Kinematic structures are very common in the real world. They range from simple articulated objects to complex mechanical systems. However, despite their relevance, most model-based 3D tracking methods only consider rigid objects. To overcome this limitation, we propose a flexible framework that allows the extension of existing 6DoF algorithms to kinematic structures. Our approach focuses on methods that employ Newton-like optimization techniques, which are widely used in object tracking. The framework considers both tree-like and closed kinematic structures and allows a flexible configuration of joints and constraints. To project equations from individual rigid bodies to a multi-body system, Jacobians are used. For closed kinematic chains, a novel formulation that features Lagrange multipliers is developed. In a detailed mathematical proof, we show that our constraint formulation leads to an exact kinematic solution and converges in a single iteration. Based on the proposed framework, we extend ICG, which is a state-of-the-art rigid object tracking algorithm, to multi-body tracking. For the evaluation, we create a highly-realistic synthetic dataset that features a large number of sequences and various robots. Based on this dataset, we conduct a wide variety of experiments that demonstrate the excellent performance of the developed framework and our multi-body tracker.
We present a novel object tracking scheme that can track rigid objects in real time. The approach uses subpixel-precise image edges to track objects with high accuracy. It can determine the object position, scale, and rotation with subpixel-precision at around 80fps. The tracker returns a reliable score for each frame and is capable of self diagnosing a tracking failure. Furthermore, the choice of the similarity measure makes the approach inherently robust against occlusion, clutter, and nonlinear illumination changes. We evaluate the method on sequences from rigid objects from the OTB-2015 an…

In this paper, we propose a novel effective non-rigid object tracking framework based on the spatial-temporal consistent saliency detection. In contrast to most existing trackers that utilize a bounding box to specify the tracked target, the proposed framework can extract accurate regions of the target as tracking outputs. It achieves a better description of the non-rigid objects and reduces the background pollution for the tracking model. Furthermore, our model has several unique features. First, a tailored fully convolutional neural network (TFCN) is developed to model the local saliency pri…

Template-based discriminative trackers are currently the dominant tracking paradigm due to their robustness, but are restricted to bounding box tracking and a limited range of transformation models, which reduces their localization accuracy. We propose a discriminative single-shot segmentation tracker -- D3S2, which narrows the gap between visual object tracking and video object segmentation. A single-shot network applies two target models with complementary geometric properties, one invariant to a broad range of transformations, including non-rigid deformations, the other assuming a rigid obj…
Feature tracking is a fundamental problem in computer vision, with applications in many computer vision tasks, such as visual SLAM and action recognition. This paper introduces a novel multi-body feature tracker that exploits a multi-body rigidity assumption to improve tracking robustness under a general perspective camera model. A conventional approach to addressing this problem would consist of alternating between solving two subtasks: motion segmentation and feature tracking under rigidity constraints for each segment. This approach, however, requires knowing the number of motions, as well …
Position sensitive detectors (PSDs) offer possibility to track single active marker's two (or three) degrees of freedom (DoF) position with a high accuracy, while having a fast response time with high update frequency and low latency, all using a very simple signal processing circuit. However they are not particularly suitable for 6-DoF object pose tracking system due to lack of orientation measurement, limited tracking range, and sensitivity to environmental variation. We propose a novel 6-DoF pose tracking system for a rigid object tracking requiring a single active marker. The proposed syst…

Tracking the full skeletal pose of the hands and fingers is a challenging problem that has a plethora of applications for user interaction. Existing techniques either require wearable hardware, add restrictions to user pose, or require significant computation resources. This research explores a new approach to tracking hands, or any articulated model, by using an augmented rigid body simulation. This allows us to phrase 3D object tracking as a linear complementarity problem with a well-defined solution. Based on a depth sensor's samples, the system generates constraints that limit motion ortho…
We present SplitFusion, a novel dense RGB-D SLAM framework that simultaneously performs tracking and dense reconstruction for both rigid and non-rigid components of the scene. SplitFusion first adopts deep learning based semantic instant segmentation technique to split the scene into rigid or non-rigid surfaces. The split surfaces are independently tracked via rigid or non-rigid ICP and reconstructed through incremental depth map fusion. Experimental results show that the proposed approach can provide not only accurate environment maps but also well-reconstructed non-rigid targets, e.g. the mo…

