Squeezed light has evolved into a powerful tool for quantum technology, ranging from quantum enhanced sensing and quantum state engineering based on partial post-selection techniques. The pulsed generation of squeezed light is of particular interest, as it can provide accurate time stamp and physically defined temporal mode, which are highly preferred in complex communication networks and large-scale information processing. However, the multimode feature of pulsed squeezing in conventional single-pass configuration limits the purity of the output state, negatively impacting its application in quantum technology. In this Letter, we propose a new approach to generate pulsed squeezing with high temporal purity. Pulsed squeezing based on parametric down-conversion in photonic cavities is analyzed. We show that the effective mode number of the output squeezed light approaches unity. Such a high-purity squeezed light can be realized with broad parameters and low pump power, providing a robust approach to generate large-scale quantum resource.
We study the emergence of non-Gaussian quantum features in pulsed squeezed light generation with a mesoscopic number (i.e., dozens to hundreds) of pump photons. Due to the strong optical nonlinearities necessarily involved in this regime, squeezing occurs alongside significant pump depletion, compromising the predictions made by conventional semiclassical models for squeezing. Furthermore, nonlinear interactions among multiple frequency modes render the system dynamics exponentially intractable in naïve quantum models, requiring a more sophisticated modeling framework. To this end, we construc…
Hybrid quantum information processing combines the advantages of discrete and continues variable protocols by realizing protocols consisting of photon counting and homodyne measurements. However, the mode structure of pulsed sources and the properties of the detection schemes often require the use optical filters in order to combine both detection methods in a common experiment. This limits the efficiency and the overall achievable squeezing of the experiment. In our work, we use photon subtraction to implement the distillation of pulsed squeezed states originating from a genuinely spatially a…
We report on specific signatures of squeezing for time-modulated light fields. We show that application of periodically-modulated driving fields instead of continuous wave fields drastically improves the degree of quadrature integral squeezing in an optical parametric oscillator. These results particularly allow for applications in time-resolved quantum communication protocols.
We study the process of squeezing of an ensemble of cold atoms in a pulsed optical lattice. The problem is treated both classically and quantum-mechanically under various thermal conditions. We show that a dramatic compression of the atomic density near the minima of the optical potential can be achieved with a proper pulsing of the lattice. Several strategies leading to the enhanced atomic squeezing are suggested, compared and optimized.
Achieving high level of pulsed squeezing, in a platform which offers integration and stability, is a key requirement for continuous-variable quantum information processing. Typically highly squeezed states are achieved with narrow band optical cavities and bulk crystals, limiting scalability. Using single-pass parametric down conversion in an integrated optical device, we demonstrate quadrature squeezing of picosecond pulses in a thin-film lithium niobate strip-loaded waveguide. For on-chip peak powers of less than 0.3 W, we measure up to -0.33$\pm$0.07 dB of squeezing with an inferred on-chip…
We analyze the spectral properties of squeezed light produced by means of pulsed, single-pass degenerate parametric down-conversion. The multimode output of this process can be decomposed into characteristic modes undergoing independent squeezing evolution akin to the Schmidt decomposition of the biphoton spectrum. The main features of this decomposition can be understood using a simple analytical model developed in the perturbative regime. In the strong pumping regime, for which the perturbative approach is not valid, we present a numerical analysis, specializing to the case of one-dimensiona…
We study decoherence induced by stochastic squeezing control errors considering the particular implementation of Hadamard gate on optical and ion trap holonomic quantum computers. We analytically obtain both the purity of the final state and the fidelity for Hadamard gate when the control noise is modeled by Ornstein-Uhlenbeck stochastic process. We demonstrate the purity and the fidelity oscillations depending on the choice of the initial superimposed state. We derive a linear formulae connecting the gate fidelity and the purity of the final state.
