The young and well-studied planetary nebula NGC 7027 harbors significant molecular gas that is irradiated by luminous, point-like UV (central star) and diffuse (shocked nebular) X-ray emission. This nebula represents an excellent subject to investigate the molecular chemistry and physical conditions within photon- and X-ray-dominated regions (PDRs and XDRs). As yet, the exact formation routes of CO$^+$ and HCO$^+$ in PN environments remain uncertain. Here, we present $\sim$2$"$ resolution maps of NGC 7027 in the irradiation tracers CO$^+$ and HCO$^+$, obtained with the IRAM NOEMA interferometer, along with SMA CO and HST 2.12~$μ$m H$_2$ data for context. The CO$^+$ map constitutes the first interferometric map of this molecular ion in any PN. Comparison of CO$^+$ and HCO$^+$ maps reveal strikingly different emission morphologies, as well as a systematic spatial displacement between the two molecules; the regions of brightest HCO$^+$, found along the central waist of the nebula, are radially offset by $\sim$1$"$ ($\sim$900 au) outside the corresponding CO$^+$ emission peaks. The CO$^+$ emission furthermore precisely traces the inner boundaries of the nebula's PDR (as delineated by near-IR H$_2$ emission), suggesting that central star UV emission drives CO$^+$ formation. The displacement of HCO$^+$ radially outward with respect to CO$^+$ is indicative that dust-penetrating soft X-rays are responsible for enhancing the HCO$^+$ abundance in the surrounding molecular envelope, forming an XDR. These interferometric CO$^+$ and HCO$^+$ observations of NGC 7027 thus clearly establish the spatial distinction between the PDR and XDR formed (respectively) by intense UV and X-ray irradiation of molecular gas.
In the circumnuclear region of the nearby radio galaxy NGC~1052. Our $λ$3mm VLBI observations with the Korean VLBI Network have spatially resolved the broad HCO$^{+}$ absorption at a velocity range of 1350--1850 km~s$^{-1}$ against a double-sided nuclear jet, and have revealed that the HCO$^{+}$ absorption is concentrated on the receding jet and the nuclear components. The distribution of the HCO$^{+}$ absorbing gas strongly supports the circumnuclear torus surrounding the supermassive black hole. From the estimations of the column density and the volume density of molecular hydrogen, the size…
We present observations of the dense molecular gas tracers HCN, HNC, and HCO+ in the J=1-0 transition using ALMA. We supplement our datasets with previous observations of CO J=1-0, which traces the total molecular gas content. We separate the Antennae into 7 bright regions in which we detect emission from all three molecules, including the nuclei of NGC 4038 and NGC 4039, 5 super giant molecular complexes in the overlap region and 2 additional bright clouds. We find that the ratio of L(HCN)/L(CO), which traces the dense molecular gas fraction, is greater in the two nuclei (L(HCN)/L(CO) ~ 0.07 …
We report ~2" resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of the HCN(1-0), HCO+(1-0), CO(1-0), CO(2-1), and CO(3-2) lines towards the nearby merging double-nucleus galaxy NGC 3256. We find that the high density gas outflow traced in HCN(1-0) and HCO+(1-0) emission is co-located with the diffuse molecular outflow emanating from the southern nucleus, where a low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN) is believed to be the dominant source of the far-infrared luminosity. On the other hand, the same lines were undetected in the outflow region associated with the northern …
Molecular abundances are sensitive to UV-photon flux and cosmic-ray ionization rate. In starburst environments, the effects of high-energy photons and particles are expected to be stronger. We examine these astrochemical signatures through multiple transitions of HCO$^+$ and its metastable isomer HOC$^+$ in the center of the starburst galaxy NGC 253 using data from the ALMA large program ALCHEMI. The distribution of the HOC$^+$(1-0) integrated intensity shows its association with "superbubbles", cavities created either by supernovae or expanding HII regions. The observed HCO$^+$/HOC$^+$ abunda…
