With more inverter-based resources (IBRs), our power systems have lower frequency nadirs following N-1 contingencies, and undesired under-frequency load shedding (UFLS) can occur. To address this challenge, IBRs can be programmed to provide at least three types of fast frequency response (FFR), e.g., step response, proportional response (P/f droop response), and derivative response (synthetic inertia). However, these heterogeneous FFR challenge the study of power system frequency dynamics. Thus, this paper develops an analytical frequency nadir prediction method that allows for the consideration of all three potential forms of FFR provided by IBRs. The proposed method provides fast and accurate frequency nadir estimation after N-1 generation tripping contingencies. Our method is grounded on the closed-form solution for the frequency nadir, which is solved from the second-order system frequency response model considering the governor dynamics and three types of FFR. The simulation results in the IEEE 39-bus system with different types of FFR demonstrate that the proposed method provides an accurate and fast prediction of the frequency nadir under various disturbances.
Quantifying the impact of inverter-based distributed generation (DG) sources on power-flow distribution system cases is arduous. Existing distribution system tools predominately model distributed generation sources as either negative PQ loads or as a PV generator and then employed a PV-PQ switching algorithm to mimic Volt/VAR support. These models neglect the unique characteristics of inverter-based distributed generation sources, have scalability and convergence issues, and are ill-suited for increasing solar penetration scenarios. This work proposes an inverter-based DG model accounting for …
It is speculated that higher penetration of inverter-based distributed photo-voltaic (PV) power generators can increase the risk of tripping events due to voltage fluctuations. To quantify this risk utilities need to solve the interactive equations of tripping events for networked PVs in real-time. However, these equations are non-differentiable, nonlinear, and exponentially complex, and thus, cannot be used as a tractable basis for solar curtailment prediction and mitigation. Furthermore, load/PV power values might not be available in real-time due to limited grid observability, which further…
Due to the rise of distributed energy resources, the control of networks of grid-forming inverters is now a pressing issue for power system operation. Droop control is a popular control strategy in the literature for frequency control of these inverters. In this paper, we analyze transient stability in droop-controlled inverter networks that are subject to multiple operating constraints. Using a physically-meaningful Lyapunov-like function, we provide two sets of criteria (one mathematical and one computational) to certify that a post-fault trajectory achieves frequency synchronization while r…
The paper presents a straightforward modelling approach to compute the power loss distribution in GaN HEMT based three phase and three level (3L) active neutral point clamped (ANPC) inverters, for different pulse width modulated techniques. Conduction and switching losses averaged over each PWM switching period are analytically computed by starting from the operating conditions of the AC load and data of GaN power devices. The accuracy of the proposed analytical approach is evaluated through a circuit based power electronics simulation tool, applied to different carrier-based PWM strategies.
This paper proposes a new concept called virtual inertia scheduling (VIS) to efficiently handle the high penetration of inverter-based resources (IBRs). VIS is an inertia management framework that targets security-constrained and economy-oriented inertia scheduling and generation dispatch of power systems with a large scale of renewable generations. Specifically, it schedules the proper power setting points and reserved capacities of both synchronous generators and IBRs, as well as the control modes and control parameters of IBRs to provide secure and cost-effective inertia support. First, a u…

Grid-forming inverter-based autonomous microgrids present new operational challenges as the stabilizing rotational inertia of synchronous machines is absent. The design of efficient control policies for grid-forming inverters is, however, a non-trivial problem where multiple performance objectives need to be satisfied, including voltage/frequency regulation, current limiting capabilities, as well as active power sharing and a scalable operation. We propose in this paper a novel control architecture for frequency and voltage control which allows current limitation via an inner loop, active powe…
