensitive to spectral diffusio…
Constructing compact quantum circuits for universal quantum gates on solid-state systems is crucial for quantum computing. We present some compact quantum circuits for a deterministic solid-state quantum computing, including the CNOT, Toffoli, and Fredkin gates on the diamond nitrogen-vacancy centers confined inside cavities, achieved by some input-output processes of a single photon. Our quantum circuits for these universal quantum gates are simple and economic. Moreover, additional electron qubits are not employed, but only a single-photon medium. These gates have a long coherent time. We di…
We study the phenomenon of controllable localization-delocalization transition in a quantum many-body system composed of nitrogen-vacancy centers coupled to photonic crystal cavities, through tuning the different detunings and the relative amplitudes of two optical fields that drive two nondegenerate transitions of the $Λ$-type configuration. We not only characterize how dissipation affects the phase boundary using the mean-field quantum master equation, but also provide the possibility of observing this photonic quantum phase transition (QPT) by employing several experimentally observable qua…
We investigate the non-Markovian dynamics of quantum correlation between two initially entangled nitrogen-vacancy centers (NVC) embedded in photonic crystal cavities (PCC). We find that a finite quantum correlation is preserved even asymptotically when the transition frequency of the NVC is within the band gap of the PCC, which is quantitatively different from the result of approaching zero under the Born-Markovian approximation. In addition, once the transition frequency of NVC is far beyond the band gap of the PCC, the quantum correlation initially prepared in NVC will be fully transferred t…
Master equation-based model for infrared-based magnetometry with nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond cavities: a path to sub-picotesla sensitivity at sub-millimeter scales
The nitrogen vacancy center in diamond in its negative charge state is a promising candidate for quantum optic experiments that require single photon emitters. Important benefits of the NV center are its high brightness and photo-stability, even at room temperature. Engineering the emission properties of NV centers with optical resonators is a widely followed approach to meet the requirements for quantum technological applications, but the effect on non-radiative decay paths is yet to be understood. Here we report on modifying the internal quantum efficiency of a single NV center in a nanodiam…

Si3N4 is an excellent material for applications of nanophotonics at visible wavelengths due to its wide bandgap and moderately large refractive index (n $\approx$ 2.0). We present the fabrication and characterization of Si3N4 photonic crystal nanobeam cavities for coupling to diamond nanocrystals and Nitrogen-Vacancy centers in a cavity QED system. Confocal micro-photoluminescence analysis of the nanobeam cavities demonstrates quality factors up to Q ~ 55,000, which is limited by the resolution of our spectrometer. We also demonstrate coarse tuning of cavity resonances across the 600-700nm ran…
Single crystal diamond membranes that host optically active emitters are highly attractive components for integrated quantum nanophotonics. In this work we demonstrate bottom-up synthesis of single crystal diamond membranes containing the germanium vacancy (GeV) color centers. We employ a lift-off technique to generate the membranes and perform chemical vapour deposition in a presence of germanium oxide to realize the insitu doping. Finally, we show that these membranes are suitable for engineering of photonic resonators such as microring cavities with quality factors of 1500. The robust and s…
The development of solid-state photonic quantum technologies is of great interest for fundamental studies of light-matter interactions and quantum information science. Diamond has turned out to be an attractive material for integrated quantum information processing due to the extraordinary properties of its colour centres enabling e.g. bright single photon emission and spin quantum bits. To control emitted photons and to interconnect distant quantum bits, micro-cavities directly fabricated in the diamond material are desired. However, the production of photonic devices in high-quality diamond …
We present the design and fabrication of nanobeam photonic crystal cavities in single crystal diamond for applications in cavity quantum electrodynamics. First, we describe three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulations of a high quality factor (Q ~ 10^6) and small mode volume (V ~ 0.5 (λ/n)^3) device whose cavity resonance corresponds to the zero-phonon transition (637nm) of the Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) color center in diamond. This high Q/V structure, which would allow for strong light-matter interaction, is achieved by gradually tapering the size of the photonic crystal holes betw…
