We examine the quantum states produced through parametric amplification with internal quantum noise. The internal diffusion arises by coupling both modes of light to a reservoir for the duration of the interaction time. The Wigner function for the diffused two-mode squeezed state is calculated. The nonlocality, separability, and purity of these quantum states of light are discussed. In addition, we conclude by studying the nonlocality of two other continuous variable states: the Werner state and the phase-diffused state for two light modes.
We investigate the separability, nonlocality and squeezing of continuous-variable analogue of the Werner state: a mixture of pure two-mode squeezed vacuum state with local thermal radiations. Utilizing this Werner state, coherent-state teleportation in Braunstein-Kimble setup is discussed.
We analyze effects of squeezing upon superpositions of coherent states (SCSs) and entangled coherent states (ECSs) for Bell-inequality tests. We find that external squeezing can always increase the degrees of Bell violations, if the squeezing direction is properly chosen, for the case of photon parity measurements. On the other hand, when photon on/off measurements are used, the squeezing operation can enhance the degree of Bell violations only for moderate values of amplitudes and squeezing. We point out that a significant improvement is required over currently available squeezed SCSs in orde…
It is shown that the ensemble $\{p (α),|α>|α^*>\}$ where $p (α)$ is a Gaussian distribution of finite variance and $| α>$ is a coherent state can be better discriminated with an entangled measurement than with any local strategy supplemented by classical communication. Although this ensemble consists of products of quasi-classical states, it exhibits some quantum nonlocality. This remarkable effect is demonstrated experimentally by implementing the optimal local strategy together with a joint nonlocal strategy that yields a higher fidelity.
We investigate the time evolution of nonlocality for a two-mode squeezed state in the thermal environment. The initial two-mode pure squeezed state is nonlocal with a stronger nonlocality for a larger degree of squeezing. It is found that the larger the degree of initial squeezing is, the more rapidly the squeezed state loses its nonlocality. We explain this by the rapid destruction of quantum coherence for the strongly squeezed state.
We propose a test of nonlocality for continuous variables using a two-mode squeezed state as the source of nonlocal correlations and a measurement scheme based on conditional homodyne detection. Both the CHSH- and the CH-inequality are constructed from the conditional homodyne data and found to be violated for a squeezing parameter larger than $r\approx0.48$.

To effectively realize a $\cal PT$-symmetric system, one can dilate a $\cal PT$-symmetric Hamiltonian to some global Hermitian one and simulate its evolution in the dilated Hermitian system. However, with only a global Hermitian Hamiltonian, how do we know whether it is a dilation and is useful for simulation? To answer this question, we consider the problem of how to extract the internal nonlocality in the Hermitian dilation. We unveil that the internal nonlocality brings nontrivial correlations between the subsystems. By evaluating the correlations with local measurements in three different …
Quantum decoherence happens when the system interacts with the environment. Quantum correlation behaviours in the two-qubit spin squeezing model are studied under the influence of intrinsic decoherence. Quantitative results were determined, which depend on parameters of the physical system by checking different quantifiers of quantum correlation such as entanglement, local quantum uncertainty, trace distance discord and uncertainty-induced quantum nonlocality. We show that the entanglement suffers from intrinsic decoherence and exhibits sudden death, whereas the other measures are more robust …
We study how conditional photon operations can affect multipartite quantum correlations, specifically nonlocality and entanglement, of the continuous variable GHZ states. We find that the violation of the Mermin-Klyshko inequality revealing the multipartite nonlocality can be made stronger with photon subtraction applied on each mode of the original GHZ states, particularly in a weak squeezing regime. Photon addition applied on local modes also turns out to enhance the degree of multipartite nonlocality in a broad range of parameters. We further investigate the effects of the photon operations…
Entanglement, the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox and Bell's failure of local-hidden-variable (LHV) theories are three historically famous forms of "quantum nonlocality". We give experimental criteria for these three forms of nonlocality in multi-particle systems, with the aim of better understanding the transition from microscopic to macroscopic nonlocality. We examine the nonlocality of N separated spin J systems. First, we obtain multipartite Bell inequalities that address the correlation between spin values measured at each site, and then we review spin squeezing inequalities that ad…
According to von Neumann, the global Hamiltonian of whole universe must be Hermitian in order to keep the eigenvalues real and to construct a self-consistent quantum theory. In addition to the open system approach by introducing environmental degrees of freedom to a small system, a global Hermitian Hamiltonian can also be generated through the dilation from a small Hilbert space. For example, a local non-Hermitian $\cal PT$-symmetric system can be simulated with a global Hermitian one by the Naimark dilation. When shared by Alice and Bob, the internal nonlocality in such dilated Hermitian syst…
