This paper presents a study of the galactic environment of a chemically-pristine (<0.6% solar metallicity) Lyman Limit system (LLS) discovered along the sightline toward QSO SDSSJ135726.27+043541.4 (zQSO=1.233) at projected distance d=126 physical kpc (pkpc) from a luminous red galaxy (LRG) at z=0.33. Combining deep Hubble Space Telescope images, MUSE integral field spectroscopic data, and wide-field redshift survey data has enabled an unprecedented, ultra-deep view of the environment around this LRG-LLS pair. A total of 12 galaxies, including the LRG, are found at d<~400 pkpc and line-of-sight velocity dv<600 km/s of the LLS, with intrinsic luminosity ranging from 0.001L* to 2L* and a corresponding stellar mass range of Mstar=10^{7-11} Msun. All 12 galaxies contribute to a total mass of Mstar=1.6e11 Msun with ~80% contained in the LRG. The line-of-sight velocity dispersion of these galaxies is found to be σ_group=230 km/s with the center of mass at d_group=118 pkpc and line-of-sight velocity offset of Δv_group=181 km/s from the LLS. Three of these are located at d<~100 pkpc from the LLS, and they are all faint with intrinsic luminosity <0.02 L* and gas phase metallicity of ~10% solar in their interstellar medium. The disparity in the chemical enrichment level between the LLS and the group members suggests that the LLS originates in infalling intergalactic medium and that parts of the intergalactic gas near old and massive galaxies can still remain chemically pristine through the not too distant past.
The circumgalactic medium (CGM), which harbors > 50% of all the baryons in a galaxy, is both the reservoir of gas for subsequent star formation and the depository of chemically processed gas, energy, and angular momentum from feedback. As such, the CGM obviously plays a critical role in galaxy evolution. We discuss the opportunity to image this component using recombination line emission, beginning with the early results coming from recent statistical detection of this emission to the final goal of realizing spectral-line images of the CGM in individual nearby galaxies. Such work will happen i…
Deep observations have detected extended Ly$α$ emission nebulae surrounding tens of quasars at redshift 2 to 6. However, the metallicity of such extended haloes is still poorly understood. We perform a detailed analysis on a large sample of 80 quasars at $z\sim3$ based on MUSE-VLT data. We find clear evidence of extended emission of the UV nebular lines such as CIV or HeII for about 20$\%$ of the sample, while CIII] is only marginally detected in a few objects. By stacking the cubes we detect emission of CIV, HeII and CIII] out to a radius of about 45 kpc. CIV and HeII show a radial decline mu…

We characterize the metallicities and physical properties of cool, photoionized gas in a sample of 152 z<1 strong Lya forest systems (SLFSs, absorbers with 15<log N(HI)<16.2). The sample is drawn from our COS circumgalactic medium (CGM) compendium (CCC), an ultraviolet survey of HI-selected circumgalactic gas around z<1 galaxies that targets 262 absorbers with 15<log N(HI)<19. We show that the metallicity probability distribution function of the SLFSs at z<1 is unimodal, skewed to low metallicities with a mean and median of [X/H]=-1.47$ and -1.18 dex. Very metal-poor gas with [X/H]<-1.4 repres…
We have obtained new observations of the absorption system at $z_\mathrm{abs}=0.48$ toward QSO Q0454-220, which we use to constrain its chemical and physical conditions. The system features metal-enriched gas and previously unknown low-metallicity gas detected $\sim 200 \, \mathrm{km \, s^{-1}}$ blueward of the metal-enriched gas. The low-metallicity gas is detected in multiple Lyman series lines but is not detected in any metal lines. Our analysis includes low-ionization (e.g., Fe II, Mg II) metal lines, high-ionization (e.g., C IV, O VI, N V) metal lines, and several Lyman series lines. We u…
We present a survey of MgII absorbing gas in the vicinity of 380 random galaxies, using 156 background quasi-stellar objects(QSOs) as absorption-line probes. The sample comprises 211 isolated (73 quiescent and 138 star-forming galaxies) and 43 non-isolated galaxies with sensitive constraints for both MgII absorption and Ha emission. The projected distances span a range from d=9 to 497 kpc, redshifts of the galaxies range from z=0.10 to 0.48, and rest-frame absolute B-band magnitudes range from $M_{\rm B}=-16.7$ to $-22.8$. Our analysis shows that the rest-frame equivalent width of MgII, $W_r$(…
