This letter presents a framework for synthesizing a robust full-state feedback controller for systems with unknown nonlinearities. Our approach characterizes input-output behavior of the nonlinearities in terms of local norm bounds using available sampled data corresponding to a known region about an equilibrium point. A challenge in this approach is that if the nonlinearities have explicit dependence on the control inputs, an a priori selection of the control input sampling region is required to determine the local norm bounds. This leads to a "chicken and egg" problem, where the local norm bounds are required for controller synthesis, but the region of control inputs needed to be characterized cannot be known prior to synthesis of the controller. To tackle this issue, we constrain the closed-loop control inputs within the sampling region while synthesizing the controller. As the resulting synthesis problem is non-convex, three semi-definite programs (SDPs) are obtained through convex relaxations of the main problem, and an iterative algorithm is constructed using these SDPs for control synthesis. Two numerical examples are included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
In this note, we present an effective solution to the stabilization of linear input delay systems subject to dissipative constraints while all the effect of input delay is compensated by a controller with novel structure. The method is inspired by the recent development in the mathematical treatment of distributed delays and predictor controllers, which are critical for the derivation of the solution. An important conceptual innovation is the use of a parameterized dynamical state feedback controller (DSFC), where the dimension of the controller equals the dimension of the control input. A suf…

In a recent paper we have shown how to learn controllers for unknown linear systems using finite-sized noisy data by solving linear matrix inequalities. In this note we extend this approach to deal with unknown nonlinear polynomial systems by formulating stability certificates in the form of data-dependent sum of squares programs, whose solution directly provides a stabilizing controller and a Lyapunov function. We then derive variations of this result that lead to more advantageous controller designs. The results also reveal connections to the problem of designing a controller starting from a…
In this paper, we present a Lyapunov-based homogeneous controller for the stabilization of a perturbed chain of integrators of arbitrary order $r\geq 1$. The proposed controller is based on homogeneous controller for stabilization of pure integrator chains. The advantages to control the homogeneity degree of the controller are also discussed. A bounded-controller with minimum amplitude of discontinuous control and a controller with fixed-time convergence are synthesized, using control of homogeneity degree, and their performances are shown in simulations. It is demonstrated that the homogeneou…
A constructive tool of nonlinear control systems design, the method of Control Lyapunov Functions (CLF) has found numerous applications in stabilization problems for continuous time, discrete-time and hybrid systems. In this paper, we address the fundamental question: given a CLF, corresponding to the continuous-time controller with some predefined (e.g. exponential) convergence rate, can the same convergence rate be provided by an event-triggered controller? Under certain assumptions, we give an affirmative answer to this question and show that the corresponding event-based controllers provid…
In systems where the ability to actuate is a scarce resource, e.g., spacecrafts, it is desirable to only apply a given controller in an intermittent manner--with periods where the controller is on and periods where it is off. Motivated by the event-triggered control paradigm, where state-dependent triggers are utilized in a sample-and-hold context, we generalize this concept to include state triggers where the controller is off thereby creating a framework for intermittent control. Our approach utilizes certificates--either Lyapunov or barrier functions--to design intermittent trigger laws tha…
ISIM1s consists of a few MATLAB functions and a script that can be used to derive stabilizing impulsive controllers for delay differential equations. This document serves as both a manual and tutorial on the functionality of the ISIM1s package. Brief background on the theoretically guaranteed stabilization scenario are provided before the primary MATLAB script is explained. The tutorial demonstrates how the package can be used to derive stabilizing impulsive controllers for delay differential equations of various complexity scales. Emphasis is placed on the role of various tuning parameters.
This work studies the stabilization for a periodic parabolic system under perturbations in the system conductivity. A perturbed system does not have any periodic solution in general. However, we will prove that the perturbed system can always be pulled back to a periodic system after imposing a control from a fixed finite dimensional subspace.
In this note we study the generation of attractive oscillations of a class of mechanical systems with underactuation one. The proposed design consists of two terms, i.e., a partial linearizing state feedback, and an immersion and invariance orbital stabilization controller. The first step is adopted to simplify analysis and design, however, bringing an additional difficulty that the model loses its Euler-Lagrange structure after the collocated pre-feedback. To address this, we propose a constructive solution to the orbital stabilization problem via a smooth controller in an analytic form, and …
Emerging advanced control applications, with increased complexity in software but limited computing resources, suggest that real-time controllers should have adaptable designs. These control strategies also should be designed with consideration of the run-time behavior of the system. One of such research attempts is to design the controller along with the task scheduler, known as control-scheduling co-design, for more predictable timing behavior as well as surviving system overloads. Unlike traditional controller designs, which have equal-distance sampling periods, the co-design approach incre…
In this paper, we present Lyapunov-based robust and adaptive controllers for the finite time stabilization of a perturbed chain of integrators with bounded uncertainties. The proposed controllers can be designed for integrator chains of any arbitrary length. The uncertainty bounds are known in the robust control problem whereas they are unknown in the adaptive control problem. Both controllers are developed from a class of finite time stabilization controllers for pure integrator chains. Lyapunov-based design permits to calculate upper bound on convergence time.
