Large-scale antenna (LSA) or massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) has gained a lot of attention due to its potential to significantly improve system throughput. As a natural evolution from traditional MIMO-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), LSA has been combined with OFDM to deal with frequency selectivity of wireless channels in most existing works. As an alternative approach, single-carrier (SC) has also been proposed for LSA systems due to its low implementation complexity. In this article, a comprehensive comparison between LSA-OFDM and LSA-SC is presented, which is of interest to the waveform design for the next generation wireless systems.
Large-scale antenna (LSA) has gained a lot of attention recently since it can significantly improve the performance of wireless systems. Similar to multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) or MIMO-OFDM, LSA can be also combined with OFDM to deal with frequency selectivity in wireless channels. However, such combination suffers from substantially increased complexity proportional to the number of antennas in LSA systems. For the conventional implementation of LSA-OFDM, the number of inverse fast Fourier transforms (IFFTs) increases with the antenna…
We propose a space-frequency (SF) block coding scheme for a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system using antennas with reconfigurable radiation patterns. In this system, each element of the antenna array at the transmitter side is assumed to be reconfigurable so that it can independently change the physical characteristics of its radiation pattern. The proposed block code is full rate and benefits from spatial, frequency, and reconfigurable radiation pattern state diversity over frequency-selective fading channels. We provide simulation r…
Single antenna vector OFDM (V-OFDM) system has been proposed and investigated in the past. It contains the conventional OFDM and the single carrier frequency domain equalizer (SC-FDE) as two special cases and is flexible to choose any number of symbols in intersymbol interference (ISI) by choosing a proper vector size. In this paper, we develop cyclic delay diversity (CDD) transmission for V-OFDM when there are multiple transmit antennas (CDD-V-OFDM). Similar to CDD-OFDM systems, CDD-V-OFDM can also collect both spatial and multipath diversities. Since V-OFDM first converts a single input sing…
This paper presents a novel algorithm for residual phase estimation in wireless OFDM systems, including the carrier frequency offset (CFO) and the sampling frequency offset (SFO). The subcarriers are partitioned into several regions which exhibit pairwise correlations. The phase increment between successive OFDM blocks is exploited which can be estimated by two estimators with different computational loads. Numerical results of estimation variance are presented. Simulations indicate performance improvement of the proposed technique over several conventional schemes in a multipath channel.
Multiple input multiple output techniques are considered attractive for future wireless communication systems, due to the continuing demand for high data rates, spectral efficiency, suppress interference ability and robustness of transmission. MIMO-OFDM is very helpful to transmit high data rate in wireless transmission and provides good maximum system capacity by getting the advantages of both MIMO and OFDM. The main problem in this system is that increase in number of transmit and receive antennas lead to hardware complexity. To tackle this issue, an effective optimal transmit antenna subset…
In this paper, resource allocation for multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) downlink networks with large numbers of base station antennas is studied. Assuming perfect channel state information at the transmitter, the resource allocation algorithm design is modeled as a non-convex optimization problem which takes into account the joint power consumption of the power amplifiers, antenna unit, and signal processing circuit unit. Subsequently, by exploiting the law of large numbers and dual decomposition, an efficient suboptimal iterative resource a…
Large-scale antenna (LSA) has gained a lot of attention due to its great potential to significantly improve system throughput. In most existing works on LSA systems, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is presumed to deal with frequency selectivity of wireless channels. Although LSA-OFDM is a natural evolution from multiple-input multiple-output OFDM (MIMO-OFDM), the drawbacks of LSA-OFDM are inevitable, especially when used for the uplink. In this paper, we investigate single-carrier (SC) modulation for the uplink transmission in LSA systems based on a novel waveform recovery th…
We compare four open-loop transmit diversity schemes in a coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system with four transmit antennas, namely cyclic delay diversity (CDD), Space-Time Block Code (STBC, Alamouti code is used) with CDD, Quasi-Orthogonal STBC (QO-STBC) and Minimum-Decoding-Complexity QOSTBC (MDC-QOSTBC). We show that in a coded system with low code rate, a scheme with spatial transmit diversity of second order can achieve similar performance to that with spatial transmit diversity of fourth order due to the additional diversity provided by the phase shift diversity …
