We present a learning-based channel-adaptive joint source and channel coding (CA-JSCC) scheme for wireless image transmission over multipath fading channels. The proposed method is an end-to-end autoencoder architecture with a dual-attention mechanism employing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission. Unlike the previous works, our approach is adaptive to channel-gain and noise-power variations by exploiting the estimated channel state information (CSI). Specifically, with the proposed dual-attention mechanism, our model can learn to map the features and allocate transmission-power resources judiciously based on the estimated CSI. Extensive numerical experiments verify that CA-JSCC achieves state-of-the-art performance among existing JSCC schemes. In addition, CA-JSCC is robust to varying channel conditions and can better exploit the limited channel resources by transmitting critical features over better subchannels.
The sensitivity of the optical wireless communication (OWC) can be effectively improved by employing the highly sensitive single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) arrays. However, the nonlinear distortion introduced by the dead time strongly limits the throughput of the SPAD-based OWC systems. Optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) can be employed in the systems with SPAD arrays to improve the spectral efficiency. In this work, a theoretical performance analysis of SPAD-based OWC system with asymmetrically-clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM) is presented. The impact of the SPAD nonl…
We consider two uniploar OFDM techniques for optical wireless communications: asymmetric clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM) and Flip-OFDM. Both techniques can be used to compensate multipath distortion effects in optical wireless channels. However, ACO-OFDM has been widely studied in the literature, while the performance of Flip-OFDM has never been investigated. In this paper, we conduct the performance analysis of Flip-OFDM and propose additional modification to the original scheme in order to compare the performance of both techniques. Finally, it is shown by simulation that both techniques hav…
This letter presents and analyzes orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based multi-carrier transmission for cell-free massive multi-input multi-output (CFmMIMO) over frequency-selective fading channels. Frequency-domain conjugate beamforming, pilot assignment, and user-specific resource allocation are proposed. CFmMIMO-OFDM is scalable to serve a massive number of users and is flexible to offer diverse data rates for heterogeneous applications.
N-continuous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NC-OFDM) is a promising technique to obtain significant sidelobe suppression for baseband OFDM signals, in future 5G wireless communications. However, the precoder of NC-OFDM usually causes severe interference and high complexity. To reduce the interference and complexity, this paper proposes an improved time-domain N-continuous OFDM (TD-NC-OFDM) by shortening the smooth signal, which is linearly combined by rectangularly pulsed OFDM basis signals truncated by a smooth window. Furthermore, we obtain an asymptotic spectrum analysis of the…
This paper presents a novel algorithm for residual phase estimation in wireless OFDM systems, including the carrier frequency offset (CFO) and the sampling frequency offset (SFO). The subcarriers are partitioned into several regions which exhibit pairwise correlations. The phase increment between successive OFDM blocks is exploited which can be estimated by two estimators with different computational loads. Numerical results of estimation variance are presented. Simulations indicate performance improvement of the proposed technique over several conventional schemes in a multipath channel.
We investigate transmission energy minimization via optimizing wireless relay selection in orthogonal-frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) networks. We take into account the impact of the load of cells on transmission energy. We prove the NP-hardness of the energy-aware wireless relay selection problem. To tackle the computational complexity, a partial optimality condition is derived for providing insights in respect of designing an effective and efficient algorithm. Numerical results show that the resulting algorithm achieves high energy performance.
Multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (MIMO-OFDM-IM) is a novel multicarrier transmission technique which has been proposed recently as an alternative to classical MIMO-OFDM. In this paper, we shed light on the implementation and error performance analysis of the MIMO-OFDM-IM scheme for next generation 5G wireless networks. Maximum likelihood (ML), near-ML, simple minimum mean square …
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the use of single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) in optical wireless communication (OWC). SPAD operates in the Geiger mode and can act as a photon counting receiver obviating the need for a transimpedance amplifier (TIA). Although a SPAD receiver can provide higher sensitivity compared to the traditional linear photodetectors, it suffers from the dead-time-induced nonlinearity. To improve the data rates of SPAD-based OWC systems, optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) can be employed. This paper provides a comprehensive th…
This work quantifies, for the first time, intersymbol and intercarrier interferences induced by very dispersive channels in OFDM systems. The resulting achievable data rate for \wam{suboptimal} OFDM transmissions is derived based on the computation of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio for arbitrary length finite duration channel impulse responses. Simulation results point to significant differences between data rates obtained via conventional formulations, for which interferences are supposed to be limited to two or three blocks, versus the data rates considering the actual channel dispe…
Spectrally and energy efficient orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (SEE-OFDM) is an optical OFDM technique based on combining multiple asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM) signals into one OFDM signal. By summing different components together, SEE-OFDM can achieve the same spectral efficiency as DC-biased optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM) without an energy-inefficient DC-bias. This paper introduces multiple methods for decoding a SEE-OFDM symbol and shows that an iterative decoder with hard decisions gives the best performance. Being a multi-component format, different energy allocatio…
We present a deep learning based joint source channel coding (JSCC) scheme for wireless image transmission over multipath fading channels with non-linear signal clipping. The proposed encoder and decoder use convolutional neural networks (CNN) and directly map the source images to complex-valued baseband samples for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission. The proposed model-driven machine learning approach eliminates the need for separate source and channel coding while integrating an OFDM datapath to cope with multipath fading channels. The end-to-end JSCC communicatio…
The high peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) degrades the performance in optical wireless communication systems. This paper proposes a modified asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACOOFDM) with low PAPR via introducing a recoverable upper-clipping (RoC) procedure. Although some information is clipped by a predetermined peak threshold, the clipped error information is kept and repositioned in our proposed scheme, which is named RoC-ACO-OFDM, instead of simply being dropped in conventional schemes. The proposed method makes full use of the spe…
Asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) is theoretically more power efficient but less spectrally efficient than DC-bias OFDM (DCO-OFDM), with less power allocating to the informationless bias component by only using odd index sub-carriers. Layered/Enhanced asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (L/E-ACO-OFDM) has been proposed to increase the spectral efficiency of ACO-OFDM. In this letter, we experimentally demonstrate a 30-km single mode fiber transmission using L/E-ACO-OFDM at 4.375 Gbits/s. Using a Volterra fi…
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a modulation technique susceptible to source, channel and amplifier nonlinearities because of its high peak-to-average ratio (PAPR). The distortion gets worse by increasing the average power of the OFDM signals since larger portion of the signals are affected by nonlinearity. In this paper we introduce Hadamard coded modulation (HCM) that uses the fast Walsh-Hadamard transform (FWHT) to modulate data as an alternative technique to OFDM in direct-detection wireless optical systems. This technique is shown to have a better performance for high…
Visible light communications (VLC) have recently attracted a growing interest and can be a potential solution to realize indoor wireless communication with high bandwidth capacity for RF-restricted environments such as airplanes and hospitals. Optical based orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems have been proposed in the literature to combat multipath distortion and intersymbol interference (ISI) caused by multipath signal propagation. In this paper, we present a robust timing synchronization scheme suitable for asymmetrically clipped (AC) OFDM based optical intensity modula…
In this paper, we derive an asymptotic closed--form expression for the error bound on extrapolation of doubly selective mobile MIMO wireless channels. The bound shows the relationship between the prediction error and system design parameters such as bandwidth, number of antenna elements, and number of frequency and temporal pilots, thereby providing useful insights into the effects of these parameters on prediction performance. Numerical simulations show that the asymptotic bound provides a good approximation to previously derived bounds while eliminating the need for repeated computation and …