Mesoscopic mechanical oscillators can be prepared in quantum states and coherently manipulated using the optomechanical interaction. This has recently been used to prepare squeezed mechanical states. However, the scheme used in these experiments relies on slow, dissipative evolution that destroys the system's memory of its initial state. In this paper we propose a protocol based on a sequence of four pulsed optomechanical interactions. In addition to being coherent, our scheme executes in a time much shorter than a mechanical period. We analyse applications in impulsive force sensing and prese…
We present experimental studies on the generation of pulsed and continuous-wave squeezed vacuum via nonlinear rotation of the polarization ellipse in a $^{87}$Rb vapor. Squeezing is observed for a wide range of input powers and pump detunings on the D1 line, while only excess noise is present on the D2 line. The maximum continuous-wave squeezing observed is -$ 1.4 \pm0.1$ dB (-2.0 dB corrected for losses). We measure -1.1 dB squeezing at the resonance frequency of the $^{85}$Rb $F=3 \to F'$ transition, which may allow the storage of squeezed light generated by $^{87}$Rb in a $^{85}$Rb quantum …
Quantum pulsed second-subharmonic generation in a planar waveguide with a small periodic corrugation at the surface is studied. Back-scattering of the interacting fields on the corrugation enhances the nonlinear interaction giving larger values of squeezing. The problem of back-scattering is treated by perturbation theory, using the Fourier transform for non-dispersion propagation, and by numerical approach in the general case. Optimum spectral modes for squeezed-light generation are found using the Bloch-Messiah reduction. Improvement in squeezing and increase of numbers of generated photons …
We consider pulsed-pump spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) as well as pulsed single- and dual-pump spontaneous four-wave mixing processes in waveguides within a unified Hamiltonian theoretical framework. Working with linear operator equations in $k$-space, our approach allows inclusion of linear losses, self- and cross-phase modulation, and dispersion to any order. We describe state evolution in terms of second-order moments, for which we develop explicit expressions. We use our approach to calculate the joint spectral amplitude of degenerate squeezing using SPDC analytically in the …
We study decoherence induced by stochastic squeezing control errors considering the particular implementation of Hadamard gate on optical and ion trap holonomic quantum computers. We find the fidelity for Hadamard gate and compute the purity of the final state when the control noise is modeled by Ornstein-Uhlenbeck stochastic process. We demonstrate that in contradiction to the case of the systematic control errors the stochastic ones lead to decoherence of the final state. In the small errors limit we derive a simple formulae connecting the gate fidelity and the purity of the final state.
We discuss the concept of characteristic squeezing modes applied to a travelling-wave optical parametric amplifier pumped by an ultrashort pulse. The characteristic modes undergo decoupled single-mode squeezing transformations, and therefore they form a useful basis to describe the evolution of the entire multimode system. This provides an elegant and intuitive picture of quantum statistical properties of parametric fluorescence. We analyse the efficiency of detecting quadrature squeezing, and present results of numerical calculations for a realistic nonlinear medium.
We propose a scheme for measuring the squeezing, purity, and entanglement of Gaussian states of light that does not require homodyne detection. The suggested setup only needs beam splitters and single-photon detectors. Two-mode entanglement can be detected from coincidences between photodetectors placed on the two beams.
Photonic Crystal Fibers can be tailored to increase the effective Kerr nonlinearity, while producing smaller amounts of excess noise compared to standard silicon fibers. Using these features of Photonic Crystal Fibers we create polarization squeezed states with increased purity compared to standard fiber squeezing experiments. Explicit we produce squeezed states in counter propagating pulses along the same fiber axis to achieve near identical dispersion properties. This enables the production of polarization squeezing through interference in a polarization type Sagnac interferometer. We observ…
Generation of mechanical squeezing has attracted a lot of interest for its nonclassical properties, applications in quantum information, and high-sensitivity measurement. Here we propose a detuning-switched method that can rapidly generate strong and stationary mechanical squeezing. The pulsed driving can dynamically transpose the optomechanical coupling into a linear optical force and maintain an effective mechanical frequency, which can introduce strong mechanical squeezing in a short time. Moreover, we show the obtained strong mechanical squeezing can be frozen by increasing the pulse inter…
Squeezed states of light constitute an important nonclassical resource in the field of high-precision measurements, e.g. gravitational wave detection, as well as in the field of quantum information, e.g. for teleportation, quantum cryptography, and distribution of entanglement in quantum computation networks. Strong squeezing in combination with high purity, high bandwidth and high spatial mode quality is desirable in order to achieve significantly improved performances contrasting any classical protocols. Here we report on the observation of the strongest squeezing to date of 11.5 dB, togethe…
The immense scalability of continuous-variable cluster states motivates their study as a platform for quantum computing, with fault tolerance possible given sufficient squeezing and appropriately encoded qubits [Menicucci, PRL 112, 120504 (2014)]. Here, we expand the scope of that result by showing that additional anti-squeezing has no effect on the fault-tolerance threshold, removing the purity requirement for experimental continuous-variable cluster-state quantum computing. We emphasize that the appropriate experimental target for fault-tolerant applications is to directly measure 15-17 dB o…
We propose a scheme for the generation of a robust stationary squeezed state of a mechanical resonator in a quadratically coupled optomechanical system, driven by a pulsed laser. The intracavity photon number presents periodic intense peaks suddenly stiffening the effective harmonic potential felt by the mechanical resonator. These "optical spring kicks" tend to squeeze the resonator position, and due to the interplay with fluctuation-dissipation processes one can generate a stationary state with more than 13 dB of squeezing even starting from moderately "pre-cooled" initial thermal states.
