It is argued that the discovery of cosmic acceleration could have been anticipated on thermodynamic grounds, namely, the generalized second law and the approach to equilibrium at large scale factor. Therefore, the existence of dark energy -or equivalently, some modified gravity theory- should have been expected. In general, cosmological models that satisfy the above criteria show compatibility with observational data.
Bearing the thermodynamic arguments together with the two definitions of mass in mind, we try to find metrics with spherical symmetry. We consider the adiabatic condition along with the Gong-Wang mass, and evaluate the $g_{rr}$ element which points to a null hypersurface. In addition, we generalize the thermodynamics laws to this hypersurface to find its temperature and thus the corresponding surface gravity which enables us to get a relation for the $g_{tt}$ element. Moreover, we investigate the mathematical and physical properties of the discovered metric in the Einstein relativity framework…
A comparative study of a set of parametric dark energy models is performed by studying the evolution of dark energy both in the past and future epochs. In addition, the age of the universe and time till the distant future $(a=1000)$ are estimated. The validity of generalized second law of thermodynamic in different parametric models is also ascertained.
We investigate the interaction between dark energy and dark matter in the framework of irreversible thermodynamics of open systems with matter creation/annihilation. We consider dark energy and dark matter as an interacting two component (scalar field and "ordinary" dark matter) cosmological fluid in a homogeneous spatially flat and isotropic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) Universe. The thermodynamics of open systems as applied together with the gravitational field equations to the two component cosmological fluid leads to a generalization of the elementary dark energy-dark mater interaction…
We present a conjugate analysis of two different dark energy models investigating both their agreement with recent data and their thermodynamical properties. The successful match with the data allows to both constrain the model parameters and characterize their kinematical properties. As a novel step, we exploit the strong connection between gravity and thermodynamics to further check models viability by investigating their thermodynamical quantities. In particular, we study whether the cosmological scenario fulfills the generalized second law of thermodynamics and, moreover, we contrast the t…
We investigate the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics, in the cosmological scenario where dark energy interacts with both dark matter and radiation. Calculating separately the entropy variation for each fluid component and for the apparent horizon itself, we show that the generalized second law is always and generally valid, independently of the specific interaction form, of the fluids equation-of-state parameters and of the background geometry.
In this paper we have investigated the limits imposed by thermodynamics on a dark energy fluid. We have obtained the heat capacities and the compressibilities for a dark energy fluid. The thermal and mechanical stabilities require these quantities to be positive. We have shown that dark energy fluids must satisfy the stability conditions and that such requirement put difficulties in the cosmic fluid models with negative constant EoS parameters. We have also shown that the observational constraints imposed by SN Ia, BAO and $H(z)$ data on a general dark energy fluid with a time-dependent EoS pa…
In this work we discuss a general approach for the dark energy thermodynamics considering a varying equation of state (EoS) parameter of the type $ω(a)=ω_0+F(a)$ and taking into account the role of a non-zero chemical potential $μ$. We derive generalized expressions for the entropy density, chemical potential and dark energy temperature $T$ and use the positiveness of the entropy to impose thermodynamic bounds on the EoS parameter $ω(a)$. In particular, we find that a phantom-like behavior $ω(a)< -1$ is allowed only when the chemical potential assumes negative values ($μ<0$).
We investigate the thermodynamics of general fluids that have the constriction that their pressure is constant. For example, this happens in the case of pure dust matter, for which the pressure vanishes and also in the case of standard dark matter phenomenology. Assuming a finite non-zero pressure, the corresponding dynamics is richer than one naively would expect. In particular, it can be considered as a unified description of dark energy and dark matter. We first consider the more general thermodynamic properties of this class of fluids finding the important result that for them adiabatic an…
We describe the thermodynamical interpretation of the interaction between new agegraphic dark energy and dark matter in a non-flat universe. When new agegraphic dark energy and dark matter evolve separately, each of them remains in thermodynamic equilibrium. As soon as an interaction between them is taken into account, their thermodynamical interpretation changes by a stable thermal fluctuation. We obtain a relation between the interaction term of the dark components and this thermal fluctuation.