This dissertation studies spin squeezing, entanglement and decoherence in large ensembles of cold, trapped alkali atoms with hyperfine spin f interacting with optical fields. Restricting the state of each atom to a qutrit embedded in the 2f+1 dimensional hyperfine spin enables us to efficiently model the coherent and dissipative dynamics of the ensemble. This formalism also allows us to explore the effects of local control on the internal hyperfine spins of the atoms. State preparation using such control increases the entangling power of the atom-light interface for f>1/2. Subsequent control o…
We investigate theoretically the quantum fluctuations of the fundamental field in the output of a nondegenerate second harmonic generation process occuring inside a laser cavity. Due to the nondegenerate character of the nonlinear medium, a field orthogonal to the laser field is for some operating conditions indepedent of the fluctuations produced by the laser medium. We show that this fact may lead to perfect squeezing for a certain polarization mode of the fundamental field. The experimental feasibility of the system is also discussed.
We investigate quantum nonlocality of a single-photon entangled state under feasible measurement techniques consisting of on-off and homodyne detections along with unitary operations of displacement and squeezing. We test for a potential violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality, in which each of the bipartite party has a freedom to choose between 2 measurement settings, each measurement yielding a binary outcome. We find that single-photon quantum nonlocality can be detected when two or less of the 4 total measurements are carried out by homodyne detection. The largest vio…
We consider a system of laser-cooled ions in a linear harmonic trap and study the phenomenon of squeezing exchange between their internal and motional degrees of freedom. An interesting relation between the quantum noise reduction (squeezing) and the dynamical evolution is found when the internal and motional subsystems are prepared in properly squeezed (intelligent) states. Specifically, the evolution of the system is fully governed by the relative strengths of spectroscopic and motional squeezing, including the phenomenon of total cancellation of the interaction when the initial squeezing pa…
In this paper, we propose a continuous measurement and feedback scheme to achieve strong Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering and Bell nonlocality of two macroscopic mechanical oscillators in cavity optomechanics. Our system consists of two optomechanical cavities in which two cavity fields are coupled to each other via a nondegenerate parametric downconversion. The two cavity output fields are subject to continuous Bell-like homodyne detection and the detection currents are fed back to drive the cavity fields. It is found that when the feedback is absent, the two mechanical oscillators can …
Since the 1935 proposal by Einstein Podolsky and Rosen the riddle of nonlocality, today demonstrated by innumerable experiments, has been a cause of concern and confusion within the debate over the foundations of quantum mechanics. The present paper tackles the problem by a non relativistic approach based on the Weyl's conformal differential geometry applied to the Hamilton-Jacobi solution of the dynamical problem of two entangled spin 1/2 particles. It is found that the nonlocality rests on the entanglement of the spin internal variables, playing the role of "hidden variables". At the end, th…
Free-space quantum links have clear practical advantages which are unaccessible with fiber-based optical channels --- establishing satellite-mediated quantum links, communications through hardly accessible regions, and communications with moving objects. We consider the effect of the atmospheric turbulence on properties such as quadrature squeezing, entanglement, Bell nonlocality, and nonclassical statistics of photocounts, which are resources for quantum communications. Depending on the characteristics of the given channels, we study the efficiency of different techniques, which enable to pre…
Suppose two quantum circuit chips are located at different places, for which we do not have any prior knowledge, and cannot see the internal structures either. If we want to find out whether they have the same functions or not with certainty, what should we do? In this paper, we show that this realistic problem can be solved completely from the viewpoints of quantum nonlocality. Specifically, we design an elegant protocol that examines underlying quantum nonlocality, where the strongest nonlocality can be observed if and only if two quantum circuits are equivalent to each other. We show that t…
We theoretically analyze the noise transformation of a high power continuouswave light field that is reflected off a critical Kerr non-linear cavity (KNLC). Our investigations are based on a rigorous treatment in the time-domain. Thereby, realistic conditions of a specific experimental environment including optical intra-cavity loss and strong classical driving noise can be modeled for any KNLC. We show that even in the presence of optical loss and driving noise considerable squeezing levels can be achieved. We find that the achievable squeezing levels are not limited by the driving noise but …
