Context. The study of the oldest and most metal-poor stars in our Galaxy promotes our understanding of the Galactic chemical evolution and the beginning of Galaxy and star formation. However, they are notoriously difficult to find, with only five stars at $\mathrm{[Fe/H]<-5.0}$ having been detected to date. Thus, the spectrophotometric data of 219 million sources which became available in the third Gaia Data Release comprise a very promising dataset for the identification of metal-poor stars. Aims. We want to use the low-resolution Gaia Blue Photometer / Red Photometer (BP/RP) spectra to identify metal-poor stars. Our primary aspiration is to help populate the poorly constrained tail of the metallicity distribution function of the stellar halo of the Galaxy. Methods. We developed a metal-poor candidate selection method based on flux ratios from the BP/RP Gaia spectra, using simulated synthetic spectra. Results. We found a relation between the relative iron abundance and the flux ratio of the Ca H \& K region to that of the $\mathrm{Hβ}$ line. This relation is temperature and surface gravity dependent, and it holds for stars with $\mathrm{4800\,K \leq T_{eff}\leq6300\,K}$. We applied it to noisy simulated synthetic spectra and inferred $\mathrm{[Fe/H]}$ with an uncertainty of $σ_{\mathrm{[Fe/H]}}\lessapprox0.65$ dex for $\mathrm{-3\leq[Fe/H]}\leq 0.5$ and G=15-17mag, which is sufficient to identify stars at $\mathrm{[Fe/H]<-2.0 }$ reliably. We predict that by selecting stars with inferred $\mathrm{[Fe/H]}\leq-2.5$ dex, we can retrieve 80% of the stars with $\mathrm{[Fe/H]}\leq-3$ and have a success rate of about 50%, that is one in two stars we select would have $\mathrm{[Fe/H]}\leq-3$. We do not take into account the effect of reddening, so our method should only be applied to stars which are located in regions of low extinction.
We performed a detailed study of the ratio of low-α to high-α stars in the Galactic halo as observed by the Gaia-ESO Survey. Using a sample of 381 metal-poor stars from the second internal data release, we found that the value of this ratio did not show evidence of systematic trends as a function of metallicity, surface gravity, Galactic latitude, Galactic longitude, height above the Galactic plane, and Galactocentric radius. We conclude that the α-poor/α-rich value of 0.28 $\pm$ 0.08 suggests that in the inner halo, the larger portion of stars were formed in a high star formation rate environ…

We present the age-velocity dispersion relation (AVR) in three dimensions in the solar neighbourhood using 3,564 commonly observed sub-giant/red-giant branch stars selected from LAMOST, which gives the age and radial velocity, and \emph{Gaia}, which measures the distance and proper motion. The stars are separated into metal-poor (${\rm [Fe/H]<-0.2}$\,dex and metal-rich (${\rm [Fe/H]>-0.2}$\,dex) groups, so that the metal-rich stars are mostly $α$-poor, while the metal-poor group are mostly contributed by $α$-enhanced stars. Thus, the old and metal-poor stars likely belong to the chemically def…
Streams of stars from captured dwarf galaxies and dissolved globular clusters are identifiable through the similarity of their orbital parameters, a fact that remains true long after the streams have dispersed spatially. We calculate the integrals of motion for 44855 stars, to a distance of 4 kpc from the Sun, which have full and accurate 6D phase space positions in the Gaia DR2 catalogue. We then apply a novel combination of data mining, numerical and statistical techniques to search for stellar streams. This process returns seven high-confidence streams (including four that were not previous…
In this study, we report a probabilistic insight into the stellar mass and supernovae (SNe) explosion energy of the possible progenitors of five CEMP-no stars. This was done by a direct comparison between the abundance ratios [X/Fe] of the light-elements and the predicted nucleosynthetic yields of SN of high-mass metal-free stars. This comparison suggests possible progenitors with stellar mass range of 11 - 22\,M$_{\odot}$ and explosion energies of $0.3 - 1.8 \times 10^{51}$\,erg. The coupling of the chemical abundances with kinematics derived from $Gaia$ DR2 suggests that our sample do not en…
