Photonic de Broglie waves (PBWs) via two-mode entangled photon pair interactions on a beam splitter show a pure quantum feature which cannot be obtained by classical means1-4. Although PBWs have been intensively studied for quantum metrology5-13 and quantum sensing14-25 over the last several decades, their implementation has been limited due to difficulties of high-order NOON state generation4. Recently a coherence version of PBWs, the so-called coherence de Broglie waves (CBWs), has been proposed in a pure classical regime of an asymmetrically coupled Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI)26. Unlike PBWs, the quantumness of CBWs originates from the cascaded quantum superposition of the coupled MZI. Here, the first CBWs observation is presented in a pure classical regime and discussed for its potential applications in coherence quantum metrology to overcome conventional PBWs limited by higher-order entangled photons. To understand the quantum superposition-based nonclassical features in CBWs, various violation tests are also performed, where asymmetrical phase coupling is the key parameter for CBWs.
In quantum mechanics, photonic de Broglie waves have been understood as a unique property of quantum mechanics satisfying the complementarity between particle and wave natures of light, where the photonic de Broglie wavelength is inversely proportional to the number of entangled photons acting on a beam splitter. Very recently, the heart of nonclassical feature of photon bunching on a beam splitter was newly interpreted using pure wave nature of coherence optics [arXiv:1911.07174v2], paving a road to unconditionally secured classical key distribution [arXiv:1807.04233v3]. Here, Mach-Zehnder in…
Recently, a new interpretation of quantum mechanics has been developed for the wave nature of a photon, where determinacy in quantum correlations becomes an inherent property without the violation of quantum mechanics. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a direct proof of the wave natures of quantum correlation for the so-called coherence de Broglie waves (CBWs) using sub-Poisson distributed coherent photon pairs obtained from an attenuated laser. The observed experimental data coincides with the analytic solutions and the numerical calculations. Thus, the CBWs pave a road toward deterministic…
In a Mach-Zenhder interferometer (MZI), the highest precision for a measurement error is given by vacuum fluctuations of quantum mechanics, resulting in a shot noise limit1,2,3,4,5. Because the intensity measurement in an MZI is correlated with the phase difference, the precision measurement (Δn) is coupled with the phase resolution (Δϕ) by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Quantum metrology offers a different solution to this precision measurement using nonclassical light such as squeezed light or higher-order entangled-photon pairs, resulting in a smaller Δϕ for the same Δn3,4,5,6,7,8. H…
An experiment is proposed that permits the observation of the reduced de Broglie wavelengths of two and four-photon wave packets using present technology. It is suggested to use a Mach-Zehnder setup and feed both input ports with light generated by a single non-degenerate down-conversion source. The strong quantum correlations of the light in conjunction with boson-enhancement at the input beam splitter allow to detect a two- and fourfold decrease in the observed de Broglie wavelength with perfect visibility. This allows a reduction of the observed de Broglie wavelength below the wavelength of…
Valentini [arXiv:0811.0810] has recently defended the de Broglie-Bohm pilot-wave version of quantum theory from the claim that it is essentially Everett theory encumbered with the redundant postulation of point particles. In this note, Valentini's central arguments are questioned.
In this article we discuss few new derivations of the so called Born's rule for quantum probability in the context of the pilot wave theory proposed by de Broglie in 1927.
In this paper we study the quantum wave packet and the Feynman_de Broglie_Bohm propagator of the linearized Kostin equation along a classical trajetory.
The Hamilton-Jacobi equation of relativistic quantum mechanics is revisited. The equation is shown to permit solutions in the form of breathers (nondispersive oscillating/spinning solitons), displaying simultaneous particle-like and wave-like behavior adaptable to the properties of the de Broglie clock. Within this formalism the de Broglie wave acquires the meaning of a localized excitation of the classical action function. The problem of quantization in terms of the breathing action function is discussed.
In this paper we study the quantum wave packet and the Feynman-de Broglie-Bohm propagator of the linearized Schuch-Chung-Hartmann equation along a classical trajetory.
In this paper we study the quantum wave packet and the Feynman-de Broglie_Bohm propagator of the linearized Sussmann_Hasse_Albrecht_Kostin_Nassar equation along a classical trajetory
The photonic de Broglie wave, in which an ensemble of $N$ identical photons with wavelength $λ$ reveals $λ/N$ interference fringes, has been known to be a unique feature exhibited by the photon number-path entangled state or the NOON state. Here, we report the observation of the photonic de Broglie wave for a pair of photons, generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion, that are not photon number-path entangled. We also show that the photonic de Broglie wave can even be observed for a pair of photons that are completely separable (i.e., no entanglement in all degrees of freedom) and di…
The dynamics of highly excited radial Rydberg wavepackets is analyzed in terms of de Broglie-Bohm (BB) trajectories. Although the wavepacket evolves along classical motion, the computed BB trajectories are markedly different from the classical dynamics: in particular none of the trajectories initially near the atomic core reach the outer turning point where the wavepacket localizes periodically. The reasons for this behavior, that we suggest to be generic for trajectory-based hidden variable theories, are discussed.