Dense molecular gas tracers in the central 1 kpc region of the superwind galaxy NGC 1808 have been imaged by ALMA at a resolution of 1" (~50 pc). Integrated intensities and line intensity ratios of HCN (1-0), H$^{13}$CN (1-0), HCO$^+$ (1-0), H$^{13}$CO$^+$ (1-0), HOC$^+$ (1-0), HCO$^+$ (4-3), CS (2-1), C$_2$H (1-0), and previously detected CO (1-0) and CO (3-2) are presented. SiO (2-1) and HNCO (4-3) are detected toward the circumnuclear disk (CND), indicating the presence of shocked dense gas. There is evidence that an enhanced intensity ratio of HCN(1-0)/HCO$^+$(1-0) reflects star formation …
We present results of millimeter line observations toward four local gas-rich galaxies (NGC 3079, NGC 4258, NGC 6240 and VII Zw 31) with the IRAM 30 meter millimeter telescope. More than 33 lines in these four sources were detected, including normal dense gas tracers (HCN 1-0, HCO$^+$ 1-0, and C$_2$H 1-0, etc) and their isotopic species. H$^{13}$CN (1-0) and H$^{13}$CO$^+$ (1-0) are detected for the first time in NGC 4258. Optical depths of HCN 1-0 and HCO$^{+}$ 1-0 were estimated with detected isotopic lines in NGC 4258, which were 4.1 and 2.6, respectively. HC$_3$N $J=29-28$, which requires …
With the incorporation of high-J molecular lines, we aim to constrain the physical conditions of the dense gas in the central region of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 and to determine signatures of the AGN or the starburst contribution. We used the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope to observe the J=4-3 transition of HCN, HNC, and HCO+, as well as the CN N_J=2_{5/2}-1_{3/2} and N_J=3_{5/2}-2_{5/2}, in NGC 1068. We estimate the excitation conditions of HCN, HNC, and CN, based on the line intensity ratios and radiative transfer models. We find that the bulk emission of HCN, HNC, CN, and the high-J HCO…
We present the results of our ALMA observations of three AGN-dominated nuclei in optical Seyfert 1 galaxies (NGC 7469, I Zw 1, and IC 4329 A) and eleven luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) with various levels of infrared estimated energetic contributions by AGNs at the HCN and HCO+ J=3-2 emission lines. The HCN and HCO+ J=3-2 emission lines are clearly detected at the main nuclei of all sources, except for IC 4329 A. The vibrationally excited (v2=1f) HCN J=3-2 and HCO+ J=3-2 emission lines are simultaneously covered, and HCN v2=1f J=3-2 emission line signatures are seen in the main nuclei of tw…
Both Galactic and extragalactic studies on star formation suggest that stars form directly from dense molecular gas. To trace such high volume density gas, HCN and HCO+ J=1-0 have been widely used for their high dipole moments, relatively high abundances, and often being the strongest lines after CO. However, HCN and HCO+ J=1-0 emission could be arguably dominated by the gas components at low volume densities. HCN J=2-1 and HCO+ J=2-1, with more suitable critical densities and excitation requirements, would trace typical dense gas closely related to star formation. Here we report new observati…
We present the first 100 pc scale view of the dense molecular gas in the central ~ 1.3 kpc region of the type-1 Seyfert NGC 1097 traced by HCN (J=4-3) and HCO+ (J=4-3) lines afforded with ALMA band 7. This galaxy shows significant HCN enhancement with respect to HCO+ and CO in the low-J transitions, which seems to be a common characteristic in AGN environments. Using the ALMA data, we study the characteristics of the dense gas around this AGN and search for the mechanism of HCN enhancement. We find a high HCN (J=4-3) to HCO+ (J=4-3) line ratio in the nucleus. The upper limit of the brightness …
We present 3 mm observations obtained with the IRAM 30-m telescope for ten nearby gas-rich active galaxies spanning three orders of magnitude in infrared luminosity. Emission lines of HCO+(1-0), HCN(1-0), and C2H(1-0) were simultaneously detected in most galaxies of our sample. We also tentatively detected the rare isotopic species, H13CN, HC15N and H13CO+ in up to four galaxies (IC 694, NGC 3690, NGC 4258 and NGC 6240). Our estimation shows that the optical depth of HCN is low to moderate in these galaxies (tau ~ 1-5). After comparing the intensity ratios of different molecular emission lines…
