We study dark energy through the viewpoints of parametric and nonparametric analyses of late-time cosmological data. In this paper we have investigated the limits imposed by thermodynamics on a dark energy fluid. We have obtained the heat capacities and the compressibilities for a dark energy fluid. The thermal and mechanical stabilities require these quantities to be positive. In this work we discuss a general approach for the dark energy thermodynamics considering a varying equation of state (EoS) parameter of the type $ω(a)=ω_0+F(a)$ and taking into account the role of a non-zero chemical potential $μ$. We derive generalized expressions for the entropy density, chemical potential and dark energy temperature $T$ and use the positiveness of the entropy to impose thermodynamic bounds on the EoS parameter $ω(a)$. We describe the thermodynamical interpretation of the interaction between new agegraphic dark energy and dark matter in a non-flat universe. When new agegraphic dark energy and dark matter evolve separately, each of them remains in thermodynamic equilibrium. In the so-called unified dark fluid models, the dark sector gets simplified because dark matter and dark energy are replaced by a single fluid that behaves as the former at early times and as the latter at late times. In this short paper we analyze this class of models from the thermodynamic viewpoint. While the second law of thermodynamics is satisfied, the first two derivatives of the entropies of the apparent horizon and of the energy components suffer such a sharp oscillation that doubts are raised about the soundness of this class of models.

We present a thermodynamical description of the interaction between holographic dark energy and dark matter. If holographic dark energy and dark matter evolve separately, each of them remains in thermodynamic equilibrium. A small interaction between them may be viewed as a stable thermal fluctuation that brings a logarithmic correction to the equilibrium entropy. From this correction we obtain a physical expression for the interaction which is consistent with phenomenological descriptions and passes reasonably well the observational tests.