This letter investigates performance enhancement by the concept of multi-carrier index keying in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. For the performance evaluation, a tight closed-form approximation of the bit error rate (BER) is derived introducing the expression for the number of bit errors occurring in both the index domain and the complex domain, in the presence of both imperfect and perfect detection of active multi-carrier indices. The accuracy of the derived BER results for various cases are validated using simulations, which can provide accuracy within 1 dB at fa…
Due to its time-varying nature, oscillator phase noise can significantly degrade the performance of channel estimation, carrier recovery, and data detection blocks in high-speed wireless communication systems. In this paper, we analyze joint channel, \emph{carrier frequency offset (CFO)}, and phase noise estimation plus data detection in \emph{orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)} relay systems. To achieve this goal, a detailed transmission framework involving both training and data symbols is presented. In the data transmission phase, a comb-type OFDM symbol consisting of both pi…
We compare the maximum achievable rates in single-carrier and OFDM modulation schemes, under the practical assumptions of i.i.d. finite alphabet inputs and linear ISI with additive Gaussian noise. We show that the Shamai-Laroia approximation serves as a bridge between the two rates: while it is well known that this approximation is often a lower bound on the single-carrier achievable rate, it is revealed to also essentially upper bound the OFDM achievable rate. We apply Information-Estimation relations in order to rigorously establish this result for both general input distributions and to sha…

In this letter, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance is analyzed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based amplify-and-forward (AF) relay systems in the presence of carrier frequency offset (CFO) for fading channels. The SNR expression is derived under one-relay-node scenario, and is further extended to multiple-relay-node scenario. Analytical results show that the SNR is quite sensitive to CFO and the sensitivity of the SNR to CFO is mainly determined by the power of the corresponding link channel and gain factor.
In this correspondence, we propose a new receiver design for high-mobility orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) downlink transmissions with a large-scale antenna array. The downlink signal experiences the challenging fast time-varying propagation channel. The time-varying nature originates from the multiple carrier frequency offsets (CFOs) due to the transceiver oscillator frequency offset (OFO) and multiple Doppler shifts. Let the received signal first go through a carefully designed beamforming network, which could separate multiple CFOs in the spatial domain with sufficient num…
Active Constellation Extension (ACE) is one of techniques introduced for Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) reduction for OFDM systems. In this technique, the constellation points are extended such that the PAPR is minimized but the minimum distance of the constellation points does not decrease. In this paper, an iterative ACE method is extended to spatially encoded OFDM systems. The proposed methods are such that the PAPR is reduced simultaneously at all antennas, while the spatial encoding relationships still hold. It will be shown that the original ACE method can be employed before Space Ti…
Cyclic prefix (CP) based MIMO-OFDM radar has been recently proposed for distributed transmit antennas, where there is no inter-range-cell interference (IRCI). It can collect full spatial diversity and each transmitter transmits signals with the same frequency band, i.e., the range resolution is not reduced. However, it needs to transmit multiple OFDM pulses consecutively to obtain range profiles for a single swath, which may be too long in time for a reasonable swath width. In this letter, we propose a CP based MIMO-OFDM synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system, where each transmitter transmits o…
Downlink precoding is considered for multi-path multi-input single-output channels where the base station uses orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing and low-resolution signaling. A quantized coordinate minimization (QCM) algorithm is proposed and its performance is compared to other precoding algorithms including squared infinity-norm relaxation (SQUID), multi-antenna greedy iterative quantization (MAGIQ), and maximum safety margin precoding. MAGIQ and QCM achieve the highest information rates and QCM has the lowest complexity measured in the number of multiplications. The information rat…
In this letter, we propose a computationally efficient method for joint selection of cancellation carriers (CCs) and calculation of their values minimizing the out-of-band (OOB) power in non-contiguous (NC-) OFDM transmission. The proposed new CCs selection method achieves higher OOB power attenuation than algorithms known from literature as well as noticable reception performance improvement.