Several large stellar spectroscopic surveys are producing overwhelming amounts of data that can be used for determining stellar atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances. Nonetheless, the accuracy achieved in the derived astrophysical parameters is still insufficient, mainly because of the paucity of adequate calibrators, particularly in the metal-poor regime ([Fe/H] $\leq -$1.0). Here, we introduce the Titans metal-poor reference stars: a sample of 41 dwarf and subgiant stars with accurate parameters. Effective temperatures (Teff) were derived by fitting observed H$α$ profiles with synth…
Action space synthesizes the orbital information of stars and is well-suited to analyse the rich kinematic substructure of the disc in the \emph{Gaia} DR2 radial velocity sample (RVS). We revisit the strong perturbation induced in the Milky Way (MW) disc by an $m=2$ bar, using test particle simulations and the actions $(J_R,L_z,J_z)$ estimated in an axisymmetric potential. These make three useful diagnostics cleanly visible. (1.) We use the well-known characteristic flip from outward to inward motion at the Outer Lindblad Resonance (OLR, $l=+1,m=2$), which occurs along the axisymmetric resonan…
We present a comprehensive analysis (photometric and kinematical) of poorly studied open cluster NGC 4337 using 2MASS, WISE, APASS, and Gaia~DR2 database. By determining the membership probabilities of stars, we identified 624 most probable members with membership probability higher than $50\%$ by using proper motion and parallax data taken from Gaia~DR2. The mean proper motion of the cluster is obtained as $μ_{x}=-8.83\pm0.01$ and $μ_{y}=1.49\pm0.006$ mas yr$^{-1}$. We find the normal interstellar extinction towards the cluster region. The radial distribution of members provides a cluster rad…
We present the first results of the EMBLA survey (Extremely Metal-poor BuLge stars with AAOmega), aimed at finding metal-poor stars in the Milky Way bulge, where the oldest stars should now preferentially reside. EMBLA utilises SkyMapper photometry to pre-select metal-poor candidates, which are subsequently confirmed using AAOmega spectroscopy. We describe the discovery and analysis of four bulge giants with -2.72<=[Fe/H]<=-2.48, the lowest metallicity bulge stars studied with high-resolution spectroscopy to date. Using FLAMES/UVES spectra through the Gaia-ESO Survey we have derived abundances…

The Milky Way disk exhibits intricate orbit substructure of still-debated dynamical origin. The angle variables $(θ_ϕ,θ_R)$ -- which are conjugates to the actions $(L_z,J_R)$, and describe a star's location along its orbit -- are a powerful diagnostic to identify $l$:$m$ resonances via the orbit shape relation $Δθ_R / Δθ_ϕ= -m/l$. In the past, angle signatures have been hidden by survey selection effects (SEs). Using test particle simulations of a barred galaxy, we demonstrate that \emph{Gaia} should allow us to identify the Galactic bar's Outer Lindblad Resonance ($l=+1, m=2$, OLR) in angle s…

We use the first Gaia data release, combined with RAVE and APOGEE spectroscopic surveys, to investigate the origin of halo stars within <~3 kpc from the Sun. We identify halo stars kinematically, as moving with a relative speed of at least 220 km/s with respect to the local standard of rest. These stars are in general more metal-poor than the disk, but surprisingly, half of our halo sample is comprised of stars with [Fe/H]>-1. The orbital directions of these metal-rich halo stars are preferentially aligned with the disk rotation, in sharp contrast with the isotropic orbital distribution of the…
Extended stellar haloes are a natural by-product of the hierarchical formation of massive galaxies. If merging is a non-negligible factor in the growth of our Galaxy, evidence of such events should be encoded in its stellar halo. Reliable identification of genuine halo stars is a challenging task however. The 1st Gaia data release contains the positions, parallaxes and proper motions for over 2 million stars, mostly in the Solar neighbourhood. Gaia DR2 will enlarge this sample to over 1.5 billion stars, the brightest ~5 million of which will have a full phase-space information. Our aim is to d…