In a hybrid atom-optomechanical system, the optical coupling of a mechanical mode of a nanomembrane in an optical cavity with a distant interacting atom gas permits highly non-classical quantum many-body states. We show that the mechanical mode can be squeezed by the back-action of internal excitations of the atoms in the gas. A Bogoliubov approach reveals that these internal excitations form a fluctuating environment of quasi-particle excitations for the mechanical mode with a gaped spectral density. Nanomechanical squeezing arises due to quasi-particle excitations in the interacting atom gas…
The detection of kilohertz-band gravitational waves promises discoveries in astrophysics, exotic matter, and cosmology. To improve the kilohertz quantum noise-limited sensitivity of interferometric gravitational-wave detectors, we investigate nondegenerate internal squeezing: optical parametric oscillation inside the signal-recycling cavity with distinct signal-mode and idler-mode frequencies. We use an analytic Hamiltonian model to show that this stable, all-optical technique is tolerant to decoherence from optical detection loss and that it, with its optimal readout scheme, is feasible for b…
We present a method for the study of quantum fluctuations of dissipative structures forming in nonlinear optical cavities, which we illustrate in the case of a degenerate, type I optical parametric oscillator. The method consists in (i) taking into account explicitly, through a collective variable description, the drift of the dissipative structure caused by the quantum noise, and (ii) expanding the remaining -internal- fluctuations in the biorthonormal basis associated to the linear operator governing the evolution of fluctuations in the linearized Langevin equations. We obtain general expres…
Quantum networks of growing complexity play a key role as resources for quantum computation; the ability to identify the quality of their internal correlations will play a crucial role in addressing the buiding stage of such states. We introduce a novel diagnostic scheme for multipartite networks of entangled particles, aimed at assessing the quality of the gates used for the engineering of their state. Using the information gathered from a set of suitably chosen multiparticle Bell tests, we identify conditions bounding the quality of the entangled bonds among the elements of a register. We de…

A thought experiment considering conservation of energy and momentum for a pair of free bodies together with their internal energy is used to show the existence of states that have localised position while being eigenstates of energy and momentum. These states are applicable to all varieties of physical bodies, including planets and stars in free motion in the universe. The states are compound entanglements of multiple free bodies in which the momenta of the bodies are anticorrelated so that they always sum to zero, while their total kinetic energy is anticorrelated with their internal energie…
We propose a reinterpretation and reformulation of the single-particle Green's function in nonrelativistic quantum many-body theory with an emphasis on normalization. By downfolding a correlation function covering all of Fock space into the observable portion, we derive a nonlocal Dyson equation which depends on an unknown downfolding frequency. The downfolding frequency is determined by solving the inverse problem so that the spectral function of the single-particle propagator is a Dirac-$δ$ function. Upon measurement, the system collapses stochastically onto one of these normalized solutions…

Squeezed states, a special kind of entangled states, are known as a useful resource for quantum metrology. In interferometric sensors they allow to overcome the "classical" projection noise limit stemming from the independent nature of the individual photons or atoms within the interferometer. Motivated by the potential impact on metrology as wells as by fundamental questions in the context of entanglement, a lot of theoretical and experimental effort has been made to study squeezed states. The first squeezed states useful for quantum enhanced metrology have been proposed and generated in quan…
The shot-noise limited peak sensitivity of cavity-enhanced interferometric measurement devices, such as gravitational-wave detectors, can be improved by increasing the cavity finesse, even when comparing fixed intra-cavity light powers. For a fixed light power inside the detector, this comes at the price of a proportional reduction in the detection bandwidth. High sensitivity over a large span of signal frequencies, however, is essential for astronomical observations. It is possible to overcome this standard sensitivity-bandwidth limit using non-classical correlations in the light field. Here,…
We study a production of spin-squeezed states with ultra-cold atomic fermions described by the Fermi-Hubbard model in the Mott insulating phase. We show activation of two twisting mechanisms by a position-dependent laser coupling between internal degrees of freedom of atoms. A single laser coupling simulates the one-axis twisting model with the orientation of the twisting axis determined by the coupling phase. Adding a second laser beam with a properly chosen phase paves the way to simulate the two-axis counter-twisting model, enabling to approach the Heisenberg-limited level of squeezing.
