We analyse the influence of the dynamical environment on the star formation (SF) relations of the dense molecular gas in the starburst (SB) ring of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068. We used ALMA to image the emission of the 1-0 transitions of HCN and HCO+ with a resolution of 56 pc. We also used ancillary data of CO(1-0) at a resolution of ~100 pc, and CO(3-2) and its underlying continuum emission at ~40 pc. These observations allow us to probe a range of molecular gas densities (n(H2)~10$^{3-5}cm^{-3}$). The SF rate (SFR) is derived from Pa$α$ line emission imaged by HST/NICMOS. We analysed how SF relations change depending on the choice of aperture sizes and molecular gas tracer. The scatter in the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation is about a factor of two to three lower for the HCN and HCO+ lines compared to CO(1-0) for a common aperture. Correlations lose statistical significance below a critical spatial scale $\approx$300-400 pc. The SF efficiency of the dense molecular gas (SFEdense) shows a scattered distribution as a function of the HCN luminosity (L'(HCN)) around a mean value of $\simeq0.01$Myr$^{-1}$. An alternative prescription for SF relations, linking the SFEdense and the boundedness of the gas measured by the parameter b$\equivΣ$dense/$σ^2$, where $Σ$dense is the dense molecular gas surface density and $σ$ the velocity dispersion, resolves the degeneracy associated with the SFEdense-L'(HCN) plot. We identify two branches in the SFEdense-b plot that correspond to two dynamical environments in the SB ring, which are defined by their proximity to the bar-ring interface region. This region corresponds to the crossing of two density wave resonances, where an increased rate of cloud-cloud collisions would favour an enhanced compression of molecular gas. Our results suggest that galactic dynamics plays a major role in the efficiency of the gas conversion into stars.
We present the results of CO(J=3-2) on-the-fly mappings of two nearby non-barred spiral galaxies NGC 628 and NGC 7793 with the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment at an effective angular resolution of 25". We successfully obtained global distributions of CO(J=3-2) emission over the entire disks at a sub-kpc resolution for both galaxies. We examined the spatially-resolved (sub-kpc) relationship between CO(J=3-2) luminosities (L'CO(3-2)) and infrared (IR) luminosities (LIR) for NGC 628, NGC 7793, and M 83, and compared it with global luminosities of JCMT Nearby Galaxy Legacy Survey sample…
This paper presents the spatially resolved star formation history (2D-SFH) of a small sample of four local mergers: the early-stage mergers IC1623, NGC6090, and the Mice, and the more advanced merger NGC2623, by analyzing IFS data from the CALIFA survey and PMAS in LArr mode. Full spectral fitting techniques are applied to the datacubes to obtain the spatially resolved mass growth histories, the time evolution of the star formation rate intensity ($Σ_{SFR}$), and the local specific star formation rate, over three different timescales (30 Myr, 300 Myr, and 1 Gyr). The results are compared with …
Using multi-band photometric images of M 51 and its companion NGC 5195 from ultraviolet to optical and infrared, we investigate spatially resolved stellar population properties of this interacting system with stellar population synthesis models. The observed IRX is used to constrain dust extinction. Stellar mass is also inferred from the model fitting. By fitting observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with synthetical ones, we derive two-dimensional distributions of stellar age, metallicity, dust extinction, and stellar mass. In M 51, two grand-designed spiral arms extending from the bu…
We study the resolved radio-continuum spectral energy distribution of the dwarf irregular galaxy, NGC 1569, on a beam-by-beam basis to isolate and study its spatially resolved radio emission characteristics. Utilizing high quality NRAO Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations that densely sample the 1--34\,GHz frequency range, we adopt a Bayesian fitting procedure, where we use H$α$ emission that has not been corrected for extinction as a prior, to produce maps of how the separated thermal emission, non-thermal emission and non-thermal spectral index vary across NGC\,1569's main disk…
The Survey of Water and Ammonia in Nearby galaxies (SWAN) studies atomic and molecular species across the nuclei of four star forming galaxies: NGC\,253, IC\,342, NGC\,6946, and NGC\,2146. As part of this survey, we present Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) molecular line observations of three galaxies: IC\,342, NGC\,6946 and NGC\,2146. NGC\,253 is covered in a previous paper. These galaxies were chosen to span an order of magnitude in star formation rates and to select a variety of galaxy types. We target the metastable transitions of ammonia NH$_{3}$(1,1) to (5,5), the 22\,GHz water (H$_…
