We examine the effects produced by replacing B-B interlayer bonds by C-C bonds in AlMgB14-related boron network on its mechanical properties. The elastic constants, Vickers hardness and shear strength are evaluated by means of first principle computer simulations on the basis of density functional theory. The results of simulations suggest a possibility of existence of several orthorhombic boron carbide phases with strongly enhanced mechanical properties with the Young modulus and Vickers hardness being within the range of 550-600 GPa and 43-50 GPa, respectively
The fabrication, initial structural characterization and diode measurements are reported for the first boron carbide / silicon carbide heterojunction diode. Current-voltage curves obtained for operation at temperatures from 24 C to 388 C. PECVD-deposited undoped boron carbide material is highly crystalline and consists of a variety of polytypes of B-C with crystal sizes as large as 110 nm. Crystal phases are similar to those for PECVD B-C on Si but only partially match known boron and boron-rich B-C phases.
Boron carbide thin films were synthesised by laser-assisted chemical vapour deposition (LCVD), using a CO2 laser beam and boron trichloride and methane as precursors. Boron and carbon contents were measured by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Microstructural analysis was carried out by Raman microspectroscopy and glancing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) was used to study the crystallographic structure and to determine the lattice parameters of the polycrystalline films. The rhombohedral-hexagonal boron carbide crystal lattice constants were plotted as a function of the carbon content, …
We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of boron carbide under stress/deformation. A special rotating anvil press, the rotating tomography Paris Edinburgh cell (RotoPEC), has been used to apply torsional deformation to boron carbide under a pressure of 5~GPa at ambient temperature. Subsequent damages and point defects have been analysed at ambient pressure by energy dispersive X-ray microdiffraction at the synchrotron and by Raman spectroscopy, combined with calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT). We show that apart from the signals due to B$_4$C, new peaks a…
The pressure dependence of melting temperatures for boron carbide and B4C-carbon eutectic has been studied up to 8 GPa, and it was found that in both cases the melting curves exhibit negative slope (-13\pm6 K/GPa), that is indicative of higher density of the melt as compared to the solid phase.
The formation of boron carbide under high pressures and from elemental reactants has been studied and optimum parameters have been determined by varying the (P, T, reactants) conditions. To this end, stoichiometric mixtures of commercial beta rhombohedral boron and amorphous glassy carbon have been subjected to temperatures ranging from 1473 K to 2473 K at pressures of 2 GPa, 5 GPa and 13 GPa. Similar syntheses have been repeated for mixtures of beta boron and graphite, and amorphous boron and amorphous carbon at 2 GPa and 5 GPa. The carbon concentration of boron carbide is shown to be affecte…
Ab initio density-functional theory study suggests that pillared Li-dispersed boron carbide nanotubes is capable of storing hydrogen with a mass density higher than 6.0 weight% and a volumetric density higher than 45 g/L. The boron substitution in carbon nanotube greatly enhances the binding energy of Li atom to the nanotube, and this binding energy (~ 2.7 eV) is greater than the cohesive energy of lithium metal (~1.7 eV), preventing lithium from aggregation (or segregation) at high lithium doping concentration. The adsorption energy of hydrogen on the Li-dispersed boron carbide nanotube is in…
The atomic structure of icosahedral B$_4$C boron carbide is determined by comparing existing infra-red absorption and Raman diffusion measurements with the predictions of accurate {\it ab initio} lattice-dynamical calculations performed for different structural models. This allows us to unambiguously determine the location of the carbon atom within the boron icosahedron, a task presently beyond X-ray and neutron diffraction ability. By examining the inter- and intra-icosahedral contributions to the stiffness we show that, contrary to recent conjectures, intra-icosahedral bonds are harder.