In orthogonal-frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, carrier and sampling frequency offsets (CFO and SFO, respectively) can destroy the orthogonality of the subcarriers and degrade system performance. In the literature, Nguyen-Le, Le-Ngoc, and Ko proposed a simple maximum-likelihood (ML) scheme using two long training symbols for estimating the initial CFO and SFO of a recursive least-squares (RLS) estimation scheme. However, the results of Nguyen-Le's ML estimation show poor performance relative to the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB). In this paper, we extend Moose's CFO estimation algorithm …
In this paper we propose a novel form of clipping mitigation in OFDM using compressive sensing that completely avoids tone reservation and hence rate loss for this purpose. The method builds on selecting the most reliable perturbations from the constellation lattice upon decoding at the receiver, and performs compressive sensing over these observations in order to completely recover the temporally sparse nonlinear distortion. As such, the method provides a unique practical solution to the problem of initial erroneous decoding decisions in iterative ML methods, offering both the ability to augm…
The combination of orthogonal frequency modulation (OFDM) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems plays an important role in modern communication systems. In order to meet the growing throughput demands, future MIMO-OFDM receivers are expected to utilize a massive number of antennas, operate in dynamic environments, and explore high frequency bands, while satisfying strict constraints in terms of cost, power, and size. An emerging technology to realize massive MIMO receivers of reduced cost and power consumption is based on dynamic metasurface antennas (DMAs), which inherently implem…
A channel delay spread larger than the cyclic prefix (CP) creates inter-carrier/symbol interference (ISI/ICI) in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). Recent interests in low-latency applications have motivated the usage of shorter OFDM symbols where one can either downscale the CP at the cost of interference, or maintain it but with larger overhead. Alternatively, this paper studies channel shortening methods exploiting the properties of large multi-antenna precoding in order to steer the transmitted signal energy toward channel paths inside an insufficient CP. It is shown that I…
In this paper, we investigate and compare the performance of single- and multi-carrier modulation schemes for indoor visible light communication (VLC). Particularly, the performances of single carrier frequency domain equalization (SCFDE), orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and on-off keying (OOK) with minimum mean square error equalization (MMSE) are analyzed in order to mitigate the effect of multipath distortion of the indoor optical channel where nonlinearity distortion of light emitting diode (LED) transfer function is taken into account. Our results indicate that SCFDE sys…
We analyze the diversity gain for a distributed antenna subarray employing orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) in millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We show that the diversity gain depends on the number of transmitted data streams, the number of remote antenna units, and the number of propagation paths between RAUs. Furthermore, we show that by using bit-interleaved coded multiple beamforming (BICMB), one can achieve the maximum diversity gain in a distributed antenna subarray system. The assumption in both scenarios is that the numbe…
The Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) constitutes one of the prominent technologies for the next 6-th Generation (6G) of wireless communications. It is envisioned to enhance signal coverage in cases where obstacles block the direct communication from Base Stations (BSs), and when high carrier frequencies are used that are sensitive to attenuation losses. In the literature, the exploitation of RISs is exclusively based on traditional coherent demodulation, which necessitates the availability of Channel State Information (CSI). Given the CSI, a multi-antenna BS or a dedicated controller c…
Massive MIMO communication systems, by virtue of utilizing very large number of antennas, have a potential to yield higher spectral and energy efficiency in comparison with the conventional MIMO systems. In this paper, we consider uplink channel estimation in massive MIMO-OFDM systems with frequency selective channels. With increased number of antennas, the channel estimation problem becomes very challenging as exceptionally large number of channel parameters have to be estimated. We propose an efficient distributed linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) algorithm that can achieve near optim…
This paper studies the possibility of eliminating the redundant cyclic prefix (CP) of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in massive multiple-input multiple-output systems. The absence of CP increases the bandwidth efficiency in expense of intersymbol interference (ISI) and intercarrier interference (ICI). It is known that in massive MIMO, different types of interference fade away as the number of base station (BS) antennas tends to infinity. In this paper, we investigate if the channel distortions in the absence of CP are averaged out in the large antenna regime. To this end, we…
Under a low Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), the Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signal symbol rate is limited. Existing carrier number estimation algorithms lack adequate methods to deal with low SNR. This paper proposes an algorithm with a low error rate under low SNR by correlating the signal and applying a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) operation. By improving existing algorithms, we improve the performance of the OFDM carrier count algorithm. The performance of the OFDM's useful symbol time estimation algorithm is improved by estimating the number of carriers and symbol rate.