The formation of nuclear star clusters (NSCs) remains an open question. In this work, we use spatially resolved HST/STIS spectroscopic observations of three nearby NSCs (hosted by NGC 5102, NGC 5206, and NGC 205) to constrain their formation histories by exploring radial variations of the stellar populations within each cluster. Utilizing full-spectrum fitting, we find substantial age and metallicity gradients within the central 0."9 (16~pc) of the NSC in NGC 5102 where populations near the center are young/metal-rich (age ~400~Myr and [M/H] ~-0.4) and become older/metal-poor at larger radii (…
Despite decreasing cosmic star formation rate density over the last 10 Gyr, the stellar mass ($M_{*}$) buildups in galaxies were still progressing during this epoch. About 50\% of the current $M_{*}$ density in the universe was built over the last $\sim 8.7$ Gyr. In this research, we investigated the stellar mass buildup and quenching of spatially resolved regions within massive disk galaxies over the last 10 Gyr. We apply the spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting method to SEDs of sub-galactic regions in galaxies to derive the spatially resolved distributions of SFR and $M_{*}$ in the ga…
NGC 2617 has attracted a lot of attention after the detection of the changes in spectral type, and its geometry and kinematics of broad-line region (BLR) are still ambiguous. In this paper, we present the high cadence ($\sim$ 2 days) reverberation mapping campaign of NGC 2617 from 2019 October to 2020 May undertaken at Lijiang 2.4 m telescope. For the first time, the velocity-resolved reverberation signature of the object was successfully detected. Both H$α$ and H$β$ show an asymmetrical profile with a peak in the velocity-resolved time lags. For each of both lines, the lag of the line core is…
We demonstrate a new method for measuring the escape fraction of ionizing photons using Hubble Space Telescope imaging of resolved stars in NGC 4214, a local analog of high-redshift starburst galaxies that are thought to be responsible for cosmic reionization. Specifically, we forward model the UV through near-IR spectral energy distributions of $\sim$83,000 resolved stars to infer their individual ionizing flux outputs. We constrain the local escape fraction by comparing the number of ionizing photons produced by stars to the number that are either absorbed by dust or consumed by ionizing the…
Optical integral-field spectroscopy was used to investigate the planetary nebula NGC 3242. We analysed the main morphological components of this source, including its knots, but not the halo. In addition to revealing the properties ofthe physical and chemical nature of this nebula, we also provided reliable spatially resolved constraints that can be used for future photoionisation modelling of the nebula. The latter is ultimately necessary to obtain a fully self-consistent 3D picture of the physical and chemical properties of the object. The observations were obtained with the VIMOS instrument…

To trace chemical evolution in a prototypical starburst environment, we spatially resolve the carbon and oxygen isotope ratios across the central molecular zone (full size ~$\sim 600$ pc) in the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253. We imaged the emission of the optically thin isotopologues $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O, C$^{17}$O, $^{13}$C$^{18}$O at a spatial resolution $\sim50$ pc, comparable to the typical size of giant molecular associations. Optical depth effects and contamination of $^{13}$C$^{18}$O by C$_4$H is discussed and accounted for to derive column densities. This is the first extragalactic d…
We present a spatially resolved stellar population study of the inner $\sim$200\,pc radius of NGC4303 based on near-infrared integral field spectroscopy with SINFONI/VLT at a spatial resolution of 40-80pc and using the STARLIGHT code. We found the distribution of the stellar populations presents a spatial variation, suggesting an age stratification. Three main structures stand out. Two nuclear blobs, one composed by young stars (t $\leq$ 50Myr) and one with intermediate-age stars (50Myr $<$ t $\leq$ 2Gyr) both shifted from the centre. The third one is an internal intermediate-age spiral arm-li…
We present the results of Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) 108, 233, 352, and 691 GHz continuum observations and Very Large Array (VLA) 4.81 and 8.36 GHz observations of the nearby luminous merger remnant NGC 1614. By analyzing the beam (1".0 * 1".0) and uv (> 45 kλ) matched ALMA and VLA maps, we find that the deconvolved source size of lower frequency emission (< 108 GHz) is more compact (420 pc * 380 pc) compared to the higher frequency emission (> 233 GHz) (560 pc * 390 pc), suggesting different physical origins for the continuum emission. Based on an SED model for a dust…
