We propose a novel hybrid platform where solid-state spin qubits are coupled to the acoustic modes of a two-dimensional array of optomechanical nano cavities. Previous studies of coupled optomechanical cavities have shown that in the presence of strong optical driving fields, the interplay between the photon-phonon interaction and their respective inter-cavity hopping allows the generation of topological phases of sound and light. In particular, the mechanical modes can enter a Chern insulator phase where the time-reversal symmetry is broken. In this context, we exploit the robust acoustic edge states as a chiral phononic waveguide and describe a state transfer protocol between spin qubits located in distant cavities. We analyze the performance of this protocol as a function of the relevant system parameters and show that a high-fidelity and purely unidirectional quantum state transfer can be implemented under experimentally realistic conditions. As a specific example, we discuss the implementation of such topological quantum networks in diamond based optomechanical crystals where point defects such as silicon-vacancy centers couple to the chiral acoustic channel via strain.
We propose a scheme that can generate tunable optomechanically induced transparency in a hybrid piezooptomechanical cavity system. The system is composed of a high-quality planar distributed Bragg reflector cavity modified with an embedded Gaussian-shaped defect. Moreover, interdigitated transducers are fabricated on the surface of the cavity to generate surface acoustic waves. Under the actuation of the surface acoustic wave, the upper Bragg mirrors can be vibrated as a bulk acoustic resonator, and the distributed Bragg reflector cavity becomes a standard three-level optomechanical system. In…
We explore the effect of all-optical feedback on the steady state dynamics of optomechanical arrays arising from various topologies. First we consider an array comprised of a pair of independent optomechanical cavities coupled reversibly via their optical modes. Next we consider an optomechanical network formed from coupling two optical modes with interactions mediated via a common mechanical mode. Finally we extend the analysis to a large network of N-coupled optomechanical systems. Our results show implementing an-all optical feedback loop in each arrangement can enhance the degree of steady…
We propose a novel scheme to simulate Z_2 topological insulators via one-dimensional (1D) cavity optomechanical cells array. The direct mapping between 1D cavity optomechanical cells array and 2D quantum spin Hall (QSH) system can be achieved by using diagonalization and dimensional reduction methods. We show that the topological features of the present model can be captured using a 1D generalized Harper equation with an additional SU(2) guage structure. Interestingly, spin pumping of effective photon-phonon bosons can be naturally derived after scanning the additional periodic parameter, whic…
We consider a quantum optomechanical scheme wherein an ordered two-dimensional array of laser-trapped atoms is used as a movable membrane. The extremely light mass of the atoms yields very strong optomechanical coupling, while their spatial order largely eliminates scattering losses. We show that this combination opens the way for quantum optomechanical nonlinearities, well within the ultimate single-photon strong-coupling regime. As an example, we analyze the possibility to observe optomechanically induced quantum effects such as photon blockade and time-delayed non-classical correlations. We…
We present the design of an optomechanical crystal nanobeam cavity that combines finite-element simulation with numerical optimization, and considers the optomechanical coupling arising from both moving dielectric boundaries and the photo-elastic effect. Applying this methodology results in a nanobeam with an experimentally realized intrinsic optical Q-factor of 1.2x10^6, a mechanical frequency of 5.1GHz, a mechanical Q-factor of 6.8x10^5 (at T=10K), and a zero-point-motion optomechanical coupling rate of g=1.1MHz.