In this paper, we present Lyapunov-based adaptive controllers for the practical (or real) stabilization of a perturbed chain of integrators with bounded uncertainties. We refer to such controllers as Adaptive Higher Order Sliding Mode (AHOSM) controllers since they are designed for nonlinear SISO systems with bounded uncertainties such that the uncertainty bounds are unknown. Our main result states that, given any neighborhood N of the origin, we determine a controller insuring, for every uncertainty bounds, that every trajectory of the corresponding closed loop system enters N and eventually …

Output-based controllers are known to be fragile with respect to model uncertainties. The standard $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$-control theory provides a general approach to robust controller design based on the solution of the $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$-Riccati equations. In view of stabilizing incompressible flows in simulations, two major challenges have to be addressed: the high-dimensional nature of the spatially discretized model and the differential-algebraic structure that comes with the incompressibility constraint. This work demonstrates the synthesis of low-dimensional robust controllers with…

We address the problem of model-free distributed stabilization of heterogeneous multi-agent systems using reinforcement learning (RL). Two algorithms are developed. The first algorithm solves a centralized linear quadratic regulator (LQR) problem without knowing any initial stabilizing gain in advance. The second algorithm builds upon the results of the first algorithm, and extends it to distributed stabilization of multi-agent systems with predefined interaction graphs. Rigorous proofs are provided to show that the proposed algorithms achieve guaranteed convergence if specific conditions hold…

This paper develops a dissipativity-based framework for synthesis of stabilizing controllers for discrete-time nonlinear systems subject to state/input constraints. Firstly, we revisit dissipation inequalities for discrete-time nonlinear systems that involve general storage and supply functions. We prove that positive definite storage functions and cyclically negative supply functions yield asymptotic Lyapunov stability. Secondly, we define control dissipation functions (CDFs) and we construct stabilizing receding horizon controllers by minimizing CDFs subject to a cyclically negative supply c…
This work studies data-driven switched controller design for discrete-time switched linear systems. Instead of having access to the full system dynamics, an initialization phase is performed, during which noiseless measurements of the state and the input are collected for each mode. Under certain conditions on these measurements, we develop a stabilizing switched controller for the switched system. To be precise, the controller switches between identifying the active mode of the system and applying a predetermined stabilizing feedback. We prove that if the system switches according to certain …
Given a nonstationary trajectory of the Navier-Stokes system, a finite-dimensional feedback boundary controller stabilizing locally the system to the given trajectory is derived. Moreover the controller is supported in a given open subset of the boundary of the domain containing the fluid. In a first step a controller is derived that stabilizes the linear Oseen-Stokes system "around the given trajectory" to zero; for that a corollary of a suitable truncated boundary observability inequality, the regularizing property for the system, and some standard techniques of the optimal control theory ar…
In this paper, we prove the output feedback stabilization for the linearized Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation posed on a finite domain in the case the full state of the system cannot be measured. We assume that there is a sensor at the left end point of the domain capable of measuring the first and second order boundary traces of the solution. This allows us to design a suitable observer system whose states can be used for constructing boundary feedbacks acting at the right endpoint so that both the observer and the original plant become exponentially stable. Stabilization of the original syst…
This paper studies the design of a finite-dimensional output feedback controller for the stabilization of a reaction-diffusion equation in the presence of a sector nonlinearity in the boundary input. Due to the input nonlinearity, classical approaches relying on the transfer of the control from the boundary into the domain with explicit occurrence of the time-derivative of the control cannot be applied. In this context, we first demonstrate using Lyapunov direct method how a finite-dimensional observer-based controller can be designed, without using the time derivative of the boundary input as…
This paper presents new results that allow one to address the discrete-time general nonlinear robust control problem. The uncertain system is described by a general nonlinear function set characterized by the nominal model and the corresponding modeling error bound. Traditional synthesis methods design parameters of a structured robust controller. The key aim of this paper is to find an unstructured robust controller set in the state-control space, which enlarges the estimate of the closed-loop robust domain of attraction (RDOA). Based on the interval analysis arithmetic, a numerical method to…
This article presents a state feedback control design strategy for the stabilization of a vehicle along a reference collision avoidance maneuver. The stabilization of the vehicle is achieved through a combination of steering, acceleration and braking. A Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) model is obtained from the linearization of a non-linear model along the reference trajectory. A robust state feedback control law is computed for the LPV model. Finally, simulation results illustrate the stabilization of the vehicle along the reference trajectory.
Nonlinear stabilization using control contraction metric (CCM) method usually involves an online optimization problem to compute a minimal geodesic (a shortest path) between pair of states, which is not desirable for real-time applications. This paper introduces a continuous-time dynamic realization which distributes the computational cost of the optimization problem over the time domain. The basic idea is to force the internal state of the dynamic controller to converge to a geodesic using covariant derivative information. A numerical example illustrates the proposed approach.
