Blue Large Amplitude Pulsators (BLAPs) are hot, subluminous stars undergoing rapid variability with periods of under 60 mins. They have been linked with the early stages of pre-white dwarfs and hot subdwarfs. They are a rare class of variable star due to their evolutionary history within interacting binary systems and the short timescales relative to their lifetime in which they are pulsationally unstable. All currently known BLAPs are relatively faint (15-19 mag) and are located in the Galactic plane. These stars have intrinsically blue colours but the large interstellar extinction in the Galactic plane prevents them from swift identification using colour-based selection criteria. In this paper, we correct the Gaia $G$-band apparent magnitude and $G_{\mathrm{BP}}-G_{\mathrm{RP}}$ colours of 89.6 million sources brighter than 19 mag in the Galactic plane with good quality photometry combined with supplementary all-sky data totalling 162.3 million sources. Selecting sources with colours consistent with the known population of BLAPs and performing a cross-match with the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) DR3, we identify 98 short period candidate variables. Manual inspection of the period-folded light curves reveals 22 candidate BLAPs. Of these targets, 6 are consistent with the observed periods and light curves of the known BLAPs, 10 are within the theoretical period range of BLAPs and 6 are candidate high-gravity BLAPs. We present follow-up spectra of 21 of these candidate sources and propose to classify 1 of them as a BLAP, and tentatively assign an additional 8 of them as BLAPs for future population studies.
We present the goals, strategy and first results of the high-cadence Galactic plane survey using the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). The goal of the survey is to unveil the Galactic population of short-period variable stars, including short period binaries and stellar pulsators with periods less than a few hours. Between June 2018 and January 2019, we observed 64 ZTF fields resulting in 2990 deg$^2$ of high stellar density in ZTF-$r$ band along the Galactic Plane. Each field was observed continuously for 1.5 to 6 hrs with a cadence of 40 sec. Most fields have between 200 and 400 observations …

Blue Large Amplitude Pulsators (BLAPs) are blue stars showing high amplitude (>0.2 mag) pulsations on a timescale of a few tens of mins. They form a new class of variable star recently discovered using OGLE data. It has lead to a number of investigations searching for the origin of these pulsations. This short study presents the Gaia DR2 data of ten BLAPs which have parallax measurements. We have dereddened their colours using Gaia DR2 data from the stars in their immediate field and find that six show absolute magnitude and intrinsic colour consistent with expectations, whilst four stars have…

We study the fraction of stars in and around the δ Scuti instability strip that are pulsating, using {\em Gaia} DR2 parallaxes to derive precise luminosities. We classify a sample of over 15,000 {\em Kepler} A and F stars into δ Sct and non-δ Sct stars, paying close attention to variability that could have other origins. We find that 18 per cent of the δ Sct stars have their dominant frequency above the Kepler long-cadence Nyquist frequency (periods < 1 hr), and 30 per cent have some super-Nyquist variability. We analyse the pulsator fraction as a function of effective temperature and luminosi…

Gaia19bxc is a transient detected on 2019 May 9 by the Gaia Photometric Science Alerts Team. I analyzed the past public Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) data and found that Gaia19bxc has a period of 0.04473647(3) d and two different maxima in one cycle. This object also showed high and low states in the ZTF data. Based on the high amplitude (2.0 mag) of the short-term variations, short period, almost zero color indices between the different ZTF bands and the absence of a longer period, I classified it to be a likely polar. There has been no established polar below the period minimum of cataclys…
Gaia22ayj (=ZTF19aagmvuk) was detected as a transient on 2022 March 3 both by the Gaia satellite and the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). I analyzed the past public ZTF data and found that Gaia22ayj showed coherent large-amplitude double-wave variations with a period of 0.00649910257(13) d = 9.36 min. The period can be either from the spin period of the white dwarf or the orbital period of the binary. I consider the latter possibility more likely based on the light curve resembling an eclipsing binary and on the stability of the profile. The presence of an outburst lasting at least ~1 d sugges…
Gaia provided the largest-ever catalogue of white dwarf stars. We use this catalogue, along with the third public data release of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), to identify new eclipsing white dwarf binaries. Our method exploits light curve statistics and the Box Least Squares algorithm to detect periodic light curve variability. The search revealed 18 new binaries, of which 17 are eclipsing. We use the position in the Gaia H-R diagram to classify these binaries and find that the majority of these white dwarfs have main sequence companions. We identify one system as a candidate eclipsing…