An estimation method of Radio Frequency fingerprint (RFF) based on the physical hardware properties of the nonlinearity and in-phase and quadrature (IQ) imbalance of the transmitter is proposed for the authentication of wireless orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) devices. Firstly, the parameters of the nonlinearity of the transmitter and finite impulse response (FIR) of the wireless multipath channel are estimated with a Hammerstein system parameter separation technique. Secondly, the best IQ imbalance parameter combination estimation is obtained with a searching algorithm and t…
Distinction of OFDM signals from single carrier signals is highly important for adaptive receiver algorithms and signal identification applications. OFDM signals exhibit Gaussian characteristics in time domain and fourth order cumulants of Gaussian distributed signals vanish in contrary to the cumulants of other signals. Thus fourth order cumulants can be utilized for OFDM signal identification. In this paper, first, formulations of the estimates of the fourth order cumulants for OFDM signals are provided. Then it is shown these estimates are affected significantly from the wireless channel im…
In this paper, we study the Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) in a Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) two-user Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) Interference Channel (IFC). We assume that the transmitters are non-cooperative and have perfect knowledge of the local Channel State Information (CSI). We show that the necessary condition for the optimal transmission strategy at high SNR is for the energy transmitter to transmit its signal by allocating its transmit power on a single subcarrier. Accordingly, we propose a one-subcarrier selection method for t…

This paper investigates the system achievable rate and optimization for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system with an energy harvesting (EH) relay. Firstly we propose a time switchingbased relaying (TSR) protocol to enable the simultaneous information processing and energy harvesting at the relay. Then, we discuss its achievable rate performance theoretically and formulated an optimization problem to maximize the system achievable rate. As the problem is difficult to solve, we design an Augmented Lagrangian Penalty Function (ALPF) me…
Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is a challenge for high-data-rate optical-communication systems. More researches are desirable for impairments that is induced by PMD in high-speed optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission system. The simulation results show that, compared…
We consider performance enhancement of asymmetrically-clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) and related optical OFDM schemes, which are variations of OFDM in intensity-modulated optical wireless communications. Unlike most existing studies on specific designs of improved receivers, this paper investigates information theoretic limits of all possible receivers. For independent and identically distributed complex Gaussian inputs, we obtain an exact characterization of information rate of ACO-OFDM with improved receivers for all SNRs. It is proved that the high-SNR…
The provision of both wireless and wired services in the optical access domain will be an important function for future passive optical networks (PON). With the emergence of 5th generation (5G) mobile communications, a move toward a dense deployment of small cell antenna sites, in conjunction with a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) architecture, is foreseen. This type of network architecture greatly increases the requirement for high capacity mobile fronthaul and backhaul links. An efficient way of achieving such connectivity is to make use of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) PON infras…
Single antenna vector OFDM (V-OFDM) system has been proposed and investigated in the past. It contains the conventional OFDM and the single carrier frequency domain equalizer (SC-FDE) as two special cases and is flexible to choose any number of symbols in intersymbol interference (ISI) by choosing a proper vector size. In this paper, we develop cyclic delay diversity (CDD) transmission for V-OFDM when there are multiple transmit antennas (CDD-V-OFDM). Similar to CDD-OFDM systems, CDD-V-OFDM can also collect both spatial and multipath diversities. Since V-OFDM first converts a single input sing…
In this study, we propose a framework for chirp-based communications by exploiting discrete Fourier transform-spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-s-OFDM). We show that a well-designed frequency-domain spectral shaping (FDSS) filter for DFT-s-OFDM can convert its single-carrier nature to a linear combination of chirps circularly translated in the time domain. Also, by exploiting the properties of the Fourier series and Bessel function of the first kind, we analytically obtain the FDSS filter for an arbitrary chirp. We theoretically show that the chirps with low ripples in the…

In particular, we consider a power splitting receiver which dynamically splits the received power into two power streams for information decoding and energy harvesting. We design power allocation algorithms maximizing the spectral efficiency (bit/s/Hz) of data transmission. In particular, the algorithm design is formul…
This paper investigates an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based wireless powered communication system, where one user harvests energy from an energy access point (EAP) to power its information transmission to a data access point (DAP). The channels from the EAP to the user, i.e., the wireless energy transfer (WET) link, and from the user to the DAP, i.e., the wireless information transfer (WIT) link, vary over both time slots and sub-channels (SCs) in general. To avoid interference at DAP, WET and WIT are scheduled over orthogonal SCs at any slot. Our objective is to maximiz…