We examine the quantum states produced through parametric amplification with internal quantum noise. The internal diffusion arises by coupling both modes of light to a reservoir for the duration of the interaction time. The Wigner function for the diffused two-mode squeezed state is calculated. The nonlocality, separability, and purity of these quantum states of light are discussed. In addition, we conclude by studying the nonlocality of two other continuous variable states: the Werner state and the phase-diffused state for two light modes.
Direct photon detection is experimentally implemented to measure the squeezing and purity of a single-mode squeezed vacuum state without an interferometric homodyne detection. Following a recent theoretical proposal [arXiv quant-ph/0311119], the setup only requires a tunable beamsplitter and a single-photon detector to fully characterize the generated Gaussian states. The experimental implementation of this procedure is discussed and compared with other reference methods.
We propose that a pulsed quantum optomechanical system can be applied for the problem of quantum parameter estimation, which targets to yield higher precision of parameter estimation utilizing quantum resource than that using classical methods. Mainly concentrating on the quantum Fisher information with respect to the mechanical frequency, we find that the corresponding precision of parameter estimation on the mechanical frequency can be enhanced by applying applicable optical resonant pulsed driving on the cavity of the optome- chanical system. Further investigation shows that the mechanical …
Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Volume 51, page 511e studied for coherently driven single photon sources, such as atoms and quantum dots. Maximal squeezing is realized, if the electronic subsystem of the emitter is in a pure quantum state. The purification is achieved by using a cavity as a second decay channel, besides the incoherent coupling to the electromagnetic vacuum. For realistic cavities this yields a purity of the electronic state of more than 99%. Aside from numerical calculations, we also derive approximate analytical results. Based on the approximations, effects are s…
While a propagating state of light can be generated with arbitrary squeezing by pumping a parametric resonator, the intra-resonator state is limited to 3 dB of squeezing. Here, we implement a reservoir engineering method to surpass this limit using superconducting circuits. Two-tone pumping of a three-wave-mixing element implements an effective coupling to a squeezed bath which stabilizes a squeezed state inside the resonator. Using an ancillary superconducting qubit as a probe allows us to perform a direct Wigner tomography of the intra-resonator state. The raw measurement provides a lower bo…
Intensity squeezing, i.e., photon number fluctuations below the shot noise limit, is a fundamental aspect of quantum optics and has wide applications in quantum metrology. It was predicted in 1979 that the intensity squeezing could be observed in resonance fluorescence from a two-level quantum system. Yet, its experimental observation in solid states was hindered by inefficiencies in generating, collecting and detecting resonance fluorescence. Here, we report the intensity squeezing in a single-mode fibre-coupled resonance fluorescence single-photon source based on a quantum dot-micropillar sy…
We address the evolution of cat-like states in general Gaussian noisy channels, by considering superpositions of coherent and squeezed-coherent states coupled to an arbitrarily squeezed bath. The phase space dynamics is solved and decoherence is studied keeping track of the purity of the evolving state. The influence of the choice of the state and channel parameters on purity is discussed and optimal working regimes that minimize the decoherence rate are determined. In particular, we show that squeezing the bath to protect a non squeezed cat state against decoherence is equivalent to orthogona…
We present theoretical and experimental results on the generation and detection of pulsed, relative-intensity squeezed light in a hot Rb87 vapor. The intensity noise correlations between a pulsed probe beam and its conjugate, generated through nearly-degenerate four-wave mixing in a double-lambda system, are studied numerically and measured experimentally via time-resolved balanced detection. We predict and observe about -1 dB of time-resolved relative intensity squeezing with 50 nanosecond pulses at 1 MHz repetition rate. (-1.34 dB corrected for loss).