We present the discovery of three new $β$ Cep pulsators, three new pulsators with frequency groupings, and frequency patterns in a B3Ib star, all of which show pulsations with frequencies as high as about 17 d$^{-1}$, with K2 space mission photometry. Based on a Fourier analysis and iterative pre-whitening we present a classification and evaluate the potential for asteroseismic modelling. We include the lists of pulsation frequencies for three new $β$ Cep pulsators, CD-28 12286, CD-27 10876, LS 3978, and additional pulsation mode frequencies for the known $β$ Cep pulsator HD 164741. In additio…
Based on updated pulsation models for Classical Cepheids, computed for various assumptions about the metallicity and helium abundance, roughly representative of pulsators in the Small Magellanic Cloud ($Z$=$0.004$ and $Y$=$0.25$), Large Magellanic Cloud ($Z$=$0.008$ and $Y$=$0.25$), and M31 ($Z$=$0.03$ and $Y$=$0.28$), and self-consistent updated evolutionary predictions, we derived Period-Age and multi-band Period-Age-Color relations that also take into account variations in the Mass-Luminosity relation. These results, combined with those previously derived for Galactic Cepheids, were used to…
Classical double-mode pulsators (RR Lyrae stars and delta Cepheids) are important for their simultaneous pulsation in low-order radial modes. This enables us to put stringent constraints on their physical parameters. We use 30 bright galactic double-mode RR~Lyrae (RRd) stars to estimate their luminosities and compare them with those derived from the parallaxes of the recent data release (EDR3) of the Gaia survey. We employ pulsation and evolutionary models, together with observationally determined effective temperatures to derive the basic stellar parameters. Excluding 6 outlying stars (e.g., …
We discuss the impact that Gaia, a European Space Agency (ESA) cornerstone mission that has been in scientific operations since July 2014, is expected to have on the definition of the cosmic distance ladder and the study of resolved stellar populations in and beyond the Milky Way, specifically focusing on results based on Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars. Gaia is observing about 1.7 billion sources, measuring their position, trigonometric parallax, proper motions and time-series photometry in 3 pass-bands down to a faint magnitude limit of G $\sim$21 mag. Among them are thousands of Cepheids and hu…
We present a new extended and detailed set of models for Classical Cepheid pulsators at solar chemical composition ($Z=0.02$, $Y=0.28$) based on a well tested nonlinear hydrodynamical approach. In order to model the possible dependence on crucial assumptions such as the Mass-Luminosity relation of central Helium burning intermediate-mass stars or the efficiency of superadiabatic convection, the model set was computed by varying not only the pulsation mode and the stellar mass but also the Mass-Luminosity relation and the mixing length parameter that is used to close the system of nonlinear hyd…
We present a comparison of the Gaia DR1 samples of pulsating variable stars - Cepheids and RR Lyrae type - with the OGLE Collection of Variable Stars aiming at the characterization of the Gaia mission performance in the stellar variability domain. Out of 575 Cepheids and 2322 RR Lyrae candidates from the Gaia DR1 samples located in the OGLE footprint in the sky, 559 Cepheids and 2302 RR Lyrae stars are genuine pulsators of these types. The number of misclassified stars is low indicating reliable performance of the Gaia data pipeline. The completeness of the Gaia DR1 samples of Cepheids and RR …
The identification and analysis of different variable sources is a hot issue in astrophysical research. The Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) spectroscopic survey has accumulated massive spectral data but contains no information about variable sources. Although a few related studies present variable source catalogs for the LAMOST, the studies still have a few deficiencies regarding the type and number of variable sources identified. In this study, we presented a statistical modeling approach to identify variable source candidates. We first crossed the Kepler, S…
AM CVn systems are a rare type of accreting binary that consists of a white dwarf and a helium-rich, degenerate donor star. Using the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), we searched for new AM CVn systems by focusing on blue, outbursting stars. We first selected outbursting stars using the ZTF alerts. We cross-matched the candidates with $Gaia$ and Pan-STARRS catalogs. The initial selection of candidates based on the $Gaia$ $BP$-$RP$ contains 1751 unknown objects. We used the Pan-STARRS $g$-$r$ and $r$-$i$ color in combination with the $Gaia$ color to identify 59 high-priority candidates. We obta…
Context: The period-luminosity diagram (PLD) has proven to be a powerful tool for studying populations of pulsating red giants. Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) provides a large data set including many long-period variables (LPVs) on which this tool can be applied. Aims: We investigate the location of LPVs from the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds in the PLD using various optical and infrared luminosity indicators from Gaia and 2MASS, respectively. We thereby distinguish between stars of different masses and surface chemistry. Methods: The data set taken from the Gaia DR2 catalogue of LPVs allows fo…
We present the results of our search for variable stars using the long-term Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) monitoring of white dwarf ZTF J0139+5245 with the two 1.0-m telescope nodes located at McDonald Observatory using the Sinistro imaging instrument. In this search, we find 38 variable sources, of which 27 are newly discovered or newly classified (71%) based on comparisons with previously published catalogs, thereby increasing the number of detections in the field-of-view under consideration by a factor of $\approx$ 2.5. We find that the improved photometric precision per-exposure due to lon…
This work is dedicated to a search for new pulsating hot subdwarfs in TESS photometric data which could have been missed in previous searches. By matching catalogues of hot subdwarfs with TESS targets and using luminosities from Gaia parallaxes, a list of 1389 candidate hot subdwarfs observed by TESS was created. The periodograms of these stars were inspected, and the stars were classified according to variability type. An updated catalogue of all known pulsating hot subdwarfs is presented. A number of probable pulsating binaries have been identified, which might prove useful for verifying the…
The Galactic globular clusters (GGCs) located in the inner regions of the Milky Way suffer from high extinction that makes their observation challenging. The VVV survey provides a way to explore these GGCs in the near-infrared where extinction effects are highly diminished. We conduct a search for variable stars in several inner GGCs, taking advantage of the unique multi-epoch, wide-field, near-infrared photometry provided by the VVV survey. We are especially interested in detecting classical pulsators that will help us constrain the physical parameters of these GGCs. In this paper, the second…

