The interaction between carbon nanostructures like quantum dots and radiation can generate different effects inside the nanomaterial, with the use of computational methods such effects can be predicted and optimize the material allowing a desired output. In this work, a theoretical model for pristine graphene quantum dots is studied, allowing to explain the shape and size dependence for the electronic properties and how the bandgap can be tuned with the functionalization of the nanostructure at the edges.
Graphene grown by chemical vapour deposition is transferred on top of flat gold nanoislands and characterized by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Graphene bubbles are formed with lateral dimensions determined by the size and shape of nanoislands. These graphene bubbles can be squeezed during STM imaging using bias voltages of less than 250 mV and tunnelling currents of 1 nA. Similarly, the graphene suspended over gold nanovoids is deflected 4 - 5 nm by the STM tip when imaging at low bias voltages (U = 30 mV). Nanoindentation measurements performed by AFM…
The massless Dirac equation is studied in curved spacetime on the (2+1)-dimensional graphene sheet in time-dependent geometries. Emergent pseudogauge fields are found both in the adiabatic regime and, for high-frequency periodic geometries, in the nonadiabatic regime for a generic Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker metric in Fermi normal coordinates. The former extends the conventionally understood homogeneous pseudogauge field to include weak temporal inhomogeneities. The latter, through the usage of Floquet theory, represents a new class of emergent pseudogauge field and is argued to potent…
Suspended graphene membrane presents a particular structure with fundamental interests and applications in nanomechanics, thermal transport and optoelectronics. Till now, the commonly used geometries are still quite simple and limited to the microscale. We propose here to overcome this problem by making nanostructures in suspended epitaxial bilayer graphene on a large scale and with a large variety of geometries. We also demonstrate a new hybrid thin film of SiC-graphene with an impressive robustness. Since the mechanics and thermal dissipation of a suspended graphene membrane are strongly rel…
The existence of two-inequivalent valleys in the band structure of graphene has motivated the search of mechanisms that allow their separation and control for potential device applications. Among the several schemes proposed in the literature, strain-induced out-of-plane deformations (occurring naturally or intentionally designed in graphene samples), ranks among the best candidates to produce separation of valley currents. Because valley filtering properties in these structures is, however, highly dependent on the type of deformation and setups considered, it is important to identify the rele…
Polyvinyl-pyrrolidone (PVP) loaded with different fractions of dispersed nano-graphene platelets (NGP) were studied by Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy in the frequency range from 1 mHz to 1 MHz. Complex permittivity and dynamic ac conductivity as a function of frequency, temperature and composition were explored. The concentration-dependent insulator-to-conductor transition was traced through dependence of the dc conductivity and the onset of the dispersive ac ac conductivity. The temperature evolution of the dielectric spectra, below and above the fractional threshold exhibits different dyn…
We determine the spin-lifetime anisotropy of spin-polarized carriers in graphene. In contrast to prior approaches, our method does not require large out-of-plane magnetic fields and thus it is reliable for both low- and high-carrier densities. We first determine the in-plane spin lifetime by conventional spin precession measurements with magnetic fields perpendicular to the graphene plane. Then, to evaluate the out-of-plane spin lifetime, we implement spin precession measurements under oblique magnetic fields that generate an out-of-plane spin population. We find that the spin-lifetime anisotr…
High mobility single and few-layer graphene sheets are in many ways attractive as nanoelectronic circuit hosts but lack energy gaps, which are essential to the operation of field-effect transistors. One of the methods used to create gaps in the spectrum of graphene systems is to form long period moire patterns by aligning the graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) substrate lattices. Here, we use planar tunneling devices with thin h-BN barriers to obtain direct and accurate tunneling spectroscopy measurements of the energy gaps in single- and bi-layer graphene-h-BN superlattice structures…
Raman spectroscopic determination of the length, strength, compressibility, Debye temperature, elasticity, and force constant of the C-C bond in graphene
Using a simple setup to bend a flexible substrate, we demonstrate deterministic and reproducible in-situ strain tuning of graphene electronic devices. Central to this method is the full hBN encapsulation of graphene, which preserves the exceptional quality of pristine graphene for transport experiments. In addition, the on-substrate approach allows one to exploit strain effects in the full range of possible sample geometries and at the same time guarantees that changes in the gate capacitance remain negligible during the deformation process. We use Raman spectroscopy to spatially map the strai…
Deformations in graphene systems are central elements in the novel field of {\it straintronics}. Various strain geometries have been proposed to produce specific properties but their experimental realization has been limited. Because strained folds can be engineered on graphene samples on appropriate substrates, we study their effects on graphene transport properties. We show the existence of an enhanced local density of states (LDOS) along the direction of the strained fold that originates from localization of higher energy states, and provides extra conductance channels at lower energies. In…
Based on extensive numerical simulations, accounting for electrostatic interactions and dissipative electron-phonon scattering, we propose experimentally realizable geometries capable of sustaining electronic pre-turbulence in graphene samples. In particular, pre-turbulence is predicted to occur at experimentally attainable values of the Reynolds number between 10 and 50, over a broad spectrum of frequencies between 10 and 100 GHz.
