We model Pop III star formation in different FUV and X-ray backgrounds, including radiation feedback from protostars. We confirm previous results that a moderate X-ray background increases the number of Pop III systems per unit cosmological volume, but masses and multiplicities of the system are reduced. The stellar mass function also agrees with previous results, and we confirm the outward migration of the stars within the protostellar discs. We find that nearly all Pop III star systems are hierarchical, i.e., binaries of binaries. Typically, two equal-mass stars form near the centre of the protostellar disc and migrate outward. Around these stars, mini-discs fragment forming binaries that also migrate outward. Stars may also form at Lagrange points L4/L5 of the system. Afterward, star formation becomes more stochastic due to the large multiplicity, and zero-metallicity low-mass stars can form when rapidly ejected from the disc. Stars in the disc often have eccentric orbits, leading to a periodic modulation of their accretion rates and luminosities. At the pericenter, due to strong accretion, the star can enter a red-supergiant phase reaching nearly Eddington luminosity in the optical bands ($m_{\rm AB} \sim 34$ for a $100~M_{odot}$ star at $z=6$). During this phase, the star, rather than its nebular lines, can be observed directly by JWST, if sufficiently magnified by a gravitational lens. The $\sim 10,000$ AU separations and high eccentricities of many Pop III star binaries in our simulations are favorable parameters for IMBH mergers - and gravitational waves emission - through orbital excitation by field stars.
Using isophotal radius correlations for a sample of 2MASS ellipticals, we have constructed a series of template surface brightness profiles to describe the profile shapes of ellipticals as a function of luminosity. The templates are a smooth function of luminosity, yet are not adequately matched to any fitting function supporting the view that ellipticals are weakly non-homologous with respect to structure. Through comparison to the templates, it is discovered that ellipticals are divided into two families; those well matched to the templates and a second class of ellipticals with distinctly s…
As tracers of star formation, galaxy assembly and mass distribution, globular clusters have provided important clues to our understanding of early-type galaxies. But their study has been mostly constrained to galaxy groups and clusters where early-type galaxies dominate, leaving the properties of the globular cluster systems (GCSs) of isolated ellipticals as a mostly uncharted territory. We present Gemini-South/GMOS $g'i'$ observations of five isolated elliptical galaxies: NGC 3962, NGC 2865, IC 4889, NGC 2271 and NGC 4240. Photometry of their GCSs reveals clear color bimodality in three of th…
An intense search for kinematic signatures of reverberation mapping of close binary SMBH (SMBBH) is currently ongoing. Elliptical SMBBH systems (i.e. both orbits and disc-like broad-line regions (BLR) are elliptic) have not been assessed in two-dimensional transfer functions (2DTF) studies. We aim to numerically infer such a 2DTF because the geometry of the unresolved region is imprinted on their optical emission. Through this, we determine their specific kinematical signatures. We simulated the geometry and kinematics of SMBBH whose components are on elliptical orbits. Each SMBH had a disc-li…
We systematically investigated the heating of coronal loops on metal-free stars with various stellar masses and magnetic fields by magnetohydrodynamic simulations. It is found that the coronal property is dependent on the coronal magnetic field strength $B_{\rm c}$ because it affects the difference of the nonlinearity of the Alfvénic waves. Weaker $B_{\rm c}$ leads to cooler and less dense coronae because most of the input waves dissipate in the lower atmosphere on account of the larger nonlinearity. Accordingly EUV and X-ray luminosities also correlate with $B_{\rm c}$, while they are emitted…
We present the stellar population analysis of a sample of 12 dwarf elliptical galaxies, observed with the SAURON integral field unit, using the full-spectrum fitting method. We show that star formation histories (SFHs) resolved into two populations can be recovered even within a limited wavelength range, provided that high S/N data is used. We confirm that dEs have had complex SFHs, with star formation extending to (more) recent epochs: for the majority of our galaxies star formation activity was either still strong a few ($\lesssim$ 5) Gyr ago or they experienced a secondary burst of star for…
We study the evolution of $L_{*}$ elliptical galaxies in the color-magnitude diagram in terms of their star-formation history and environment, in an attempt to learn about their quenching process. We have visually extracted 1109 $L_{*}$ galaxies from a sample of 36500 galaxies that were spectroscopically selected from Stripe82 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. From this sample we have selected 51 ellipticals based on their surface-brightness profile being well-fitted by a single S$\acute{e}$rsic profile with S$\acute{e}$rsic indices $3<n<6$. Our sample consists of 12 blue-cloud $L_{*}$ elliptic…