The 3 mm wavelength spectra of 10 galaxies have been obtained at the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory using a new, very broadband receiver and spectrometer, called the Redshift Search Receiver (RSR). The RSR has an instantaneous bandwidth of 37 GHz covering frequencies from 74 to 111 GHz, and has a spectral resolution of 31 MHz (~100 km/s). During tests of the RSR on the FCRAO 14 m telescope the complete 3 mm spectra of the central regions of NGC 253, Maffei 2, NGC1068, IC 342, M82, NGC 3079, NGC 3690, NGC 4258, Arp 220 and NGC 6240 were obtained. Within the wavelength band covered by …
We present the results of our ALMA Cycle 4 high-spatial-resolution (0.04-0.07") observations, at HCN J=3-2 and HCO+ J=3-2 lines, of the nucleus of NGC 1068, the nearby prototypical type 2 active galactic nucleus (AGN). Our previous ALMA observations identified the compact emission of these lines at the putative location of the torus around a mass-accreting supermassive black hole. We now report that we have detected the rotation of this compact emission, with the eastern and western sides being redshifted and blueshifted, respectively. Unlike the previously reported CO J=6-5 emission, both the…
We present the results of our ALMA Cycle 2 high angular resolution (0.1-0.2 arcsec) observations of the nuclear region of the nearby well-studied type-2 active galactic nucleus (AGN), NGC 1068, at HCN J=3-2 and HCO+ J=3-2 emission lines. For the first time, due to a higher angular resolution than previous studies, we clearly detected dense molecular gas emission at the putative AGN location, identified as a ~1.1 mm (~266 GHz) continuum emission peak, by separating this emission from brighter emission located at 0.5-2.0 arcsec on the eastern and western sides of the AGN. The estimated intrinsic…
Context. Ionization plays a central role in the gas-phase chemistry of molecular clouds. Since ions are coupled with magnetic fields, which can in turn counteract gravitational collapse, it is of paramount importance to measure their abundance in star-forming regions. Aims. We use spectral line observations of the high-mass star-forming region NGC 6334 I to derive the abundance of two of the most abundant molecular ions, HCO+ and N2H+, and consequently, the cosmic ray ionization rate. In addition, the line profiles provide information about the kinematics of this region. Methods. We present hi…
We report ALMA observations of NGC 1052 to quest mass accretion in a gas-poor active galactic nucleus (AGN). We detected CO emission representing a rotating ring-like circumnuclear disk (CND) seen edge-on with the gas mass of $5.3 \times 10^{5}$ M$_{\odot}$. The CND has smaller gas mass than that in typical Seyfert galaxies with circumnuclear star formation and is too gas-poor to drive mass accretion onto the central engine. The continuum emission casts molecular absorption features of CO, HCN, HCO$^+$, SO, SO$_2$, CS, CN, and H$_2$O, with H$^{13}$CN and HC$^{15}$N and vibrationally-excited (v…
We report ALMA observations of molecular gas and continuum emission in the 90 and 350 GHz bands toward a nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 613. Radio continuum emissions were detected at 95 and 350 GHz from both the circum-nuclear disk (CND) ($r\leq90$ pc) and a star-forming ring (250 pc $\leq r\leq 340$ pc), and the 95 GHz continuum was observed to extend from the center at a position angle of $20^{\circ} \pm 8^{\circ}$. The archival 4.9 GHz data and our 95 GHz data show spectral indices of $α\leq -0.6$ and $-0.2$ along the jets and in the star-forming ring; these can be produced by synchrotron emiss…