We characterize an all-sky catalog of ${\sim} 8,400$ $δ$ Scuti variables in ASAS-SN, which includes ${\sim} 3,300$ new discoveries. Using distances from \textit{Gaia} DR2, we derive period-luminosity relationships (PLRs) for both the fundamental mode and overtone pulsators in the $W_{JK}$, $V$, Gaia DR2 $G$, $J$, $H$, $K_s$ and $W_1$ bands. We find that the overtone pulsators have a dominant overtone mode, with many sources pulsating in the second overtone or higher order modes. The fundamental mode pulsators have metallicity dependent periods, with $\log_{10} (\rm P){\sim}-1.1$ for $\rm [Fe/H…
The Galactic Bulge exploration I.: The period-absolute\,magnitude-metallicity relations for RR~Lyrae stars for $G_{\rm BP}$, $V$, $G$, $G_{\rm RP}$, $I$, $J$, $H$, and $K_{\rm s}$ passbands using $Gaia$ DR3 parallaxes
Through an innovative combination of multiple observing techniques and mod- eling, we are assembling a comprehensive understanding of the pulsation and close environment of Cepheids. We developed the SPIPS modeling tool that combines all observables (radial velocimetry, photometry, angular diameters from interferometry) to derive the relevant physical parameters of the star (effective temperature, infrared ex- cess, reddening,...) and the ratio of the distance and the projection factor d/p. We present the application of SPIPS to the long-period Cepheid RS Pup, for which we derive p = 1.25 +/- …
Classical Cepheids provide the foundation for the empirical extragalactic distance ladder. Milky Way Cepheids are the only stars in this class accessible to trigonometric parallax measurements. However, the parallaxes of Cepheids from the second Gaia data release (GDR2) are affected by systematics because of the absence of chromaticity correction, and occasionally by saturation. As a proxy for the parallaxes of 36 Galactic Cepheids, we adopt either the GDR2 parallaxes of their spatially resolved companions or the GDR2 parallax of their host open cluster. This novel approach allows us to bypass…
The second data release of the Gaia mission includes an advance catalog of variable stars. The classification of these stars are based on sparse photometry from the first 22 months of the mission. We set out to investigate the purity and completeness of the all-sky Gaia classification results with the help of the continuous light curves of the observed targets from the Kepler and K2 missions, focusing specifically on RR Lyrae and Cepheid pulsators, outside the Galactic Bulge region. We crossmatched the Gaia identifications with the observations collected by the Kepler space telescope. We inspe…
The {\it Gaia} satellite recently released parallax measurements for $\sim$260,000 high-confidence white dwarf candidates, allowing for precise measurements of their physical parameters. By combining these parallaxes with Pan-STARRS and $u$-band photometry, we measured the effective temperature and stellar mass for all white dwarfs in the Northern Hemisphere within 100 parsecs of the Sun, and identified a sample of ZZ Ceti white dwarf candidates within the so-called instability strip. We acquired high-speed photometric observations for 90 candidates using the PESTO camera attached to the 1.6-m…