A detailed theoretical investigation of the reflection of an atomic de Broglie wave at an evanescent wave mirror is presented. The classical and the semiclassical descriptions of the reflection process are reviewed, and a full wave-mechanical approach based on the analytical soution of the corresponding Schrödinger equation is presented. The phase shift at reflection is calculated exactly and interpreted in terms of instantaneous reflection of the atom at an effective mirror. Besides the semiclassical regime of reflection describable by the WKB method, a pure quantum regime of reflection is id…
Historically the starting point of wave mechanics is the Planck and Einstein-de Broglie relations for the energy and momentum of a particle, where the momentum is connected to the group velocity of the wave packet. We translate the arguments given by de Broglie to the case of a wave defined on the grid points of a space-time lattice and explore the physical consequences such as integral period, wave length, discrete energy, momentum and rest mass.
An exact, ray-based general treatment is shown to hold for any kind of monochromatic wave feature - including diffraction and interference - described by Helmholtz-like equations, under the coupling action of a dispersive function (which we call "Wave Potential") encoded in the structure itself of the Helmholtz equation. Since the time-independent Schroedinger and Klein-Gordon equations (associating particles of assigned total energy with stationary de Broglie waves) are themselves Helmholtz-like equations, the same general approach is extended to the ray-based dynamics of point-like particles…
The standard relativistic de-Broglie--Bohm theory has the problems of tacyonic solutions and the incorrect non-relativistic limit. In this paper we obtain a relativistic theory, not decomposing the relativistic wave equations but looking for a generalization of non-relativistic Bohmian theory in such a way that the correct non-relativistic limit emerges. In this way we are able to construct a relativistic de-Broglie--Bohm theory both for a single particle and for a many-particle system. At the end, the theory is extended to the curved space-time and the connection with quantum gravity is discu…
The pilot wave interpretation proposed by de Broglie and later by Bohm contains not only a dynamical ontology but also relies on a statistical assumption known as quantum equilibrium. In this work which follows our recent article [1] we develop a Langevin force description of the relaxation process which leads to quantum equilibrium. Based on a application of the Caldera-Leggett model for a thermal bath we show how a Brownian motion leads naturally to quantum relaxation.
We show how Special Relativity sets tight constraints on the form of possible relations that may exist between the four-momentum of a particle and the wave four-vector. More specifically, we demonstrate that there is just one way, according to Special Relativity, to relate the finite energy and momentum of a corpuscle with the characteristics of a plane wave, frequency, wave vector and amplitude: that is by laws of direct proportionality like de Broglie equation and Planck-Einstein equation.
A measurement process is constructed to project an arbitrary two-mode $N$-photon state to a maximally entangled $N$-photon state (the {\it NOON}-state). The result of this projection measurement shows a typical interference fringe with an $N$-photon de Broglie wavelength. For an experimental demonstration, this measurement process is applied to a four-photon superposition state from two perpendicularly oriented type-I parametric down-conversion processes. Generalization to arbitrary $N$-photon states projection measurement can be easily made and may have wide applications in quantum informatio…
We review some aspects of the double solution theory proposed by de Broglie at the beginning of the quantum era (i.e., in the period 1924-28). We specifically analyze and rederive the so called guidance theorem which is a key element of the full theory. We compare the double solution approach to the most known pilot-wave interpretation, also known as de Broglie-Bohm or Bohmian mechanics. We explain why de Broglie rejected the pilot wave interpretation and advocated the double solution. We also discuss some philosophical issues related to difference of strategies between de Broglie on the one s…
We illustrate, using a simple model, that in the usual formulation the time-component of the Klein-Gordon current is not generally positive definite even if one restricts allowed solutions to those with positive frequencies. Since in de Broglie's theory of particle trajectories the particle follows the current this leads to difficulties of interpretation, with the appearance of trajectories which are closed loops in space-time and velocities not limited from above. We show that at least this pathology can be avoided if one uses a covariant extension of the canonical formulation of relativistic…