5G cellular communications promise to deliver the gigabit experience to mobile users, with a capacity increase of up to three orders of magnitude with respect to current LTE systems. There is widespread agreement that such an ambitious goal will be realized through a combination of innovative techniques involving different network layers. At the physical layer, the OFDM modulation format, along with its multiple-access strategy OFDMA, is not taken for granted, and several alternatives promising larger values of spectral efficiency are being considered. This paper provides a review of some modu…
Large-scale antenna (LSA) or massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) has gained a lot of attention due to its potential to significantly improve system throughput. As a natural evolution from traditional MIMO-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), LSA has been combined with OFDM to deal with frequency selectivity of wireless channels in most existing works. As an alternative approach, single-carrier (SC) has also been proposed for LSA systems due to its low implementation complexity. In this article, a comprehensive comparison between LSA-OFDM and LSA-SC is presented, which i…
For future wireless communication technologies, an increase in capabilities such as throughput is strongly expected. Transmission in the sub-THz bands (>90 GHz) seems to be the potential solution to meet the ever-increasing capacity demands due to the large unexploited bandwidth. Oscillators used at these frequencies generate phase noise that induces critical distortions in the signal that must be addressed. The correlated nature of PN makes it difficult to overcome. Nowadays, there is a growing interest in considering the extension of multicarrier based waveforms of the 5G new radio for trans…
This article presents our initial results in deep learning for channel estimation and signal detection in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). OFDM has been widely adopted in wireless broadband communications to combat frequency-selective fading in wireless channels. In this article, we take advantage of deep learning in handling wireless OFDM channels in an end-to-end approach. Different from existing OFDM receivers that first estimate CSI explicitly and then detect/recover the transmitted symbols with the estimated CSI, our deep learning based approach estimates CSI implicitly …
We investigate the physical layer security of wireless single-input single-output orthogonal-division multiplexing (OFDM) when a transmitter, which we refer to as Alice, sends her information to a receiver, which we refer to as Bob, in the presence of an eavesdropping node, Eve. To prevent information leakage, Alice sends an artificial-noise (AN) signal superimposed over her information signal. We investigate the impact of the channel delay spread, OFDM cyclic prefix, information/AN power allocation, and information and AN precoders design on the achievable average secrecy rate. The existing linear frequency modulated (LFM) (or step frequency) and random noise synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems may correspond to the frequency hopping (FH) and direct sequence (DS) spread spectrum systems in the past second and third generation wireless communications. Similar to the current and future wireless communications generations, in this paper, we propose OFDM SAR imaging, where a sufficient cyclic prefix (CP) is added to each OFDM pulse. The sufficient CP insertion converts an inter-symbol interference (ISI) channel from multipaths into multiple ISI-free subchannels as the…

In particular, the problem formulation takes into account the minimum required system data rate, heterogeneous minimum required power transfers to the users, and the circuit power consumption. Subsequently, by exploiting the meth…
Radio Frequency fingerprints (RFF) authentication is one of the methods for the physical-layer information security, which uses the hardware characteristics of the transmitter to identify its real identity. In order to improve the performance of RFF based on preamble with fixed duration, a nonlinear RFF authentication method based on payload symbols is proposed for the wireless OFDM devices with the bit mapping scheme of QPSK. The communication system is modeled as a Hammerstein system containing the nonlinear transmitter and wireless multipath fading channel. A parameter separation technique …
This paper presents a novel efficient receiver design for wireless communication systems that incorporate orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission. The proposed receiver does not require channel estimation or equalization to perform coherent data detection. Instead, channel estimation, equalization, and data detection are combined into a single operation, and hence, the detector is denoted as a direct data detector (D^{3}). The performance of the proposed system is thoroughly analyzed theoretically in terms of bit error rate (BER), and validated by Monte Carlo simulations…

