Based on the equations of state, one can infer the underlying interaction potentials among the black hole molecules in the case of Schwarzschild-AdS and charged AdS black holes. The microscopic molecules with the interaction potential arrange in a specific way to form the mesostructure, whose size is between the macro (black hole system) and the micro (black hole molecules). As a result, the mesostructure leads to the emergence of the macroscopic phase. However, the information about the mesostructure of the AdS black hole are still elusive. In this Letter, the radial distribution function is introduced to probe the mesostructure of the AdS black hole. We find that the mesostructure of the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole behaves as the ideal gas when the temperature is high. Furthermore, we find the mesostructure for the liquid-like (gas-like) phase of the small (large) charged AdS black hole. A sudden change of the mesostructure emerges from the liquid-like phase to the gas-like phase when the charged AdS black hole undergoes a phase transition from the small to large black hole, consistent with the viewpoint that the phase transition of the charged AdS black hole is reminiscent of that of the vdW fluid. This study provides a new angle towards understanding the black hole from its mesostructure.
From black hole perturbation theory, quasi-normal modes (QNMs) in spherically symmetric AdS black hole spacetimes are usually studied with the Horowitz and Hubeny methods [1] by imposing the Dirichlet or vanishing energy flux boundary conditions. This method was constructed using the scalar perturbation case and box-like effective potentials, where the radial equation tends to go to infinity when the radial coordinate approaches infinity. These QNMs can be realized as a different set of solutions from those obtained by the barrier-like effective potentials. However, in some cases the existence…
In the large coupling regime of the 5-dimensional Einstein--Maxwell--Chern--Simons theory, charged and rotating cohomogeneity-1 black holes form sequences of extremal and non-extremal radially excited configurations. These asymptotically global Anti-de Sitter (AdS$_5$) black holes form a discrete set of solutions, characterised by the vanishing of the total angular momenta, or the horizon angular velocity. However, the solutions are not static. In this paper, we study the branch structure that contains these excited states, and its relation with the static Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole. Th…
The decomposition in normal modes of a scalar field conformally coupled to an AdS black hole leads to a Heun equation with simple coefficients thanks to conformal invariance. By applying the Damour-Ruffini method we can relate the critical exponent of the radial part at the horizon surface to the Hawking radiation of scalar particles.
We investigate the numerical stability of accelerated AdS black holes against linear scalar perturbations. In particular, we study the evolution of a probe non-minimally coupled scalar field on Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström AdS black holes with small accelerations by computing the quasinormal modes of the perturbation spectrum. We decompose the scalar field Klein-Gordon equation and study the eigenvalue problem for its angular and radial-temporal parts using different numerical methods. The angular part is written in terms of the Heun solution and expanded through the Frobenius method w…
An analogue model for the $\text{AdS}_2$ spacetime has been recently introduced by Mosna, Pitelli and Richartz [Phys. Rev. D 94, 104065 (2016)] by considering sound waves propagating on a fluid with an ill-defined velocity profile at its source/sink. The wave propagation is then uniquely defined only when one imposes an extra boundary condition at the source/sink (which corresponds to the spatial infinity of $\text{AdS}_2$). Here we show that, once this velocity profile is smoothed out at the source/sink, the need for extra boundary conditions disappears. This, in turn, corresponds to deformat…

Hawking radiation (HR) of massive vector particles from a rotating Warped Anti-de Sitter black hole in 2+1 dimensions (WAdS$_{\text{3}}$BH) is studied in detail. The quantum tunneling approach with the Hamilton-Jacobi method (HJM) is applied in the Proca equation (PE), and we show that the radial function yields the tunneling rate of the outgoing particles. Comparing the result obtained with the Boltzmann factor, we satisfactorily reproduce the Hawking temperature (HT) of the WAdS$_{\text{3}}$BH.
We obtain retarded Green's functions for massless scalar fields in the background of near-extreme, near-horizon rotating charged black holes of five-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity. The radial part of the (separable) massless Klein-Gordon equation in such general black hole backgrounds is Heun's equation, due to the singularity structure associated with the three black hole horizons. On the other hand, we find the scaling limit for the near-extreme, near-horizon background where the radial equation reduces to a Hypergeometric equation whose $SL(2,{\bf R})^2$ symmetry signifies the unde…
In this paper we give some general considerations about circularly symmetric, static space-times in 2+1 dimensions, focusing first on the surprising (at the time) existence of the BTZ black hole solution. We show that BTZ black holes and Schwarzschild black holes in 3+1 dimensions originate from different definitions of a black hole. There are two by-products of this general discussion: (i) we give a new and simple derivation of 2+1 dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space-time; (ii) we present an exact solution to 2+1 dimensional gravity coupled to a self-interacting real scalar field. The spat…
The interior volume of black holes as defined by Christodoulou and Rovelli exhibits many surprising features. For example, it increases with time, even under Hawking evaporation. For some black holes, the interior volume is not even a monotonic increasing function of its area, which means one cannot infer how large a black hole is by just looking from the outside. Such a notion of volume, however, turns out to be useful in the context of holography, as it seems to be dual to the complexity of the boundary field theory. In this study, we investigate the properties of the interior volume of 4-di…
The Weak Gravity Conjecture arises from the requirement that it be possible for all (classically stable) extremal black holes to decay. The ``black hole version'' of the conjecture requires that it should be possible for this to occur through the emission of smaller black holes. We consider this version in the case of extremal AdS$_4$-Kerr-Newman black holes which are stable against a superradiant instability. One finds that the emitted black hole must be rather exotic, having an ``angular horizon'' analogous to the more familiar (radial) horizon.