Highly efficient sources of indistinguishable single photons that can operate at room temperature would be very beneficial for many applications in quantum technology. We show that the implementation of such sources is a realistic goal using solid-state emitters and ultrasmall mode volume cavities. We derive and analyze an expression for photon indistinguishability that accounts for relevant detrimental effects, such as plasmon-induced quenching and pure-dephasing. We then provide the general cavity and emitter conditions required to achieve efficient indistinguishable photon emission, and als…
We present the controlled creation of single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers via ion implantation at the center of a photonic crystal cavity which is fabricated in an ultrapure, single crystal diamond membrane. High-resolution placement of NV centers is achieved using collimation of a 5keV-nitrogen ion beam through a pierced tip of an atomic force microscope (AFM). We demonstrate coupling of the implanted NV centers' broad band fluorescence to a cavity mode and observe Purcell enhancement of the spontaneous emission. The results are in good agreement with a master equation model for the cavity c…
To take existing quantum optical experiments and devices into more practical regimes requires the construction of robust, solid-state implementations. In particular, to observe the strong-coupling regime of atom-photon interactions requires very small cavities and large quality factors. Here we show that the slot-waveguide geometry recently introduced for photonic applications is also promising for quantum optical applications in the visible regime. We study diamond- and GaP-based slot-waveguide cavities (SWCs) compatible with diamond colour centres e.g. nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect, and show …
Color centers in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) are becoming an increasingly important building block for quantum photonic applications. Herein, we demonstrate the efficient coupling of recently discovered spin defects in hBN to purposely designed bullseye cavities. We show that the all monolithic hBN cavity system exhibits an order of magnitude enhancement in the emission of the coupled boron vacancy spin defects. In addition, by comparative finite difference time domain modelling, we shed light on the emission dipole orientation, which has not been experimentally demonstrated at this point. B…
The principle of superposition is a key ingredient for quantum mechanics. A recent work [M. Oszmaniec et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 110403 (2016)] has shown that a quantum adder that deterministically generates a superposition of two unknown states is forbidden. Here we propose a probabilistic approach for creating a superposition state of two arbitrary states encoded in two three-dimensional cavities. Our implementation is based on a three-level superconducting transmon qubit dispersively coupled to two cavities. Numerical simulations show that high-fidelity generation of the superposition of…
Ultrafast emission rates obtained from quantum emitters coupled to plasmonic nanoantennas have recently opened fundamentally new possibilities in quantum information and sensing applications. Plasmonic nanoantennas greatly improve the brightness of quantum emitters by dramatically shortening their fluorescence lifetimes. Gap plasmonic nanocavities that support strongly confined modes are of particular interest for such applications. We demonstrate single-photon emission from nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in nanodiamonds coupled to nanosized gap plasmonic cavities with internal mode volumes abo…
Diamond membrane devices containing optically coherent nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers are key to enable novel cryogenic experiments such as optical ground-state cooling of hybrid spin-mechanical systems and efficient entanglement distribution in quantum networks. We fabricate this sample via a combination of high energy electron irradiation, high temperature annealing…
We report the optimisation of optical properties of single defects in three-dimensional (3D) face-centred-cubic (FCC) woodpile photonic crystal (PC) cavities by using plane-wave expansion (PWE) and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) methods. By optimising the dimensions of a 3D woodpile PC, wide photonic band gaps (PBG) are created. Optical cavities with resonances in the bandgap arise when point defects are introduced in the crystal. Three types of single defects are investigated in high refractive index contrast (Gallium Phosphide-Air) woodpile structures and Q-factors and mode volumes ($V…
The transfer of quantum entanglement (or quantum coherence) is not only fundamental in quantum mechanics but also important in quantum information processing. We here propose a way to achieve the coherent transfer of $W$-class entangled states of qubits among different cavities. Because no photon is excited in each cavity, decoherence caused by the photon decay is suppressed during the transfer. In addition, only one coupler qubit and one operational step are needed and no classical pulses are used in this proposal, thus the engineering complexity is much reduced and the operation is greatly s…