In this work we develop a time-symmetric soliton theory for quantum particles inspired from works by de Broglie and Bohm. We consider explicitly a non-linear Klein-Gordon theory leading to monopolar oscillating solitons. We show that the theory is able to reproduce the main results of the pilot-wave interpretation for non interacting particles in a external electromagnetic field. In this regime, using the time symmetry of the theory, we are also able to explain quantum entanglement between several solitons and we reproduce the famous pilot-wave nonlocality associated with the de Broglie-Bohm t…
Motivated by recent developments of hydrodynamical quantum mechanical analogs [J. W. M. Bush, Annu. Rev. Fluid Mech. 47, 269-292 (2015)] we provide a relativistic model for a classical particle coupled to a scalar wave-field through a holonomic constraint. In presence of an external Coulomb field we define a regime where the particle is guided by the wave in a way similar to the old de Broglie phase-wave proposal. Moreover, this dualistic mechanical analog of the quantum theory is reminiscent of the double-solution approach suggested by de Broglie in 1927 and is able to reproduce the Bohr-Somm…
Much attention has been drawn to quantum computing and the exponential speed-up in computation the technology would be able to provide. Various claims have been made about what aspect of quantum mechanics causes this speed-up. Formulations of quantum computing have traditionally been made in orthodox (Copenhagen) and sometimes many-worlds quantum mechanics. We will aim to understand quantum computing in terms of de Broglie-Bohm Pilot-Wave Theory by considering different simple systems that may function as a basic quantum computer. We will provide a careful discussion of Pilot-Wave Theory and e…
A de Broglie-Bohm like model of Klein-Gordon equation, that leads to the correct Schrodinger equation in the low-speed limit, is presented. Under this theoretical framework, that affords an interpretation of the quantum potential, the main assumption of the de Broglie-Bohm interpretation--that the local momentum of particles is given by the gradient of the phase of the wave function--is not but approximately correct. Also, the number of particles is not locally conserved. Furthermore, the representation of physical systems through wave functions wont be complete.
A de Broglie-Bohm like model of Dirac equation, that leads to the correct Pauli equations for electrons and positrons in the low-speed limit, is presented. Under this theoretical framework, that affords an interpretation of the quantum potential, the main assumption of the de Broglie-Bohm theory--that the local momentum of particles is given by the gradient of the phase of the wave function--wont be accurate. Also, the number of particles wont be locally conserved. Furthermore, the representation of physical systems through wave functions wont be complete.
This paper is devoted to the analysis of massive particle in general and Newton-Cartan Background in de Broglie-Bohm Theory. We find classical and quantum version of Hamilton-Jacobi equations and find their relations to wave equations. We also discuss fundamental difference between classical and quantum description of these two systems.
We consider a mass-less manifestly covariant {\it linear} Schrödinger equation. First, we show that it possesses a class of non-dispersive soliton solution with finite-size spatio-temporal support inside which the quantum amplitude satisfies the Klein-Gordon equation with finite {\it emergent} mass. We then proceed to interpret the soliton wave function as describing a particle with finite mass, energy and momentum. Inside the spatio-temporal support, the wave function shows spatio-temporal internal vibration with angular frequency and wave number that are determined by the energy-momentum of …
In this thesis we study the de Broglie-Bohm pilot-wave interpretation of quantum theory. We consider the domain of non-relativistic quantum theory, relativistic quantum theory and quantum field theory, and in each domain we consider the possibility of formulating a pilot-wave interpretation. For non-relativistic quantum theory a pilot-wave interpretation in terms of particle beables can readily be formulated. But this interpretation can in general not straightforwardly be generalized to relativistic wave equations. The problems which prevent us from devising a pilot-wave interpretation for rel…
We present here solutions of a non-linear Schroedinger equation in presence of an arbitrary linear external potential. The non-linearity expresses a self-focusing interaction. These solutions are the product of the pilot wave with peaked solitons the velocity of which obeys the guidance equation derived by Louis de Broglie in 1926. The degree of validity of our approximations increases when the size of the soliton decreases and becomes negligible compared to the typical size over which the pilot wave varies. We discuss the possibility to reveal their existence by implementing a humpty-dumpty S…
It is argued that the topological approach to the (anti-)symmetrisation condition for the quantum state of a collection of identical particles, defined in the `reduced' configuration space, is particularly natural from the perspective of de Broglie-Bohm pilot-wave theory.