We present the first VLBI detection of HCN molecular absorption in the nearby active galactic nucleus NGC 1052. Utilizing the 1 milliarcsecond resolution achieved by the Korean VLBI Network, we have spatially resolved the HCN absorption against a double-sided nuclear jet structure. Two velocity features of HCN absorption are detected significantly at the radial velocity of 1656 and 1719 km/s, redshifted by 149 and 212 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity of the galaxy. The column density of the HCN molecule is estimated to be 10^{15}-10^{16} cm^{-2}, assuming the excitation temperature o…
We present a detailed study of the Magellanic irregular galaxy NGC 4449 based on both archival and new photometric data from the Legacy Extragalactic UV Survey, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide Field Camera 3. Thanks to its proximity ($D=3.82\pm 0.27$ Mpc) we reach stars 3 magnitudes fainter than the tip of the red giant branch in the F814W filter. The recovered star formation history spans the whole Hubble time, but due to the age-metallicity degeneracy of the red giant branch stars, it is robust only over the lookback time reached by our photometr…
Aims. Interacting galaxies show unique irregularities in their kinematic structure. By investigating the spatially resolved kinematics and stellar population properties of galaxies that show irregularities, we can paint a detailed picture of the formation and evolutionary processes that took place during its lifetimes. Methods. In this work, we focus on galaxies with a specific kinematic irregularity, a kinematically distinct stellar core (KDC), in particular, counter-rotating galaxies where the core and main body of the galaxy are rotating in opposite directions. We visually identify eleven M…
We have modeled the full velocity-resolved reverberation response of the H$β$ and He II optical broad emission lines in NGC 3783 to constrain the geometry and kinematics of the low-ionization and high-ionization broad line region. The geometry is found to be a thick disk that is nearly face on, inclined at $\sim 18^{\circ}$ to our line of sight, and exhibiting clear ionization stratification, with an extended H$β$-emitting region ($r_{\rm median}=10.07^{+1.10}_{-1.12}$ light days) and a more compact and centrally-located He II-emitting region ($r_{\rm median}=1.33^{+0.34}_{-0.42}$ light days).…
We present the first evidence of multiple populations in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6362. We used optical and near-UV Hubble Space Telescope and ground based photometry, finding that both the sub giant and red giant branches are split in two parallel sequences in all color magnitude diagrams where the F336W filter (or U band) is used. This cluster is one of the least massive globulars (M_tot~5x10^4 M_sun) where multiple populations have been detected so far. Even more interestingly and at odds with any previous finding, we observe that the two identified populations share the same radia…
The Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7469 possesses a prominent nuclear starburst ring and a luminous active galactic nucleus (AGN). Evidence of an outflow in the innermost nuclear region has been found in previous works. We detect the ionized gas outflow on a larger scale in the galaxy using the archival VLT/MUSE and {\em Chandra} observations. The optical emission lines are modeled using two Gaussian components, and a non-parametric approach is applied to measure the kinematics of [O III] and $\rm Hα$ emitting gas. Line ratio diagnostics and spatially resolved maps are derived to examine the origin of t…
We investigate a relation between surface densities of star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass ($M_{*}$) at a $\sim 1$ kpc scale namely spatially resolved star formation main sequence (SFMS) in massive ($\log(M_{*}/M_{\odot})>10.5$) face-on disc galaxies at $0.01<z<0.02$ and $0.8<z<1.8$ and examine evolution of the relation. The spatially resolved SFMS of $z\sim 0$ galaxies is discussed in a companion paper. For $z\sim 1$ sample, we use 8 bands imaging dataset from CANDELS and 3D-HST and perform a pixel-to-pixel SED fitting to derive the spatially resolved SFR and $M_{*}$. We find a linear …
We map optical and near-infrared (NIR) stellar population properties of the inner 320$\times$535pc$^2$ of the elliptical galaxy NGC1052. The optical and NIR spectra were obtained using the Gemini Integral Field Units of the GMOS instrument and NIFS, respectively. By performing stellar population synthesis in the optical alone, we find that this region of the galaxy is dominated by old (t$>$10Gyr) stellar populations. Using the NIR, we find the nucleus to be dominated by old stellar populations, and a circumnuclear ring with younger ($\sim$2.5Gyr) stars. We also combined the optical and NIR dat…