A novel method for correcting the effect of nonlinear distortion in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing signals is proposed. The method depends on adaptively selecting the distortion over a subset of the data carriers, and then using tools from compressed sensing and sparse Bayesian recovery to estimate the distortion over the other carriers. Central to this method is the fact that carriers (or tones) are decoded with different levels of confidence, depending on a coupled function of the magnitude and phase of the distortion over each carrier, in addition to the respective channel stren…
In this paper, we study backscatter communication (BC) for power-limited devices that are connected to a network for the Internet of Things (IoT), where joint estimation and detection is carried out at a receiver to detect signals from a backscatter device (BD) with ambient orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) carrier. In conventional BC, in order to avoid the difficulty of the carrier estimation, the energy detector is usually considered at a receiver at the cost of poor performance. To improve the performance, in this paper, we consider a novel approach that allows the carrier e…

Data detection in massive multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems is among the most critical tasks due to the excessively high implementation complexity. In this paper, we propose a novel, equalization-based soft-output data-detection algorithm and corresponding reference FPGA designs for wideband massive MU-MIMO systems that use orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). Our data-detection algorithm performs approximate minimum mean-square error (MMSE) or box-constrained equalization using coordinate descent. We deploy a variety of algorithm-level optimi…
The minimum average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) per bit required for error-free transmission over a fading channel is derived, and is shown to be equal to that of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, which is $-1.6$ dB. Discrete-time algorithms are presented for timing and carrier synchronization, as well as channel estimation, for turbo coded multiple input multiple output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) systems. Simulation results show that it is possible to achieve a bit error rate of $10^{-5}$ at an average SNR per bit of 5.5 dB, using two transmit and …
This paper proposes a novel spread spectrum and sub-carrier index modulation (SS-SIM) scheme, which is integrated to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) framework to enhance the diversity over the conventional IM schemes. Particularly, the resulting scheme, called SS-SIMOFDM, jointly employs both spread spectrum and sub-carrier index modulations to form a precoding vector which is then used to spread an M-ary complex symbol across all active sub-carriers. As a result, the proposed scheme enables a novel transmission of three signal domains: SS and sub-carrier indices, and a singl…
We propose a scalable video broadcasting scheme over MIMO-OFDM systems. The scalable video source layers are channel encoded and modulated into independent signal streams, which are then transmitted from the allocated antennas in certain time-frequency blocks. Each receiver employs the successive group decoder to decode the signal streams of interest by treating other signal streams as interference. The transmitter performs adaptive coding and modulation, and transmission antenna and subcarrier allocation, based on the rate feedback from the receivers. We also propose a hybrid receiver that sw…
Ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) enables radio-frequency (RF) powered backscatter devices (BDs) (e.g., sensors, tags) to modulate their information bits over ambient RF carriers in an over-the-air manner. This technology also called "modulation in the air", thus has emerged as a promising solution to achieve green communications for future Internet-of-Things. This paper studies an AmBC system by leveraging the ambient orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulated signals in the air. We first model such AmBC system from a spread-spectrum communication perspective, upon whi…
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and single-carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) are two commonly adopted modulation schemes for frequency-selective channels. Compared to SC-FDE, OFDM generally achieves higher data rate, but at the cost of higher transmit signal peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) that leads to lower power amplifier efficiency. This paper proposes a new modulation scheme, called flexible multi-group single-carrier (FMG-SC), which encapsulates both OFDM and SC-FDE as special cases, thus achieving more flexible rate-PAPR trade-offs between them. Specifi…
Hybrid analog and digital beamforming is a promising candidate for large-scale mmWave MIMO systems because of its ability to significantly reduce the hardware complexity of the conventional fully-digital beamforming schemes while being capable of approaching the performance of fully-digital schemes. Most of the prior work on hybrid beamforming considers narrowband channels. However, broadband systems such as mmWave systems are frequency-selective. In broadband systems, it is desirable to design common analog beamformer for the entire band while employing different digital beamformers in differ…
In this paper, detection of the primary user (PU) signal in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based cognitive radio (CR) system is addressed. According to the prior knowledge of the PU signal known to the detector, three detection algorithms based on the Neyman-Pearson philosophy are proposed. In the first case, a Gaussian PU signal with completely known probability density function (PDF) except for its received power is considered. The frequency band that the PU signal resides is also assumed known. Detection is performed individually at each OFDM sub-carrier possibly inter…
