Optical forces are known to arise in a universal fashion in many and diverse physical settings. As such, they are successfully employed over a wide range of applications in areas like biophotonics, optomechanics and integrated optics. While inter-elemental optical forces in few-mode photonic networks have been so far systematically analyzed, little is known, if any, as to how they manifest themselves in highly multimoded optical environments. In this work, by means of statistical mechanics, we formally address this open problem in optically thermalized weakly nonlinear heavily multimode tight-binding networks. The outlined thermodynamic formulation allows one to obtain in an elegant manner analytical results for the exerted thermodynamic pressures in utterly complex arrangements-results that are either computationally intensive or impossible to obtain otherwise. Thus, we derive simple closed-form expressions for the thermodynamic optical pressures displayed among elements, which depend only on the internal energy as well as the coupling coefficients involved. In all cases, our theoretical results are in excellent agreement with numerical computations. Our study may pave the way towards a deeper understanding of these complex processes and could open up avenues in harnessing radiation forces in multimode optomechanical systems.
Dissipative Kerr soliton (DKS) frequency combs - also known as microcombs - have arguably created a new field in cavity nonlinear photonics, with a strong cross-fertilization between theoretical, experimental, and technological research. Spatiotemporal mode-locking (STML) not only add new degrees of freedom to ultrafast laser technology, but also provide new insights for implementing analogue computers and heuristic optimizers with photonics. Here, we combine the principles of DKS and STML for the first time to demonstrate the STML DKS by developing an unexplored ultrahigh-quality-factor Fabry…

We show that, in general, any complex weakly nonlinear highly multimode system can reach thermodynamic equilibrium that is characterized by a unique temperature and chemical potential. The conditions leading to either positive or negative temperatures are explicitly obtained in terms of the linear spectrum of the system, the input power, and the corresponding Hamiltonian invariant. Pertinent examples illustrating these results are provided in various scenarios.
Multimode hollow microcavities in three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals (PhCs) are designed for achieving enhanced coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering, which requires a cavity to have three high quality-factor (Q) modes with equally spaced resonant frequencies. Cavities in 3D PhCs allows more flexibility in design and tuning than their 2D slab counterparts, since radiation loss that degrades Q can be suppressed by the 3D photonic band gap. We first tune all the mode frequencies simultaneously by changing the material and geometry of the cavity based on perturbation theory. Spectral spacin…
We present a new way to mitigate focal-ratio degradation (FRD) when using optical fibers to transport multimode light. Our approach exploits a custom multicore fiber (MCF) with six dissimilar cores that are single mode at ~1550 nm wavelength and minimally coupled over 7 m. We fabricated adiabatic mode-selective photonic lanterns (PLs) at each end of the MCF to create a fiber link with multimode ports, the PLs coupling each spatial mode of the multimode ports to a specific core of the MCF and vice versa. The PL-MCF-PL link exhibits superior FRD behavior compared to a conventional multimode fibe…
The first demonstration of narrowband spectral filtering of multimode light on a 3D integrated photonic chip using photonic lanterns and waveguide Bragg gratings is reported. The photonic lanterns with multi-notch waveguide Bragg gratings were fabricated using the femtosecond direct-write technique in boro-aluminosilicate glass (Corning, Eagle 2000). Transmission dips of up to 5 dB were measured in both photonic lanterns and reference single-mode waveguides with 10.4-mm-long gratings. The result demonstrates efficient and symmetrical performance of each of the gratings in the photonic lantern.…
A multimode optical receiver for free space optical communications (FSOC) based on a photonic lantern and adaptive optics coherent beam combining (CBC) of the lantern's single-mode outputs is proposed and demonstrated for the first time. The use of optical coherent combining in fiber serves to increase the signal to noise ratio compared to similar receivers based on electrically combined signals, and represents an all-fiber approach to low-order adaptive optics. This optical receiver is demonstrated using a photonic lantern with three outputs, fibre couplers and active phase locking, and furth…
We introduce a numerical procedure which permits to drastically accelerate the design of multimode photonic crystal resonators. Specifically, we demonstrate that the optical response of an important class of such nanoscale structures is reproduced accurately by a simple, one-dimensional model, within the entire spectral range of interest. This model can describe a variety of tapered photonic crystal structures. Orders of magnitude faster to solve, our approach can be used to optimize certain properties of the nanoscale cavity. Here we consider the case of a nanobeam cavity, where the confineme…