We propose a scheme to achieve the quantum state transfer via the topological protected edge channel based on a one dimensional frequency-modulated optomechanical array. We find that the optomechanical array can be mapped into a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model after eliminating the counter rotating wave terms via frequency modulations. By dint of the edge channel of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, we show that the quantum state transfer between the photonic left edge state and the photonic right edge state can be achieved with a high fidelity. Specially, our scheme can also achieve another phononic…
Nanomechanical systems are generally embedded in a macroscopic environment where the sources of thermal noise are difficult to pinpoint. We engineer a silicon nitride membrane optomechanical resonator such that its thermal noise is acoustically driven by a spatially well-defined remote macroscopic bath. This bath acts as an acoustic blackbody emitting and absorbing acoustic radiation through the silicon substrate. Our optomechanical system acts as a sensitive detector for the blackbody temperature and for photoacoustic imaging. We demonstrate that the nanomechanical mode temperature is governe…
The field of optomechanics provides us with several examples of quantum photon-phonon interface. In this paper, we theoretically investigate the generation and manipulation of quantum correlations in a microfabricated optomechanical array. We consider a system consisting of localized photonic and phononic modes interacting locally via radiation pressure at each lattice site with the possibility of hopping of photons and phonons between neighboring sites. We show that such an interaction can correlate various modes of a driven coupled optomechanical array with well-chosen system parameters. Mor…
We present exact solutions for the quantum time evolution of two spatially separated, local inductor-capacitor (LC) oscillators that are coupled optomechanically to a long elastic strip that functions as a quantum thermal acoustic field environment. We show that the optomechanical coupling to the acoustic environment gives rise to causal entanglement dynamics between the two LC oscillators in the absence of resonant photon exchange between them, and that significant entanglement develops regardless of the environment temperature. Such a process establishes that distributed entanglement may be …
Optical measurements of a nanoscale silicon optomechanical crystal cavity with a mechanical resonance frequency of 3.6GHz are performed at sub-kelvin temperatures. We infer optical-absorption-induced heating and damping of the mechanical resonator from measurements of phonon occupancy and motional sideband asymmetry. At the lowest probe power and lowest fridge temperature (10mK), the localized mechanical resonance is found to couple at a rate of 400Hz (Q=9x10^6) to a thermal bath of temperature 270mK. These measurements indicate that silicon optomechanical crystals cooled to millikelvin temper…
We investigate the optomechanical photon-phonon coupling of a single light mode propagating through an array of vibrating mechanical elements. As recently shown for the particular case of a periodic array of membranes embedded in a high-finesse optical cavity [A. Xuereb, C. Genes and A. Dantan, Phys. Rev. Lett., \textbf{109}, 223601, (2012)], the intracavity linear optomechanical coupling can be considerably enhanced over the single element value in the so-called \textit{transmissive regime}, where for motionless membranes the whole system is transparent to light. Here, we extend these investi…
We consider an array of three optomechanical cavities coupled either reversibly or irreversibly to each other and calculate the amount of entanglement between the different optical and mechanical modes. We show the composite system exhibits intercavity photon-phonon entanglement.
We propose a platform for robust and tunable nonreciprocal phonon transport based on arrays of optomechanical microtoroids. In our approach, time-reversal symmetry is broken by the interplay of photonic spin-orbit coupling, engineered using a state-of-the-art geometrical approach, and the optomechanical interaction. We demonstrate the topologically protected nature of this system by investigating its robustness to imperfections. This type of system could find application in phonon-based information storage and signal processing devices.
We consider an optomechanical system comprising a single cavity mode and a dense spectrum of acoustic modes and solve for the quantum dynamics of initial cavity mode Fock (i.e., photon number) superposition states and thermal acoustic states. The optomechanical interaction results in dephasing without damping and bears some analogy to gravitational decoherence. For a cavity mode locally coupled to a one-dimensional (1D) elastic string-like environment or two-dimensional (2D) elastic membrane-like environment, we find that the dephasing dynamics depends respectively on the string length and mem…
We theoretically study the unique applications of optomechanics based on traveling-wave microresonators, where the optomechanical coupling of degenerate modes can be enhanced selectively by optically pumping in different directions. We show that the unique features of degenerate optical modes can be applied to the entangled photon generation of clockwise and counter-clockwise optical modes, and the nonclassicality of entangled photon pair is discussed. The coherent coupling between the clockwise and counter-clockwise optical mods and two acoustic modes is also studied, in which the relative ph…