We present HCN J=4-3 and HCO^+ J=4-3 maps of six nearby star-forming galaxies, NGC 253, NGC 1068, IC 342, M82, M83, and NGC 6946, obtained with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope as part of the MALATANG survey. All galaxies were mapped in the central 2 arcmin $\times$ 2 arcmin region at 14 arcsec (FWHM) resolution (corresponding to linear scales of ~ 0.2-1.0 kpc). The L_IR-L'_dense relation, where the dense gas is traced by the HCN J=4-3 and the HCO^+ J=4-3 emission, measured in our sample of spatially-resolved galaxies is found to follow the linear correlation established globally in galaxies …
Certain planetary nebulae contain shells, filaments, or globules of cold gas and dust whose heating and chemistry are likely driven by UV and X-ray emission from their central stars and from wind-collision-generated shocks. We present the results of a survey of molecular line emission in the 88-236 GHz range from nine nearby (<1.5 kpc) planetary nebulae spanning a range of UV and X-ray luminosities, using the 30 m telescope of the Institut de Radioastronomie Millimetrique. Rotational transitions of thirteen molecules, including CO isotopologues and chemically important trace species, were obse…
Aims. We present new IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer observations of Arp 220 in HCN, HCO$^{+}$, HN$^{13}$C J=1-0, C$_{2}$H N=1-0, SiO J = 2-1, HNCO J$_{k,k'}$ = 5$_{0,4}$ - 4$_{0,4}$, CH$_{3}$CN(6-5), CS J=2-1 and 5-4 and $^{13}$CO J=1-0 and 2-1 and of NGC 6240 in HCN, HCO$^{+}$ J = 1-0 and C$_{2}$H N = 1-0. In addition, we present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillmeter Array science verification observations of Arp 220 in CS J = 4-3 and CH$_{3}$CN(10-9). Various lines are used to analyse the physical conditions of the molecular gas including the [$^{12}$CO]/[$^{13}$CO] and [$^{12}$CO]/[C$^…
We present the results of HCN/HCO+/HNC J=4-3 transition line observations of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 1614, obtained with ALMA Cycle 0. We find that high density molecular gas, traced with these lines, shows a velocity structure such that the northern (southern) side of the nucleus is redshifted (blueshifted) with respect to the nuclear velocity of this galaxy. The redshifted and blueshifted emission peaks are offset by ~0.6" at the northern and southern sides of the nucleus, respectively. At these offset positions, observations at infrared >3 micron indicate the presence of active dust…
We present results from a study of the dense circum-nuclear molecular gas of starburst galaxies. The study aims to investigate the interplay between starbursts, active galactic nuclei and molecular gas. We characterise the dense gas traced by HCN, HCO$^{+}$ and HNC and examine its kinematics in the circum-nuclear regions of nine starburst galaxies observed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We detect HCN (1$-$0) and HCO$^{+}$ (1$-$0) in seven of the nine galaxies and HNC (1$-$0) in four. Approximately 7 arcsec resolution maps of the circum-nuclear molecular gas are presented. The velo…
The complex physical, kinematic, and chemical properties of galaxy centres make them interesting environments to examine with molecular line emission. We present new $2-4$" (${\sim}75{-}150$ pc at $7.7$ Mpc) observations at 2 and 3 mm covering the central $50$" (${\sim}1.9$ kpc) of the nearby double-barred spiral galaxy NGC 6946 obtained with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer. We detect spectral lines from ten molecules: CO, HCN, HCO$^+$, HNC, CS, HC$_3$N, N$_2$H$^+$, C$_2$H, CH$_3$OH, and H$_2$CO. We complemented these with published 1mm CO observations and 33 GHz continuum observations…
We present ALMA Cycle 1 observations of the central kpc region of the luminous type-1 Seyfert galaxy NGC 7469 with unprecedented high resolution (0.5$"$ $\times$ 0.4$"$ = 165 pc $\times$ 132 pc) at submillimeter wavelengths. Utilizing the wide-bandwidth of ALMA, we simultaneously obtained HCN(4-3), HCO$^+$(4-3), CS(7-6), and partially CO(3-2) line maps, as well as the 860 $μ$m continuum. The region consists of the central $\sim$ 1$"$ component and the surrounding starburst ring with a radius of $\sim$ 1.5$"$-2.5$"$. Several structures connect these components. Except for CO(3-2), these dense g…