The recent reports of the replica symmetry breaking (RSB) phenomenon in photonic experiments [1-5] boosted the understanding of the role of disorder in multimode lasers, as well as helped to settle enlightening connections [6-13] with the statistical physics of complex systems. RSB manifests when identically-prepared system replicas reach distinct states, yielding different measures of observable quantities [14]. Here we demonstrate the RSB in the spontaneous mode-locking regime of a conventional multimode Nd:YAG laser in a closed cavity. The underlying mechanism is quite distinct from that of…
On-chip optical interconnect has been widely accepted as a promising technology to realize future large-scale multiprocessors. Mode-division multiplexing (MDM) provides a new degree of freedom for optical interconnects to dramatically increase the link capacity. Present on-chip multimode devices are based on traditional wave-optics. Although large amount of computation and optimization are adopted to support more modes, mode-independent manipulation is still hard to be achieved due to severe mode dispersion. Here, we propose a universal solution to standardize the design of fundamental multimo…

Integrated photonic networks are particularly powerful in performing analog computing of matrix-vector multiplication (MVM) as they afford unparalleled speed and bandwidth density for data transmission. Incorporating nonvolatile phase-change materials in integrated photonic devices enables indispensable programming and in-memory computing capabilities for on-chi…
We demonstrate that photonic lanterns based on tapered multicore fibres provide an efficient way to couple multimode states of light to a two-dimensional array of Single-Photon Avalanche Detectors (SPADs), each of which has its own Time-to-Digital Converter (TDC) for Time-Correlated Single-Photon-Counting (TCSPC). Exploiting this capability, we demonstrate multiplexed single-mode wavelength-to-time conversion of multimode states of light using a multicore-fibre photonic lantern with 121 single-mode cores, coupled in a one-to-one fashion to 121 SPADS on a 32 $\times$ 32 pixel CMOS SPAD array. Photonic lanterns allow for a low-loss transformation of a multimode waveguide into a discrete number of single-mode waveguides and vice versa, thus, enabling the use of single-mode photonic technologies in multimode systems. In this review, we will discuss the theory and function of the photonic lantern, along with several different variants of the technology. We will also discuss some of its applications in more detail.
Photonic lanterns are made by adiabatically merging several single-mode cores into one multimode core. They provide low-loss interfaces between single-mode and multimode systems where the precise optical mapping between cores and individual modes is unimportant.
There are numerous advantages to exploiting diffraction-limited instrumentation at astronomical observatories, which include smaller footprints, less mechanical and thermal instabilities and high levels of performance. To realize such instrumentation it is imperative to convert the atmospheric seeing-limited signal that is captured by the telescope into a diffraction-limited signal. This process can be achieved photonically by using a mode reformatting device known as a photonic lantern that performs a multimode to single-mode transition. With the aim of developing an optimized integrated phot…
Photonic crystal (PC) coupled cavity waveguides (CCWs) with \textit{completely separated eigenfrequencies} (or supermodes) are investigated. Using a coupled mode theory, the properties of the supermodes, such as the electric field profiles, the eigenfrequencies (including the central frequencies and corresponding linewidths), and the quality factors (Qs) are expressed in very simple formulas, and these results agree well with those of ``exact'' numerical method. We also discuss the great differences between the supermodes and \textit{continuous modes}, which are described by tight binding (TB)…
Exceptional points are a ubiquitous concept widely present in driven-dissipative coupled systems described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. It is characterized by the degeneracy of the Hamiltonian's eigenvalues and coalescence of corresponding eigenvectors. Recent developments demonstrated that exceptional points can play an important role in photonics. However, to date, exceptional points have been extensively examined in the systems supporting only a few optical modes, thereby leaving the observation of collective (multimode) effects outside of the scope of study. In the present paper, we ana…
For the past forty years, optical fibres have found widespread use in ground-based and space-based instruments. In most applications, these fibres are used in conjunction with conventional optics to transport light. But photonics offers a huge range of optical manipulations beyond light transport that were rarely exploited before 2001. The fundamental obstacle to the broader use of photonics is the difficulty of achieving photonic action in a multimode fibre. The first step towards a general solution was the invention of the photonic lantern (Leon-Saval, Birks & Bland-Hawthorn 2005) and the de…
