We analyse the spatial statistics of the 2D gas-phase oxygen abundance distributions in a sample of 219 local galaxies. We introduce a new adaptive binning technique to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of weak lines, which we use to produce well-filled metallicity maps for these galaxies. We show that the two-point correlation functions computed from the metallicity distributions after removing radial gradients are in most cases well described by a simple injection-diffusion model. Fitting the data to this model yields the correlation length $l_{\rm corr}$, which describes the characteristic interstellar medium mixing length scale. We find typical correlation lengths $l_{\rm corr} \sim 1$ kpc, with a strong correlation between $l_{\rm corr}$ and stellar mass, star formation rate, and effective radius, a weak correlation with Hubble type, and significantly elevated values of $l_{\rm corr}$ in interacting or merging galaxies. We show that the trend with star formation rate can be reproduced by a simple transport+feedback model of interstellar medium turbulence at high star formation rate, and plausibly also at low star formation rate if dwarf galaxy winds have large mass-loading factors. We also report the first measurements of the injection width that describes the initial radii over which supernova remnants deposit metals. Inside this radius the metallicity correlation function is not purely the product of a competition between injection and diffusion. We show that this size scale is generally smaller than 60 pc.
Galaxies at low-redshift typically possess negative gas-phase metallicity gradients (centres more metal-rich than their outskirts). Whereas, it is not uncommon to observe positive metallicity gradients in higher-redshift galaxies ($z \gtrsim 0.6$). Bridging these epochs, we present gas-phase metallicity gradients of 84 star-forming galaxies between $0.08 < z < 0.84$. Using the galaxies with reliably determined metallicity gradients, we measure the median metallicity gradient to be negative ($-0.039^{+0.007}_{-0.009}$ dex/kpc). Underlying this, however, is significant scatter: $(8\pm3)\%\ [7]$ …
In the local Universe, globular clusters (GCs) with metallicities $[{\rm Fe}/{\rm H}]<-2.5$ are extremely rare. In this Letter, the close connection between GC formation and galaxy evolution is used to show that this GC metallicity `floor' results from the galaxy mass-metallicity relation of ultra low-luminosity galaxies (ULLGs) at high redshift, where the most metal-poor GCs must have formed. Galaxies with metallicities $[{\rm Fe}/{\rm H}]\lesssim-2.5$ have too low masses to form GCs with initial masses $M_{\rm i}\gtrsim10^5~{\rm M}_\odot$, needed to survive for a Hubble time. This translates…
Metallicity of Active Galactic Nuclei from ultraviolet and optical emission lines-II. Revisiting the $C43$ metallicity calibration and its implications
We present the discovery and spectrophotometric characterization of a large sample of 164 faint ($i_{AB}$ $\sim$ $23$-$25$ mag) star-forming dwarf galaxies (SFDGs) at redshift $0.13$ $\leq z \leq$ $0.88$ selected by the presence of bright optical emission lines in the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey (VUDS). We investigate their integrated physical properties and ionization conditions, which are used to discuss the low-mass end of the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) and other key scaling relations. We use optical VUDS spectra in the COSMOS, VVDS-02h, and ECDF-S fields, as well as deep multiwavelength p…
Measurements of high-velocity clouds' metallicities provide important clues about their origins, and hence on whether they play a role in fueling ongoing star formation in the Galaxy. However, accurate interpretation of these measurements requires compensating for the galactic material that has been mixed into the clouds. In order to determine how much the metallicity changes as a result of this mixing, we have carried out three-dimensional wind-tunnel-like hydrodynamical simulations of an example cloud. Our model cloud is patterned after the Smith Cloud, a particularly well-studied cloud of m…
We incorporate new scale-intelligent models of metal-enriched star formation (\starss) with surrogate models of primordial stellar feedback (\starnet) into the astrophysics simulation code \enzo to analyze the impact of heterogeneous metal enrichment on the first galaxies. Our study includes the earliest generations of stars and the protogalaxies ($10^6 \lesssim M_v/M_\odot \lesssim 10^8$) containing them. We compare results obtained with the new methods to two common paradigms of metallicity initial conditions in simulations: ignoring the metallicity initial condition and assuming a uniform m…