Based on the second Gaia data (Gaia DR2) and spectroscopy from the LAMOST Data Release 5, we defined the high-velocity (HiVel) stars sample as those stars with $v_{\mathrm{gc}} > 0.85 v_{\mathrm{esc}}$, and derived the final sample of 24 HiVel stars with stellar astrometric parameters and radial velocities. Most of the HiVel stars are metal-poor and $α$-enhanced. In order to further explore the origin of these HiVel stars, we traced the backwards orbits of each HiVel star in the Galactic potential to derive probability parameters which are used to classify these HiVel stars. Of these, 5 stars …

Star clusters, particularly those objects in the disk-bulge-halo interface are as of yet poorly charted, albeit carrying important information about the formation and the structure of the Milky Way. Here, we present a detailed chemical abundance study of the recently discovered object Gaia 1. Photometry has previously suggested it as an intermediate-age, moderately metal-rich system, although the exact values for its age and metallicity remained ambiguous in the literature. We measured detailed chemical abundances of 14 elements in four red giant members, from high-resolution (R=25000) spectra…
(Abridged) We analyzed the stellar parameters and radial velocities of ~1200 stars in five bulge fields as determined from the Gaia-ESO survey data (iDR1). We use VISTA Variables in The Via Lactea (VVV) photometry to obtain reddening values by using a semi-empirical T_eff-color calibration. From a Gaussian decomposition of the metallicity distribution functions, we unveil a clear bimodality in all fields, with the relative size of components depending of the specific position on the sky. In agreement with some previous studies, we find a mild gradient along the minor axis (-0.05 dex/deg betwee…
We characterize the kinematic and chemical properties of 589 Galactic Anticenter Substructure Stars (GASS) with K-/M- giants in Integrals-of-Motion space. These stars likely include members of previously identified substructures such as Monoceros, A13, and the Triangulum-Andromeda cloud (TriAnd). We show that these stars are on nearly circular orbits on both sides of the Galactic plane. We can see velocity($V_{Z}$) gradient along Y-axis especially for the south GASS members. Our GASS members have similar energy and angular momentum distributions to thin disk stars. Their location in [$α$/M] vs…
The low-metallicity, kinematically interesting dwarf stars studied by Stephens \& Boesgaard (2002, SB02) are re-examined using Gaia DR2 astrometry, and updated model atmospheres and atomic line data. New stellar parameters are determined based on the Gaia DR2 parallactic distances and Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Database isochrones. These are in excellent agreement with spectroscopically determined stellar parameters for stars with [Fe/H]$>-2$; however, large disagreements are found for stars with [Fe/H]$\le-2$, with offsets as large as $Δ$T$_{\rm eff}\sim+500$ K and $Δ$log\,$g\sim+1.0$. A sub…
In this work we combine information from solar-like oscillations, high-resolution spectroscopy and Gaia astrometry to derive stellar ages, chemical abundances and kinematics for a group of seven metal-poor Red Giants and characterise them in a multidimensional chrono-chemo-dynamical space. Chemical abundance ratios were derived through classical spectroscopic analysis employing 1D LTE atmospheres on Keck/HIRES spectra. Stellar ages, masses and radii were calculated with grid-based modelling, taking advantage of availability of asteroseismic information from Kepler. The dynamical properties wer…
We analyse the kinematics of $\sim 2000$ giant stars in the direction of the Galactic bulge, extracted from the Gaia-ESO survey in the region $-10^\circ \lesssim \ell \lesssim 10^\circ$ and $-11^\circ \lesssim b \lesssim -3^\circ$. We find distinct kinematic trends in the metal rich ($\mathrm{[M/H]}>0$) and metal poor ($\mathrm{[M/H]}<0$) stars in the data. The velocity dispersion of the metal-rich stars drops steeply with latitude, compared to a flat profile in the metal-poor stars, as has been seen previously. We argue that the metal-rich stars in this region are mostly on orbits that suppor…
Gaia Data Release 3 has provided the astronomical community with the largest stellar spectroscopic survey to date ($>$ 220 million sources). The low resolution (R$\sim$50) blue photometer (BP) and red photometer (RP) spectra will allow for the estimation of stellar atmospheric parameters such as effective temperature, surface gravity and metallicity. We create mock Gaia BP/RP spectra and use Fisher information matrices to probe the resolution limit of stellar parameter measurements using BP/RP spectra. The best-case scenario uncertainties that this analysis provides are then used to produce a …