Point defects in silicon carbide are rapidly becoming a platform of great interest for single photon generation, quantum sensing, and quantum information science. Photonic crystal cavities (PCC) can serve as an efficient light-matter interface both to augment the defect emission and to aid in studying the defects' properties. In this work, we fabricate 1D nanobeam PCCs in 4H-silicon carbide with embedded silicon vacancy centers. These cavities are used to achieve Purcell enhancement of two closely spaced defect zero-phonon lines (ZPL). Enhancements of >80-fold are measured using multiple techn…
Hyperentanglement has attracted much attention for its fascinating applications in quantum communication. However, it is impossible to purify a pair of photon systems in a mixed hyperentangled state with errors in two degrees of freedom using linear optical elements only, far different from all the existing entanglement purification protocols in a degree of freedom (DOF) for quantum systems. Here, we investigate the possibility of purifying a spatial-polarization mixed hyperentangled Bell state with the errors in both the spatial mode and polarization DOFs, resorting to the nonlinear optics of…
Squeezed light has evolved into a powerful tool for quantum technology, ranging from quantum enhanced sensing and quantum state engineering based on partial post-selection techniques. The pulsed generation of squeezed light is of particular interest, as it can provide accurate time stamp and physically defined temporal mode, which are highly preferred in complex communication networks and large-scale information processing. However, the multimode feature of pulsed squeezing in conventional single-pass configuration limits the purity of the output state, negatively impacting its application in …
The interaction of a single quantum emitter with its environment is a central theme in quantum optics. When placed in highly confined optical fields, such as those created in optical cavities or plasmonic structures, the optical properties of the emitter can change drastically. In particular, photonic crystal (PC) cavities show high quality factors combined with an extremely small mode volume. Efficiently coupling a single quantum emitter to a PC cavity is challenging because of the required positioning accuracy. Here, we demonstrate deterministic coupling of single Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) cente…
The recent discovery of color centers with optically addressable spin states in 3C silicon carbide (SiC) similar to the negatively charged nitrogen vacancy center in diamond has the potential to enable the integration of defect qubits into established wafer scale device architectures for quantum information and sensing applications. Here we demonstrate the design, fabrication, and characterization of photonic crystal cavities in 3C SiC films with incorporated ensembles of color centers and quality factor (Q) to mode volume ratios similar to those achieved in diamond. Simulations show that opti…
Cavity-based large-scale quantum information processing (QIP) needs a large number of qubits and placing all of them in a single cavity quickly runs into many fundamental and practical problems such as the increase of cavity decay rate and decrease of qubit-cavity coupling strength. Therefore, future QIP most likely will require quantum networks consisting of a large number of cavities, each hosting and coupled to multiple qubits. In this work, we propose a way to prepare a $W$-class entangled state of spatially-separated multiple qubits in different cavities, which are connected to a coupler …
We propose and analyze a hybrid device by integrating a microscale diamond beam with a single built-in nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center spin to a superconducting coplanar waveguide (CPW) cavity. We find that under an ac electric field the quantized motion of the diamond beam can strongly couple to the single cavity photons via dielectric interaction. Together with the strong spin-motion interaction via a large magnetic field gradient, it provides a hybrid quantum device where the dia- mond resonator can strongly couple both to the single microwave cavity photons and to the single NV center spin. T…
The negatively-charged nitrogen vacancy center (NV) in diamond has generated significant interest as a platform for quantum information processing and sensing in the solid state. For most applications, high quality optical cavities are required to enhance the NV zero-phonon line (ZPL) emission. An outstanding challenge in maximizing the degree of NV-cavity coupling is the deterministic placement of NVs within the cavity. Here, we report photonic crystal nanobeam cavities coupled to NVs incorporated by a delta-doping technique that allows nanometer-scale vertical positioning of the emitters. We…
We report on the fabrication and characterization of a Fabry-Perot microcavity enclosing a thin diamond membrane at cryogenic temperatures. The cavity is designed to enhance resonant emission of single nitrogen-vacancy centers by allowing spectral and spatial tuning while preserving the optical properties observed in bulk diamond. We demonstrate cavity finesse at cryogenic temperatures within the range of F = 4,000-12,000 and find a sub-nanometer cavity stability. Modeling shows that coupling nitrogen-vacancy centers to these cavities could lead to an increase of remote entanglement success ra…