We report on the optical and mechanical characterization of arrays of parallel micromechanical membranes. Pairs of high-tensile stress, 100 nm-thick silicon nitride membranes are assembled parallel with each other with separations ranging from 8.5 to 200 $μ$m. Their optical properties are accurately determined using a combination of broadband and monochromatic illuminations and the lowest vibrational mode frequencies and mechanical quality factors are determined interferometrically. The results and techniques demonstrated are promising for investigations of collective phenomena in optomechanic…
We investigate periodic optomechanical arrays as reconfigurable platforms for engineering the coupling between multiple mechanical and electromagnetic modes and for exploring many-body phonon dynamics. Exploiting structural resonances in the coupling between light fields and collective motional modes of the array, we show that tunable effective long-range interactions between mechanical modes can be achieved. This paves the way towards the implementation of controlled phononic walks and heat transfer on densely-connected graphs as well as the coherent transfer of excitations between distant el…
Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) coupled to quantum dots (QDs), trapped atoms and ions, and point defects have been proposed as quantum transduction platforms, yet the requisite coupling rates and cavity lifetimes have not been experimentally established. Although the interaction mechanism varies, small acoustic cavities with large zero-point motion are required for high efficiencies. We experimentally establish the feasibility of this platform through electro- and opto-mechanical characterization of tightly focusing, single-mode Gaussian SAW cavities at $\sim$3.6 GHz on GaAs. We explore the perf…
A general theory is presented to describe optomechanical interactions of acoustic phonons, having extremely long lifetimes in superfluid $^4$He, with optical photons in the medium placed in a suitable electromagnetic cavity. The acoustic nonlinearity in the fluid motion is included to consider processes beyond the usual linear process involving absorption or emission of one phonon at a time. We first apply our formulation to the simplest one-phonon process involving the usual resonant anti-Stokes upconversion of an incident optical mode. However, when the allowed optical cavity modes are such …
Stimulated Brillouin interaction between sound and light, known to be the strongest optical nonlinearity common to all amorphous and crystalline dielectrics, has been widely studied in fibers and bulk materials but rarely in optical microresonators. The possibility of experimentally extending this principle to excite mechanical resonances in photonic microsystems, for sensing and frequency reference applications, has remained largely unexplored. The challenge lies in the fact that microresonators inherently have large free spectral range, while the phase matching considerations for the Brillou…
We study the propagation of light in a resonator optical waveguide consisting of evanescently coupled optomechanical crystal array. In the strong driving limit, the Hamiltonian of system can be linearized and diagonalized. In this case we obtain the polaritons, which is formed by the interaction of photons and the collective excitation of mechanical resonators. By analyzing the dispersion relations of polaritons, we find that the band structure can be controlled by changing the related parameters. It has been suggested an engineerable band structure can be used to slow and stop light pulses.
We study the nonlinear driven dissipative quantum dynamics of an array of optomechanical systems. At each site of such an array, a localized mechanical mode interacts with a laser-driven cavity mode via radiation pressure, and both photons and phonons can hop between neighboring sites. The competition between coherent interaction and dissipation gives rise to a rich phase diagram characterizing the optical and mechanical many-body states. For weak intercellular coupling, the mechanical motion at different sites is incoherent due to the influence of quantum noise. When increasing the coupling s…
Synchronization of weakly-coupled non-linear oscillators is a ubiquitous phenomenon that has been observed across the natural sciences. We study the dynamics of optomechanical arrays - networks of mechanically compliant structures that interact with the radiation pressure force - which are driven to self-oscillation. These systems offer a convenient platform to study synchronization phenomena and have potential technological applications. We demonstrate that this system supports the existence of long-lived chimera states, where parts of the array synchronize whilst others do not. Through a com…
Non-equilibrium dynamics induced by rapid changes of external parameters is relevant for a wide range of scenarios across many domains of physics. For waves in spatially periodic systems, quenches will alter the bandstructure and generate new excitations. In the case of topological bandstructures, defect modes at boundaries can be generated or destroyed when quenching through a topological phase transition. Here, we demonstrate that optomechanical arrays are a promising platform for studying such dynamics, as their bandstructure can be tuned temporally by a control laser. We study the creation…
We calculate the optomechanical coupling strength for a multi-membrane in a cavity system. The optimal configuration for an array of $N$ membranes placed near the center of a cavity is identified. This results in a coupling strength much greater than previously proposed multi-membrane configurations. We find that the coupling strength scales exponentially with the number of membranes until saturating due to complete localization of the field within the array. Furthermore we explore two sources of loss, those due to light absorption within the membrane(s) and leakage through the cavity's end-mi…