Boron carbide exhibits intrinsic substitutional disorder over a broad composition range. The structure consists of 12-atom icosahedra placed at the vertices of a rhombohedral lattice, together with a 3-atom chain along the 3-fold axis. In the high carbon limit, one or two carbons can replace borons on the icosahedra while the chains are primarily of type C-B-C. We fit an interatomic pair interaction model to density functional theory total energies to investigate the substitutional carbon disorder. Monte Carlo simulations with sampling improved by replica exchange and augmented by 2d multiple …
Boron carbide thin films of different thicknesses deposited by ion beam sputtering were studied. The deposited films were characterized by grazing incidence hard x-ray reflectivity (GIXR), resonant soft x-ray reflectivity (RSXR), x-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS), resonant Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RRBS), and time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). An in-depth profile of the chemical elements constitute the films is reconstructed based on analysis of reflectivity curves measured in the vicinity of B K-edge. The composition of films is closely dependent on…
This paper focuses on the synthesis of rhombohedral B4C (r-B4C) coatings by CO2 laser-assisted chemical vapour deposition (LCVD), using a dynamic reactive atmosphere of BCl3, H2 and CH4 or C2H4. The influence of the carbon precursor on the deposition kinetics is discussed. The use of ethylene as carbon precursor presents several advantages over the use of methane, which is the conventional carbon precursor in CVD processes. These advantages are mainly related to its high absorption coefficient at the laser wavelength and a higher sticking coefficient, which enables to attain higher deposition …
Boron carbide, a lightweight, high temperature material, has various applications as a structural material and as a neutron absorber. The large solubility range of carbon in boron, between $\approx$ 9% and 20%, stems from the thermodynamical stability of three icosahedral phases at low temperature, with respective carbon atomic concentrations: 8.7% (B$_{10.5}$C, named OPO$_1$), 13.0 \% (B$_{6.7}$C, named OPO$_2$), whose theoretical Raman spectra are still unknown, and 20% (B$_4$C), from which the nature of some of the Raman peaks are still debated. We report theoretical and experimental result…
The assessed binary phase diagram of boron-carbon exhibits a single alloy phase designated "B4C" with rhombohedral symmetry occupying a broad composition range that falls just short of the nominal carbon content of 20%. As this composition range is nearly temperature independent, the phase diagram suggests a violation of the third law of thermodynamics, which typically requires compounds to achieve a definite stoichiometry at low temperatures. By means of first principles total energy calculations we predict the existence of two stoichiometric phases at T=0K: one of composition B4C with monocl…
The assessed phase diagram of the boron-carbon system contains a single non-stoichiometric boron-carbide phase of rhombohedral symmetry with a broad, thermodynamically improbable, low temperature composition range. We combine first principles total energy calculations with phenomenological thermodynamic modeling to propose a revised low temperature phase diagram that contains two boron-carbide phases of differing symmetries and compositions. One structure has composition B4C and consists of B11C icosahedra and C-B-C chains, with the placement of carbon on the icosahedron breaking rhombohedral …
Boron Carbide exhibits a broad composition range, implying a degree of intrinsic substitutional disorder. While the observed phase has rhombohedral symmetry (space group R3(bar)m), the enthalpy minimizing structure has lower, monoclinic, symmetry (space group Cm). The crystallographic primitive cell consists of a 12-atom icosahedron placed at the vertex of a rhombohedral lattice, together with a 3-atom chain along the 3-fold axis. In the limit of high carbon content, approaching 20% carbon, the icosahedra are usually of type B11Cp, where the p indicates the carbon resides on a polar site, whil…
Noting the structural relationships between phases of carbon and boron carbide with phases of boron nitride and boron subnitride, we investigate their mutual solubilities using a combination of first principles total energies supplemented with statistical mechanics to address finite temperatures. Owing to large energy costs of substitution, we find the mutual solubilities of the ultra hard materials diamond and cubic boron nitride are negligible, and the same for the quasi-two dimensional materials graphite and hexagonal boron nitride. In contrast, we find a continuous range of solubility conn…
Schwarzites are porous structures that present negative Gaussian curvatures. Although initially proposed for carbon, in principle, schwarzites of other elements are possible. In this work, we have carried out a detailed investigation of the effect of element composition (C, Ge, Si, SiC, and BN) on the structural, electronic and optical properties of a gyroid schwarzite structure, the so-called G688. The DFT simulations were carried out using the well-known SIESTA code. Our results showed that formation energy values are in similar range of other related allotrope structures and are thermally s…
Total energies of crystal structures can be calculated to high precision using quantum-based density functional theory (DFT) methods, but the calculations can be time consuming and scale badly with system size. Cluster expansions of total energy as a linear superposition of pair, triplet and higher interactions can efficiently approximate the total energies but are best suited to simple lattice structures. To model the total energy of boron carbide, with a complex crystal structure, we explore the utility of machine learning methods ($L_1$-penalized regression, neural network, Gaussian process…
We perform both lattice dynamics analysis and molecular dynamics simulations to demonstrate the existence of topologically protected phonon modes in a two-dimensional, monolayer hexagonal boron nitride sheet. The topological phonon modes are found to be localized at an in-plane interface that divides the system into two regions of distinct valley Chern numbers. The dispersion of this topological phonon mode crosses over the frequency gap [1123, 1278] cm^{-1}, which is opened through analogy with the quantum valley Hall effect by breaking inversion symmetry of the boron and nitride atoms in the…
The electrical conductivity of melts of boron and its carbide (B4C), nitride (BN), and phosphide (BP) has been studied at pressures to 7.7 GPa and temperatures to 3500 K. It has been shown that these melts are good conductors with specific electrical conductivity values comparable with that of iron melt at ambient pressure.