We study the geodesic motion of massive and massless test particles in the background of equally spinning Myers-Perry-anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes in five dimensions. By adopting a coordinate system that makes manifest the cohomogeneity-1 property of these spacetimes, the equations of motion simplify considerably. This allows us to easily separate the radial motion from the angular part and to obtain solutions for angular trajectories in a compact closed form. For the radial motion we focus our attention on spherical orbits. In particular, we determine the timelike innermost stable circula…
We consider sphere partition functions of TT deformed large N conformal field theories in d=2,3,4,5 and 6 dimensions, computed using the flow equation. These are shown to non-perturbatively match with bulk computations of $AdS_{d+1}$ with a finite radial cut-off. We then demonstrate how the flow equation can be independently derived from a regularization procedure in defining TT operators through a local Callan-Symanzik equation. Finally, we show that the sphere partition functions, modulo bulk-counterterm contributions, can be reproduced from Wheeler-DeWitt wave functions.
We obtained retarded Green's functions for massless scalar fields in the background of near-extreme, near-horizon rotating charged black hole of five-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity in Phys. Rev. D84, 044018 (2011). For general nonextreme black holes, we also derived the radial part of the massless Klein-Gordon equation with zero azimuthal-angle eigenvalues, and showed that it is a general Heun's equation with a regular singularity at each horizon $u_k$ ($k=1,2,3$) and at infinity. We derived explicitly that the residuum of a pole at each $u_k$ is associated with the surface gravity th…

We analyze the Ansatz of separability for Maxwell equations in generically spinning, five-dimensional Kerr-AdS black holes. We find that the parameter μintroduced in a previous work by O. Lunin can be interpreted as apparent singularities of the resulting radial and angular equations. Using isomonodromy deformations, we describe a non-linear symmetry of the system, under which μis tied to the Painlevé VI transcendent. By translating the boundary conditions imposed on the solutions of the equations for quasinormal modes in terms of monodromy data, we find a procedure to fix μand study the behav…
The Newman-Janis algorithm is well known to provide rotating black holes solutions to Einstein's equations from static seeds, through a complexification of a radial and a time coordinates. However, an ambiguity remains for the replacement of the $r^{-1}$ and $r^{-2}$ powers of the radial coordinate. We show here that the two cases are unified by a simple expression which allows its extension to the $r^{2}$ power, characteristic of the de Sitter ($dS$) and anti de Sitter ($AdS$) spacetimes. The formula leads almost automatically to the Kerr and Kerr-Newman-$dS$ and -$AdS$ metrics.
We propose a general method for solving exactly the static field equations of Einstein and Einstein-Maxwell gravity minimally coupled to a scalar field. Our method starts from an ansatz for the scalar field profile, and determines, together with the metric functions, the corresponding form of the scalar self-interaction potential. Using this method we prove a new no-hair theorem about the existence of hairy black-hole and black-brane solutions and derive broad classes of static solutions with radial symmetry of the theory, which may play an important role in applications of the AdS/CFT corresp…
In Lorentzian AdS/CFT there exists a mapping between local bulk operators and nonlocal CFT operators. In global AdS this mapping can be found through use of bulk equations of motion and allows the nonlocal CFT operator to be expressed as a local operator smeared over a range of positions and times. We argue that such a construction is not possible if there are bulk normal modes with exponentially small near boundary imprint. We show that the AdS-Schwarzschild background is such a case, with the horizon introducing modes with angular momentum much larger than frequency, causing them to be trapp…
We study stable circular orbits in spherically symmetric AdS black holes in various dimensions and their limiting innermost stable circular orbits (ISCOs). We provide analytic expressions for their size, angular velocity and angular momentum in a large black hole mass regime. The dual interpretation is in terms of meta-stable states not thermalising in typical thermal scales and whose existence is due to non-perturbative effects on the spatial curvature. Our calculations reproduce the binding energy known in the literature, but also include a binding energy in the radial fluctuations correspon…
We study static black hole solutions with locally spherical horizons coupled to non-Abelian field in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Chern-Simons AdS$_5$ supergravity. They are governed by three parameters associated to the mass, axial torsion and amplitude of the internal soliton, and two ones to the gravitational hair. They describe geometries that can be a global AdS space, naked singularity or a (non-)extremal black hole. We analyze physical properties of two inequivalent asymptotically AdS solutions when the spatial section at radial infinity is either a 3-sphere or a projective 3-space. An important fea…
We revisit the problem of perturbations of Schwarzschild-AdS$_4$ black holes by using a combination of the Martel-Poisson formalism for perturbations of four-dimensional spherically symmetric spacetimes and the Kodama-Ishibashi formalism. We clarify the relationship between both formalisms and express the Brown-York-Balasubramanian-Krauss boundary stress-energy tensor, $\bar{T}_{μν}$, on a finite-$r$ surface purely in terms of the even and odd master functions. Then, on these surfaces we find that the spacelike components of the conservation equation $\bar{\mathcal{D}}^μ\bar{T}_{μν} =0$ are eq…
The nonextremal Kerr black holes have been considered to be holographically dual to two-dimensional (2D) conformal field theories (CFTs). In this paper, we extend the holography to the case of an asymptotically anti--de Sitter (AdS) rotating charged black holes in $f$($T$) gravity, where $f(T) = T + αT^2$, where $α$ is a constant. We find that the scalar wave radial equation at the near-horizon region implies the existence of the 2D conformal symmetries. We note that the $2π$ identification of the azimuthal angle $ϕ$ in the black hole line element, corresponds to a spontaneous breaking of the …