An analysis of the kinematics of NGC 6720 is performed on the commissioning data obtained with SITELLE, the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope's new imaging Fourier transform spectrometer. In order to measure carefully the small broadening effect of a shell expansion on an unresolved emission line, we have determined a computationally robust implementation of the convolution of a Gaussian with a sinc instrumental line shape which avoids arithmetic overflows. This model can be used to measure line broadening of typically a few km/s even at low spectral resolution (R less than 5000). We have also de…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of 12CO(1-0) and 12CO(2-1) in the central 40" (680 pc) of the nuclear starburst galaxy NGC 253, including its molecular outflow. We measure the ratio of brightness temperature for CO(2-1)/CO(1-0), r_21, in the central starburst and outflow-related features. We discuss how r_21 can be used to constrain the optical depth of the CO emission, which impacts the inferred mass of the outflow and consequently the molecular mass outflow rate. We find r_21 less than or equal to 1 throughout, consistent with a majority of the CO …
A number of planetary nebulae show binary central stars and significant abundance discrepancies between values estimated from colisionally excited lines when compared to the same abundances estimated from recombination lines. One approach to investigate this yet unsolved problem is using spatially resolved images of emission lines in an attempt to detect a possibly distinct metal rich component in the nebula. In this work we present results of spatially resolved bundance analysis of NGC 6778 based on data gathered from VLT VIMOS-IFU. We discuss the spatial variations found as well as possible …
We map the optical and near-infrared (NIR) emission-line flux distributions and kinematics of the inner 320$\times$535pc$^2$ of the elliptical galaxy NGC1052. The integral field spectra were obtained with the Gemini Telescope using the GMOS-IFU and NIFS instruments, with angular resolutions of 0''88 and 0''1 in the optical and NIR, respectively. We detect five kinematic components: (1 and 2) Two spatially unresolved components, being a broad line region visible in H$α$, with a FWHM of $\sim$3200km s$^{-1}$ and an intermediate-broad component seen in the [OIII]$λλ$4959,5007 doublet; (3) an exte…
Extremely metal-poor, high-ionizing starbursts in the local Universe provide unique laboratories for exploring in detail the physics of high-redshift systems. Also, their ongoing star-formation and haphazard morphology make them outstanding proxies for primordial galaxies. Using integral field spectroscopy, we spatially resolved the ISM properties and massive stars of two first-class low metallicity galaxies with Wolf-Rayet features and nebular HeII emission: Mrk178 and IZw18. In this review, we summarize our main results for these two objects.
The galaxy NGC1313 has attracted the attention of various studies due to the peculiar morphology observed in optical bands, although it is classified as a barred, late-type galaxy with no apparent close-by companions. However, the velocity field suggests an interaction with a satellite companion. Using resolved stellar populations, we study different parts of the galaxy to understand further its morphology. Based on HST/ACS images, we estimated star formation histories by means of the synthetic CMD method in different areas in the galaxy. Incompleteness limits our analysis to ages younger than…
We report on a detailed study of the stellar populations and ionized gas properties in the merger LIRG NGC 2623, analysing optical Integral Field Spectroscopy from the CALIFA survey and PMAS LArr, multiwavelength HST imaging, and OSIRIS narrow band H$α$ and [NII]$λ$6584 imaging. The spectra were processed with the STARLIGHT full spectral fitting code, and the results compared with those for two early-stage merger LIRGs (IC 1623 W and NGC 6090), together with CALIFA Sbc/Sc galaxies. We find that NGC 2623 went through two periods of increased star formation (SF), a first and widespread episode, …
We report spatially-resolved [CII]$λ158$ $μ$m observations of HE 0433-1028, which is the first detection of a nearby luminous AGN (redshift 0.0355) with FIFI-LS onboard the airborne observatory SOFIA. We compare the spatially-resolved star formation tracers [CII], as provided by our SOFIA observations, and H$α$ from MUSE optical integral-field spectroscopy. We find that the [CII] emission is mainly matching the extended star formation as traced by the extinction-corrected H$α$ line emission but some additional flux is present. While a larger sample is needed to statistically confirm our findin…
The [CII] fine-structure transition at 158 micron is frequently the brightest far-infrared line in galaxies. Due to its low ionization potential, C+ can trace the ionized, atomic, and molecular phases of the ISM. We present velocity resolved [CII] and [NII] pointed observations from SOFIA/GREAT on ~500 pc scales in the nearby galaxies M101 and NGC 6946 and investigate the multi-phase origin of [CII] emission over a range of environments. We show that ionized gas makes a negligible contribution to the [CII] emission in these positions using [NII] observations. We spectrally decompose the [CII] …