One of the widespread solutions for non-rigid tracking has a nested-loop structure: with Gauss-Newton to minimize a tracking objective in the outer loop, and Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient (PCG) to solve a sparse linear system in the inner loop. In this paper, we employ learnable optimizations to improve tracking robustness and speed up solver convergence. First, we upgrade the tracking objective by integrating an alignment data term on deep features which are learned end-to-end through CNN. The new tracking objective can capture the global deformation which helps Gauss-Newton to jump over …

We propose an efficient method for non-rigid surface tracking from monocular RGB videos. Given a video and a template mesh, our algorithm sequentially registers the template non-rigidly to each frame. We formulate the per-frame registration as an optimization problem that includes a novel texture term specifically tailored towards tracking objects with uniform texture but fine-scale structure, such as the regular micro-structural patterns of fabric. Our texture term exploits the orientation information in the micro-structures of the objects, e.g., the yarn patterns of fabrics. This enables us …

This paper introduces the first differentiable simulator of event streams, i.e., streams of asynchronous brightness change signals recorded by event cameras. Our differentiable simulator enables non-rigid 3D tracking of deformable objects (such as human hands, isometric surfaces and general watertight meshes) from event streams by leveraging an analysis-by-synthesis principle. So far, event-based tracking and reconstruction of non-rigid objects in 3D, like hands and body, has been either tackled using explicit event trajectories or large-scale datasets. In contrast, our method does not require…

This paper presents a method which can track and 3D reconstruct the non-rigid surface motion of human performance using a moving RGB-D camera. 3D reconstruction of marker-less human performance is a challenging problem due to the large range of articulated motions and considerable non-rigid deformations. Current approaches use local optimization for tracking. These methods need many iterations to converge and may get stuck in local minima during sudden articulated movements. We propose a puppet model-based tracking approach using skeleton prior, which provides a better initialization for track…

We present a novel non-rigid reconstruction method using a moving RGB-D camera. Current approaches use only non-rigid part of the scene and completely ignore the rigid background. Non-rigid parts often lack sufficient geometric and photometric information for tracking large frame-to-frame motion. Our approach uses camera pose estimated from the rigid background for foreground tracking. This enables robust foreground tracking in situations where large frame-to-frame motion occurs. Moreover, we are proposing a multi-scale deformation graph which improves non-rigid tracking without compromising t…
This report is a summary of research conducted on cloth tracking for automated textile manufacturing during a two semester long research course at Georgia Tech. This work was completed in 2009. Advances in current sensing technology such as the Microsoft Kinect would now allow me to relax certain assumptions and generally improve the tracking performance. This is because a major part of my approach described in this paper was to track features in a 2D image and use these to estimate the cloth deformation. Innovations such as the Kinect would improve estimation due to the automatic depth inform…

In this work, we tackle the problem of category-level online pose tracking of objects from point cloud sequences. For the first time, we propose a unified framework that can handle 9DoF pose tracking for novel rigid object instances as well as per-part pose tracking for articulated objects from known categories. Here the 9DoF pose, comprising 6D pose and 3D size, is equivalent to a 3D amodal bounding box representation with free 6D pose. Given the depth point cloud at the current frame and the estimated pose from the last frame, our novel end-to-end pipeline learns to accurately update the pos…
This paper describes the kinematics of the motion tracking of a rigid body using video recording. The novelty of the paper is on the adaptation of the methods and nomenclature used in Computer Vision to those used in Multibody System Dynamics. That way, the equations presented here can be used, for example, for inverse-dynamics multibody simulations driven by the motion tracking of selected bodies. This paper also adapts the well-known Zhang calibration method to the presented nomenclature.