The recently launched James Webb Space Telescope promises unparalleled advances in our understanding of the first stars and galaxies, but realizing this potential requires cosmological simulations that capture the key physical processes that affected these objects. Here we show that radiative transfer and subgrid turbulent mixing are two such processes. By comparing simulations with and without radiative transfer but with exactly the same physical parameters and subgrid turbulent mixing model, we show that tracking radiative transfer suppresses the Population III (Pop III) star formation densi…
We continue to explore the relationship between globular cluster total number, $N_{\rm GC}$, and central black hole mass, $M_\bullet$, in spiral galaxies. We present here results for the Sab galaxies NGC 3368, NGC 4736 (M 94) and NGC 4826 (M 64), and the Sm galaxy NGC 4395. The globular cluster (GC) candidate selection is based on the ($u^*$ - $i^\prime$) versus ($i^\prime$ - $K_s$) color-color diagram, and $i^\prime$-band shape parameters. We determine the $M_\bullet$ versus $N_{\rm GC}$ correlation for these spirals, plus NGC 4258, NGC 253, M 104, M 81, M 31, and the Milky Way. We also redet…
Radiation is an important contributor to the energetics of the interstellar medium, yet its transport is difficult to solve numerically. We present a novel approach towards solving radiative transfer of diffuse sources via backwards ray tracing. Here we focus on the radiative transfer of infrared radiation and the radiation pressure on dust. The new module, \textsc{TreeRay/RadPressure}, is an extension to the novel radiative transfer method \textsc{TreeRay} implemented in the grid-based MHD code {\sc Flash}. In \textsc{TreeRay/RadPressure}, every cell and every star particle is a source of inf…
Ten weeks of daily imaging of the giant elliptical galaxy M87 with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has yielded 41 nova light curves of unprecedented quality for extragalactic cataclysmic variables. We have recently used these light curves to demonstrate that the observational scatter in the so-called Maximum-Magnitude Rate of Decline (MMRD) relation for classical novae is so large as to render the nova-MMRD useless as a standard candle. Here we demonstrate that a modified Buscombe - de Vaucouleurs hypothesis, namely that novae with decline times t2 > 10 days converge to nearly the same absolu…
Supermassive stars (SMSs) with masses of $M_\ast \simeq 10^4$--$10^5~{\rm M_\odot}$ are invoked as possible seeds of high-redshift supermassive black holes, but it remains under debate whether their protostar indeed acquires sufficient mass via gas accretion overcoming radiative feedback. We investigate protostellar growth in dynamically heated atomic-cooling haloes (ACHs) found in recent cosmological simulations, performing three-dimensional radiation hydrodynamical (RHD) simulations that consider stellar evolution under variable mass accretion. We find that one of the ACHs feeds the central …
This paper presents a study of the galactic environment of a chemically-pristine (<0.6% solar metallicity) Lyman Limit system (LLS) discovered along the sightline toward QSO SDSSJ135726.27+043541.4 (zQSO=1.233) at projected distance d=126 physical kpc (pkpc) from a luminous red galaxy (LRG) at z=0.33. Combining deep Hubble Space Telescope images, MUSE integral field spectroscopic data, and wide-field redshift survey data has enabled an unprecedented, ultra-deep view of the environment around this LRG-LLS pair. A total of 12 galaxies, including the LRG, are found at d<~400 pkpc and line-of-sigh…

Radiative feedback from massive Population III (Pop III) stars in the form of ionising and photodissociating photons is widely believed to play a central role in shutting off accretion onto these stars. Understanding whether and how this occurs is vital for predicting the final masses reached by these stars and the form of the Pop III stellar initial mass function. To help us better understand the impact of UV radiation from massive Pop III stars on the gas surrounding them, we carry out high resolution simulations of the formation and early evolution of these stars, using the AREPO moving-mes…
Recent observations have found extended multi-phase gas in a significant fraction of massive elliptical galaxies. We perform high-resolution three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of two idealized elliptical galaxies -- one representing a typical galaxy characterized by initial conditions conducive to the development of thermal instability and the other one less likely to develop thermal instability -- in order to study the development of thermal instability and the formation of multi-phase structures. We analyze the interplay between radiative cooling, momentum-driven AGN feedback, star…
Observations of some starburst-driven galactic superwinds suggest that strong radiative cooling could play a key role in the nature of feedback and the formation of stars and molecular gas in star-forming galaxies. These catastrophically cooling superwinds are not adequately described by adiabatic fluid models, but they can be reproduced by incorporating non-equilibrium radiative cooling functions into the fluid model. In this work, we have employed the atomic and cooling module MAIHEM implemented in the framework of the FLASH hydrodynamics code to simulate the formation of radiatively cooling…