High resolution (R$\sim$22,500) spectra for 400 red clump giants, in four fields within $\rm -4.8^{\circ} \lesssim b \lesssim -3.4^{\circ}$ and $\rm -10^{\circ} \lesssim l \lesssim +10^{\circ}$, were obtained within the GIRAFFE Inner Bulge Survey (GIBS) project. To this sample we added another $\sim$ 400 stars in Baade's Window, observed with the identical instrumental configuration. We constructed the metallicity distributions for the entire sample, as well as for each field individually, in order to investigate the presence of gradients or field-to-field variations in the shape of the distri…

The evolution and lifetimes of thermally pulsating asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) stars suffer from significant uncertainties. In this work, we analyze the numbers and luminosity functions of TP-AGB stars in six quiescent, low metallicity ([Fe/H] $\lesssim -0.86$) galaxies taken from the ANGST sample, using HST photometry in both optical and near-infrared filters. The galaxies contain over 1000 TP-AGB stars (at least 60 per field). We compare the observed TP-AGB luminosity functions and relative numbers of TP-AGB and RGB stars, to models generated from different suites of TP-AGB evolutionary…
Protoplanetary disks are thought to have lifetimes of several million years in the solar neighborhood, but recent observations suggest that the disk lifetimes are shorter in a low metallicity environment. We perform a suite of radiation hydrodynamics simulations of photoevaporation of protoplanetary disks to study the disk structure and its long-term evolution of $\sim 10000$ years, and the metallicity dependence of mass-loss rate. Our simulations follow hydrodynamics, extreme and far ultra-violet radiative transfer, and non-equilibrium chemistry in a self-consistent manner. Dust grain tempera…
We study the relationship between stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR),ionization state, and gas-phase metallicity for a sample of 41 normal star-forming galaxies at $3 \lesssim z \lesssim 3.7$. The gas-phase oxygen abundance, ionization parameter, and electron density of ionized gas are derived from rest-frame optical strong emission lines measured on near-infrared spectra obtained with Keck/MOSFIRE. We remove the effect of these strong emission lines in the broad-band fluxes to compute stellar masses via spectral energy distribution fitting, while the SFR is derived from the dust-correcte…
We present new empirical infrared Period-Luminosity-Metallicity (PLZ) and Period-Wesenheit-Metallicity (PWZ) relations for RR Lyrae based on the latest Gaia EDR3 parallaxes. The relations are provided in the WISE $W1$ and $W2$ bands, as well as in the $W(W1, V - W1)$ and $W(W2, V - W2)$ Wesenheit magnitudes. The relations are calibrated using a very large sample of Galactic halo field RR Lyrae stars with homogeneous spectroscopic [Fe/H] abundances (over 1,000 stars in the $W1$ band), covering a broad range of metallicities ($-2.5 \lesssim \textrm{[Fe/H]} \lesssim 0.0$). We test the performance…
We use accurate estimates of aluminium abundance provided as part of the APOGEE Data Release 17 and Gaia Early Data Release 3 astrometry to select a highly pure sample of stars with metallicity $-1.5\lesssim {\rm [Fe/H]}\lesssim 0.5$ born in-situ in the Milky Way proper. We show that the low-metallicity ([Fe/H]$\lesssim -1.3$) in-situ component that we dub Aurora is kinematically hot with an approximately isotropic velocity ellipsoid and a modest net rotation. Aurora stars exhibit large scatter in metallicity and in a number of element abundance ratios. The median tangential velocity of the in…
We investigate the upper stellar mass limit set by radiative feedback by the forming star with various accretion rates and metallicities. To this end, we numerically solve the structures of both a protostar and its surrounding accretion envelope assuming a spherical symmetric and steady flow. The optical depth of the dust cocoon, a dusty part of the accretion envelope, differs among the direct light from the stellar photosphere and the diffuse light re-emitted as dust thermal emission. As a result, varying the metallicity qualitatively changes the way that the radiative feedback suppresses the…

We predict the evolution of galaxy scaling relationships from cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations, that reproduce the scaling relations of present-day galaxies. Although we do not assume co-evolution between galaxies and black holes a priori, we are able to reproduce the black hole mass--velocity dispersion relation. This relation does not evolve, and black holes actually grow along the relation from significantly less massive seeds than have previously been used. AGN feedback does not very much affect the chemical evolution of our galaxies. In our predictions, the stellar mass--metallici…