Recently, the properties of bouncing oil droplets, also known as "walkers", have attracted much attention because they are thought to offer a gateway to a better understanding of quantum behaviour. They constitute indeed a macroscopic realization of wave-particle duality, in the sense that their trajectories are guided by a self-generated surrounding wave. The aim of this paper is to develop a phenomenological theory for the behavior of walkers in terms of de Broglie-Bohm and Nelson dynamics. We study in particular how modifications of the de Broglie pilot-wave theory, à la Nelson, affect the …
The relativistic effects of the integer-spin quantum field theory imply that the wave functions describing a fixed number of particles do not admit the usual probabilistic interpretation. Among several most popular interpretations of quantum mechanics applied to first quantization, the only interpretation for which this fact does not lead to a serious problem, and therefore the only consistent interpretation of first quantization, is the de Broglie-Bohm interpretation.
It is argued that the de Broglie wave is not the wave usually supposed, but the relativistically induced modulation of an underlying carrier wave that moves with the velocity of the particle. In the rest frame of the particle this underlying structure has the form of a standing wave. De Broglie also assumed the existence of this antecedent standing wave, but it would appear that he failed to notice its survival as a carrier wave in the Lorentz transformed wave structure. Identified as a modulation, the de Broglie wave acquires a physically reasonable ontology, evidencing a more natural unity b…
Feynman's laws of quantum dynamics are concisely stated, discussed in comparison with other formulations of quantum mechanics and applied to selected problems in the physical optics of photons and massive particles as well as flavour oscillations. The classical wave theory of light is derived from these laws for the case in which temporal variation of path amplitudes may be neglected, whereas specific experiments, sensitive to the temporal properties of path amplitudes, are suggested. The reflection coefficient of light from the surface of a transparent medium is found to be markedly different…
The standard quantum theory has not taken into account the size of quantum particles, the latter being implicitly treated as material points. The recent interference experiments of Zeilinger [3] with large molecules like fullerenes and the thought experiments of Bozic et al [7] with asymmetrical Young slits make it possible today to take into account the particle size. We present here a complete study of this phenomenon where our simulations show differences between the particles density after the slits and the modulus square of the wave function. Then we propose a crucial experiment that allo…
We propose an interpretative framework for quantum mechanics corresponding to the specifications of Louis de Broglie's double-solution theory. The principle is to decompose the evolution of a quantum system into two wave functions: an external wave function corresponding to the evolution of its center of mass and an internal wave function corresponding to the evolution of its internal variables in the center-of-mass system. Mathematical decomposition is only possible in certain cases because there are many interactions linking these two parts. In addition, these two wave functions will have di…
We experimentally study two-photon coherence in plasmon-assisted transmission with a two-photon Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interferometer. Two collinear photons of identical or orthogonal polarization are simultaneously incident on one optically thick metal film, perforated with a periodic array of subwavelength holes. The de Broglie wavelength of plasmon-assisted transmitted photons is measured, which shows that two photons are re-eradiated by the plasmons and the quantum coherence of biphoton is preserved in the conversion process of transforming biphoton to plasmons and then back to biphoton.
We discuss the main mechanisms generating chaotic behavior of the quantum trajectories in the de Broglie - Bohm picture of quantum mechanics, in systems of two and three degrees of freedom. In the 2D case, chaos is generated via multiple scatterings of the trajectories with one or more `nodal point - X-point complexes'. In the 3D case, these complexes form foliations along `nodal lines' accompanied by `X-lines'. We also identify cases of integrable or partially integrable quantum trajectories. The role of chaos is important in interpreting the dynamical origin of the `quantum relaxation' effec…
Since de Broglie's pilot wave theory was revived by David Bohm in the 1950's, the overwhelming majority of researchers involved in the field have focused on what is nowadays called de Broglie-Bohm dynamics and de Broglie's original double solution program was gradually forgotten. As a result, several of the key concepts in the theory are still rather vague and ill-understood. In the light of the progress achieved over the course of the 90 years that have passed since de Broglie's presentation of his ideas at the Solvay conference of 1927, we reconsider in the present paper the status of the do…
The paper proposes an envelope soliton model of the electron that propagates as a protuberance on a fictitious waveguide, which acts as trajectory. The model is based on de Broglie's original electron wave-particle relativistic theory, and on the observation that the Klein-Gordon equation governs the propagation mode of a common microwave waveguide - with the Schroedinger equation as a low group velocity approximation. This analogy opened for practical physical models, including solitons. In the linear case a conceived corpuscle zigzags within the fictitious waveguide - a zigzagging that resem…
Whence Nonlocality? Removing spooky action at a distance from the de Broglie Bohm pilot-wave theory using a time-symmetric version of de Broglie double solution
The two-slit interference experiment has been modelled a number of times using Gaussian wave-packets and the Bohm-de Broglie causal interpretation. Here we consider the experiment with pinholes instead of slits and model the experiment in terms of two-dimensional Gaussian wave-packets and the Bohm-de Broglie causal interpretation.