The membership determination for open clusters in noisy environments of the Milky Way is still an open problem. In this paper, our main aim is provide the membership probability of stars using proper motions and parallax values of stars using Gaia EDR3 astrometry. Apart from the Gaia astrometry, we have also used other photometric data sets like UKIDSS, WISE, APASS and Pan-STARRS1 in order to understand cluster properties from optical to mid-infrared regions. We selected 438 likely members with membership probability higher than $50\%$ and G$\le$20 mag. We obtained the mean value of proper mot…
Blue Large Amplitude Pulsators (BLAPs) are hot, subluminous stars undergoing rapid variability with periods of under 60 mins. They have been linked with the early stages of pre-white dwarfs and hot subdwarfs. They are a rare class of variable star due to their evolutionary history within interacting binary systems and the short timescales relative to their lifetime in which they are pulsationally unstable. All currently known BLAPs are relatively faint (15-19 mag) and are located in the Galactic plane. These stars have intrinsically blue colours but the large interstellar extinction in the Gal…
We explore the contribution of the Gaia-Sausage to the stellar halo of the Milky Way by making use of a Gaussian Mixture model (GMM) and applying it to halo star samples of LAMOST K giants, SEGUE K giants, and SDSS blue horizontal branch stars. The GMM divides the stellar halo into two parts, of which one represents a more metal-rich and highly radially biased component associated with an ancient, head-on collision referred to as the Gaia-Sausage, and the other one is a more metal-poor and isotropic halo. A symmetric bimodal Gaussian is used to describe the distribution of spherical velocity o…

The formation and evolution of binary star systems still remain key questions in modern astronomy. Wide binary pairs (separations $>10^3$ AU) are particularly intriguing because their low binding energies make it difficult for the stars to stay gravitationally bound over extended timescales, and thus probe the dynamics of binary formation and dissolution. Our previous SLoWPoKES I \& II catalogs provided the largest and most complete sample of wide binary pairs of low masses. Here we present an extension of these catalogs to a broad range of stellar masses: the Gaia Assorted Mass Binaries Long E…
We study the formation and evolution of the tidal tail released from a young Pleiades-like star cluster, due to expulsion of primordial gas in a realistic gravitational field of the Galaxy. The tidal tails (as well as clusters) are integrated from their embedded phase for 300 Myr. We vary star formation efficiencies (SFEs) from 33% to 100% and the timescales of gas expulsion as free parameters, and provide predictions for the morphology and kinematics of the evolved tail for each of the models. The resulting tail properties are intended for comparison with anticipated Gaia observations in orde…
Accurate determinations of stellar parameters and distances for large complete samples of stars are keys for conducting detailed studies of the formation and evolution of our Galaxy. Here we present stellar atmospheric parameters ($T_{\rm eff}$, luminosity classifications, and [Fe/H]) estimates for some 24 million stars determined from the stellar colors of SMSS DR2 and Gaia EDR3, based on training datasets with available spectroscopic measurements from previous high/medium/low-resolution spectroscopic surveys. The number of stars with photometric-metallicity estimates is 4-5 times larger than…
We explore the phase-space structure of nearby halo stars identified kinematically from Gaia DR2 data. We focus on their distribution in velocity and in "integrals of motion" space as well as on their photometric properties. Our sample of stars selected to be moving at a relative velocity of at least 210 km/s with respect to the Local Standard of Rest, contains an important contribution from the low rotational velocity tail of the disk(s). The $V_R$-distribution of these stars depicts a small asymmetry similar to that seen for the faster rotating thin disk stars near the Sun. We also identify …