We present multi-sightline absorption spectroscopy of cool gas around three lensing galaxies at z=0.4-0.7. These lenses have half-light radii r_e=2.6-8 kpc and stellar masses of log M*/Ms=10.9-11.4, and therefore resemble nearby passive elliptical galaxies. The lensed QSO sightlines presented here occur at projected distances of d=3-15 kpc (or d~1-2 r_e) from the lensing galaxies, providing for the first time an opportunity to probe both interstellar gas at r~r_e and circumgalactic gas at larger radii r>>re of these distant quiescent galaxies. We observe distinct gas absorption properties amon…
We present the KODIAQ-Z survey aimed to characterize the cool, photoionized gas at 2.2<z<3.6 in 202 HI-selected absorbers with 14.6<log N(HI)<20, i.e., the gaseous interface between galaxies and the intergalactic medium (IGM). We find that the 14.6<log N(HI)<20 gas at 2.2<z<3.6 can be metal-rich gas (-1.6<[X/H]<-0.2) as seen in damped Ly-alpha absorbers (DLAs); it can also be very metal-poor ([X/H]<-2.4) or even pristine gas ([X/H]<-3.8) not observed in DLAs, but commonly observed in the IGM. For 16<log N(HI)<20 absorbers, the frequency of pristine absorbers is about 1%-10%, while for 14.6<log…

We present a new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) absorption-line survey to study halo gas around 16 luminous red galaxies (LRGs) at z=0.21-0.55. The LRGs are selected uniformly with stellar mass Mstar>1e11 Msun and no prior knowledge of the presence/absence of any absorption features. Based on observations of the full Lyman series, we obtain accurate measurements of neutral hydrogen column density N(HI) and find that high-N(HI) gas is common in these massive quiescent halos with a median of <log N(HI)> = 16.6 at projected distances d<~160 kpc. We measure a mean c…
We report the discovery and analysis of only the third Lyman-limit system in which a high-quality resolution, echelle spectrum reveals no metal absorption lines, implying a metallicity $\lesssim$1/10000 solar. Our HIRES spectrum of the background quasar, PSS1723$+$2243, provides a neutral hydrogen column density range for LLS1723 of $N_\textrm{HI}=10^{\text{17.9--18.3}}$ cm$^{-2}$ at redshift $z_\textrm{abs}\approx4.391$. The lower bound on this range, and the lack of detectable absorption from the strongest low-ionisation metal lines, are combined in photoionisation models to infer a robust, …
We report on the search for galaxies in the proximity of two very metal-poor gas clouds at z~3 towards the quasar Q0956+122. With a 5-hour MUSE integration in a ~500x500 kpc^2 region centred at the quasar position, we achieve a >80% complete spectroscopic survey of continuum-detected galaxies with m<25 mag and Lyα emitters with luminosity L>3e41 erg/s. We do not identify galaxies at the redshift of a z~3.2 Lyman limit system (LLS) with log Z/Zsun = -3.35 +/- 0.05, placing this gas cloud in the intergalactic medium or circumgalactic medium of a galaxy below our sensitivity limits. Conversely, w…
We analyze relative abundances and ionization conditions in a strong absorption system at z=6.84, seen in the spectrum of the z=7.54 background quasar ULAS J134208.10+092838.61. Singly ionized C, Si, Fe, Mg, and Al measurements are consistent with a warm neutral medium that is metal-poor but not chemically pristine. Firm non-detections of C IV and Si IV imply that any warm ionized phase of the IGM or CGM has not yet been enriched past the ultra-metal-poor regime (<0.001Z_{solar}), unlike lower redshift DLAs where these lines are nearly ubiquitous. Relative abundances of the heavy elements 794 …

The orbits of the least chemically enriched stars open a window on the formation of our Galaxy when it was still in its infancy. The common picture is that these low-metallicity stars are distributed as an isotropic, pressure-supported component since these stars were either accreted from the early building blocks of the assembling Milky Way, or were later brought by the accretion of faint dwarf galaxies. Combining the metallicities and radial velocities from the Pristine and LAMOST surveys and Gaia DR2 parallaxes and proper motions for an unprecedented large and unbiased sample of very metal-…
The chemical composition of gas in galaxies can be measured in detail from absorption spectroscopy. By studying gas in galaxies in this way, it is possible to investigate the small and faint galaxies, which are the most numerous in the universe. In particular, the chemical distribution of gas in absorbing systems gives us insight into cycles of gas in and around galaxies. Here we study chemical enrichment within 64 Damped Lyman-alpha Absorption (DLA) systems between $1.7 < z < 4.2$. We use high-resolution spectra from VLT/UVES to infer dust depletion from relative abundances of several metals.…