Quantum state transfer between distant nodes is at the heart of quantum processing and quantum networking. Stimulated by this, we propose a scheme where one can highly achieve quantum state transfer between sites in a cavity quantum optomechanical network. There, each individual cell site is composed of a localized mechanical mode which interacts with a laser-driven cavity mode via radiation pressure, and photons exchange between neighboring sites is allowed. After the diagonalization of the Hamiltonian of each cell, we show that the system can be reduced to an effective Hamiltonian of two dec…
We investigate the optomechanical properties of a periodic array of identical scatterers placed inside an optical cavity and extend the results of [A. Xuereb, C. Genes, and A. Dantan, Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 223601 (2012)]. We show that operating at the points where the array is transmissive results in linear optomechanical coupling strengths between the cavity field and collective motional modes of the array that may be several orders of magnitude larger than is possible with an equivalent reflective ensemble. We describe and interpret these effects in detail and investigate the nature of the s…
We propose an implementation of a generalized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model based on optomechanical arrays. The topological properties of the generalized SSH model depend on the effective optomechanical interactions enhanced by strong driving optical fields. Three phases including one trivial and two distinct topological phases are found in the generalized SSH model. The phase transition can be observed by turning the strengths and phases of the effective optomechanical interactions via adjusting the external driving fields. Moreover, four types of edge states can be created in generalized …
Optomechanical arrays made of structured flexible dielectrics are a promising system for exploring quantum and many-body optomechanical phenomena. We generalize investigations of the optomechanical properties of periodic arrays of one-dimensional scatterers in optical resonators to the case of vibrating membranes whose thickness is not necessarily small with respect to the optical wavelength of interest. The array optical transmission spectrum and its optomechanical coupling with a linear Fabry-Perot cavity field are investigated both analytically and numerically.
Optomechanical arrays are a promising future platform for studies of transport, many-body dynamics, quantum control and topological effects in systems of coupled photon and phonon modes. We introduce disordered optomechanical arrays, focusing on features of Anderson localization of hybrid photon-phonon excitations. It turns out that these represent a unique disordered system, where basic parameters can be easily controlled by varying the frequency and the amplitude of an external laser field. We show that the two-species setting leads to a non-trivial frequency dependence of the localization l…
We consider an array of optically levitated nanospheres in vacuum and investigate nontrivial phonon transports in this system. The levitated nanospheres are coupled by optical binding. Key parameters of this system, such as the interaction range, trapping frequencies and mechanical dissipation, are all highly tunable. By tuning the spacing between neighboring spheres, the mechanical dissipation and the trapping frequency of each sphere, counter-intuitive phenomena such as prethermalization and nonreciprocal phonon transport can be achieved. Our system provides a great platform to investigate n…
We predict a set of unusual quantum acoustic phenomena resulting from sound-matter interactions in a fully tunable solid-state platform, in which an array of solid-state spins in diamond are coupled to quantized acoustic waves in a one-dimensional (1D) optomechanical crystal. We find that, by a spatially varying laser drive that introduces a position-dependent phase in the optomechanical interaction, the mechanical band structure can be tuned in situ, consequently leading to unconventional quantum sound-matter interactions. We show that quasi-chiral sound-matter interactions can occur, with tu…
In the well-known stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) process, spontaneous acoustic phonons in materials are stimulated by laser light and scatter the latter into a Stokes sideband. SBS becomes more pronounced in optical fibers and has been harnessed to amplify optical signals and even achieve lasing. Exploitation of SBS has recently surged on integrated photonics platforms as simultaneous confinement of photons and phonons in waveguides leads to drastically enhanced interaction. Instead of being optically stimulated, coherent phonons can also be electromechanically excited with very high ef…
We investigate the collective optomechanics of an ensemble of scatterers inside a Fabry-Perot resonator and identify an optimized configuration where the ensemble is transmissive, in contrast with the usual reflective optomechanics approach. In this configuration, the optomechanical coupling of a specific collective mechanical mode can be several orders of magnitude larger than the single-element case, and long-range interactions can be generated between the different elements since light permeates throughout the array. This new regime should realistically allow for achieving strong single-pho…