We present a chemo-dynamical analysis of low-resolution ($R \sim 1300$) spectroscopy of stars from the AAOmega Evolution of Galactic Structure (AEGIS) survey, focusing on two key populations of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars within the disk system of the Milky Way: a mildly prograde population ($L_z < 1000\,$kpc$\,$km$\,$s$^{-1}$) and a strongly prograde ($L_z > 1000\,$kpc$\,$km$\,$s$^{-1}$) population. Based on their chemical and kinematic characteristics, and on comparisons with similar populations found in the recent literature, we tentatively associate the former with an ex-situ i…
Abridged: We used the fourth internal data release of the Gaia-ESO survey to characterize the bulge chemistry, spatial distribution, kinematics, and to compare it chemically with the thin and thick disks. The sample consist on ~2500 red clump stars in 11 bulge fields ($-10^\circ\leq l\leq+8^\circ$ and $-10^\circ\leq b\leq-4^\circ$), and a set of ~6300 disk stars selected for comparison. The bulge MDF is confirmed to be bimodal across the whole sampled area, with metal-poor stars dominating at high latitudes. The metal-rich stars exhibit bar-like kinematics and display a bimodality in their mag…
A chemo-dynamical analysis of 115 metal-poor candidate stars selected from the narrow-band Pristine photometric survey is presented based on CFHT high-resolution ESPaDoNS spectroscopy. We have discover 28 new bright (V < 15) stars with [Fe/H]<-2.5 and 5 with [Fe/H]<-3.0 for success rates of 40% (28/70) and 19% (5/27), respectively. A detailed model atmospheres analysis is carried out for the 28 new metal-poor stars. Stellar parameters were determined from SDSS photometric colours, Gaia DR2 parallaxes, MESA/MIST stellar isochrones, and the initial Pristine survey metallicities, following a Baye…
Hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe-I) have been predominantly found in low-metallicity, star-forming dwarf galaxies. Here we identify Gaia17biu/SN 2017egm as an SLSN-I occurring in a "normal" spiral galaxy (NGC 3191) in terms of stellar mass (several times 10^10 M_sun) and metallicity (roughly Solar). At redshift z=0.031, Gaia17biu is also the lowest redshift SLSN-I to date, and the absence of a larger population of SLSNe-I in dwarf galaxies of similar redshift suggests that metallicity is likely less important to the production of SLSNe-I than previously believed. With the smallest…
Based on the first Gaia data release and spectroscopy from the LAMOST Data Release 4, we study the kinematics and chemistry of the local halo stars. The halo stars are identified kinematically with a relative speed of at least 220 km s$^{-1}$ with respect to the local standard of rest. In total, 436 halo stars are identified. From this halo sample, 16 high velocity (HiVel) stars are identified. We studied the metallicity and [$α$/Fe] distribution of these HiVel stars. Though most of HiVel stars are metal-poor, there are several stars that have metallicity above $-0.5$ dex. To understand the or…
The origin of multiple stellar populations in Globular Clusters (GCs) is one of the greatest mysteries of modern stellar astrophysics. N-body simulations suggest that the present-day dynamics of GC stars can constrain the events that occurred at high redshift and led to the formation of multiple populations. Here, we combine multi-band photometry from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and ground-based facilities with HST and Gaia Data Release 2 proper motions to investigate the spatial distributions and the motions in the plane of the sky of multiple populations in the type II GCs NGC 5139 ($ω\…
Context. The TOPoS project has the goal to find and analyse Turn-Off (TO) stars of extremely low metallicity. To select the targets for spectroscopic follow-up at high spectral resolution, we have relied on low-resolution spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Aims. In this paper we use the metallicity estimates we have obtained from our analysis of the SDSS spectra to construct the metallicity distribution function (MDF) of the Milky Way, with special emphasis on its metal-weak tail. The goal is to provide the underlying distribution out of which the TOPoS sample was extracted. Methods. W…