Fermi level engineering and mechanical properties evolution in high entropy carbides are investigated by theoretical and experimental means. Massive elemental diversity in high entropy ceramics broadens the compositional space but imposes great challenges in composition selection and property investigation. We have utilized the valence electron concentration (VEC) descriptor to design and predict properties of high entropy carbides. The VEC regulates the Fermi energy and systematically alters the bonding characteristics of materials. As a result, mechanical properties evolve as function of the…
Realizing high-performance nanoelectronics requires control of materials at the nanoscale. Methods to produce high quality epitaxial graphene (EG) nanostructures on silicon carbide are known. The next step is to grow Van der Waals semiconductors on top of EG nanostructures. Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a wide bandgap semiconductor with a honeycomb lattice structure that matches that of graphene, making it ideally suited for graphene-based nanoelectronics. Here, we describe the preparation and characterization of multilayer h-BN grown epitaxially on EG using a migration-enhanced metalorgan…
By using evolutionary algorithm USPEX, we have predicted a number of stable zirconium carbides. In addition to the well-known rocksalt-type stoichiometric ZrC (Fm-3m), present prediction also identifies five stable substoichiometric zirconium carbides adopting rocksalt-type structures with ordered carbon vacancies, Zr8C7 (P-1), Zr6C5 (C2/m), Zr5C4 (P-1), Zr3C2 (C2/m), and Zr2C (Fd-3m). The effects of carbon vacancies on structural and mechanical properties are investigated. We highlight that the distribution of carbon vacancies has significant influence on volume, Pugh's ratio, and hardness. W…
The structures, stability, mechanical and electronic properties of a-boron and its twined brother a*-boron have been studied by first-principles calculations. Both a-boron and a*-boron consist of equivalent icosahedra B12 clusters in different connecting configurations of "3S-6D-3S" and "2S-6D-4S", respectively. The total energy calculations show that a*-boron is less stable than a-boron but more favorable than beta-boron and Gamma-boron at zero pressure. Both a-boron and a*-boron are confirmed dynamically and mechanically stable. The mechanical and electronic properties of a-boron and a*-boro…
By means of first-principles calculations, the structural stability, mechanical properties and electronic structure of the newly synthesized incompressible Re2C, Re2N, Re3N and an analogous compound Re3C have been investigated. Our results agree well with the available experimental and theoretical data. The proposed Re3C is shown to be energetically, mechanically and dynamically stable and also incompressible. Furthermore, it is suggested that the incompressibility of these compounds is originated from the strong covalent bonding character with the hybridization of 5d orbital of Re and the 2p …
The ability to use photonic quasiparticles to control electromagnetic energy far below the diffraction limit is a defining paradigm in nanophotonics. An important recent development in this field is the measurement and manipulation of extremely confined phonon-polariton modes in polar dielectrics such as silicon carbide and hexagonal boron nitride, which pave the way for nanophotonics and extreme light-matter interactions in the mid-IR to THz frequency range. To further advance this promising field, it is of great interest to predict the optical response of recently discovered and yet-to-be-sy…
This paper aimed at extending a model developed by Ladeveze to capture thermal expansion and coupled thermo-mechanical phenomena, as such as those encountered at elevated and extreme temperatures. In the new model a linear thermal expansion coefficient is added to equation of state to account for the thermal to mechanical coupling effects. The mechanical to thermal effects are introduced by assuming an internal heat generation due to residual strain effects. The constitutive relations of the coupled thermo-mechanical behaviors of ceramic matrix composite material model were incorporated into A…
The nickel--carbon system has received increased attention over the past years due to the relevance of nickel as a catalyst for carbon nanotube and graphene growth, where Nickel carbide intermediates may be involved or carbide interface layers form in the end. Nickel--carbon composite thin films comprising Ni$_3$C are especially interesting in mechanical sensing applications. Due to the meta-stability of nickel carbides, formation conditions and the coupling between mechanical and electrical properties are not yet well understood. Using first-principles electronic structure methods, we calcula…
We have systematically studied the mechanical stability of all noble metal carbides with the rock-salt structure by calculating their elastic constants within the density function theory scheme. It was found that only four carbides (RuC, PdC, AgC and PtC) are mechanically stable. In particular, we have shown that RuC, PdC, and PtC have very high bulk modulus, which has been remarkably observed by the most recent experiment for the case of PtC. From the calculated density of states, we can conclude that these compounds are metallic, like the conventional group IV and group V transition metal ca…
Hafnium carbides are studied by a systematic search for possible stable stoichiometric compounds in the Hf-C system at ambient pressure using variable-composition ab initio evolutionary algorithm implemented in the USPEX code. In addition to well-known HfC, we predicted two additional compounds Hf3C2 and Hf6C5. The structure of Hf6C5 with space group C2/m contains 11 atoms in the primitive cell and this prediction revives the earlier proposal by A. I. Gusev. The stable structure of Hf3C2 also has space group C2/m, and is more energetically favorable than the Immm, P-3m1, P2 and C2221 structure…
Microstructure and mechanical properties of bulk polycristalline boron phosphides (cubic BP and rhombohedral B12P2) have been studied by scanning electron microscopy and micro- and nanoindentation. The obtained data on hardness, elastic properties and fracture toughness clearly indicate that both phosphides belong to a family of hard phases and can be considered as prospective binders for diamond and cubic boron nitride.