We investigate the transport of phonons between $N$ harmonic oscillators in contact with independent thermal baths and coupled to a common oscillator, and derive an expression for the steady state heat flow between the oscillators in the weak coupling limit. We apply these results to an optomechanical array consisting of a pair of mechanical resonators coupled to a single quantised electromagnetic field mode by radiation pressure as well as to thermal baths with different temperatures. In the weak coupling limit this system is shown to be equivalent to two mutually-coupled harmonic oscillators…
The ability to design, fabricate and control systems that can convert photons with dissimilar frequencies has technological implications in classical as well as quantum communications. Laser heating and thermal-mechanical motion in conventional micro/nanoscale optomechanical systems hamper the use of these systems in quantum information processing networks. In contrast, we propose an unconventional system comprising of a bulk quartz crystal placed within a Fabry-Perot cavity. The pumping laser is in the far-infrared region. We explore the possibility of efficient mode conversion between two op…
One of the major advances needed to realize all-optical information processing of light is the ability to delay or coherently store and retrieve optical information in a rapidly tunable manner. In the classical domain, this optical buffering is expected to be a key ingredient to managing the flow of information over complex optical networks. Such a system also has profound implications for quantum information processing, serving as a long-term memory that can store the full quantum information contained in an optical pulse. Here we suggest a novel approach to light storage involving an optical…
We investigate theoretically the generation of nonlinear dissipative structures in optomechanical (OM) systems containing discrete arrays of mechanical resonators. We consider both hybrid models in which the optical system is a continuous multimode field, as it would happen in an OM cavity containing an array of micro-mirrors, and also fully discrete models in which each mechanical resonator interacts with a single optical mode, making contact with Ludwig & Marquardt [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 073603 (2013)]. Also, we study the connections between both types of models and continuous OM models. Whi…
We study the driven-dissipative dynamics of photons interacting with an array of micromechanical membranes in an optical cavity. Periodic membrane driving and phonon creation result in an effective photon-number conserving non-unitary dynamics, which features a steady state with long-range photonic coherence. If the leakage of photons out of the cavity is counteracted by incoherent driving of the photonic modes, we show that the system undergoes a dynamical phase transition to the state with long-range coherence. A minimal system, composed of two micromechanical membranes in a cavity, is studi…
We use single photon detectors to probe the motional state of a superfluid $^4$He resonator of mass $\sim1$ ng. The arrival times of Stokes and anti-Stokes photons (scattered by the resonator's acoustic mode) are used to measure the resonator's phonon coherences up to the fourth order. By post-selecting on photon detection events, we also measure coherences in the resonator when $\leq3$ phonons have been added or subtracted. These measurements are found to be consistent with predictions that assume the acoustic mode to be in thermal equilibrium with a bath through a Markovian coupling.
We demonstrate optomechanical quantum control of the internal electronic states of a diamond nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in the resolved-sideband regime by coupling the NV to both optical fields and surface acoustic waves via a phonon-assisted optical transition and by taking advantage of the strong excited-state electron-phonon coupling of a NV center. Optomechanically-driven Rabi oscillations as well as quantum interferences between the optomechanical sideband and the direct dipole-optical transitions have been realized. These studies open the door to using resolved-sideband optomechanical …
We report a development of an electro-optomechanical system based on a surface acoustic wave (SAW), where a piezoelectric material with a large optoelastic susceptibility is used for the coupling of both a radio wave and optical light to the SAW. In the optical domain, we exploit a tensorial nature of the optoelastic effect to show a polarization dependence of the photon-SAW interaction. We discuss the construction of two-dimensional SAW focusing circuits for the coupling enhancement and the optical cavity enhanced photon-phonon scattering. We estimate an optomechanical coupling rate $g_0$ of …
In the few-photon regime, we theoretically propose a feasible scheme to realize strong coupling optomechanical cycle in a three-mode optomechanical circulatory system (OMCS) comprising of cross-Kerr (CK) type and linear coupling between the corresponding two bosonic modes, meanwhile, where one of the bosonic modes is strongly coherently driven and the rest are weakly driven. A Langevin equation for strong three-mode OMCS is derived by adjusting the parameters of the appropriate strong coherent laser. We show that this strong coupling of optomechanical originates from the strong coherently driv…
We fabricated an acousto-optic semiconductor hybrid device for strong optomechanical coupling of individual quantum emitters and a surface acoustic wave. Our device comprises a surface acoustic wave chip made from highly piezoelectric LiNbO$_3$ and a GaAs-based semiconductor membrane with an embedded layer of quantum dots. Employing multi-harmonic transducers, we generated sound waves on LiNbO$_3$ over a wide range of radio frequencies. We monitored their coupling to and propagation across the semiconductor membrane both in the electrical and optical domain. We demonstrate enhanced optomechani…