We present and analyze spatially-resolved maps for the observed $V$- and $g$-band to 3.6$μ$m flux ratios and the inferred dust extinction values, $A_V$, for a sample of 257 nearby NGC and IC galaxies. Flux ratio maps are constructed using PSF-matched mosaics of SDSS $g$- and $r$-band images and Spitzer/IRAC 3.6$μ$m mosaics, with all pixels contaminated by foreground stars or background objects masked out. By applying the $β_V$ method (Tamura et al. 2009, 2010), which was recently calibrated as a function of redshift and morphological type by Kim, Jansen, & Windhorst (2017), dust extinction map…
We present MUSE Integral Field Unit (IFU) observations of five individual HII regions in two giant (>100 pc in radius) star-forming complexes in the low-metallicity ($Z$~0.33 $Z_{\odot}$) nearby (D ~ 2 Mpc) dwarf spiral galaxy NGC 300. We combine the IFU data with high spatial resolution HST photometry to demonstrate the extraction of stellar spectra and the classification of individual stars from ground-based data at the distance of 2 Mpc. For the two star-forming complexes, in which no O-type stars had previously been identified, we find a total of 13 newly identified O-type stars in the mas…
Stationary Density Wave Theory predicts the existence of an age gradient across the spiral arms with a phase crossing at the co-rotation radius. Using star formation history (SFH) maps of 12 nearby spiral galaxies derived from \textsc{LIGHTNING} \citep{Eufracio:2017}, a spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting procedure, and by using \textsc{Spirality} \citep{Shield:2015} a \textsc{MATLAB}-based code which plots synthetic spiral arms over \textsc{FITS} images, we have found a gradual decrement in pitch angles with increasing age, thus providing us with evidence in favour of the Stationary De…
Projected in the sky, galaxies are spatially-resolved objects. To understand how they formed and evolve it is necessary to study the spatial distribution of their observables. In this review talk, we briefly describe some scaling relations used to understand the physical processes that drive galaxy evolution, in particular for disk-like star-forming galaxies. First, we explore the relations derived using integrated galactic properties, then we introduce the scaling relations at kpc scales derived using the technique called Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) for large samples of galaxies in the …
We present a time, spectral and imaging analysis of the X-ray reflector in NGC 4945, which reveals its geometrical and physical structure with unprecedented detail. NGC 4945 hosts one of the brightest AGN in the sky above 10 keV, but it is only visible through its reflected/scattered emission below 10 keV, due to absorption by a column density of ~4\times10^24 cm-2. A new Suzaku campaign of 5 observations spanning ~6 months, together with past XMM-Newton and Chandra observations, show a remarkable constancy (within <10%) of the reflected component. Instead, Swift-BAT reveals strong intrinsic v…
Changing-look active galactic nucleus NGC~4151, which has attracted a lot of attention, is undergoing the second dramatic outburst stage in its evolutionary history. To investigate the geometry and kinematics of the broad-line region (BLR), and measure the mass of supermassive black hole in NGC~4151, we perform a seven-month photometric and spectroscopic monitoring program in 2020--2021, using the 2.4 m telescope at Lijiang Observatory. We successfully measure the time lags of the responses from broad \ha, \hb, \hg, \hei, and \heii\ emission lines to continuum variation, which are $7.63_{-2.62…
We present Karl G Jansky Very Large Array molecular line observations of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253, from SWAN: "Survey of Water and Ammonia in Nearby galaxies". SWAN is a molecular line survey at centimeter wavelengths designed to reveal the physical conditions of star forming gas over a range of star forming galaxies. NGC 253 has been observed in four 1GHz bands from 21 to 36 GHz at 6" ($\sim100$pc) spatial and 3.5 km s$^{-1}$ spectral resolution. In total we detect 19 transitions from seven molecular and atomic species. We have targeted the metastable inversion transitions of ammon…
The scatter of the spatially resolved star formation main sequence (SFMS) is investigated in order to reveal signatures about the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. We have assembled a sample of 355 nearby galaxies with spatially resolved Hα and mid-infrared fluxes from the Survey for Ionized Neutral Gas in Galaxies and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, respectively. We examine the impact of various star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass transformations on the SFMS. Ranging from 10^6 to 10^11.5 M_sun and derived from color to mass-to-light ratio methods for mid-infrared ba…