We have investigated the metallicity distributions of mono-age stellar populations across the disc of $6 \lesssim R \lesssim 12$\,kpc and $|Z| \lesssim 2$\,kpc using samples selected from the main-sequence turn-off and sub-giant (MSTO-SG) stars targeted by the LAMOST Galactic Spectroscopic surveys. Both the mean values and the profiles of the distributions exhibit significant variations with age and position. We confirm that the oldest ($>11$\,Gyr) stars have nearly flat radial [Fe/H] gradients at all heights above the disc but show negative vertical [Fe/H] gradients. For stars younger than 11…
We present a low metallicity map of the Milky Way consisting of $\sim$111,000 giants with $-3.5 \lesssim$ [Fe/H] $\lesssim -$0.75, based on public photometry from the second data release of the SkyMapper survey. These stars extend out to $\sim$7kpc from the solar neighborhood and cover the main Galactic stellar populations, including the thick disk and the inner halo. Notably, this map can reliably differentiate metallicities down to [Fe/H] $\sim -3.0$, and thus provides an unprecedented view into the ancient, metal-poor Milky Way. Among the more metal-rich stars in our sample ([Fe/H] $> -2.0$…
We quantify the correlations between gas-phase and stellar metallicities and global properties of galaxies, such as stellar mass, halo mass, age and gas fraction, in the Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environments (EAGLE) suite of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. The slope of the correlation between stellar mass and metallicity of star-forming (SF) gas ($M_*-Z_{\rm SF,gas}$ relation) depends somewhat on resolution, with the higher-resolution run reproducing a steeper slope. This simulation predicts a non-zero metallicity evolution, increasing by $\approx 0.5$ dex at $\sim…
The physical origin of the scatter in the relation between galaxy stellar mass and the metallicity of the interstellar medium, i.e. the Mass-Metallicity Relation (MZR), reflects the relative importance of key processes in galaxy evolution. The \eagle cosmological hydrodynamical simulation is used to investigate the correlations between the residuals of the MZR and the residuals of the relations between stellar mass and, respectively, specific inflow, outflow and star formation rate as well as the gas fraction for central galaxies. At low redshift, all these residuals are found to be anti-corre…

We present a search for HI in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of 21 massive ($\langle \log M_\star \rangle \sim 11.4$), luminous red galaxies (LRGs) at $z\sim0.5$. Using UV spectroscopy of QSO sightlines projected within 500 kpc ($\sim R_{vir}$) of these galaxies, we detect HI absorption in 11/21 sightlines, including two partial Lyman limit systems and two Lyman limit systems. The covering factor of $\log N(HI) \ge 16.0$ gas within the virial radius of these LRGs is $f_c(ρ\le R_{vir}) = 0.27^{+0.11}_{-0.10}$, while for optically-thick gas ($\log N(HI) \ge 17.2$) it is $f_c(ρ\le R_{vir}) = 0.1…
We present detailed elemental abundances, radial velocity, and orbital elements for Patchick~125, a recently discovered metal-poor globular cluster (GC) in the direction of the Galactic bulge. Near-infrared high-resolution ($R\sim22,500$) spectra of two members were obtained during the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment at Las Campanas Observatory as part of the sixteenth Data Release (DR 16) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We investigated elemental abundances for four chemical species, including $α$- (Mg, Si), Fe-peak (Fe), and odd-Z (Al) elements. We …
Ultraviolet (UV) observations of local star-forming galaxies have begun to establish an empirical baseline for interpreting the rest-UV spectra of reionization-era galaxies. However, existing high-ionization emission line measurements at $z>6$ ($\mathrm{W_{C IV, 0}} \gtrsim 20$ Å) are uniformly stronger than observed locally ($\mathrm{W_{C IV, 0}} \lesssim 2$ Å), likely due to the relatively high metallicities ($Z/Z_\odot > 0.1$) typically probed by UV surveys of nearby galaxies. We present new HST/COS spectra of six nearby ($z<0.01$) extremely metal-poor galaxies (XMPs, $Z/Z_\odot \lesssim 0.…
We measure the relationship between stellar mass and stellar metallicity, the stellar mass--metallicity relation (MZR), for 1336 star-forming galaxies at $1.6\le z\le3.0$ (<z>=2.2) using rest-frame far-ultraviolet spectra from the zCOSMOS-deep survey. High signal-to-noise composite spectra containing stellar absorption features are fit with population synthesis model spectra of a range of metallicity. We find stellar metallicities, which mostly reflect iron abundances, scaling as $(Z_{Fe,\ast}/Z_{Fe,\odot})=-(0.81\pm0.01)+(0.32+0.03)\log(M_\ast/10^{10}M_\odot)$ across the mass range of $10^9\l…