This paper deals with the stabilization of an anti-stable string equation with Dirichlet actuation where the instability appears because of the uncontrolled boundary condition. Then, infinitely many unstable poles are generated and an infinite dimensional control law is therefore proposed to exponentially stabilize the system. The idea behind the choice of the controller is to extend the domain of the PDE so that the anti-damping term is compensated by a damping at the other boundary condition. Additionally, notice that the system can then be exponentially stabilized with a chosen decay-rate a…
Linearization based controllers for incompressible flows have been proven to work in theory and in simulations. To realize such a controller numerically, the infinite dimensional system has to be linearized and discretized. The unavoidable consistency errors add a small but critical uncertainty to the controller model which will likely make it fail, especially when an observer is involved. Standard robust controller designs can compensate small uncertainties if they can be qualified as a coprime factor perturbation of the plant. We show that for the linearized Navier-Stokes equations, a linear…
In this paper, we provide a systematic approach for the design of stabilizing feedback controllers for nonlinear control systems using the Koopman operator framework. The Koopman operator approach provides a linear representation for a nonlinear dynamical system and a bilinear representation for a nonlinear control system. The problem of feedback stabilization of a nonlinear control system is then transformed to the stabilization of a bilinear control system. We propose a control Lyapunov function (CLF)-based approach for the design of stabilizing feedback controllers for the bilinear system. …
In this paper, we are concerned with the stabilization of linear port-Hamiltonian systems of arbitrary order $N \in \mathbb{N}$ on a bounded $1$-dimensional spatial domain $(a,b)$. In order to achieve stabilization, we couple the system to a dynamic boundary controller, that is, a controller that acts on the system only via the boundary points $a,b$ of the spatial domain. We use a nonlinear controller in order to capture the nonlinear behavior that realistic actuators often exhibit and, moreover, we allow the output of the controller to be corrupted by actuator disturbances before it is fed ba…
We address the problem of attitude stabilization of a rigid body, in which neither the angular velocity nor the instantaneous measurements of the attitude are used in the feedback, only body vector measurements are needed. The design of the controller is based on an angular velocity observer-like system, where a first order linear auxiliary system based directly on vector measurements is introduced. The introduction of gain matrices provides more tuning flexibility and better results compared with existing works. The proposed controller ensures almost global asymptotic stability. The performan…
This paper considers the optimal control and stabilization problems for networked control systems (NCSs) with asymmetric information. In this NCSs model, the remote controller can receive packet-dropout states of the plant, and the available information for the embedded controller are observations of states and packet-dropout states sent from the remote controller. The two controllers operate the plant simultaneously to make the quadratic performance minimized and stabilize the linear plant. For the finite-horizon case, since states of the plant cannot be obtained perfectly, we develop the opt…
Considering the structure of dc Microgrids (MGs) composed of grid-forming/feeding converters, a hierarchical Plug-and-Play (PnP) voltage/current control architecture for MG clusters is proposed. In the primary level, a PnP voltage/current controller is proposed to achieve simultaneous voltage support and current feeding function according to local references. In addition, stabilizing controller is characterized by explicit inequalities which are only related to local parameters of a MG. In the secondary level, for the system with interconnection of MGs, a leader-based voltage/current distribut…
The aim of this work is to design an explicit finite dimensional boundary feedback controller of sampled-data form for locally exponentially stabilizing the equilibrium solutions to semilinear parabolic equations. The feedback controller is expressed in terms of the eigenfunctions corresponding to unstable eigenvalues of the linearized equation. This stabilizing procedure is applicable for any sampling rate, not necessary to be small enough, and it tends to the continuous-times version when the sampling period tends to zero.
This paper mainly investigates the optimal control and stabilization problems for linear discrete-time Markov jump systems. The general case for the finite-horizon optimal controller is considered, where the input weighting matrix in the performance index is just required to be positive semi-definite. The necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the optimal controller in finite-horizon is given explicitly from a set of coupled difference Riccati equations (CDRE). One of the key techniques is to solve the forward and backward stochastic difference equation (FDSDE) which is obtain…
In this paper, we investigate the estimator-based output feedback control problem of multi-delay systems. This work is an extension of recently developed operator-value LMI framework for infinite-dimensional time-delay systems. Based on the optimal convex state feedback controller and generalized Luenberger observer synthesis conditions we already have, the estimator-based output feedback controller is designed to contain the estimates of both the present state and history of the state. An output feedback controller synthesis condition is proposed using SOS method, which is expressed in a set …
This paper will investigate the infinite horizon optimal control and stabilization problems for the Markov jump linear system (MJLS) subject to control input delay. Different from previous works, for the first time, the necessary and sufficient stabilization conditions are explored under explicit expressions, and the optimal controller for infinite horizon is designed with a coupled algebraic Riccati equation. By introducing a new type of Lyapunov equation, we show that under the exact observability assumption, the MJLS with control input delay is stabilizable in the mean square sense with the…
The aim of this work is to design an explicit finite dimensional boundary feedback controller for locally exponentially stabilizing the equilibrium solutions to Fisher's equation in both $L^2(0,1)$ and $H^1(0,1)$. The feedback controller is expressed in terms of the eigenfunctions corresponding to unstable eigenvalues of the linearized equation. This stabilizing procedure is applicable for any level of instability, which extends the result of \cite{02} for nonlinear parabolic equations. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated by a numerical simulation.