Microstructure and mechanical properties of bulk polycristalline rhombohedral boron subnitride B13N2 synthesized by crystallization from the B-BN melt at 7 GPa have been systematically studied by micro- and nanoindentation, atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The obtained data on hardness, elastic properties and fracture toughness clearly indicate that B13N2 belongs to a family of superhard phases and can be considered as a promising superabrasive or binder for cubic boron nitride.
Nanostructure and mechanical properties of bulk nanocristalline cubic boron nitride have been studied by transmission electron microscopy, and micro- and nanoindentation. The obtained data on hardness, elastic properties and fracture toughness clearly indicate that nano-cBN belongs to a family of advanced ultra-hard materials.
Amorphous boron carbide (B4C) thin films are by far the most popular form for the neutron converting layers in the 10B-based neutron detectors, which are a rising trend in detector technologies in response to the increasing scarcity and price of 3He, the standard material for neutron detection. The microstructure of the B4C films is closely related to the important properties, e.g. density and adhesion, for the converting layers, which eventually affect the detection efficiency and the long-term stability of the detectors. To study the influence from substrates of different roughness and mater…
Binary metallic carbides belong to a technologically prominent class of materials. We have explored the structural, mechanical, electronic, optical, and some thermophysical properties of XC (X = Nb, Ta, Ti) binary metallic carbides in details employing first-principles method. Some of the results obtained are novel. A comparative analysis has been made.
We have systematically studied the mechanical stability of group V transition metal carbides TMC$_2$ (TM = Hf, Ta, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, and Au) in the pyrite and fluorite phase, by calculating their elastic constants within the density functional theory scheme. It was found that all but ReC$_2$ and OsC$_2$ are stable in pyrite phase. On the other hand, all metal carbides studied were unstable in the fluorite phase.
Based on a numerical ab initio study, we discuss a structure model for a broad boron sheet, which is the analog of a single graphite sheet, and the precursor of boron nanotubes. The sheet has linear chains of sp hybridized sigma bonds lying only along its armchair direction, a high stiffness, and anisotropic bonds properties. The puckering of the sheet is explained as a mechanism to stabilize the sp sigma bonds. The anisotropic bond properties of the boron sheet lead to a two-dimensional reference lattice structure, which is rectangular rather than triangular. As a consequence the chiral angle…
Boron carbide is a ceramic material with unique properties widely used in numerous, including armor, applications. Its mechanical properties, mechanism of compression, and limits of stability are of both scientific and practical value. Here, we report the behavior of the stoichiometric boron carbide B13C2 studied on single crystals up to 68 GPa. As revealed by synchrotron X-ray diffraction, B13C2 maintains its crystal structure and does not undergo phase transitions. Accurate measurements of the unit cell and B12 icosahedra volumes as a function of pressure led to conclusion that they reduce s…
Hybrid spin-mechanical systems are a promising platform for future quantum technologies. Usually they require application of additional microwave fields to project integer spin to a readable state. We develop a theory of optically detected spin-mechanical resonance associated with half-integer spin defects in silicon carbide (SiC) membranes. It occurs when a spin resonance frequency matches a resonance frequency of a mechanical mode, resulting in a shortening of the spin relaxation time through resonantly enhanced spin-phonon coupling. The effect can be detected as an abrupt reduction of the p…
Atomically thin boron nitride (BN) nanosheets are important two-dimensional nanomaterials with many unique properties distinct from those of graphene, but the investigation of their mechanical properties still greatly lacks. Here we report that high-quality single-crystalline mono- and few-layer BN nanosheets are one of the strongest electrically insulating materials. More intriguingly, few-layer BN shows mechanical behaviors quite different from those of few-layer graphene under indentation. In striking contrast to graphene, whose strength decreases by more than 30% when the number of layers …
Flexible NbC nanocomposite thin films with carbon content ranging from 0 to 99 at.% were deposited at room temperature on Si (100) and polystyrene substrates by non-reactive magnetron sputtering from pure Nb and C targets without applying bias voltage to the substrates. HRTEM images reveal that the films exhibit a nanocomposite structure consisting of NbC nanocrystals (2 to 15 nm in size) embedded in an amorphous carbon matrix. By simply adjusting the Nb flux in the plasma, we can monitor the nanocrystal size and the percent of free-carbon phase in the films, which in turn allows for the tailo…