The bimodal absorption system imaging campaign (BASIC) aims to characterize the galaxy environments of a sample of 36 HI-selected partial Lyman limit systems (pLLSs) and Lyman limit systems (LLSs) in 23 QSO fields at $z \lesssim 1$. These pLLSs/LLSs provide a unique sample of absorbers with unbiased and well-constrained metallicities, allowing us to explore the origins of metal-rich and low-metallicity circumgalactic medium (CGM) at $z<1$. Here we present Keck/KCWI and VLT/MUSE observations of 11 of these QSO fields (19 pLLSs) that we combine with HST/ACS imaging to identify and characterize t…

We combine a catalog of wide binaries constructed from Gaia DR2 with [Fe/H] abundances from wide-field spectroscopic surveys to quantify how the binary fraction varies with metallicity over separations $50 \lesssim s/{\rm AU} \lesssim 50,000$. At a given distance, the completeness of the catalog is independent of metallicity, making it straightforward to constrain intrinsic variation with [Fe/H]. The wide binary fraction is basically constant with [Fe/H] at large separations ($s \gtrsim 250$\,AU) but becomes quite rapidly anti-correlated with [Fe/H] at smaller separations: for $50 < s/{\rm AU}…
The archaeological record of stars in the Milky Way opens a uniquely detailed window into the early formation and assembly of galaxies. Here we use 11,000 main-sequence turn-off stars with well-measured ages, [Fe/H], [$α$/Fe], and orbits from the H3 Survey and Gaia to time the major events in the early Galaxy. Located beyond the Galactic plane, $1\lesssim |Z|/\rm kpc \lesssim4$, this sample contains three chemically distinct groups: a low metallicity population, and low-$α$ and high-$α$ groups at higher metallicity. The age and orbit distributions of these populations show that: 1) the high-$α…
Local Group (LG) galaxies have relatively accurate SFHs and metallicity evolution derived from resolved CMD modeling, and thus offer a unique opportunity to explore the efficacy of estimating stellar mass M$_{\star}$ of real galaxies based on integrated stellar luminosities. Building on the SFHs and metallicity evolution of 40 LG dwarf galaxies, we carried out a comprehensive study of the influence of SFHs, metallicity evolution, and dust extinction on the UV-to-NIR color-$M/L$ (color-log$Υ_{\star}$($λ$)) relations and M$_{\star}$ estimation of local universe galaxies. We find that: The LG gal…
We present the first detection of the [N II] 122 $μ$m and [O III] 52 $μ$m lines for a reionisation-epoch galaxy. Based on these lines and previous [C II] 158 $μ$m and [O III] 88 $μ$m measurements, using two different radiative transfer models of the interstellar medium, we estimate an upper limit on electron density of $\lesssim$ 500 cm$^{-3}$ and a gas-phase metallicity $Z/Z_\odot \sim 1.1 \pm 0.2$ for A1689-zD1, a gravitationally-lensed, dusty galaxy at $z$ = 7.133. Other measurements or indicators of metallicity so far in galaxy interstellar media at $z \gtrsim$ 6 are typically an order of …

Using numerical models for star clusters spanning a wide range in ages and metallicities (Z) we study the masses of binary black holes (BBHs) produced dynamically and merging in the local universe ($z\lesssim0.2$). After taking into account cosmological constraints on star-formation rate and metallicity evolution, which realistically relate merger delay times obtained from models with merger redshifts, we show here for the first time that while old, metal-poor globular clusters can naturally produce merging BBHs with heavier components, as observed in GW150914, lower-mass BBHs like GW151226 ar…
We present high S/N spectroscopy of 15 emission-line galaxies (ELGs) cataloged in the KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS), selected for their possession of high equivalent width [O III] lines. The primary goal of this study was to attempt to derive direct-method ($T_e$) abundances for use in constraining the upper-metallicity branch of the $R_{23}$ relation. The spectra cover the full optical region from [O II]λλ3726,3729 to [S III]λλ9069,9531 and include the measurement of [O III]λ4363 in 13 objects. From these spectra, we determine abundance ratios of helium, nitrogen, oxygen, neo…
We present the results of a new study investigating the relationship between observed Ly$α$ equivalent width ($W_λ$(Ly$α$)) and the metallicity of the ionizing stellar population ($Z_{\star}$) for a sample of $768$ star-forming galaxies at $3 \leq z \leq 5$ drawn from the VANDELS survey. Dividing our sample into quartiles of rest-frame $W_λ$(Ly$α$) across the range $-58 \unicode{xC5} \lesssim$ $W_λ$(Ly$α$) $\lesssim 110 \unicode{xC5}$ we determine $Z_{\star}$ from full spectral fitting of composite far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectra and find a clear anti-correlation between $W_λ$(Ly$α$) and $Z_{\st…