This is the fourth paper of a series investigating the AGN fuelling/feedback processes in a sample of eleven nearby low-excitation radio galaxies (LERGs). In this paper we present follow-up Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of one source, NGC3100, targeting the $^{12}$CO(1-0), $^{12}$CO(3-2), HCO$^{+}$(4-3), SiO(3-2) and HNCO(6-5) molecular transitions. $^{12}$CO(1-0) and $^{12}$CO(3-2) lines are nicely detected and complement our previous $^{12}$CO(2-1) data. By comparing the relative strength of these three CO transitions, we find extreme gas excitation conditi…
We present new IRAM 30m spectroscopic observations of the $\sim88$ GHz band, including emission from the CCH (n=1-0) multiplet, HCN (1-0), HCO+ (1-0), and HNC (1-0), for a sample of 58 local luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies from the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS). By combining our new IRAM data with literature data and Spitzer/IRS spectroscopy, we study the correspondence between these putative tracers of dense gas and the relative contribution of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and star formation to the mid-infrared luminosity of each system. We find the HCN (1-0) em…
New HCN, HNC, and HCO+ measurements of 46 normal galaxies in transitions up to J=4-3 are included in a multitransition database covering HCN and HCO+ (130 galaxies) and HNC (94 galaxies). The near-linear luminosity relations are dominated by distance effects and do not reflect galaxy physical properties. Individual galaxies show significant dispersion in both their luminosity and line ratio. Line ratios do not correlate well with either luminosities or other line ratios. Only the normalized J-transition ladders of HCN and HCO+ and the J=1-0 12CO/13CO isotopologue ratio are positively correlate…
Information on globular clusters (GC) formation mechanisms can be gathered by studying the chemical signature of the multiple populations that compose these stellar systems. In particular, we are investigating the anticorrelations among O, Na, Al, and Mg to explore the influence of cluster mass and environment on GCs in the Milky Way and in extragalactic systems. We present here the results obtained on NGC 6139 which, on the basis of its horizontal branch morphology, had been proposed to be dominated by first-generation stars. In our extensive study based on high resolution spectroscopy, the f…
We present spatially resolved ($\sim$50 pc) imaging of molecular gas species in the central kiloparsec of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253, based on observations taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). A total of 50 molecular lines are detected over a 13 GHz bandwidth imaged in the 3 mm band. Unambiguous identifications are assigned for 27 lines. Based on the measured high CO/C$^{17}$O isotopic line ratio ($\gtrsim$350), we show that $^{12}$CO(1-0) has moderate optical depths. A comparison of the HCN and HCO$^{+}$ with their $^{13}$C-substituted isotopologues sho…
We report ALMA observations of CO(3-2) emission in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 1566, at a spatial resolution of 25 pc. Our aim is to investigate the morphology and dynamics of the gas inside the central kpc, and to probe nuclear fueling and feedback phenomena. NGC 1566 has a nuclear bar of 1.7 kpc radius and a conspicuous grand design spiral starting from this radius. The ALMA field of view, of diameter 0.9 kpc, lies well inside the nuclear bar and reveals a molecular trailing spiral structure from 50 to 300~pc in size, which is contributing to fuel the nucleus, according to its negative gravity …
Minor mergers are important processes contributing significantly to how galaxies evolve across the age of the Universe. Their impact on supermassive black hole growth and star formation is profound. The detailed study of dense molecular gas in galaxies provides an important test of the validity of the relation between star formation rate and HCN luminosity on different galactic scales. We use observations of HCN, HCO+1-0 and CO3-2 to study the dense gas properties in the Medusa merger. We calculate the brightness temperature ratios and use them in conjunction with a non-LTE radiative line tran…