This paper presents results on the achievable spectral efficiency and on the energy efficiency for a wireless multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) link operating at millimeter wave frequencies (mmWave) in a typical 5G scenario. Two different single-carrier modem schemes are considered, i.e., a traditional modulation scheme with linear equalization at the receiver, and a single-carrier modulation with cyclic prefix, frequency-domain equalization and FFT-based processing at the receiver; these two schemes are compared with a conventional MIMO-OFDM transceiver structure. Our analysis jointly tak…
This letter proposes a parametric sparse multiple input multiple output (MIMO)-OFDM channel estimation scheme based on the finite rate of innovation (FRI) theory, whereby super-resolution estimates of path delays with arbitrary values can be achieved. Meanwhile, both the spatial and temporal correlations of wireless MIMO channels are exploited to improve the accuracy of the channel estimation. For outdoor communication scenarios, where wireless channels are sparse in nature, path delays of different transmit-receive antenna pairs share a common sparse pattern due to the spatial correlation of …
For the Internet of Things (IoT), there might be a large number of devices to be connected to the Internet through wireless technologies. In general, IoT devices would have various constraints due to limited processing capability, memory, energy source, and so on, and it is desirable to employ efficient wireless transmission schemes, especially for uplink transmissions. For example, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with index modulation (IM) or OFDM-IM can be considered for IoT devices due to its energy efficiency. In this paper, we study a different IM scheme for a single-car…
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a multi-carrier modulation scheme that provides efficient bandwidth utilization and robustness against time dispersive channels. This paper deals with the basic system model for OFDM based systems and with self-interference, or the corruption of desired signal by itself in OFDM systems. A simple transceiver based on OFDM modulation is presented. Important impairments in OFDM systems are mathematically analyzed
This paper proposes an efficient identification algorithm for spatial multiplexing (SM) and Alamouti (AL) coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals. The cross-correlation between the received signals from different antennas is exploited to provide a discriminating feature to identify SM-OFDM and AL-OFDM signals. The proposed algorithm requires neither estimation of the channel coefficients and noise power, nor the modulation of the transmitted signal. Moreover, it does not need space-time block code (STBC) or OFDM block synchronization. The effectiveness of the proposed a…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems have attracted much attention lately due to the many advantages they provide over single-antenna systems. Owing to the many antennas, low-cost implementation and low power consumption per antenna are desired. To that end, massive MIMO structures with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADC) have been investigated in many studies. However, the effect of a strong interferer in the adjacent band on quantized massive MIMO systems have not been examined yet. In this study, we analyze the performance of uplink massive MIMO with low-resol…
The problem of modulation classification for a multiple-antenna (MIMO) system employing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is investigated under the assumption of unknown frequency-selective fading channels and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The classification problem is formulated as a Bayesian inference task, and solutions are proposed based on Gibbs sampling and mean field variational inference. The proposed methods rely on a selection of the prior distributions that adopts a latent Dirichlet model for the modulation type and on the Bayesian network formalism. The Gibbs samplin…
In this work we study the effect of oscillator phase noise on the uplink performance of a massive multiple-input multiple output system. Specifically, we consider an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing-based uplink transmission and analyze two scenarios: (a) all the base station (BS) antennas are fed by a common oscillator, and (b) each of the BS antennas is fed by a different oscillator. For the scenarios considered, we derive the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio on each subcarrier and analyze the ergodic capacity when a linear receiver is used. Furthermore, we propose a phase noise…
In secure precise directional modulation (DM) networks, two practical random-subcarrier-selection (RSS) methods are proposed to transmit confidential message to the desired user per orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol with only single receive power peak formed by constructing random subcarrier set and performing a randomization procedure. This scheme completely addresses the crucial problem facing secure precise wireless transmission (SPWT), how to achieve the SPWT per OFDM symbol while the traditional SPWT holds only in statistically average sense. Several necessary condi…
Coarse quantization at the base station (BS) of a massive multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless system promises significant power and cost savings. Coarse quantization also enables significant reductions of the raw analog-to-digital converter (ADC) data that must be transferred from a spatially-separated antenna array to the baseband processing unit. The theoretical limits as well as practical transceiver algorithms for such quantized MU-MIMO systems operating over frequency-flat, narrowband channels have been studied extensively. However, the practically relevant scen…
