The aim of this work is to answer the question of how much quantum coherence a beam splitter is able to produce. To this end we consider as the variables under study both the amount of coherence of the input states as well as the beam splitter characteristics. We conclude that there is an optimal combination of these factors making the gain of coherence maximum. In addition, the two mode squeezed vacuum arises as the studied state most capable of gaining coherence when passing through a beam splitter. These results are qualitatively equivalent for the the l1-norm of coherence and for the relative entropy of coherence.
The Copenhagen interpretation has been long-lasted, whose core concepts are in the Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and nonlocal correlation of EPR. The second-order anticorrelation on a beam splitter represents these phenomena where it cannot be achieved classically. Here, the anticorrelation of nonclassicality on a beam splitter is interpreted in a purely coherence manner. Unlike a common belief in a particle nature of photons, the anticorrelation roots in pure wave nature of coherence optics, where quantum superposition between two input fields plays a key role. This interpretation may in…
In quantum mechanics, photonic de Broglie waves have been understood as a unique property of quantum mechanics satisfying the complementarity between particle and wave natures of light, where the photonic de Broglie wavelength is inversely proportional to the number of entangled photons acting on a beam splitter. Very recently, the heart of nonclassical feature of photon bunching on a beam splitter was newly interpreted using pure wave nature of coherence optics [arXiv:1911.07174v2], paving a road to unconditionally secured classical key distribution [arXiv:1807.04233v3]. Here, Mach-Zehnder in…
One of the most striking quantum phenomena is photon bunching resulting from coincidently impinging two-indistinguishable photons on a beam splitter (BS) from two different input ports. Such a nonclassical feature has also been observed even between two independent light sources through either coherence optics resulting in phase locking or post-selected measurements such as quantum beating-based gating. Recently, BS physics regarding quantum features has been discussed using pure coherence optics based on phase basis superposition of the BS. Here, we experimentally demonstrate coherent photon …
The double-slit interferometer and the Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with balanced beam splitters are prototypical setups for investigating the quantum wave-particle duality. These setups induced a quantitative association of interferometric visibility (IVI) with the wave aspect of a single quantum system (WAQ). Recently, it was realized that quantum coherence (QC) can be better suited than IVI for quantifying the WAQ in complementarity relations. In this article, we investigate a MZI with biased beam splitters both in the input and the output, and we show that in some cases the IVI is not…
Quantum technologies based on the particle nature of a photon has been progressed over the last several decades, where the fundamental quantum features of entanglement have been tested by Hong-Ou-Mandel-type anticorrelation and Bell-type nonlocal correlation. Recently, mutually exclusive quantum features based on the wave nature of a photon have been investigated to understand the fundamental physics of mysterious quantum correlation, resulting in deterministic and macroscopic quantum technologies. Here, we study the quantum natures of paired photons acting on a beam splitter, where mutual coh…
Attenuating a quantum state using a beam splitter will introduce noise and decoherence. Here we show that heralding techniques can be used to attenuate Schrödinger cat states and squeezed vacuum states without any noise or decoherence [Mičuda et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 180503 (2012)]. Noiseless attenuation also preserves quantum interference effects in nonclassical states such as squeezed vacuum states.
Two-photon intensity correlation of the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) effect has been intensively studied over the last several decades for one of the most interesting quantum features. According to the particle nature of quantum mechanics, indistinguishable photon characteristics interacting on a beam splitter are the prerequisite of the photon bunching phenomenon. Here, a coherence approach based on the wave nature of a photon is used to interpret HOM effect based on entangled photon pairs. As a result, a complete solution of the HOM effect is derived from the coherence approach for the indistinguish…
Photonic de Broglie waves (PBWs) via two-mode entangled photon pair interactions on a beam splitter show a pure quantum feature which cannot be obtained by classical means1-4. Although PBWs have been intensively studied for quantum metrology5-13 and quantum sensing14-25 over the last several decades, their implementation has been limited due to difficulties of high-order NOON state generation4. Recently a coherence version of PBWs, the so-called coherence de Broglie waves (CBWs), has been proposed in a pure classical regime of an asymmetrically coupled Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI)26. Unli…
Over the last several decades, entangled photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down conversion processes in both second-order and third-order nonlinear optical materials have been intensively studied for various quantum features such as Bell inequality violation and anticorrelation. In an interferometric scheme, anticorrelation results from photon bunching based on randomness when entangled photon pairs coincidently impinge on a beam splitter. Compared with post-measurement-based probabilistic confirmation, a coherence version has been recently proposed using the wave nature of phot…

Quantum Gaussian channels play a key role in quantum information theory. In particular, the attenuation and amplification channels are useful to describe noise and decoherence effects on continuous variables systems. They are directly associated to the beam splitter and two-mode squeezing operations, which have operational relevance in quantum protocols with bosonic models. An important property of these channels is that they are Gaussian completely positive maps and the action on a general input state depends on the parameters characterizing the channels. In this work, we study the coherence …
The quantum nature of the state of a bosonic quantum field manifests itself in its entanglement, coherence, or optical nonclassicality which are each known to be resources for quantum computing or metrology. We provide quantitative and computable bounds relating entanglement measures with optical nonclassicality measures. These bounds imply that strongly entangled states must necessarily be strongly optically nonclassical. As an application, we infer strong bounds on the entanglement that can be produced with an optically nonclassical state impinging on a beam splitter. For Gaussian states, we…
In a standard interferometry experiment, one measures the phase difference between two paths by recombining the two wave packets on a beam-splitter. However, it has been recently recognized that the phase can also be estimated via local measurements, by using an ancillary particle in a known superposition state. In this work, we further analyse these protocols for different types of particles (bosons or fermions, charged or uncharged), with a particular emphasis on the subtleties that arise when the phase is due to the coupling to an abelian gauge field. In that case, we show that the measurab…
Essential for building quantum networks over remote independent nodes, the indistinguishability of photons has been extensively studied by observing the coincidence dip in the Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer. However, indistinguishability is not limited to the same type of bosons. For the first time, we hereby observe quantum interference between flying photons and a single quantum of stored atomic coherence (magnon) in an atom-light beam splitter interface. We demonstrate that the Hermiticity of this interface determines the type of quantum interference between photons and magnons. Consequently…
Unitary Fourier transform lies at the core of the multitudinous computational and metrological algorithms. Here we show experimentally how the unitary Fourier transform-based phase estimation protocol, used namely in quantum metrology, can be translated into the classical linear optical framework. The developed setup made of beam splitters, mirrors and phase shifters demonstrates how the classical coherence, similarly to the quantum coherence, poses a resource for obtaining information about the measurable physical quantities. Our study opens route to the reliable implementation of the small-s…