The Doppler shift of de Broglie wave is obtained for fermions and massive bosons using the conventional form of Lorentz transformations for momentum and energy of the particles. A formalism is developed to obtain the variation of wave length for de Broglie waves with temperature for individual particles using the classic idea of Wien in a many body Fermi gas or massive Bose gas.
We propose a pedagogical presentation of measurement in the de Broglie-Bohm interpretation. In this heterodox interpretation, the position of a quantum particle exists and is piloted by the phase of the wave function. We show how this position explains determinism and realism in the three most important experiments of quantum measurement: double-slit, Stern-Gerlach and EPR-B. First, we demonstrate the conditions in which the de Broglie-Bohm interpretation can be assumed to be valid through continuity with classical mechanics. Second, we present a numerical simulation of the double-slit experim…
This paper introduces an extension of the de Broglie-Bohm-Bell formulation of quantum mechanics, which includes intrinsic particle degrees of freedom, such as spin, as elements of reality. To evade constraints from the Kochen-Specker theorem the discrete spin values refer to a specific basis -- i.e., a single spin vector orientation for each particle; these spin orientations are, however, not predetermined, but dynamic and guided by the (reduced, spin-only) wave function of the system, which is conditional on the realized location values of the particles. In this way, the unavoidable contextua…
In this work we derive Born's rule from the pilot-wave theory of de Broglie and Bohm. Based on a toy model involving a particle coupled to a environement made of "qubits" (i.e., Bohmian pointers) we show that entanglement together with deterministic chaos lead to a fast relaxation from any statistitical distribution $ρ(x)$ (of finding a particle at point $x$) to the Born probability law $|Ψ(x)|^2$. Our model is discussed in the context of Boltzmann's kinetic theory and we demonstrate a kind of H theorem for the relaxation to the quantum equilibrium regime.
Numerical simulations indicate that the Born rule does not need to be postulated in the de Broglie-Bohm pilot-wave theory, but arises dynamically (relaxation to quantum equilibrium). These simulations were done for a particle in a two-dimensional box whose wave-function obeys the non-relativistic Schroedinger equation and is therefore scalar. The chaotic nature of the de Broglie-Bohm trajectories, thanks to the nodes of the wave-function which act as vortices, is crucial for a fast relaxation to quantum equilibrium. For spinors, we typically do not expect any node. However, in the case of the …
We prove that, under the condition of validity of the Fresnel approximation, diffraction and interference for a wave traveling in the z-direction may be described in terms of the spreading in time of the transverse (x,y)-wave packet. The time required for the evolved wave packet to yield identical patterns as given by standard optics corresponds to the time for the quantum to cross the optical apparatus. This point of view may provide interesting cues in wave mechanics and quantum physics education.
In this article we have studied the propagation of matter waves in Rindler space. We have also developed the formalism to obtained space dependent refractive index for de Broglie waves for the particle and shown the possibility of particle emission from the event horizon of classical black holes, when observed from a uniformly accelerated frame.
We develop a wavepacket approach to the diffraction of charged particles by a thin material target and we use the de Broglie-Bohm quantum trajectories to study various phenomena in this context. We find the form of the separator, i.e.the limit between the domains of prevalence of the ingoing and outgoing quantum flow. The structure of the quantum-mechanical currents in the neighborhood of the separator implies the formation of an array of \emph{quantum vortices} (nodal point - X point complexes). We show how the deformation of the separatior near Bragg angles explains the emergence of a diffra…
Protective measurements which were defined by Aharonov and Vaidman in 1993 played an important role in the discussion about the interpretation of quantum mechanics. In 1999, following an early work by Englert et al., Aharonov et al. wrote an article in which they showed that protective measurements can be used to demonstrate the `surrealism' of Bohmian mechanics. Bohmian mechanics also known as pilot-wave interpretation is certainly the best-known hidden variable interpretation of quantum mechanics. It played a fundamental role in the discovery by Bell of his famous non locality theorem. There…
It is hypothesized that de Broglie's 'matter waves' provide a dynamical basis for Minkowski spacetime in an antisubstantivalist or relational account. The relativity of simultaneity is seen as an effect of the de Broglie oscillation together with a basic relativity postulate, while the dispersion relation from finite rest mass gives rise to the differentiation of spatial and temporal axes. Thus spacetime is seen as not fundamental, but rather as emergent from the quantum level. A result by Solov'ev which demonstrates that time is not an applicable concept at the quantum level is adduced in sup…
