In this paper, we address the rigid body pose stabilization problem using dual quaternion formalism. We propose a hybrid control strategy to design a switching control law with hysteresis in such a way that the global asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed and such that the global attractivity of the stabilization pose does not exhibit chattering, a problem that is present in all discontinuous-based feedback controllers. Using numerical simulations, we illustrate the problems that arise from existing results in the literature -- as unwinding and chattering -- and verify the effectiveness of the proposed controller to solve the robust global pose stability problem.
The existing attitude controllers (without angular velocity measurements) involve explicitly the orientation (\textit{e.g.,} the unit-quaternion) in the feedback. Unfortunately, there does not exist any sensor that directly measures the orientation of a rigid body, and hence, the attitude must be reconstructed using a set of inertial vector measurements as well as the angular velocity (which is assumed to be unavailable in velocity-free control schemes). To overcome this \textit{circular reasoning}-like problem, we propose a velocity-free attitude stabilization control scheme relying solely on…
We address the problem of attitude stabilization of a rigid body, in which neither the angular velocity nor the instantaneous measurements of the attitude are used in the feedback, only body vector measurements are needed. The design of the controller is based on an angular velocity observer-like system, where a first order linear auxiliary system based directly on vector measurements is introduced. The introduction of gain matrices provides more tuning flexibility and better results compared with existing works. The proposed controller ensures almost global asymptotic stability. The performan…
This paper presents the full dynamics and control of arbitrary number of quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) transporting a rigid body. The rigid body is connected to the quadrotors via flexible cables where each flexible cable is modeled as a system of arbitrary number of serially connected links. It is shown that a coordinate-free form of equations of motion can be derived for the complete model without any simplicity assumptions that commonly appear in other literature, according to Lagrangian mechanics on a manifold. A geometric nonlinear controller is presented to transport the rigid…
This paper addresses the problem of stabilizing a part of variables for control systems described by stochastic differential equations of the Ito type. The considered problem is related to the asymptotic stability property of invariant sets and has important applications in mechanics and engineering. Sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability of an invariant set are proposed by using a stochastic version of LaSalle's invariance principle. These conditions are applied for constructing the state feedback controllers in the problem of single-axis stabilization of a rigid body. The cases o…
We propose a tracking control law for the fully actuated rigid body system in the presence of any unknown constant disturbance by employing quaternions with the stable embedding technique and Lyapunov stability theory. The stable embedding technique extends the attitude dynamics from the set of unit quaternions to the set of quaternions, which is a Euclidean space, such that the set of unit quaternions is an invariant set of the extended dynamics. Such a stable extension of the system dynamics to a Euclidean space allows us to employ well studied Lyapunov techniques in Euclidean spaces such as…

This paper proposes a robust dual-quaternion based H-infinity task-space kinematic controller for robot manipulators. To address the manipulator liability to modeling errors, uncertainties, exogenous disturbances, and their influence upon the kinematics of the end-effector pose, we adapt H-infinity techniques\textemdash suitable only for additive noises\textemdash to unit dual quaternions. The noise to error attenuation within the H-infinity framework has the additional advantage of casting aside requirements concerning noise distributions, which are significantly hard to characterize within t…

This paper presents a solution based on dual quaternion algebra to the general problem of pose (i.e., position and orientation) consensus for systems composed of multiple rigid-bodies. The dual quaternion algebra is used to model the agents' poses and also in the distributed control laws, making the proposed technique easily applicable to time-varying formation control of general robotic systems. The proposed pose consensus protocol has guaranteed convergence when the interaction among the agents is represented by directed graphs with directed spanning trees, which is a more general result whe…
This paper studies a rigid body attitude tracking control problem with attitude measurements only, when angular velocity measurements are not available. An angular velocity observer is constructed such that the estimated angular velocity is guaranteed to converge to the true angular velocity asymptotically from almost all initial estimates. As it is developed directly on the special orthogonal group, it completely avoids singularities, complexities, or discontinuities caused by minimal attitude representations or quaternions. Then, the presented observer is integrated with a proportional-deriv…
We present a uniformly globally exponentially stable hybrid angular velocity observer for rigid body systems designed directly on $SO(3)\times\mathbb{R}^3$. The global exponential stability result makes this observer a good candidate for a controller-observer combination with a guaranteed separation property. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid observer as a part of an attitude stabilization scheme.
This paper provides new results for a tracking control of the attitude dynamics of a rigid body. Both of the attitude dynamics and the proposed control system are globally expressed on the special orthogonal group, to avoid complexities and ambiguities associated with other attitude representations such as Euler angles or quaternions. By selecting an attitude error function carefully, we show that the proposed control system guarantees a desirable tracking performance uniformly for nontrivial rotational maneuvers involving a large initial attitude error. In a special case where the desired att…
A mechanical system consisting of a rigid body and attached Kirchhoff plates under the action of three independent controls torques is considered. The equations of motion of such model are derived in the form of a system of coupled nonlinear ordinary and partial differential equations. The operator form of this system is represented as an abstract differential equation in a Hilbert space. A feedback control law is constructed such that the corresponding infinitesimal generator is dissipative.

This paper proposes a fully decentralized and recursive approach to online identification of unknown kinematic and dynamic parameters for cooperative manipulation of a rigid body based on commonly used local measurements. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper addressing the identification problem for 3D rigid body cooperative manipulation, though the approach proposed here applies to the 2D case as well. In this work, we derive truly linear observation models for kinematic and dynamic unknowns whose state-dependent uncertainties can be exactly evaluated. Dynamic consensus in di…
This paper presents a numerical algorithm for computing 6-degree-of-freedom free-final-time powered descent guidance trajectories. The trajectory generation problem is formulated using a unit dual quaternion representation of the rigid body dynamics, and several standard path constraints. Our formulation also includes a special line of sight constraints that is enforced only within a specified band of slant ranges relative to the landing site, a novel feature that is especially relevant to Terrain and Hazard Relative Navigation. We use the newly introduced state-triggered constraints to formul…

This paper deals with the stabilization problem for nonlinear control-affine systems with the use of oscillating feedback controls. We assume that the local controllability around the origin is guaranteed by the rank condition with Lie brackets of length up to 3. This class of systems includes, in particular, mathematical models of rotating rigid bodies. We propose an explicit control design scheme with time-varying trigonometric polynomials whose coefficients depend on the state of the system. The above coefficients are computed in terms of the inversion of the matrix appearing in the control…
In this work, we utilize discrete geometric mechanics to derive a 2nd-order variational integrator so as to simulate rigid body dynamics. The developed integrator is to simulate the motion of a free rigid body and a quad-rotor. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the simulator and its accuracy in long term integration of mechanical systems without energy damping. Furthermore, this work deals with the geometric nonlinear control problem for rigid bodies where backstepping controller is designed for full tracking of position and orientation. The attitude dynamics and control are defined on \text…
This paper applies the recently developed framework for integral control on nonlinear spaces to two non-standard cases. First, we show that the property of perfect target stabilization in presence of actuation bias holds also if this bias is state dependent. This might not be surprising, but for practical purposes it provides an easy way to robustly cancel nonlinear dynamics of the uncontrolled plant. We specifically illustrate this for robust stabilization of a pendulum at arbitrary angle, a problem posed as non-trivial by some colleagues. Second, as previous work has been restricted to syste…