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) is a novel multicarrier transmission technique which has been proposed as an alternative to classical OFDM. The main idea of OFDM-IM is the use of the indices of the active subcarriers in an OFDM system as an additional source of information. In this work, we propose multiple-input multiple-output OFDM-IM (MIMO-OFDM-IM) scheme by combining OFDM-IM and MIMO transmission techniques. This paper investigates the simultaneous wireless information and energy transfer for the non-regenerative multipleinput multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) relaying system. By considering two practical receiver architectures, we present two protocols, time switchingbased relaying (TSR) and power splitting-based relaying (PSR). To explore the system performance limit, we formulate two optimization problems to maximize the end-to-end achievable information rate with the full channel state information (CSI) assumption. Since both problems are non-convex and hav…

We study the design of power allocation algorithms maximizing the energy efficiency of data transmission (bit/Joule delivered to the receiver). In particular, the algorithm design is formulated as a high-dimensional non-convex optimization problem which takes into account the circuit power consumption, the minimum required da…
We investigate the physical-layer security of indoor hybrid parallel power-line/wireless orthogonal-frequency division-multiplexing (OFDM) communication systems. We propose an artificial-noise (AN) aided scheme to enhance the system's security in the presence of an eavesdropper by exploiting the decoupled nature of the power-line and wireless communication media. The proposed scheme does not require the instantaneous channel state information of the eavesdropper's links to be known at the legitimate nodes. In our proposed scheme, the legitimate transmitter (Alice) and the legitimate receiver (…
In this paper, we study the optimal design for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in downlink multiuser orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. For information transmission, we consider two types of multiple access schemes, namely, time division multiple access (TDMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA). At the receiver side, due to the practical limitation that circuits for harvesting energy from radio signals are not yet able to decode the carried information directly, each user applies either time switching (TS) or power spl…
Recently, we have developed a PHYsical layer Phase Challenge-Response Authentication Scheme (PHY-PCRAS) for independent multicarrier transmission. Then, we address various practica…
Photon counting detectors such as single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) arrays can be utilized to improve the sensitivity of optical wireless communication (OWC) systems. However, the achievable data rate of SPAD-based OWC systems is strongly limited by the nonlinearity induced by SPAD dead time. In this work, the performance of SPAD-based OWC system with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is investigated and compared with that of on-off keying (OOK). We employ nonlinear equalization, peak-to-average power ratio optimization by adjusting the OFDM clipping level, and adaptive bit …
Two-way relaying can considerably improve spectral efficiency in relay-assisted bidirectional communications. However, the benefits and flexible structure of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based two-way decode-and-forward (DF) relay systems is much less exploited. Moreover, most of existing works have not considered quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning for two-way relaying. In this paper, we consider the OFDM-based bidirectional transmission where a pair of users exchange information with or without the assistance of a single DF relay. Each user can communicate with the oth…
Capacity is the eternal pursuit for communication systems due to the overwhelming demand of bandwidth hungry applications. As the backbone infrastructure of modern communication networks, the optical fiber transmission system undergoes a significant capacity growth over decades by exploiting available physical dimensions (time, frequency, quadrature, polarization and space) of the optical carrier for multiplexing. For each dimension, stringent orthogonality must be guaranteed for perfect separation of independent multiplexed signals. To catch up with the ever-increasing capacity requirement, i…
We consider spectrally-precoded OFDM waveforms for 5G wideband transmission in sub-6GHz band. In this densely packed spectrum, a low out-of-band (OOB) waveform is a critical 5G component to achieve the promised high spectral efficiency. By precoding data symbols before OFDM modulation, it is possible to achieve extremely low out-of-band emission with very sharp spectrum transition enabling an efficient and flexible usage of frequency resources. Spectrally-precoded OFDM shows promising results for reaching 5G targets in high-data rate enhanced mobile broadband and ultra-reliable low-latency com…
Next generation wireless networks are expected to provide much higher data throughput and reliable connections for a far larger number of wireless service subscribers and machine-type nodes, which result in increasingly stringent requirements of spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) stands out as a promising solution to satisfy the SE requirement with a reasonable increase in system complexity. However, the EE of OFDM-IM is still required to be enhanced. Moreover, diversity gain is hardly harvested in OFD…
The effective PAPR of the transmit signal is the standard metric to capture the effect of nonlinear distortion in OFDM transmission. A common rule of thumb is the log$(N)$ barrier where $N$ is the number of subcarriers which has been theoretically analyzed by many authors. Recently, new alternative metrics have been proposed in practice leading potentially to different system design rules which are theoretically analyzed in this paper. One of the main findings is that, most surprisingly, the log$(N)$ barrier turns out to be much too conservative: e.g. for the so-called amplifier-oriented metri…