We present a systematic study of the purity for Gaussian states of single-mode continuous variable systems. We prove the connection of purity to observable quantities for these states, and show that the joint measurement of two conjugate quadratures is necessary and sufficient to determine the purity at any time. The statistical reliability and the range of applicability of the proposed measurement scheme is tested by means of Monte Carlo simulated experiments. We then consider the dynamics of purity in noisy channels. We derive an evolution equation for the purity of general Gaussian states b…
We report a novel Bell state preparation experiment. High-purity Bell states are prepared by using femtosecond pulse pumped \emph{nondegenerate} collinear spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The use of femtosecond pump pulse {\em does not} result in reduction of quantum interference visibility in our scheme in which post-selection of amplitudes and other traditional mechanisms, such as, using thin nonlinear crystals or narrow-band spectral filters are not used. Another distinct feature of this scheme is that the pump, the signal, and the idler wavelengths are all distinguishable, which is …
With the purpose of controlling the steady state of a dielectric nanosphere levitated within an optical cavity, we study its conditional dynamics under simultaneous sideband cooling and additional time-continuous measurement of either the output cavity mode or the nanosphere's position. We find that the average phonon number, purity and quantum squeezing of the steady-states can all be made more non-classical through the addition of time-continuous measurement. We predict that the continuous monitoring of the system, together with Markovian feedback, allows one to stabilize the dynamics for an…
Pulsed optomechanical measurements enable squeezing, non-classical state creation and backaction-free sensing. We demonstrate pulsed measurement of a cryogenic nanomechanical resonator with record precision close to the quantum regime. We use these to prepare thermally squeezed and purified conditional mechanical states, and to perform full state tomography. These demonstrations exploit large photon-phonon coupling in a nanophotonic cavity to reach a single-pulse imprecision of 9 times the mechanical zero-point amplitude $x_\mathrm{zpf}$. We study the effect of other mechanical modes which lim…
We investigate the quantum properties for the codirectional three-mode Kerr nonlinear coupler. We investigate single-, two- and three-mode quadrature squeezing, Wigner function and purity. We prove that this device can provide richer nonclassical effects than those produced by the conventional coupler, i.e. the two-mode Kerr coupler. We show that it can provide squeezing and the quadrature squeezing exhibiting leaf-revival-collapse phenomenon in dependence on the values of the interaction parameters. In contrast to the conventional Kerr coupler two different forms of cat states can be simultan…
We measure the dynamics of a non-classical optical field using two-time second-order correlations in conjunction with pulsed excitation. The technique quantifies single-photon purity and coherence during the excitation-decay cycle of an emitter, illustrated here using a quantum dot. We observe that for certain pump wavelengths, photons detected early in the cycle have reduced single-photon purity and coherence compared to those detected later. A model indicates that the single-photon purity dynamics are due to exciton recapture after initial emission and within the same pulse cycle.
We consider an optomechanical cavity with a movable end-mirror as a quantum mechanical oscillator (MO) containing an interacting cigar-shaped Bose-Eisenstein condensate (BEC). It is assumed that both the MO and the BEC interact with the radiation pressure of the cavity field in the red-detuned and weak coupling regimes while the two-body atomic collisions frequency of the BEC and the mechanical spring coefficient of the MO are coherently modulated. By analyzing the scattering matrix we find that a frequency-dependent squeezing is induced to the three subsystems only due to the coherent modulat…
Polarization Purity and Dispersion Characteristics of Nested Antiresonant Nodeless Hollow-Core Optical Fiber at Near- and Short-wave-IR Wavelengths for Quantum Communications
In this paper, we study some quantum properties of a superposition of displaced squeezed two-mode vacuum and single-photon states, such as the second-order correlation function, the Cauchy-Schwartz inequality, quadrature squeezing, quasiprobability distribution functions and purity. This type of states includes two mechanisms, namely, interference in phase space and entanglement. We show that these states can exhibit sub-Piossonian statistics, squeezing and deviate from the classical Cauchy-Schwartz inequality. Moreover, the amount of entanglement in the system can be increased by increasing t…

We present experimental studies on the generation and detection of pulsed, relative-intensity squeezed light in a warm rubidium vapor. The noise correlations between a pulsed probe beam and its conjugate -generated through nearly-degenerate four-wave mixing in a double-lambda system- are studied via time-resolved balanced detection. We observe -0.96 dB of time-resolved relative intensity squeezing with 50 nanosecond pulses at 1 MHz repetition rate. (-1.34 dB corrected for loss).
Studying mechanical resonators via radiation pressure offers a rich avenue for the exploration of quantum mechanical behavior in a macroscopic regime. However, quantum state preparation and especially quantum state reconstruction of mechanical oscillators remains a significant challenge. Here we propose a scheme to realize quantum state tomography, squeezing and state purification of a mechanical resonator using short optical pulses. The scheme presented allows observation of mechanical quantum features despite preparation from a thermal state and is shown to be experimentally feasible using o…