Nearby dwarf galaxies provide a unique laboratory in which to test stellar population models below $Z_\odot/2$. Such tests are particularly important for interpreting the surprising high-ionization UV line emission detected at $z>6$ in recent years. We present HST/COS ultraviolet spectra of ten nearby metal-poor star-forming galaxies selected to show He II emission in SDSS optical spectra. The targets span nearly a dex in gas-phase oxygen abundance ($7.8<12+\log\mathrm{O/H}<8.5$) and present uniformly large specific star formation rates (sSFR $\sim 10^2$ $\mathrm{Gyr}^{-1}$). The UV spectra co…
We present elemental abundances for eight unevolved extremely metal-poor stars with $T_{\rm eff}>5500\,\mathrm{K}$, among which seven have $[\mathrm{Fe/H}]<-3.5$. The sample is selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey / Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SDSS/SEGUE), and our previous high-resolution spectroscopic follow-up with the Subaru Telescope (Aoki et al.). Several methods to derive stellar parameters are compared, and no significant offset in the derived parameters is found in most cases. From an abundance analysis relative to the standard extremely metal-poor…
The [OIII] 88 $μ$m fine structure emission line has been detected into the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) from star-forming galaxies at redshifts $6 < z \lesssim 9$ with ALMA. These measurements provide valuable information regarding the properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the highest redshift galaxies discovered thus far. The [OIII] 88 $μ$m line observations leave, however, a degeneracy between the gas density and metallicity in these systems. Here we quantify the prospects for breaking this degeneracy using future ALMA observations of the [\oiii] 52 $μ$m line. Among the current set o…
To better understand the origin and evolution of the Milky Way bulge, we have conducted a survey of bulge red giant branch and clump stars using the HERMES spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. We targeted ARGOS survey stars with pre-determined bulge memberships, covering the full metallicity distribution function. The spectra have signal-to-noise ratios comparable to, and were analysed using the same methods as the GALAH survey. In this work, we present the survey design, stellar parameters, distribution of metallicity and alpha-element abundances along the minor bulge axis at latit…
We use extensive spectroscopy from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey to investigate the relationships between rest-frame optical emission line equivalent widths ($W$) and a number of galaxy and ISM characteristics for a sample of $1134$ star-forming galaxies at redshifts $1.4\lesssim z\lesssim 3.8$. We examine how the equivalent widths of [OII]$λλ3727, 3730$, H$β$, [OIII]$λλ4960, 5008$, [OIII]$+$H$β$, H$α$, and H$α$+[NII]$λλ6550, 6585$, depend on stellar mass, UV slope, age, star-formation rate (SFR) and specific SFR (sSFR), ionization parameter and excitation conditions (O32 an…
We investigate radiation hardness within a representative sample of 67 nearby (0.02 $\lesssim $z$ \lesssim$0.06) star-forming (SF) galaxies using the integral field spectroscopic data from the MaNGA survey. The softness parameter $η$ = $\frac{O^{+}/O^{2+}}{S^{+}/S^{2+}}$ is sensitive to the spectral energy distribution of the ionizing radiation. We study $η$ via the observable quantity $η\prime$ (=$\frac{[OII]/[OIII]}{[SII][SIII]}$) We analyse the relation between radiation hardness (traced by $η$ and $η\prime$) and diagnostics sensitive to gas-phase metallicity, electron temperature, density,…
We measure abundances of 12 elements (Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) in a sample of 86 metal-poor ($-2 \lesssim \text{[Fe/H]} \lesssim -1$) subgiant stars in the solar neighborhood. Abundances are derived from high-resolution spectra taken with the Potsdam Echelle Polarimetric and Spectroscopic Instrument on the Large Binocular Telescope, modeled using iSpec and MOOG. By carefully quantifying the impact of photon-noise ($< 0.05$ dex for all elements) we robustly measure the intrinsic scatter of abundance ratios. At fixed [Fe/H] the RMS intrinsic scatter in [X/Fe] ranges from 0.…
Does the Fundamental Metallicity Relation Evolve with Redshift? I: The Correlation Between Offsets from the Mass-Metallicity Relation and Star Formation Rate
We investigate the physical conditions of ionized gas in high-z star-forming galaxies using diagnostic diagrams based on the rest-frame optical emission lines. The sample consists of 701 galaxies with an Ha detection at $1.4\lesssim z\lesssim1.7$, from the FMOS-COSMOS survey, that represent the normal star-forming population over the stellar mass range $10^{9.6} \lesssim M_\ast/M_\odot \lesssim 10^{11.6}$ with those at $M_\ast>10^{11}~M_\odot$ being well sampled. We confirm an offset of the average location of star-forming galaxies in the BPT diagram ([OIII]/Hb vs. [NII]/Ha), primarily towards…