The most recent experimental advances could provide ways for the fabrication of several atomic thick and planar forms of boron atoms. For the first time, we explore the mechanical properties of five types of boron films with various vacancy ratios ranging from 0.1 to 0.15, using molecular dynamics simulations with ReaxFF force field. It is found that the Young's modulus and tensile strength decrease with increasing the temperature. We found that boron sheets exhibit an anisotropic mechanical response due to the different arrangement of atoms along the armchair and zigzag directions. At room te…

The addition of SnO2 in base matrix increase the defect states in boron carbide and shows unique catalytic properties. The calculated texture coefficient and Nelson Riley factor shows that the synthesized nanocomposite have very high defect states. Also this composite is explored for the first time for catalysis degradation of industrial used dyes. The industrial pollutants such as Novacron red and methylene blue …
Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is an essential component in van der Waals heterostructures as it provides high quality and weakly interacting interfaces that preserve the electronic properties of adjacent materials. While exfoliated flakes of hBN have been extensively studied using electron transport and optical probes, detailed experimental measurements of the energy- and momentum- dependent electronic excitation spectrum are lacking. Here, we directly determine the full valence band (VB) electronic structure of micron-sized exfoliated flakes of hBN using angle-resolved photoemission spectrosc…
We introduce an interatomic potential for hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) based on the Gaussian approximation potential (GAP) machine learning methodology. The potential is based on a training set of configurations collected from density functional theory (DFT) simulations and is capable of treating bulk and multilayer hBN as well as nanotubes of arbitrary chirality. The developed force field faithfully reproduces the potential energy surface predicted by DFT while improving the efficiency by several orders of magnitude. We test our potential by comparing formation energies, geometrical properti…
Current interest in two-dimensional materials extends from graphene to others systems like single-layer hexagonal boron-nitride (h-BN), for the possibility of making heterogeneous structures to achieve exceptional properties that cannot be realized in graphene. The electrically insulating h-BN and semi-metal graphene may open good opportunities to realize a semiconductor by manipulating the morphology and composition of such heterogeneous structures. Here we report the mechanical properties of h-BN and its band structures tuned by mechanical straining by using the density functional theory calcu…
Boron rich chalcogenides have been predicted to have excellent properties for optical and mechanical applications in recent times. In this regard, we report the electronic, optical and mechanical properties of recently synthesized boron rich chalcogenide compounds, B12X (X = S and Se) using density functional theory for the first time. The effects of exchange and correlation functional on these properties are also investigated. The consistency of the obtained crystal structure with the reported experimental results has been checked in terms of lattice parameters. The considered materials are m…
The 4d-transition-metals carbides (ZrC, NbC) and nitrides (ZrN, NbN) in the rocksalt structure, as well as their ternary alloys, have been recently studied by means of a first-principles full potential linearized augmented plane waves method within the local density approximation. These materials are important because of their interesting mechanical and physical properties, which make them suitable for many technological applications. Here, by using a simple theoretical model, we estimate the bulk moduli of their ternary alloys Zr$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$C and Zr$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$N in terms of the bulk modul…
MXenes, a new class of two dimensional materials with several novel properties, are usually prepared from their MAX phases by etching out the A element using strong chemical reagents. This results in passivation of the surfaces of MXene with different functional groups like O, -OH, -F, etc., which in many cases tend to degrade their properties. In this work, using first principle density functional theory based calculations, we propose a novel method to synthesize pristine Ti$_2$C and Ti$_3$C$_2$ MXenes from the bulk titanium carbides with corresponding stoichiometry. Based on the values of cl…
In the present paper we performed the analysis of available data on structural, thermodynamic and mechanical properties of B6O. Although the compound is known for half a century and has been extensively studied, many properties of this boron-rich solid remain unknown or doubtful. Semi-empirical analysis of our experimental and literature data allowed us to choose the best values of main thermodynamic and mechanical characteristics among previously reported data, to predict the thermoelastic equation of state of B6O, and dependence of its hardness on non-stoichiometry and temperature.