Gaseous outflows are key phenomena in the evolution of galaxies, as they affect star formation (either positively or negatively), eject gas from the core or disk, and directly cause mixing of pristine and processed material. Active outflows may be detected through searches for broad spectral line emission or high-velocity gas, but it is also possible to determine the presence of past outflows by searching for extended reservoirs of chemically enriched molecular gas in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) around galaxies. In this work, we examine the CO(3-2) emission of a set of seven z~2.0-2.5 AGN …
Several models have predicted that stars could form inside galactic outflows and that this would be a new major mode of galaxy evolution. Observations of galactic outflows have revealed that they host large amounts of dense and clumpy molecular gas, which provide conditions suitable for star formation. We have investigated the properties of the outflows in a large sample of galaxies by exploiting the integral field spectroscopic data of the large MaNGA-SDSS4 galaxy survey. We find that star formation occurs inside at least half of the galactic outflows in our sample. We also show that even if …
We present the results from our COS circumgalactic medium (CGM) compendium (CCC), a survey of the CGM at z<1 using HI-selected absorbers with 15<log N(HI) <19. We focus here on 82 partial Lyman limit systems (pLLSs, 16.2<log N(HI) <17.2) and 29 LLSs (17.2<log N(HI) <19). Using Bayesian techniques and Markov-chain Monte Carlo sampling of a grid of photoionization models, we derive the posterior probability distribution functions (PDFs) for the metallicity of each absorber in CCC. We show that the combined pLLS metallicity PDF at z<1 has two main peaks at [X/H]=-1.7 and -0.4, with a strong dip a…
While dwarf galaxies observed in the field are overwhelmingly star-forming, dwarf galaxies in environments as dense or denser than the Milky Way are overwhelmingly quenched. In this paper, we explore quenching in the lower density environment of the Small-Magellanic-Cloud-mass galaxy NGC 3109 ($\text{M}_* \sim 10^8 \, \text{M}_\odot$), which hosts two known dwarf satellite galaxies (Antlia and Antlia B), both of which are HI deficient compared to similar galaxies in the field and have recently stopped forming stars. Using a new semi-analytic model in concert with the measured star formation hi…
We present the first detailed dissection of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of massive starburst galaxies at z > 2. Our target is a submillimeter galaxy (SMG) at z = 2.674 that has a star formation rate of 1200 $M_\odot$/yr and a molecular gas reservoir of $1.3\times10^{11} M_\odot$. We characterize its CGM with two background QSOs at impact parameters of 93 kpc and 176 kpc. We detect strong HI and metal-line absorption near the redshift of the SMG towards both QSOs, each consisting of three main subsystems spanning over 1500 km/s. The absorbers show remarkable kinematic and metallicity cohere…
Metal-poor nearby galaxies hosting massive stars have a fundamental role to play in our understanding of both high-redshift galaxies and low metallicity stellar populations. But while much attention has been focused on their bright nebular gas emission, the massive stars that power it remain challenging to constrain. Here we present exceptionally deep Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet spectra targeting six galaxies that power strong nebular C IV emission approaching that encountered at $z>6$. We find that the strength and spectral profile of the nebular C IV in these new spectra follow a sequ…
Using VIMOS-IFU observations, we study the interstellar medium (ISM) of two star-forming dwarf galaxies, UM 461 and Mrk 600. Our aim was to search for the existence of metallicity inhomogeneities that might arise from infall of nearly pristine gas feeding ongoing localized star-formation. The IFU data allowed us to study the impact of external gas accretion on the chemical evolution as well as the ionised gas kinematics and morphologies of these galaxies. Both systems show signs of morphological distortions, including cometary-like morphologies. We analysed the spatial variation of 12 + log(O/…
