The Stoner-Wohlfarth (SW) model is a classical model for magnetic hysteresis of single-domain particles. For two-dimensional magnets at finite temperature, the SW model must be extended to include intrinsic strong spin fluctuations. We predict several fundamentally different hysteresis properties between 2D and 3D magnets. The magnetization switching diagram known as the Asteroid figure in the conventional SW model becomes highly temperature dependent and asymmetric with respect to the transverse and longitudinal magnetic fields. Our results provide new insights for 2D magnetic materials based spintronics applications.
It is observed experimentally that the coercive field has an anomalous angular dependence at temperatures above the blocking temperature in physically nonpercolated granular films CoFeB-SiO$_{2}$ with anisotropic granules oriented in the same direction. It is shown that the anomaly is determined by the singularity of an angular dependence of the critical field causing the absolute loss of phase stability of the superferromagnetic state of an ensemble of interacting superparamagnetic granules.
We consider the influence of interparticle interaction on the magnetization reversal in the oriented Stoner-Wohlfarth nanoparticles ensemble. To do so, we solve a kinetic equation for the relaxation of the overall ensemble magnetization to its equilibrium value in some effective mean field. Latter field consists of external magnetic field and interaction mean field proportional to the instantaneous value of above magnetization. We show that the interparticle interaction influences the temperature dependence of a coercive field. This influence manifests itself in the noticeable coercivity at $T…
The combination of high sensitive superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) with high quality nanoparticles allowed to check the simplest classical model describing the magnetisation reversal by uniform rotation which were proposed more than 50 years ago by Neel, Stoner and Wohlfarth. The micrometer sized SQUIDs were elaborated by electron beam lithography and the nanoparticles were synthesised by arc-discharge. The measured angular dependence of switching fields of nearly all f.c.c. Co nanoparticles revealed a dominating uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. This result suggests that twin b…
Nanomagnetism has recently attracted explosive attention, in particular, because of the enormous potential applications in information industry, e.g. new harddisk technology, race-track memory[1], and logic devices[2]. Recent technological advances[3] allow for the fabrication of single-domain magnetic nanoparticles (Stoner particles), whose magnetization dynamics have been extensively studied, both experimentally and theoretically, involving magnetic fields[4-9] and/or by spin-polarized currents[10-20]. From an industrial point of view, important issues include lowering the critical switching…
We have studied the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the total magnetic moment of large-area permalloy artificial square spin ice arrays. The temperature dependence and hysteresis behavior are consistent with the coherent magnetization reversal expected in the Stoner-Wohlfarth model, with clear deviations due to inter-island interactions at small lattice spacing. Through micromagnetic simulations, we explore this behavior and demonstrate that the deviations result from increasingly complex magnetization reversal at small lattice spacing, induced by inter-island interactions, and de…

In a recent paper [Phys.Rev.B.\textbf{84}, 161307 (2011)], experimental data on spin splitting in the integer quantum Hall effect has been reported in a high mobility dilute 2D electron gas with electron density as low as 0.2 $\times$ 10$^{11}$ cm $^{-2}$. In this work, we show that an excellent \emph{quantitative} description of these data can be obtained within the model of the magnetic-field-induced Stoner transition in the quantum Hall regime. This provides a powerful tool to probe the non-trivial density dependance of electron-electron interactions in the dilute regime of the 2D electron …
We calculate the interaction kernel K for two-dimensional diffusive electrons. The screening of the Coulomb interaction together with the Fermi statistics induces a spin selection rule for electron-electron scattering so that in leading order in the inverse conductance only pairs of electrons with antiparallel spins do scatter. At low temperature, this results in a larger coherence length for fully polarized electrons and thus in a positive in-plane magnetoresistance. An applied in-plane magnetic field also induces a nonmonotonous behavior of K at finite temperature. Alternatively, the vanishi…
The magnetic behaviour of ultrathin ferromagnetic films deposited on substrates is strongly affected by the properties of the substrate. We investigate the spin pumping rate, interlayer exchange coupling and dynamic exchange coupling between ultrathin ferromagnetic films through palladium, a non-magnetic substrate that displays strong Stoner enhancement. We find that the interlayer exchange coupling, both in the static and dynamic versions, is qualitatively affected by the substrate's Stoner enhancement. For instance, the oscillatory behavior that is a hallmark property of the RKKY exchange co…
In this article a detailed characterization of a magnetization motion in a single sub-micrometer and multi-terminal ferromagnetic structure in lateral geometry is performed in a GHz regime using direct DC characterization technique. We have shown applicability of the Stoner-Wohlfarth model to the magnetic nano-structure with large length to with ratio. Applying the model to experimental data we are able to extract relevant magnetization motion parameters and show a correlation between high frequency inductive currents and local magnetization. Additionally, DC voltage generated over the structu…
Numerical simulations of magnetization reversal of a quantum uniaxial magnet under a swept magnetic field [Hatomura, \textit{et al}., \textit{Quantum Stoner-Wohlfarth Model}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{116}, 037203 (2016)] are extended. In particular, how the "wave packet" describing the time-evolution of the system is scattered in the successive avoided level crossings is investigated from the viewpoint of the distribution of the eigenstate populations. It is found that the peak of the distribution as a function of the magnetic field does not depend on spin-size $S$, which indicates that the de…