We study the relationship between dense gas and star formation in the Antennae galaxies by comparing ALMA observations of dense gas tracers (HCN, HCO$^+$, and HNC $\mathrm{J}=1-0$) to the total infrared luminosity ($\mathrm{L_{TIR}}$) calculated using data from the \textit{Herschel} Space Observatory and the \textit{Spitzer} Space Telescope. We compare the luminosities of our SFR and gas tracers using aperture photometry and employing two methods for defining apertures. We taper the ALMA dataset to match the resolution of our $\mathrm{L_{TIR}}$ maps and present new detections of dense gas emis…
The lines of HOC$^+$, HCO and CO$^+$ are considered good tracers of photon-dominated regions (PDRs) and X-ray dominated regions. We study these tracers towards regions of the Sgr B2 cloud selected to be affected by different heating mechanisms. We find the lowest values of the column density ratios of HCO$^+$ versus HOC$^+$, HCO and CO$^+$ in dense HII gas, where UV photons dominate the heating and chemistry of gas. HOC$^+$, HCO and CO$^+$ abundances and the above ratios are compared with those of chemical modeling, finding that high temperature chemistry, a cosmic-ray ionization rate of 10$^{…
The nearby Sy 1 galaxy NGC 1097 represents an ideal laboratory to explore the molecular chemistry in the presence and surroundings of an active galactic nucleus. Exploring the distribution of different molecular species allows us to understand the physical processes affecting the ISM both in the AGN vicinity as well as in the outer star forming molecular ring. We carried out 3 mm ALMA observations of HCN, HCO+, CCH, CS, HNCO, SiO, HC3N, and SO as well as the 13C isotopologues. All species were imaged over the central 2 kpc (~30") of the galaxy at a resolution of ~2.2"x1.5 (150 pc x 100 pc). HC…
The cold molecular gas in the circumnuclear disk (CND) of radio galaxies provides critical information for understanding the mass accretion onto active galactic nuclei. We present the first detection and maps of HCN J=1-0 and HCO+ J=1-0 emission lines from the circumnuclear region of a nearby radio galaxy, NGC 4261, using the Northern Extended Millimeter Array. Both molecular lines are detected at a radial velocity of +-700 km/s relative to the systemic velocity of the galaxy, and they arise from a CND with an outer radius of 100 pc. The velocity fields of HCN and HCO+ are fitted with a Kepler…
Snowlines are key ingredients for planet formation. Providing observational constraints on the locations of the major snowlines is therefore crucial for fully connecting planet compositions to their formation mechanism. Unfortunately, the most important snowline, that of water, is very difficult to observe directly in protoplanetary disks due to its close proximity to the central star. Based on chemical considerations, HCO$^+$ is predicted to be a good chemical tracer of the water snowline, because it is particularly abundant in dense clouds when water is frozen out. This work maps the optical…
We present the results of ALMA Cycle 2 observations of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy, IRAS 20551-4250, at HCN/HCO+/HNC J=3-2 lines at both vibrational-ground (v=0) and vibrationally excited (v2=1) levels. This galaxy contains a luminous buried active galactic nucleus (AGN), in addition to starburst activity, and our ALMA Cycle 0 data revealed a tentatively detected vibrationally excited HCN v2=1f J=4-3 emission line. In our ALMA Cycle 2 data, the HCN/HCO+/HNC J=3-2 emission lines at v=0 are clearly detected. The HCN and HNC v2=1f J=3-2 emission lines are also detected, but the HCO+ v2=1f J…
We present ALMA ~0.02"-resolution observations of the nucleus of the nearby (~14 Mpc) type-2 AGN NGC 1068 at HCN/HCO+/HNC J=3-2 lines, as well as at their 13C isotopologue and vibrationally excited lines, to scrutinize the morphological/dynamical/chemical/physical properties of dense molecular gas in the putative dusty molecular torus around a mass-accreting supermassive black hole. We confirm almost east-west-oriented dense molecular gas emission both morphologically and dynamically, which we regard as coming from the torus. Bright emission is compact (<3 pc), and low-surface-brightness emiss…