In the present work, we have made an attempt to investigate the dark energy possibility from the thermodynamical point of view. For this purpose, we have studied thermodynamic stability of three popular dark energy models in the framework of an expanding, homogeneous, isotropic and spatially flat FRW Universe filled with dark energy and cold dark matter. The models considered in this work are Chevallier-Polarski-Linder (CPL) model, Generalized Chaplygin Gas (GCG) model and Modified Chaplygin Gas (MCG) model. By considering the cosmic components (dark energy and cold dark matter) as perfect flu…
In this paper, we point out thermodynamical description of ghost dark energy and its generalization to the early universe. Thereinafter, we find expressions for the entropy changes of these dark energy candidates. In addition, considering thermal fluctuations, thermodynamics of the dark energy component interacting with a dark matter sector is addressed. {We will also find the effects of considering the coincidence problem on the mutual interaction between the dark sectors, and thus the equation of state parameter of dark energy.} Finally, we derive a relation between the mutual interaction of…
This paper is devoted to check validity of the laws of thermodynamics for LRS Bianchi type I universe model which is filled with combination of dark matter and dark energy. We take two types of dark energy models, i.e., generalized holographic dark energy and generalized Ricci dark energy. It is proved that the first and generalized second law of thermodynamics are valid on the apparent horizon for both the models. Further, we take fixed radius $L$ of the apparent horizon with original holographic or Ricci dark energy. We conclude that the first and generalized second laws of thermodynamics do…
We propose a model-independent parametrization of dark energy motivated by thermodynamics. To this aim, we consider Padé polynomials to reconstruct the form of deceleration parameter adequate to describe different epochs of cosmic history and divergence-free in the far future. The proposed scenario also fulfills the demand of structure formation and contains the $Λ$CDM model as a limiting case. Thus, a numerical analysis at both background and perturbation levels is performed through the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method in view of the most recent cosmic data. We then use the observational const…
A significant observational effort has been directed to unveil the nature of the so-called dark energy. However, given the large number of theoretical possibilities, it is possible that such a task cannot be performed on the basis only of the observational data. In this article we discuss some thermodynamic properties of this energy component by assuming that its constituents are massless quanta with a general time-dependent equation-of-state parameter $ω(z)=ω_0 + ω_a f(z)$, where $ω_0$ and $ω_a$ are constants and $f(z)$ may assume different forms. We show that very restrictive bounds can be p…
The paper deals with a theoretical model for interacting Tsallis holographic dark energy (THDE) whose infrared (IR) cut-off scale is set by the Hubble length. The interaction $Q$ between the dark sectors (dark energy and pressureless dark matter) of the universe has been assumed to be non-gravitational in nature. The functional form of $Q$ is chosen in such a way that it reproduces well known and most used interactions as special cases. We then study the nature of the THDE density parameter, the equation of state parameter, the deceleration parameter and the jerk parameter for this interacting…
In the so-called unified dark fluid models, the dark sector gets simplified because dark matter and dark energy are replaced by a single fluid that behaves as the former at early times and as the latter at late times. In this short paper we analyze this class of models from the thermodynamic viewpoint. While the second law of thermodynamics is satisfied, the first two derivatives of the entropies of the apparent horizon and of the energy components suffer such a sharp oscillation that doubts are raised about the soundness of this class of models.
In this work we explore the thermodynamic aspects of dark energy for late future time universe in two different scenarios: as a perfect fluid with constant and variable equation of state parameter; and as dissipative fluid described by a barotropic equation of state with bulk viscosity in the framework of the Eckart theory and the full Israel-Stewart theory. We explore cosmological solutions for a flat, homogeneous and isotropic universe; and we assume the late future time behavior when the dark energy dominates the cosmic evolution. When modeled as a perfect fluid with a dynamical equation of…
We derive the dark energy fluid equation of state $P = -ε= {\rm const.}$ as an extremum of entropy, subject to the Hamiltonian constraint of General Relativity. However, we identify perturbations that can render this extremum an entropy minimum designating a thermodynamic instability and specify the mathematical condition for this to occur.