We propose to tackle the problem of multiview 2D/3D rigid registration for intervention via a Point-Of-Interest Network for Tracking and Triangulation ($\text{POINT}^2$). $\text{POINT}^2$ learns to establish 2D point-to-point correspondences between the pre- and intra-intervention images by tracking a set of random POIs. The 3D pose of the pre-intervention volume is then estimated through a triangulation layer. In $\text{POINT}^2$, the unified framework of the POI tracker and the triangulation layer enables learning informative 2D features and estimating 3D pose jointly. In contrast to existin…

We demonstrate the use of shape-from-shading (SfS) to improve both the quality and the robustness of 3D reconstruction of dynamic objects captured by a single camera. Unlike previous approaches that made use of SfS as a post-processing step, we offer a principled integrated approach that solves dynamic object tracking and reconstruction and SfS as a single unified cost function. Moving beyond Lambertian S f S , we propose a general approach that models both specularities and shading while simultaneously tracking and reconstructing general dynamic objects. These correspondences are used as constraints in an as-rigid-as-possible (ARAP) optimization problem. By enabling gradient back-propagation through the weighted non-linear least squares solver, we are able to learn correspondences and confidences in an end-to-end manner such …

We present STaR, a novel method that performs Self-supervised Tracking and Reconstruction of dynamic scenes with rigid motion from multi-view RGB videos without any manual annotation. Recent work has shown that neural networks are surprisingly effective at the task of compressing many views of a scene into a learned function which maps from a viewing ray to an observed radiance value via volume rendering. Unfortunately, these methods lose all their predictive power once any object in the scene has moved. In this work, we explicitly model rigid motion of objects in the context of neural represe…

We propose a spatio-temporal mixing kinematic data estimation method to estimate the shape of the colon with deformations caused by colonoscope insertion. Endoscope tracking or a navigation system that navigates physicians to target positions is needed to reduce such complications as organ perforations. Although many previous methods focused to track bronchoscopes and surgical endoscopes, few number of colonoscope tracking methods were proposed. This is because the colon largely deforms during colonoscope insertion. The deformation causes significant tracking errors. Colon deformation should b…

We introduce Neural Deformation Graphs for globally-consistent deformation tracking and 3D reconstruction of non-rigid objects. Specifically, we implicitly model a deformation graph via a deep neural network. This neural deformation graph does not rely on any object-specific structure and, thus, can be applied to general non-rigid deformation tracking. Our method globally optimizes this neural graph on a given sequence of depth camera observations of a non-rigidly moving object. Based on explicit viewpoint consistency as well as inter-frame graph and surface consistency constraints, the underl…
We present the first real-time system capable of tracking and reconstructing, individually, every visible object in a given scene, without any form of prior on the rigidness of the objects, texture existence, or object category. In contrast with previous methods such as Co-Fusion and MaskFusion that first segment the scene into individual objects and then process each object independently, the proposed method dynamically segments the non-rigid scene as part of the tracking and reconstruction process. When new measurements indicate topology change, reconstructed models are updated in real-time …
Discriminative Correlation Filter (DCF) based methods have shown competitive performance on tracking benchmarks in recent years. Generally, DCF based trackers learn a rigid appearance model of the target. However, this reliance on a single rigid appearance model is insufficient in situations where the target undergoes non-rigid transformations. In this paper, we propose a unified formulation for learning a deformable convolution filter. In our framework, the deformable filter is represented as a linear combination of sub-filters. Both the sub-filter coefficients and their relative locations ar…

Monocular SLAM algorithms perform robustly when observing rigid scenes, however, they fail when the observed scene deforms, for example, in medical endoscopy applications. We present DefSLAM, the first monocular SLAM capable of operating in deforming scenes in real-time. Tensegrity robots, which are composed of compressive elements (rods) and flexible tensile elements (e.g., cables), have a variety of advantages, including flexibility, low weight, and resistance to mechanical impact.