Aims. We investigate the physical and chemical conditions of molecular gas in the circumnuclear disk (CND) region of NGC 1068. Methods. We carried out a spectral line survey with the IRAM 30m telescope toward the center of NGC 1068 and mainly focused on the 2 mm band with a frequency coverage of 160.7-168.6 GHz and 176.5-184.3 GHz. Results. Fifteen lines are detected in NGC 1068, eight of which are new detections for this galaxy. We derive the rotation temperatures and column densities of fourteen molecular species. Conclusions. Based on the [HCO+ (2 - 1)]/[HOC+ (2 - 1)] ratio, we obtain a hig…
Spectral line survey observations are conducted toward the high-mass protostar candidate NGC 2264 CMM3 in the 4 mm, 3 mm, and 0.8 mm bands with the Nobeyama 45 m telescope and the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) 10 m telescope. In total, 265 emission lines are detected in the 4 mm and 3 mm bands, and 74 emission lines in the 0.8 mm band. As a result, 36 molecular species and 30 isotopologues are identified. In addition to the fundamental molecular species, many emission lines of carbon-chain molecules such as HC5N, C4H, CCS, and C3S are detected in the 4 mm and 3 mm bands. De…
CO observations of the interacting galaxies IC 2163 and NGC 2207 are combined with HI, Halpha and 24 microns to study the star formation rate (SFR) surface density as a function of the gas surface density. More than half of the high SFR regions are HI dominated. When compared to other galaxies, these HI-dominated regions have excess SFRs relative to their molecular gas surface densities but normal SFRs relative to their total gas surface densities. The HI-dominated regions are mostly located in the outer part of NGC 2207, where the HI velocity dispersion is high, 40 - 50 km/s. We suggest that …
We report on Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of CO(3-2) emission in the Seyfert2/starburst galaxy NGC1808, at a spatial resolution of 4pc. Our aim is to investigate the morphology and dynamics of the gas inside the central 0.5kpc and to probe the nuclear feeding and feedback phenomena. We discovered a nuclear spiral of radius 1"=45pc. Within it, we found a decoupled circumnuclear disk or molecular torus of a radius of 0.13"=6pc. The HCN(4-3) and HCO$\rm^+$(4-3) and CS(7-6) dense gas line tracers were simultaneously mapped and detected in the nuclear spiral and they present t…
Stars form out of the densest parts of molecular clouds. Far-IR emission can be used to estimate the Star Formation Rate (SFR) and high dipole moment molecules, typically HCN, trace the dense gas. A strong correlation exists between HCN and Far-IR emission, with the ratio being nearly constant, over a large range of physical scales. A few recent observations have found HCN to be weak with respect to the Far-IR and CO in subsolar metallicity (low-Z) objects. We present observations of the Local Group galaxies M33, IC10, and NGC6822 with the IRAM 30meter and NRO 45m telescopes, greatly improving…
Molecular line ratios, such as HCN(1-0)/HCO$^+$(1-0) and HCN(4-3)/CS(7-6), are routinely used to identify active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity in galaxies. Such ratios are, however, hard to interpret as they are highly dependent on the physics and energetics of the gas, and hence can seldom be used as a unique, unambiguous diagnostic. We used the composite galaxy NGC 1068 as a `laboratory' to investigate whether molecular line ratios between HCN, HCO$^+$, and CS are useful tracers of AGN-dominated gas and determine the origin of the differences in such ratios across different types of gas. Su…