We study the irreversible (non-equilibrium) thermodynamics of FRW universe containing only dark energy. Using the modified entropy-area relation which is motivated from the loop quantum gravity, we calculate the entropy-corrected form of the apparent horizon of FRW universe.
Thermodynamic properties of dark energy are discussed assuming that dark energy is described in terms of a selfinteracting complex scalar. We first show that, under certain assumptions, selfinteracting complex scalar field theories are equivalent to purely kinetic k-essence models. Then we analyze the themal properties of k-essence and in particular we show that dark-energy in the phantom regime does not necessarily yield negative entropy.
We present a thermodynamical description of the interaction between holographic dark energy and dark matter. If holographic dark energy and dark matter evolve separately, each of them remains in thermodynamic equilibrium. A small interaction between them may be viewed as a stable thermal fluctuation that brings a logarithmic correction to the equilibrium entropy. From this correction we obtain a physical expression for the interaction which is consistent with phenomenological descriptions and passes reasonably well the observational tests.
We investigate the validity of the generalized second law in irreversible thermodynamics in a non-flat FRW universe containing the interacting dark energy with cold dark matter. The boundary of the universe is assumed to be enclosed by the dynamical apparent horizon. We show that for the present time, the generalized second law in nonequilibrium thermodynamics is satisfied for the special range of the energy transfer constants.
To explain the accelerating universe driven by dark energy, a so-called "entropy-corrected new agegraphic dark energy" (ECNADE), was recently proposed with the help of quantum corrections to the entropy-area relation in the framework of loop quantum cosmology. Using this definition, we study its thermodynamical features including entropy and energy conservation. We discuss the thermodynamical interpretation of the interaction between ECNADE and dark matter in a non-flat universe bounded by the apparent horizon. We obtain a relation between the interaction term of the dark components and therma…
The thermodynamics of a scheme of dark matter-dark energy interaction is studied considering a holographic model for the dark energy in a flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson- Walker background. We obtain a total entropy rate for a general horizon and we study the Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics for a cosmological interaction as a free function. Additionally, we discuss two horizons related to the Ricci and Ricci-like model and its effect on an interacting system.
We have considered a cosmological model of holographic dark energy interacting with dark matter and another unknown component of dark energy of the universe. We have assumed two interaction terms $Q$ and $Q'$ in order to include the scenario in which the mutual interaction between the two principal components (i.e., holographic dark energy and dark matter) of the universe leads to some loss in other forms of cosmic constituents. Our model is valid for any sign of $Q$ and $Q'$. If $Q<Q'$, then part of the dark energy density decays into dark matter and the rest in the other unknown energy densi…
In this paper, at first, we focus on a FRW universe in which the dark energy candidate satisfies the Polytropic equation of state and study thermodynamics of dark energy. Bearing the thermal fluctuation theorem in mind, we establish a relation between the thermal fluctuation of system and mutual interaction between the dark energy and dark matter. Generalization to a viscous Polytropic gas is also investigated. We point to a condition for decaying dark energy candidate into the dark matter needed for alleviating coincidence problem. The effects of dark energy candidates and their interactions …
Recently, the vacuum energy of the QCD ghost in a time-dependent background is proposed as a kind of dark energy candidate to explain the acceleration of the Universe. In this model, the energy density of the dark energy is proportional to the Hubble parameter $H$, which is the Hawking temperature on the Hubble horizon of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) Universe. In this paper, we generalized this model and choice the Hawking temperature on the so-called trapping horizon, which will coincides with the Hubble temperature in the context of flat FRW Universe dominated by the dark energy comp…
We review the origins, motivations, and implications for cosmology and black holes, of our proposal that "dark energy" is not a quantum vacuum energy, but rather arises from a Weyl scaling invariant nonderivative component of the gravitational action.
Here we are trying to find the conditions for the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) assuming the first law of thermodynamics on the event horizon in both cases when the FRW universe is filled with interacting two fluid system- one in the form of cold dark matter and the other is either holographic dark energy or new age graphic dark energy. Using the recent observational data we have found that GSLT holds both in quintessence era as well as in phantom era for new age graphic model while for holographic dark energy GSLT is valid only in phantom era.
