Photonic lanterns are made by adiabatically merging several single-mode cores into one multimode core. They provide low-loss interfaces between single-mode and multimode systems where the precise optical mapping between cores and individual modes is unimportant.
A multimode optical receiver for free space optical communications (FSOC) based on a photonic lantern and adaptive optics coherent beam combining (CBC) of the lantern's single-mode outputs is proposed and demonstrated for the first time. The use of optical coherent combining in fiber serves to increase the signal to noise ratio compared to similar receivers based on electrically combined signals, and represents an all-fiber approach to low-order adaptive optics. This optical receiver is demonstrated using a photonic lantern with three outputs, fibre couplers and active phase locking, and furth…
We present a new way to mitigate focal-ratio degradation (FRD) when using optical fibers to transport multimode light. Our approach exploits a custom multicore fiber (MCF) with six dissimilar cores that are single mode at ~1550 nm wavelength and minimally coupled over 7 m. We fabricated adiabatic mode-selective photonic lanterns (PLs) at each end of the MCF to create a fiber link with multimode ports, the PLs coupling each spatial mode of the multimode ports to a specific core of the MCF and vice versa. The PL-MCF-PL link exhibits superior FRD behavior compared to a conventional multimode fibe…

The thin and flexible nature of optical fibres often makes them the ideal technology to view biological processes in-vivo, but current microendoscopic approaches are limited in spatial resolution. Here, we demonstrate a new route to high resolution microendoscopy using a multicore fibre (MCF) with an adiabatic multimode-to-singlemode photonic lantern transition formed at the distal end by tapering. We show that distinct multimode patterns of light can be projected from the output of the lantern by individually exciting the single-mode MCF cores, and that these patterns are highly stable to fib…
Photonic lanterns allow the decomposition of highly multimodal light into a simplified modal basis such as single-moded and/or few-moded. They are increasingly finding uses in astronomy, optics and telecommunications. Calculating propagation through a photonic lantern using traditional algorithms takes $\sim 1$ hour per simulation on a modern CPU. This paper demonstrates that neural networks can bridge the disparate opto-electronic systems, and when trained can achieve a speed-up of over 5 orders of magnitude. We show that this approach can be used to model photonic lanterns with manufacturing…
In ground-based astronomy, starlight distorted by the atmosphere couples poorly into single-mode waveguides but a correction by adaptive optics, even if only partial, can boost coupling into the few-mode regime allowing the use of photonic lanterns to convert into multiple single-mode beams. Corrected wavefronts result in focal patterns that couple mostly with the circularly symmetric waveguide modes. A mode-selective photonic lantern is hence proposed to convert the multimode light into a subset of the single-mode waveguides of the standard photonic lantern, thereby reducing the required numb…

We report on the development of a compact (volume $\approx$ 100\:cm$^3$), multimode diffraction-limited Raman spectrograph and probe designed to be compact as possible. The spectrograph uses `off the shelf' optics, a custom 3D-printed two-part housing and harnesses a multi-core fibre (MCF) photonic lantern (multimode to few-mode converter), which slices a large 40~\textmu m multimode input into a near-diffraction-limited 6~\textmu m aperture. Our unique design utilises the hexagonal geometry of our MCF, permitting high multimode collection efficiency with near-diffraction-limited performance i…

The PolyOculus technology produces large-area-equivalent telescopes by using fiber optics to link modules of multiple semi-autonomous, small, inexpensive, commercial-off-the-shelf telescopes. Crucially, this scalable design has construction costs which are > 10x lower than equivalent traditional large-area telescopes. We have developed a novel photonic lantern approach for the PolyOculus fiber optic linkages which potentially offers substantial advantages over previously considered free-space optical linkages, including much higher coupling efficiencies. We have carried out the first laborator…
Photonic lanterns rely on a close packed arrangement of single mode fibers, which are tapered and fused into one multi-mode core. Topologically optimal circle packing arrangements have been well studied. Using this, we fabricate PLs with 19 and 37 SMFs showing tightly packed, ordered arrangements with packing densities of 95 % and 99 % of theoretically achievable values, with mean adjacent core separations of 1.03 and 1.08 fiber diameters, respectively. We demonstrate that topological circle packing data is a good predictor for optimal PL parameters.
Starlight corrupted by atmospheric turbulence cannot couple efficiently into astronomical instruments based on integrated optics as they require light of high spatial coherence to couple into their single-mode waveguides. Low-order adaptive optics in combination with photonic lanterns offer a practical approach to achieve efficient coupling into multiplexed astrophotonic devices. We investigate, aided by simulations and an experimental testbed, the trade-off between the degrees of freedom of the adaptive optics system and those of the input waveguide of an integrated optic component leading to…
The photonic lantern (PL) is a tapered waveguide that can efficiently couple light into multiple single-mode optical fibers. Such devices are currently being considered for a number of tasks, including the coupling of telescopes and high-resolution, fiber-fed spectrometers, coherent detection, nulling interferometry, and vortex-fiber nulling (VFN). In conjunction with these use cases, PLs can simultaneously perform low-order focal-plane wavefront sensing. In this work, we provide a mathematical framework for the analysis of the photonic lantern wavefront sensor (PLWFS), deriving linear and hig…

We show that, in general, any complex weakly nonlinear highly multimode system can reach thermodynamic equilibrium that is characterized by a unique temperature and chemical potential. The conditions leading to either positive or negative temperatures are explicitly obtained in terms of the linear spectrum of the system, the input power, and the corresponding Hamiltonian invariant. Pertinent examples illustrating these results are provided in various scenarios.

We introduce a numerical procedure which permits to drastically accelerate the design of multimode photonic crystal resonators. Specifically, we demonstrate that the optical response of an important class of such nanoscale structures is reproduced accurately by a simple, one-dimensional model, within the entire spectral range of interest. This model can describe a variety of tapered photonic crystal structures. Orders of magnitude faster to solve, our approach can be used to optimize certain properties of the nanoscale cavity. Here we consider the case of a nanobeam cavity, where the confineme…

Dynamical radiation pressure effects in cavity optomechanical systems give rise to self-sustained oscillations or `phonon lasing' behavior, producing stable oscillators up to GHz frequencies in nanoscale devices. Like in photonic lasers, phonon lasing normally occurs in a single mechanical mode. We show here that phase-locked, multimode phonon lasing can be established in a multimode optomechanical system through Floquet dynamics induced by a temporally modulated laser drive. We demonstrate this concept in a suitably engineered silicon photonic nanocavity coupled to multiple GHz-frequency mech…

Demonstration of a photonic lantern focal-plane wavefront sensor: measurement of atmospheric wavefront error modes and low wind effect in the non-linear regime
An ultrafast single-pixel optical 2D imaging system using a single multimode fiber (MF) is proposed. The MF acted as the all-optical random pattern generator. Light with different wavelengths pass through a single MF will generator all-optical random speckle patterns, which have a low correlation of 0.074 with 0.1nm wavelength step from 1518.0nm to 1567.9nm. The all-optical random speckle patterns are perfect for compressive sensing (CS) imaging with the advantage of low cost in comparison with the conventional expensive pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS). Besides, with the employment of phot…

On-chip optical interconnect has been widely accepted as a promising technology to realize future large-scale multiprocessors. Mode-division multiplexing (MDM) provides a new degree of freedom for optical interconnects to dramatically increase the link capacity. Present on-chip multimode devices are based on traditional wave-optics. Although large amount of computation and optimization are adopted to support more modes, mode-independent manipulation is still hard to be achieved due to severe mode dispersion. Here, we propose a universal solution to standardize the design of fundamental multimo…