The regular or chaotic character of orbits of stars moving in the meridional plane (R,z) of an axially symmetric elliptical galaxy with a dense, massive spherical nucleus and a dark matter halo component is under investigation. In particular, we explore how the flattening of an elliptical galaxy influences the overall orbital structure of the system, by computing in each case the percentage of chaotic orbits, as well as the percentages of orbits composing the main regular families. In an attempt to discriminate safely and with certainty between regular and chaotic motion, we use the Smaller AL…
Motivated by observations of outflowing galaxies, we investigate the combined impact of magnetic fields and radiative cooling on the evolution of cold clouds embedded in a hot wind. We perform a collection of three-dimensional adaptive mesh refinement, magnetohydrodynamical simulations that span two resolutions, and include fields that are aligned and transverse to the oncoming, super-Alfvénic material. Aligned fields have little impact on the overall lifetime of the clouds over the non-magnetized case, although they do increase the mixing between the wind and cloud material by a factor of $\a…
An Improved [O III] Line Width to Stellar Velocity Dispersion Calibration: Curvature, Scatter, and Lack of Evolution in the Black-Hole Mass Versus Stellar Velocity Dispersion Relationship
As some of the only Lyman continuum (LyC) emitters at z~0, Green Pea (GP) galaxies are possible analogs of the sources that reionized the universe. We present HST COS spectra of 13 of the most highly ionized GPs, with [O III]/[O II]=6-35, and investigate correlations between Ly-alpha, galaxy properties, and low-ionization UV lines. Galaxies with high [O III]/[O II] have higher H-alpha equivalent widths (EWs), and high intrinsic Ly-alpha production may explain the prevalence of high Ly-alpha EWs among GPs. While Ly-alpha escape fraction is closely linked to low gas covering fractions, implying …
In this work, we use the {\sc astraeus} (seminumerical rAdiative tranSfer coupling of galaxy formaTion and Reionization in N-body dArk mattEr simUlationS) framework which couples galaxy formation and reionization in the first billion years. Exploring a number of models for reionization feedback and the escape fraction of ionizing radiation from the galactic environment ($f_\mathrm{esc}$), we quantify how the contribution of star-forming galaxies {(with halo masses $M_h>10^{8.2}$M$_\odot$)} to reionization depends on the radiative feedback model, $f_\mathrm{esc}$, and the environmental over-den…
We model the emission of methyl cyanide (CH3CN) lines towards the massive hot molecular core SgrB2(M). We aim at reconstructing the CH3CN abundance field and investigating the gas temperature distribution as well as the velocity field. SgrB2(M) was observed with the ALMA in a spectral line survey from 211 to 275 GHz. This frequency range includes several transitions of CH3CN (including isotopologues and vibrationally excited states). We employ the three-dimensional radiative transfer toolbox Pandora in order to retrieve the velocity and abundance field by modeling different CH3CN lines. For th…
The decrease in star formation (SF) and the morphological change necessary to produce the $z=0$ elliptical galaxy population are commonly ascribed to a sudden quenching event, which is able to rid the central galaxy of its cold gas reservoir in a short time. Following this event, the galaxy is able to prevent further SF and stay quiescent via a maintenance mode. We test whether such a quenching event is truly necessary using a simple model of quiescence. In this model, hot gas (all gas above a temperature threshold) in a $\sim10^{12} M_{\odot}$ halo mass galaxy at redshift $z\sim3$ is prevente…
We use the ROGER code by de los Rios et al. to classify galaxies around a sample of X-ray clusters into five classes according to their positions in the projected phase space diagram: cluster galaxies, backsplash galaxies, recent infallers, infalling galaxies, and interlopers. To understand the effects of the cluster environment to the evolution of galaxies, we compare across the five classes: stellar mass, specific star formation rate, size, and morphology. Following the guidelines of Coenda et al., a separate analysis is carried out for red and blue galaxies. For red galaxies, cluster galaxi…
Elliptical galaxies moving through the intra-cluster medium (ICM) are progressively stripped of their gaseous atmospheres. X-ray observations reveal the structure of galactic tails, wakes, and the interface between the galactic gas and the ICM. This fine-structure depends on dynamic conditions (galaxy potential, initial gas contents, orbit in the host cluster), orbital stage (early infall, pre-/post-pericenter passage), as well as on the still ill-constrained ICM plasma properties (thermal conductivity, viscosity, magnetic field structure). Paper I describes flow patterns and stages of invisci…
The cosmic history of supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth is important for understanding galaxy evolution, reionization and the physics of accretion. Recent NuSTAR, Swift-BAT and \textit{Chandra} hard X-ray surveys have provided new constraints on the space density of heavily obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Using the new X-ray luminosity function derived from these data, we here estimate the accretion efficiency of SMBHs and their contribution to reionization. We calculate the total ionizing radiation from active galactic nuclei (AGN) as a function of redshift, based on the X radiatio…