We propose a novel hybrid platform where solid-state spin qubits are coupled to the acoustic modes of a two-dimensional array of optomechanical nano cavities. Previous studies of coupled optomechanical cavities have shown that in the presence of strong optical driving fields, the interplay between the photon-phonon interaction and their respective inter-cavity hopping allows the generation of topological phases of sound and light. In particular, the mechanical modes can enter a Chern insulator phase where the time-reversal symmetry is broken. In this context, we exploit the robust acoustic edg…

Specifically, we design cavities for achieving strong coupling of electromagnetic modes with an ensemble of nitrogen vacancy (NV) defects in diamond. We report here a novel and practical cavity design with a magnetic filling factor of up to 4 times (2 times higher collective coupling) than previously achieved using 1D superconducting cavities with small…
Quantum acoustodynamics (QAD) is a rapidly developing field of research, offering possibilities to realize and study macroscopic quantum-mechanical systems in a new range of frequencies, and implement transducers and new types of memories for hybrid quantum devices. Here we propose a novel design for a versatile diamond QAD cavity operating at GHz frequencies, exhibiting effective mode volumes of about $10^{-4}λ^3$. Our phononic crystal waveguide cavity implements a non-resonant analogue of the optical lightning-rod effect to localize the energy of an acoustic mode into a deeply-subwavelength …
Quantum communication places stringent requirements on single-photon sources. Here we report a theoretical study of the cavity Purcell enhancement of two diamond point defects, the nickel-nitrogen (NE8) and silicon-vacancy (SiV) centers, for high-performance, near on-demand single-photon generation. By coupling the centers strongly to high-finesse optical photonic-bandgap cavities with modest quality factor Q = O(10^4) and small mode volume V = O(λ^3), these system can deliver picosecond single-photon pulses at their zero-phonon lines with probabilities of 0.954 (NE8) and 0.812 (SiV) under a r…

Emitters of indistinguishable single photons are crucial for the growing field of quantum technologies. To realize scalability and increase the complexity of quantum optics technologies, multiple independent yet identical single photon emitters are also required. However typical solid-state single photon sources are inherently dissimilar, necessitating the use of electrical feedback or optical cavities to improve spectral overlap between distinct emitters. Here, we demonstrate bright silicon-vacancy (SiV-) centres in low-strain bulk diamond which intrinsically show spectral overlap of up to 91…
Direct optical excitation of a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in nanodiamond by light via a nanofiber is of interest for all-fiber-integrated quantum applications. However, the background light induced by the excitation light via the nanofiber is problematic as it has the same optical wavelength as the emission light from the NV center. In this letter, we propose using a nanofiber Bragg cavity to address this problem. We numerically simulate and estimate the electric field of a nanodiamond induced by excitation light applied from an objective lens on a confocal microscope system, a nanofiber, an…
We propose an efficient scheme for simulating the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center ensembles in diamond magnetically coupled to superconducting coplanar waveguide cavities. With the assistance of external microwave driving fields, we show that the interaction of the NV spins can be easily controlled, and several types of the LMG model can be realized by tuning the different parameters. Under the thermal dynamical limit, the distinct non-equilibrium second order quantum phase transition of the spin ensemble can be achieved at the critical point. Furthermore, we…
In many quantum architectures the solid-state qubits, such as quantum dots or color centers, are interfaced via emitted photons. However, the frequency of photons emitted by solid-state systems exhibits slow uncontrollable fluctuations over time (spectral diffusion), creating a serious problem for implementation of the photon-mediated protocols. Here we show that a sequence of optical pulses applied to the solid-state emitter can stabilize the emission line at the desired frequency. We demonstrate efficiency, robustness, and feasibility of the method analytically and numerically. Taking nitrog…

Hybrid quantum systems based on spin ensembles coupled to superconducting microwave cavities are promising candidates for robust experiments in cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) and for future technologies employing quantum mechanical effects. Currently the main source of decoherence in these systems is inho- mogeneous spin broadening, which limits their performance for the coherent transfer and storage of quantum information. Here we study the dynamics of a superconducting cavity strongly coupled to an ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. We experimentally observe for the first…