The existence of strong trigonal warping around the K point for the low energy electronic states in multilayer (N$\geq$2) graphene films and graphite is well established. It is responsible for phenomena such as Lifshitz transitions and anisotropic ballistic transport. The absolute orientation of the trigonal warping with respect to the center of the Brillouin zone is however not agreed upon. Here, we use quasiparticle scattering experiments on a gated bilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride heterostructure to settle this disagreement. We compare Fourier transforms of scattering interference m…
We discuss the possibility of getting rectification operation in graphene nanoribbon (GNR). For a system to be a rectifier, it must be physically asymmetric and we induce the asymmetry in GNR by introducing nanopores. The rectification properties are discussed for differently structured nanopores. We find that shape and orientation of the nanopores are critical and sensitive to the degree of current rectification. As the choice of Fermi energy is crucial for obtaining significant current rectification, explicit dependence of Fermi energy on the degree of current rectification is also studied f…
Accurate determination of electron-hole asymmetry and next-nearest neighbor hopping in graphene
We study the discrete energy spectrum of curved graphene sheets in the presence of a magnetic field. The shifting of the Landau levels is determined for complex and realistic geometries of curved graphene sheets. The energy levels follow a similar square root dependence on the energy quantum number as for rippled and flat graphene sheets. The Landau levels are shifted towards lower energies proportionally to the average deformation and the effect is larger compared to a simple uni-axially rippled geometry. Furthermore, the resistivity of wrinkled graphene sheets is calculated for different ave…
The formation of quantum Hall channels inside the bulk of graphene is studied using various contact and gate geometries. p-n junctions are created along the longitudinal direction of samples, and enhanced conductance is observed in the case of bipolar doping due to new conducting channels forming in the bulk, whose position, propagating direction and, in one geometry, coupling to electrodes are determined by the gate-controlled filling factor across the device. This effect could be exploited to probe the behavior and interaction of quantum Hall channels protected against uncontrolled scatterin…
The use of multiple current terminals on millimeter-scale graphene $p-n$ junction devices fabricated with Corbino geometries, or quantum Hall resistance dartboards, have enabled the measurement of several fractional multiples of the quantized Hall resistance at the $ν=2$ plateau ($R_H\approx 12906 Ω$). Experimentally obtained values agreed with corresponding numerical simulations performed with the LTspice circuit simulator. More complicated designs of the quantum Hall resistance dartboard were simulated to establish the potential parameter space within which these Corbino-type devices could o…
The quantum Hall effect is the seminal example of topological protection, as charge carriers are transmitted through one-dimensional edge channels where backscattering is prohibited. Graphene has made its marks as an exceptional platform to reveal new facets of this remarkable property. However, in conventional Hall bar geometries, topological protection of graphene edge channels is found regrettably less robust than in high mobility semi-conductors. Here, we explore graphene quantum Hall regime at the local scale, using a scanning gate microscope. We reveal the detrimental influence of antido…
In recent years there has been significant debate on whether the edge type of graphene nanoflakes (GNF) or graphene quantum dots (GQD) are relevant for their electronic structure, thermal stability and optical properties. Using computer simulations, we have proven that there is a fundamental difference in the calculated absorption spectra between samples of the same shape, similar size but different edge type, namely, armchair or zigzag edges. These can be explained by the presence of electronic structures near the Fermi level which are localized on the edges. These features are also evident f…
Atomically precise graphene nanoribbons are a promising emerging class of designer quantum materials with electronic properties that are tunable by chemical design. However, many challenges remain in the device integration of these materials, especially regarding contacting strategies. We report on the device integration of uniaxially aligned and non-aligned 9-atom wide armchair graphene nanoribbons (9-AGNRs) in a field-effect transistor geometry using electron beam lithography-defined graphene electrodes. This approach yields controlled electrode geometries and enables higher fabrication thro…
Van der Waal's heterostrucutures allow for novel devices such as two-dimensional-to-two-dimensional tunnel devices, exemplified by interlayer tunnel FETs. These devices employ channel/tunnel-barrier/channel geometries. However, during layer-by-layer exfoliation of these multi-layer materials, rotational misalignment is the norm and may substantially affect device characteristics. In this work, by using density functional theory methods, we consider a reduction in tunneling due to weakened coupling across the rotationally misaligned interface between the channel layers and the tunnel barrier. A…

Realizing graphene's promise as an atomically thin and tunable platform for fundamental studies and future applications in quantum transport requires the ability to electrostatically define the geometry of the structure and control the carrier concentration, without compromising the quality of the system. Here, we demonstrate the working principle of a new generation of high quality gate defined graphene samples, where the challenge of doing so in a gapless semiconductor is overcome by using the $ν=0$ insulating state, which emerges at modest applied magnetic fields. In order to verify that th…
We numerically investigate the electronic transport properties of graphene nanoribbons and carbon nanotubes with inter-valley coupling, e.g., in \sqrt{3}N \times \sqrt{3}N and 3N \times 3N superlattices. By taking the \sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3} graphene superlattice as an example, we show that tailoring the bulk graphene superlattice results in rich structural configurations of nanoribbons and nanotubes. After studying the electronic characteristics of the corresponding armchair and zigzag nanoribbon geometries, we find that the linear bands of carbon nanotubes can lead to the Klein tunnelling-l…
Q. Ma et al.[1] recently reported a strong photocurrent associated with charge neutrality in graphene devices with non-uniform geometries, which they interpreted as an intrinsic photoresponse enhanced by the momentum non-relaxing nature of electron-electron collisions at charge neutrality. Here we argue that gradients in charge carrier density give rise to a photothermoelectric effect (PTE) which is strongly peaked around charge neutrality, i.e. at p-n junctions, and such p-n junctions naturally arise at the edges of graphene devices due to fringing capacitance. Using known parameters, the PTE…