A new strategy is proposed aimed at substantially reducing the minimal magnetization switching field for a Stoner particle. Unlike the normal method of applying a static magnetic field which must be larger than the magnetic anisotropy, a much weaker field, proportional to the damping constant in the weak damping regime, can be used to switch the magnetization from one state to another if the field is along the motion of the magnetization. The concept is to constantly supply energy to the particle from the time-dependent magnetic field to allow the particle to climb over the potential barrier b…
We investigate magnetization reversal of two-body uniaxial Stoner particles, by injecting spin-polarized current through a spin-valve structure. The two-body Stoner particles perform synchronized dynamics and can act as an information bit in computer technology. In the presence of magnetic dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) between the two particles, the critical switching current $I_c$ for reversing the two dipoles is analytically obtained and numerically verified in two typical geometric configurations. $I_c$ bifurcates at a critical DDI strength, where $I_c$ can be decreased to about 70% of th…
We perform a magneto-optical study of a two-dimensional electron systems (2DES) in the regime of the Stoner ferromagnetic instability for even quantum Hall filling factors on Mg$_x$Zn$_{1-x}$O/ZnO heterostructures. Under conditions of Landau-level crossing, caused by enhanced spin susceptibility in combination with the tilting of the magnetic field, the transition between two rivaling phases- paramagnetic and ferromagnetic- is traced in terms of optical spectra reconstruction. Synchronous sharp transformations are observed both in the photoluminescence structure and parameters of collective ex…
We study the effects of an in-plane magnetic field on the ground state properties of both gapless and gapped graphene sheets within Random Phase Approximation. The critical magnetic field which leads to a fully spin polarized phase increases by decreasing the carrier density at zero gap indicating that no spontaneous magnetic phase transition occurs. However, at large energy gap values it decreases by decreasing the density. We find a continuous quantum magnetic phase transition (Stoner phase) for Dirac fermions in a doped graphene sheet. Novel in-plane magnetic field dependence of the charge …
We present a systematic numerical modeling investigation of magnetization dynamics and thermal magnetic moment fluctuations of single magnetic domain nanoparticles in a configuration applicable to enhancing inductive magnetic resonance detection signal to noise ratio (SNR). Previous proposals for oriented anisotropic single magnetic domain nanoparticle amplification of magnetic flux in MRI coil focused only on the coil pick-up voltage signal enhancement. Here we extend the analysis to the numerical evaluation of the SNR by modeling the inherent thermal magnetic noise introduced into the detect…
We explore the inelastic electron scattering cross section off a quantum dot close to the Stoner instability. We focus on the regime of strong Coulomb blockade in which the scattering cross section is dominated by the cotunneling processes. For large enough exchange interaction the quantum dot acquires a finite total spin in the ground state. In this, so-called mesoscopic Stoner instability, regime we find that at low enough temperatures the inelastic scattering cross section (including the contribution due to an elastic electron spin-flip) for an electron with a low energy with respect to the…
Spin splitting in the integer quantum Hall effect is investigated for a series of Al$_{x}$Ga$_{1-x}$As/GaAs heterojunctions and quantum wells. Magnetoresistance measurements are performed at mK temperature to characterize the electronic density of states and estimate the strength of many body interactions. A simple model with no free parameters correctly predicts the magnetic field required to observe spin splitting confirming that the appearance of spin splitting is a result of a competition between the disorder induced energy cost of flipping spins and the exchange energy gain associated wit…
The perpendicular shape anisotropy-spin transfer torque-magnetic random access memories (PSASTT-MRAMs) takes advantage of the nanopillar free-layer geometry for securing a good thermal stability factor from the shape anisotropy of the nanomagnet. Such a concept is particularly well-suited for small junctions down to a few nanometers. At such a volume size, the nanopillar can be effectively modeled as a Stoner-Wohlfarth (SW) particle, and the shape anisotropy scales with the spontaneous magnetization by ~ Ms^2. For almost all ferromagnets, Ms is a strong function of temperature, therefore, the …
We consider quasi-two-dimensional gas of electrons in a typical Si-MOSFET, assuming repulsive contact interaction between electrons. Magnetisation and susceptibility are evaluated within the mean-field approach. Finite thickness of the inversion layer results in an interaction-induced electron wave function change, not found in both purely two-dimensional and three-dimensional (bulk) cases. Taking this self-consistent change into account leads to an increased susceptibility and ultimately to a ferromagnetic transition deep in the high-density metallic regime. We further find that in the parama…
A detailed numerical simulation of quasistatic hysteresis loops of dense clusters of interacting magnetic nanoparticles is carried out. Both clusters of magnetically soft and magnetically hard nanoparticles are considered. The clusters are characterized by an average particle diameter D, the cluster radius Rc, the particle saturation magnetization Ms, and the uniaxial anisotropy constant K. The number of particles in the cluster varies between Np = 30 - 120. The particle centers are randomly distributed within the cluster, their easy anisotropy axes being randomly oriented. It is shown that a …
I present the exact analytical expression for the activation energy as a function of externally applied magnetic fields for a single--domain magnetic particle with uniaxial anisotropy (Stoner--Wohlfahrt model), and investigate the scaling behavior of the activation energy close to the switching boundary.