We present an 8 pc x 5 pc resolution view of the central ~ 200 pc region of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253, based on ALMA Band 7 (λ ~ 0.85 mm or ν ~ 350 GHz) observations covering 11 GHz. We resolve the nuclear starburst of NGC 253 into eight dusty star-forming clumps, 10 pc in scale, for the first time. These clumps, each of which contains (4-10) x 10^4 M_sun of dust (assuming that the dust temperature is 25 K) and up to 6 x 10^2 massive (O5V) stars, appear to be aligned in two parallel ridges, while they have been blended in previous studies. Despite the similarities in sizes and dust m…
We present spatially resolved BPT mapping of the extended narrow line regions (ENLRs) of seven nearby Seyfert 2 galaxies, using HST narrow band filter imaging. We construct the BPT diagrams using $\leq$ 0.1" resolution emission line images of [O III]$λ$5007, H$α$, [S II]$λ$$λ$6717,6731, and H$β$. By mapping these diagnostic lines according to the BPT classification, we dissect the ENLR into Seyfert, LINER, and star-forming regions. The nucleus and ionization cones are dominated by Seyfert-type emission, which can be interpreted as predominantly photoionization by the active galactic nucleus (A…
Star formation histories (SFHs) are integral to our understanding of galaxy evolution. We can study recent SFHs by comparing the star formation rate (SFR) calculated using different tracers, as each probes a different timescale. We aim to calibrate a proxy for the present-day rate of change in SFR, dSFR/dt, which does not require full spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling and depends on as few observables as possible, to guarantee its broad applicability. To achieve this, we create a set of models in CIGALE and define an SFR change diagnostic as the ratio of the SFR averaged over the pas…
Spatially resolved near-IR and X-ray imaging of the central region of the Luminous Infrared Galaxy NGC 5135 is presented. The kinematical signatures of strong outflows are detected in the [FeII]1.64 μm emission line in a compact region at 0.9 kpc from the nucleus. The derived mechanical energy release is consistent with a supernova rate of 0.05-0.1 yr$^{-1}$. The apex of the outflowing gas spatially coincides with the strongest [FeII] emission peak and with the dominant component of the extranuclear hard X-ray emission. All these features provide evidence for a plausible direct physical link b…
As an introduction of a kinematic survey of Magellanic Cloud (MC) star clusters, we report on the dynamical masses and mass-to-light ($M/L$) ratios of NGC 419 (SMC) and NGC 1846 (LMC). We have obtained more than one hundred high-resolution stellar spectra in and around each cluster using the multi-object spectrograph M2FS on the $Magellan$/Clay Telescope. Line-of-sight velocities and positions of the stars observed in each cluster were used as input to an expectation-maximization algorithm used to estimate cluster membership probabilities, resulting in samples of 46 and 52 likely members ($P_{…
Over the course of two flights, the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (BLAST) made resolved maps of seven nearby (<25 Mpc) galaxies at 250, 350, and 500 microns. During its June 2005 flight from Sweden, BLAST observed a single nearby galaxy, NGC 4565. During the December 2006 flight from Antarctica, BLAST observed the nearby galaxies NGC 1097, NGC 1291, NGC 1365, NGC 1512, NGC 1566, and NGC 1808. We fit physical dust models to a combination of BLAST observations and other available data for the galaxies observed by Spitzer. We fit a modified blackbody to the remaining galaxi…
CONTEXT. Stellar populations are the building blocks of galaxies including the Milky Way. The majority, if not all extragalactic studies are entangled with the use of stellar population models given the unresolved nature of their observation. Extragalactic systems contain multiple stellar populations with complex star formation histories. However, their study is mainly based upon the principles of simple stellar populations (SSP). Hence, it is critical to examine the validity of SSP models. AIMS. This work aims to empirically test the validity of SSP models. This is done by comparing SSP model…
We quantify the spatial distributions of dense cores in three spatially distinct areas of the Orion B star-forming region. For L1622, NGC2068/NGC2071 and NGC2023/NGC2024 we measure the amount of spatial substructure using the $\mathcal{Q}$-parameter and find all three regions to be spatially substructured ($\mathcal{Q} < 0.8$). We quantify the amount of mass segregation using $Λ_{\rm MSR}$ and find that the most massive cores are mildly mass segregated in NGC2068/NGC2071 ($Λ_{\rm MSR} \sim 2$), and very mass segregated in NGC2023/NGC2024 ($Λ_{\rm MSR} = 28^{+13}_{-10}$ for the four most massiv…