Quantum two-mode squeezing (QTMS) radars and noise radars detect targets by correlating the received signal with an internally stored recording. A covariance matrix can be calculated between the two which, in theory, is a function of a single correlation coefficient. This coefficient can be used to decide whether a target is present or absent. We can estimate the correlation coefficient by minimizing the Frobenius norm between the sample covariance matrix and the theoretically expected form of the matrix. Using simulated data, we show that the estimates follow a Rice distribution whose paramet…

We study a bulk fermionic dipolar molecular gas in the quantum degenerate regime confined in a two-dimensional geometry. We consider two rotational states that encode a spin 1/2 degree of freedom. We derive a long-range interacting XXZ model describing the many-body spin dynamics of the molecules valid in the regime where motional degrees of freedom are frozen. Due to the spatially extended nature of the harmonic oscillator modes, the interactions in the spin model are very long-ranged and the system behaves close to the collective limit, resulting in robust dynamics and generation of entangle…
We investigate how pure-state Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations in the internal degrees of freedom of massive particles are affected by a curved spacetime background described by extended theories of gravity. We consider models for which the corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert action are quadratic in the curvature invariants and we focus on the weak-field limit. We quantify nonlocal quantum correlations by means of the violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality, and show how a curved background suppresses the violation by a leading term due to general relativity and a further co…
Quantum steering is a kind of quantum correlations stronger than entanglement but weaker than Bell-nonlocality. In an optomechanical system pumped by squeezed light and driven in the red sideband, we study-under thermal effects-stationary Gaussian steering and its asymmetry of two mechanical modes. In the resolved sideband regime using experimentally feasible parameters, we show that Gaussian steering can be created by quantum fluctuations transfer from the squeezed light to the two mechanical modes. Moreover, one-way steering can be observed by controlling the squeezing degree or the environm…
We propose to simulate bosonic pair creation using large arrays of long-lived dipoles with multilevel internal structure coupled to an undriven optical cavity. Entanglement between the atoms, generated by the exchange of virtual photons through a common cavity mode, grows exponentially fast and is described by two-mode squeezing of effective bosonic quadratures. The mapping between an effective bosonic model and the natural spin description of the dipoles allows us to realize the analog of optical homodyne measurements via straightforward global rotations and population measurements of the ele…
We study the fundamental bounds on precision measurements of parameters contained in a time-dependent nonlinear optomechanical Hamiltonian, which includes the nonlinear light-matter coupling, a mechanical displacement term, and a single-mode mechanical squeezing term. By using a recently developed method to solve the dynamics of this system, we derive a general expression for the quantum Fisher information and demonstrate its applicability through three concrete examples: estimation of the strength of a nonlinear light-matter coupling, the strength of a time-modulated mechanical displacement, …
Squeezing of collective atomic spins has been shown to improve the sensitivity of atomic clocks and magnetometers to levels significantly below the standard quantum limit. In most cases the requisite atom-atom entanglement has been generated by dispersive interaction with a quantized probe field, or by state dependent collisions in a quantum gas. Such experiments typically use complex multilevel atoms like Rb or Cs, with the relevant interactions designed so atoms behave like pseudo-spin-$1/2$ particles. We demonstrate the viability of spin squeezing for collective spins composed of the physic…
Narrow-band intensity-difference squeezing beams have important applications in quantum metrology and gravitational wave detection. The best way to generate narrow-band intensity-difference squeezing is to employ parametrically-amplified four-wave mixing process in high-gain atomic media. Such IDS can be further enhanced by cascading multiple parametrically-amplified four-wave mixing processes in separate atomic media. The complicated experimental setup, added losses and required high-power pump laser with the increase of number of stages can limit the wide uses of such scheme in practical app…