With advanced micro- and nano-photonic structures, the vacuum photon-photon coupling rate is anticipated to approach the intrinsic loss rate and lead to unconventional quantum effects. Here, we investigate the classical-to-quantum transition of such photonic nonlinear systems using the quantum cluster-expansion method, which addresses the computational challenge in tracking large photon number states of the fundamental and harmonic optical fields involved in the second harmonic generation process. Compared to the mean-field approximation used in weak coupling limit, the quantum cluster-expansi…

Teleportation plays an important role in the communication of quantum information between the nodes of a quantum network and is viewed as an essential ingredient for long-distance Quantum Cryptography. We describe a method to teleport the quantum information carried by a photon in a superposition of a number $d$ of light modes (a "qudit") by the help of $d$ additional photons based on transcription. A qudit encoded into a single excitation of $d$ light modes (in our case Laguerre-Gauss modes which carry orbital angular momentum) is transcribed to $d$ single-rail photonic qubits, which are spat…
The thin and flexible nature of optical fibres often makes them the ideal technology to view biological processes in-vivo, but current microendoscopic approaches are limited in spatial resolution. Here, we demonstrate a new route to high resolution microendoscopy using a multicore fibre (MCF) with an adiabatic multimode-to-singlemode photonic lantern transition formed at the distal end by tapering. We show that distinct multimode patterns of light can be projected from the output of the lantern by individually exciting the single-mode MCF cores, and that these patterns are highly stable to fib…
We report on the fabrication and characterization of composite multimode waveguide structures that consist of a stack of single-mode waveguides fabricated by ultrafast laser inscription. We explore 2 types of composite structures; those that consist of overlapping single-mode waveguides which offer the maximum effective index contrast and non overlapped structures which support multiple modes via strong evanescent coupling. We demonstrate that both types of waveguides have negligible propagation losses (to within experimental uncertainty) for light injected with focal ratios >8, which correspo…
An ultrafast single-pixel optical 2D imaging system using a single multimode fiber (MF) is proposed. The MF acted as the all-optical random pattern generator. Light with different wavelengths pass through a single MF will generator all-optical random speckle patterns, which have a low correlation of 0.074 with 0.1nm wavelength step from 1518.0nm to 1567.9nm. The all-optical random speckle patterns are perfect for compressive sensing (CS) imaging with the advantage of low cost in comparison with the conventional expensive pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS). Besides, with the employment of phot…
Multimode receivers based on spatial or modal diversity are promising architectures to mitigate in real time the atmospheric turbulence effects for free space optical (FSO) communications. In this paper, we evaluate and comment on the dynamical communication performances of a FSO mode diversity receiver, based on a spatial demultiplexer and a silicon photonic coherent combiner, for an optical link from a GEO satellite to an optical ground station (OGS). We simulate time series of distorted wavefronts received by the OGS and we show numerically that the coherent combination of spatial modes mit…
A photonic integrated circuit (PIC) comprised of an 11 cm multimode speckle waveguide, a 1x32 splitter, and a linear grating coupler array is fabricated and utilized to receive 2 GHz of radio-frequency (RF) signal bandwidth from 2.5 to 4.5 GHz using compressive sensing (CS). Incoming RF signals are modulated onto chirped optical pulses which are input to the multimode waveguide. The multimode waveguide produces the random projections needed for CS via optical speckle. The time-varying phase and amplitude of two test RF signals between 2.5 and 4.5 GHz are successfully recovered using the standa…
Few-photon transport via waveguide-coupled local quantum systems has attracted extensive theoretical and experimental studies. Most of the study has focused on atomic or atomic-like local quantum systems due to their strong light-matter interaction useful for quantum applications. Here, we study few-photon transport via a waveguide-coupled multimode optical cavity with second-order bulk nonlinearity. We develop a Feynman diagram approach and compute the scattering matrix of the one- and two-photon transport. Based on the calculated scattering matrix, we show highly nonclassical photonic effect…

Multimode entanglement is an essential resource for quantum information in continuous-variable systems. Light-based quantum technologies will arguably not be built upon table-top bulk setups, but will presumably rather resort to integrated optics. Sequential bulk optics-like proposals based on cascaded integrated interferometers are not scalable with the current state-of-the-art low-loss materials used for continuous variables. We analyze the multimode continuous-variable entanglement capabilities of a compact currently-available integrated device without bulk-optics analog: the array of nonli…