We present ALMA Band 6 observations of the CO(2-1), HCN(3-2), and HCO$^{+}$(3-2) lines in the nearby radio galaxy / brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) of NGC 1275 with the spatial resolution of $\sim20$ pc. In the previous observations, CO(2-1) emission was detected as radial filaments lying in the east-west direction. We resolved the inner filament and found that the filament cannot be represented by a simple infalling stream both morphologically and kinematically. The observed complex nature of the filament resembles the cold gas structure predicted by recent numerical simulations of cold chaoti…

Mon R2, at a distance of 830 pc, is the only ultracompact HII region (UC HII) where the photon-dominated region (PDR) between the ionized gas and the molecular cloud can be resolved with Herschel. HIFI observations of the abundant compounds 13CO, C18O, o-H2-18O, HCO+, CS, CH, and NH have been used to derive the physical and chemical conditions in the PDR, in particular the water abundance. The 13CO, C18O, o-H2-18O, HCO+ and CS observations are well described assuming that the emission is coming from a dense (n=5E6 cm-3, N(H2)>1E22 cm-2) layer of molecular gas around the UC HII. Based on our o-…
We investigate the fueling and the feedback of star formation and nuclear activity in NGC1068, a nearby (D=14Mpc) Seyfert 2 barred galaxy, by analyzing the distribution and kinematics of the molecular gas in the disk. We have used ALMA to map the emission of a set of dense molecular gas tracers (CO(3-2), CO(6-5), HCN(4-3), HCO+(4-3) and CS(7-6)) and their underlying continuum emission in the central r ~ 2kpc of NGC1068 with spatial resolutions ~ 0.3"-0.5" (~ 20-35pc). Molecular line and dust continuum emissions are detected from a r ~ 200pc off-centered circumnuclear disk (CND), from the 2.6kp…
An important open question is the relation between intracluster light and the halos of central galaxies in galaxy clusters. Here we report results from an on going project with the aim to characterize the dynamical state in the core of the Hydra I (Abell 1060) cluster around NGC 3311. Methods: We analyze deep long-slit absorption line spectra reaching out to ~25 kpc in the halo of NGC 3311. Results: We find a very steep increase in the velocity dispersion profile from a central sigma_0=150 km/s to sigma_out ~450 km/s at R ~ 12 kpc. Farther out, to ~25 kpc, sigma appears to be constant at this …
In external galaxies, molecular composition may be influenced by extreme environments such as starbursts and galaxy mergers. To study such molecular chemistry, we observed the luminous-infrared galaxy and merger NGC 3256 using the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array. We covered most of the 3-mm and 1.3-mm bands for a multi-species, multi-transition analysis. We first analyzed intensity ratio maps of selected lines such as HCN/HCO$^+$, which shows no enhancement at an AGN. We then compared the chemical compositions within NGC 3256 at the two nuclei, tidal arms, and positions with infl…
We investigate the far infrared spectrum of NGC 1266, a S0 galaxy that contains a massive reservoir of highly excited molecular gas. Using the SPIRE-FTS, we detect the $^{12}$CO ladder up to J=(13-12), [C I] and [N II] lines, and also strong water lines more characteristic of UltraLuminous IR Galaxies (ULIRGs). The 12CO line emission is modeled with a combination of a low-velocity C-shock and a PDR. Shocks are required to produce the H2O and most of the high-J 12CO emission. Despite having an infrared luminosity thirty times less than a typical ULIRG, the spectral characteristics and physical …
We analyse the influence of the dynamical environment on the star formation (SF) relations of the dense molecular gas in the starburst (SB) ring of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068. We used ALMA to image the emission of the 1-0 transitions of HCN and HCO+ with a resolution of 56 pc. We also used ancillary data of CO(1-0) at a resolution of ~100 pc, and CO(3-2) and its underlying continuum emission at ~40 pc. These observations allow us to probe a range of molecular gas densities (n(H2)~10$^{3-5}cm^{-3}$). The SF rate (SFR) is derived from Pa$α$ line emission imaged by HST/NICMOS. We analysed how …