In this work, we have considered a non-canonical scalar field dark energy model in the framework of flat FRW background. It has also been assumed that the dark matter sector interacts with the non-canonical dark energy sector through some interaction term. Using the solutions for this interacting non-canonical scalar field dark energy model, we have investigated the validity of generalized second law (GSL) of thermodynamics in various scenarios using first law and area law of thermodynamics. For this purpose, we have assumed two types of horizons viz apparent horizon and event horizon for the …
We investigate the validity of generalized second law of thermodynamics of a physical system comprising of newly proposed dark energy model called Ricci Gauss-Bonnet and cold dark matter enveloped by apparent horizon and event horizon in flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe. For this purpose, Bekenstein entropy, Renyi, logarithmic and power law entropic corrections are used. It is found that this law exhibits the validity on both apparent and event horizons except for the case of logarithmic entropic correction at apparent horizon. Also, we check the thermodynamical equilibrium condi…
We consider a universe filled by a modified generalized Chaplygin gas together with a pressureless dark matter component. We get a thermodynamical interpretation for the modified generalized Chaplygin gas confined to the apparent horizon of FRW universe, whiles dark sectors do not interact with each other. Thereinafter, by taking into account a mutual interaction between the dark sectors of the cosmos, we find a thermodynamical interpretation for interacting modified generalized Chaplygin gas. Additionally, probable relation between the thermal fluctuations of the system and the assumed mutual…
In this paper, we investigate the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) in the DGP brane world when universe is filled with interacting two fluid system: one in the form of cold dark matter and other is holographic dark energy. The boundary of the universe is assumed to be enclosed by the dynamical apparent horizon or the event horizon. The universe is chosen to be homogeneous and isotropic FRW model and the validity of the first law has been assumed here.

This paper is devoted to check the validity of laws of thermodynamics for Kaluza-Klein universe in the state of thermal equilibrium, composed of dark matter and dark energy. The generalized holographic dark energy and generalized Ricci dark energy models are considered here. It is proved that the first and generalized second law of thermodynamics are valid on the apparent horizon for both of these models. Further, we take a horizon of radius $L$ with modified holographic or Ricci dark energy. We conclude that these models do not obey the first and generalized second law of thermodynamics on th…
In this letter, we investigate the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics of the universe bounded by the event horizon in the holographic dark energy model. The universe is chosen to be homogeneous and isotropic and the validity of the first law has been assumed here. The matter in the universe is taken in the form of non-interacting two fluid system- one component is the holographic dark energy model and the other component is in the form of dust.
This article investigates the relationship between the holographic principle and the laws of thermodynamics in explaining the late-time acceleration of the universe. First, we explore the possibilities of generating the standard holographic dark energy (SHDE) from the laws of horizon thermodynamics. Except for entropies that follow an exponent stretched area law, unless we redefine the horizon temperature, we found it challenging to construct a one-to-one correspondence between the dark energies defined by the holographic principle and the laws of thermodynamics. Secondly, in SHDE models, unle…
Dark energy is the candidate that can produce effective negative pressure and make the galaxies and galaxy clusters move away from each other in an accelerated way. The structures of the Universe have evolved from some initial primordial fluctuations and depend on the background dynamics of different components of the Universe like dark matter, dark energy and others. The motivation of this thesis is to investigate how some of the dark energy models manifest themselves in the formation of the structures in the Universe.
In the present work we investigated the validity of the generalized second law (GSL) of thermo- dynamics in presence of interaction between DBI-essence and other four candidates of dark energy namely modified Chaplygin gas, hessence, tachyonic field and new agegraphic dark energy. It has been observed that the GSL breaks down in presence of the interactions. However, the event horizon remains to be an increasing function of time.