Spin-orbit coupling is a single-particle phenomenon known to generate topological order, and electron-electron interactions cause ordered many-body phases to exist. The rich interplay of these two mechanisms is present in a broad range of materials, and has been the subject of considerable ongoing research and controversy. Here we demonstrate that interacting two-dimensional electron systems with strong spin-orbit coupling exhibit a variety of time reversal symmetry breaking phases with unconventional spin alignment. We first prove that a Stoner-type criterion can be formulated for the spin po…
Around 50 years ago, Doniach [Proc. Phys. Soc. 91, 86 (1967)] predicted the existence of paramagnons in nearly ferromagnetic materials, recently measured in bulk Pd [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 027207 (2010)]. Here we predict the analogous effect for single adatoms, namely paramagnetic spin-excitations (PSE). Based on time-dependent density functional theory, we demonstrate that these overdamped excitations acquire a well-defined peak structure in the meV energy region when the adatom's Stoner criterion for magnetism is close to the critical point. In addition, our calculations reveal a subtle tunab…
We present a mechanism for deterministic control of the Bloch chirality in magnetic domain walls and skyrmions, originating from the interplay between an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii$-$Moriya interaction (DMI) and a perpendicular magnetic field. Although conventional interfacial DMI favors chiral Néel skyrmions, it does not break the energetic symmetry of the two Bloch chiralities in mixed Bloch$-$Néel skyrmions. However, the energy barrier to switching between Bloch chiralities does depend on the sense of rotation, which is dictated by the direction of the driving field. Our analytical and micr…
The physics of a quantum dot with electron-electron interactions is well captured by the so called "Universal Hamiltonian" if the dimensionless conductance of the dot is much higher than unity. Within this scheme interactions are represented by three spatially independent terms which describe the charging energy, the spin-exchange and the interaction in the Cooper channel. In this paper we concentrate on the exchange interaction and generalize the functional bosonization formalism developed earlier for the charging energy. This turned out to be challenging as the effective bosonic action is fo…
We investigate the formation of stable one-dimensional Néel walls in a ferromagnetic slab with finite thickness and finite width. Taking into account the dipolar, the exchange and the uniaxial anisotropic crystalline field interactions, we derive an approximative analytical self-consistent expression that gives the wall width in terms of ratios between the three different energy scales of the problem. We also show that, even when the crystalline anisotropy does not favour the formation of domain walls, they can yet be formed due to the dipolar interaction and the finiteness of the system. More…
We study the key domain wall properties in segmented nanowires loop-based structures used in domain wall based sensors. The two reasons for device failure, namely the distribution of domain wall propagation field (depinning) and the nucleation field are determined with Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE) and Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR) measurements for thousands of elements to obtain significant statistics. Single layers of Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$, a complete GMR stack with Co$_{90}$Fe$_{10}$/Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ as a free layer and a single layer of Co$_{90}$Fe$_{10}$ are deposited and industrially…
Micromagnetic sensors play a major role towards the miniaturization in the industrial society. The adoption of new and emerging sensor technologies like anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR), giant magnetoresistance (GMR) and tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) sensors are mainly driven by their integrability and enhanced sensitivity. At the core of such sensors, a microstructured ferromagnetic thin film element transduces the magnetic signal. Such elements usually switch via multi-domain, C- or S-shaped magnetization states and, therefore, often exhibit an open non-linear hysteresis curve. Linearity…