Recently, a single-line spectroscopic binary, LTD064402+245919, has been discovered by Yang et al. Using data from LAMOST and ZTF, the unseen companion is estimated to have a mass of 1-3 $M_{\odot}$, orbiting a subgiant with orbital period of 14.50 days, making it a good compact binary candidate without X-ray emission. However, new light curves from ZTF and ASAS-SN, have shown the depth of one dip increases towards a bluer wavelength, indicating LTD064402+245919 is more likely to be a subgiant with a red star. Using both Wilson-Devinney code and Phoebe, the derived $T_{eff}$ of secondary is ab…
We present the first version of the ALeRCE (Automatic Learning for the Rapid Classification of Events) broker light curve classifier. ALeRCE is currently processing the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) alert stream, in preparation for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. The ALeRCE light curve classifier uses variability features computed from the ZTF alert stream, and colors obtained from AllWISE and ZTF photometry. We apply a Balanced Random Forest algorithm with a two-level scheme, where the top level classifies each source as periodic, stochastic, or transient, and the bottom level further resolv…
The {\sl TESS} space mission has recently demonstrated its great potential to discover new pulsating white dwarf and pre-white dwarf stars, and to detect periodicities with high precision in already known white-dwarf pulsators. We report the discovery of two new pulsating He-rich atmosphere white dwarfs (DBVs) and present a detailed asteroseismological analysis of three already known DBV stars employing observations collected by the {\sl TESS} mission along with ground-based data. We extracted frequencies from the {\sl TESS} light curves of these DBV stars using a standard pre-whitening proced…
Blue large-amplitude pulsators (BLAPs) form a small group of hot objects pulsating in a fundamental radial mode with periods of the order of 30 minutes. Proposed evolutionary scenarios explain them as evolved low-mass stars: either ~0.3 M$_\odot$ shell-hydrogen-burning objects with a degenerated helium core, or more massive (0.5 - 0.8) M$_\odot$ core-helium-burning stars, or ~0.7 M$_\odot$ surviving companions of type Ia supernovae. Therefore, their origin remains to be established. Using data from Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, we discovered that HD 133729 is a binary consisting of a …
Anomalous Cepheids (ACs) are metal-deficient, core-helium-burning pulsating stars with masses in the range 1.2-2.2 M_S. Until recently, all known ACs were pure single-mode pulsators. The first candidate for an AC pulsating in more than one radial mode - OGLE-GAL-ACEP-091 - was recently identified in the Milky Way based on the photometric database of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) survey. We analyze this object showing that it is actually a triple-mode pulsator. Its position in the Petersen diagram, the light-curve morphology quantified by Fourier coefficients, and absolute…

Pulsation frequencies reveal the interior structures of white dwarf stars, shedding light on the properties of these compact objects that represent the final evolutionary stage of most stars. Two-minute cadence photometry from TESS will record pulsation signatures from bright white dwarfs over the entire sky. We aim to demonstrate the sensitivity of TESS data to measuring pulsations of helium-atmosphere white dwarfs in the DBV instability strip, and what asteroseismic analysis of these measurements can constrain about their stellar structures. We present a case study of the pulsating DBV WD 01…