We report on the development of a compact (volume $\approx$ 100\:cm$^3$), multimode diffraction-limited Raman spectrograph and probe designed to be compact as possible. The spectrograph uses `off the shelf' optics, a custom 3D-printed two-part housing and harnesses a multi-core fibre (MCF) photonic lantern (multimode to few-mode converter), which slices a large 40~\textmu m multimode input into a near-diffraction-limited 6~\textmu m aperture. Our unique design utilises the hexagonal geometry of our MCF, permitting high multimode collection efficiency with near-diffraction-limited performance i…
Resonant structures in modern nanophotonics are non-Hermitian (leaky and lossy), and support quasinormal modes. Moreover, contemporary cavities frequently include 2D materials to exploit and resonantly enhance their nonlinear properties or provide tunability. Such materials add further modeling complexity due to their infinitesimally thin nature and strong dispersion. Here, a formalism for efficiently analyzing third harmonic generation (THG) in nanoparticles and metasurfaces incorporating 2D materials is proposed. It is based on numerically calculating the quasinormal modes in the nanostructu…
Multi-photon propagation in connected structures - a quantum walk - offers the potential for simulating complex physical systems and provides a route to universal quantum computation. Increasing the complexity of quantum photonic networks where the walk occurs is essential for many applications. Here, we implement a quantum walk of indistinguishable photon pairs in a multimode fiber supporting 380 modes. Using wavefront shaping, we control the propagation of the two-photon state through the fiber in which all modes are coupled. Excitation of arbitrary output modes of the system is realized by …
The complex nonlinear behaviors of heavily multimode lightwave structures have been recently the focus of considerable attention. Here we develop an optical thermodynamic approach capable of describing the thermalization dynamics in large scale nonlinear photonic chain networks - a problem that has remained unresolved so far. A Sackur-Tetrode equation is obtained that explicitly provides the entropy of these systems in terms of all the extensive variables involved. This entropic description leads to a self-consistent set of equations of state from where the optical temperature and chemical pot…

Neural networks are one of the disruptive computing concepts of our time. However, they fundamentally differ from classical, algorithmic computing in a number of fundamental aspects. These differences result in equally fundamental, severe and relevant challenges for neural network computing using current computing substrates. Neural networks urge for parallelism across the entire processor and for a co-location of memory and arithmetic, i.e. beyond von Neumann architectures. Parallelism in particular made photonics a highly promising platform, yet until now scalable and integratable concepts a…
As an important degree of freedom (DoF) in integrated photonic circuits, the orthogonal transverse mode provides a promising and flexible way to increasing communication capability, for both classical and quantum information processing. To construct large-scale on-chip multimode multi-DoF quantum systems, a transverse mode-encoded controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate is necessary. Here, through design and integrate transverse mode-dependent directional coupler and attenuators on a silicon photonic chip, we demonstrate the first multimode implementation of a two-qubit quantum gate. With the aid of state …
We bring together a cavity-enhanced light-matter interface with a multimode interferometer (MMI) integrated onto a photonic chip and demonstrate the potential of such hybrid systems to tailor distributed entanglement in a quantum network. The MMI is operated with pairs of narrowband photons produced a priori deterministically from a single 87Rb atom strongly coupled to a high-finesse optical cavity. Non-classical coincidences between photon detection events show no loss of coherence when interfering pairs of these photons through the MMI in comparison to the two-photon visibility directly meas…
A systematic approach for deriving tight-binding approximations in general longitudinally driven lattices is presented. As prototypes, honeycomb and staggered square lattices are considered. Time-reversal symmetry is broken by varying/rotating the waveguides, longitudinally, along the direction of propagation. Different sublattice rotation and structure are allowed. Linear Floquet bands are constructed for intricate sublattice rotation patterns such as counter rotation, phase offset rotation, as well as different lattice sizes and frequencies. An asymptotic analysis of the edge modes, valid in…

Silica nanofibers fabricated by tapering optical fibers have attracted considerable interest as an ultimate platform for high-efficiency light-matter interactions. While previously demonstrated applications relied exclusively on the low-loss transmission of only the fundamental mode, the implementation of multimode tapers that adiabatically transmit several modes has remained very challenging, hindering their use in various emerging applications in multimode nonlinear optics and quantum optics. Here, we report the first realization of multimode submicron tapers that permit the simultaneous adi…
A new tuning mechanism is introduced in high-Q multimode photonic crystal resonators allowing to harness the resonant enhancement of the parametric resonance systematically.