Based on Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter(RN-AdS) black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter, we study the thermodynamics and phase transition by extending the phase space defined by the charge square $Q^{2}$ and the conjugate quantity $ψ$, where $ψ$ is a function of horizon radius. The first law of thermodynamics and the equation of state are derived in the form $Q^{2}=Q^{2}(T,ψ)$. By investigating the critical behaviour of perfect fluid dark matter around Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter black hole, we find that these thermodynamics system are similar to Van der Waals system, and c…
We have considered the flat FRW model of the universe which is filled with only dark energy. The general descriptions of first and second laws of thermodynamics are investigated on the apparent horizon and event horizon of the universe. We have assumed the equation of state of three different types of dark energy models. We have examined the validity of first and second laws of thermodynamics on apparent and event horizons for these dark energies. For these dark energy models, it has been found that on the apparent horizon, first and second laws are always valid. On the event horizon, the laws…

In this paper, we study thermodynamics of the cluster of galaxies under the effect of dynamical dark energy. We evaluate the configurational integral for interacting system of galaxies in an expanding universe by including the effects produced by the varying $Λ$. The gravitational partition function is obtained using this configuration integral. We obtain thermodynamics quantities in canonical ensemble which depend on time and investigate the second law of thermodynamics. We also calculate the distribution function in grand canonical ensemble. The time evolution of the clustering parameter of …
The possibility that dark matter particles could be constituted by extreme regular primordial black holes is discussed. Extreme black holes have zero surface temperature, and are not subjected to the Hawking evaporation process. Assuming that the common horizon radius of these black holes is fixed by the minimum distance that is derived from the Riemann invariant computed from loop quantum gravity, the masses of these non-singular stable black holes are of the order of the Planck mass. However, if they are formed just after inflation, during reheating, their initial masses are about six orders…
We investigate the unified first law and the generalized second law in a modified holographic dark energy model. The thermodynamical analysis on the apparent horizon can work and the corresponding entropy formula is extracted from the systematic algorithm. The entropy correction term depends on the extra-dimension number of the brane as expected, but the interplay between the correction term and the extra dimensions is more complicated. With the unified first law of thermodynamics well-founded, the generalized second law of thermodynamics is discussed and it's found that the second law can be …
We have investigated the thermodynamical properties of dark energy. Assuming that the dark energy temperature $T\sim a^{-n}$ and considering that the volume of the Universe enveloped by the apparent horizon relates to the temperature, we have derived the dark energy entropy. For dark energy with constant equation of state $w>-1$ and the generalized Chaplygin gas, the derived entropy can be positive and satisfy the entropy bound. The total entropy, including those of dark energy, the thermal radiation and the apparent horizon, satisfies the generalized second law of thermodynamics. However, for…
Physical process version of the first law of black hole thermodynamics in Einstein- Maxwell dark matter gravity was derived. The dark matter sector is mimicked by the additional U(1)-gauge field coupled to the ordinary Maxwell one. By considering any cross section of the black hole event horizon to the future of the bifurcation surface, the equilibrium state version of the first law of black hole mechanics was achieved. The considerations were generalized to the case of Einstein- Yang-Mills dark matter gravity theory. The main conclusion is that the influence of dark matter is crucial in the f…
The present work deals with homogeneous and isotropic FLRW model of the Universe having a system of non-interacting diffusive cosmic fluids with barotropic equation of state (constant or variable equation of state parameter). Due to diffusive nature of the cosmic fluids, the divergence of the energy momentum tensor is chosen to be proportional to the diffusive current. The thermodynamic stability analysis of individual fluids is done and the stability conditions are expressed as restrictions on the equation of state parameter.
Particle creation (or annihilation) mechanisms, described by either quantum field theoretical models, or by the thermodynamics of irreversible processes, play an important role in the evolution of the early Universe, like, for example, in the warm inflationary scenario. Following a similar approach, based on the thermodynamics of open systems, in the present work we investigate the consequences of the interaction, decay, and particle generation in a many-component Universe, containing dark energy, dark matter, radiation, and ordinary matter, respectively. In this model, due to the interaction …
Considering an arbitrary, varying equation of the state parameter, the thermodynamic properties of the dark energy fluid in a semiclassical loop quantum cosmology scenario, which we consider the inverse volume modification, is studied. The equation of the state parameters are corrected as a semiclassical one during considering the effective behavior. Assuming that the apparent horizon has Hawking temperature, the modified entropy-area relation is obtained, we find that this relation is different from the one which is obtained by considering the holonomy correction. Considering the dark energy …
