We compare four open-loop transmit diversity schemes in a coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system with four transmit antennas, namely cyclic delay diversity (CDD), Space-Time Block Code (STBC, Alamouti code is used) with CDD, Quasi-Orthogonal STBC (QO-STBC) and Minimum-Decoding-Complexity QOSTBC (MDC-QOSTBC). We show that in a coded system with low code rate, a scheme with spatial transmit diversity of second order can achieve similar performance to that with spatial transmit diversity of fourth order due to the additional diversity provided by the phase shift diversity with channel coding. In addition, we also compare the decoding complexity and other features of the above four mentioned schemes, such as the requirement for the training signals, hybrid automatic retransmission request (HARQ), etc. The discussions in this paper can be readily applied to future wireless communication systems, such as mobile systems beyond 3G, IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN, or IEEE 802.16 WiMAX, that employ more than two transmit antennas and OFDM.
Use of multiple light emitting diodes (LED) is an attractive way to increase spectral efficiency in visible light communications (VLC). A non-DC-biased OFDM (NDC OFDM) scheme that uses two LEDs has been proposed in the literature recently. NDC OFDM has been shown to perform better than other OFDM schemes for VLC like DC-biased OFDM (DCO OFDM) and asymmetrically clipped OFDM (ACO OFDM) in multiple LEDs settings. In this paper, we propose an efficient multiple LED OFDM scheme for VLC which uses {\em coded index modulation}. The proposed scheme uses two transmitter blocks, each having a pair of L…
Data detection of convolutional coded differential quaternary phase shift keyed (DQPSK) signals using a predictive Viterbi algorithm (VA) based receiver, is presented for single input, multiple output - orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) systems. The receiver has both error correcting capability and also the ability to perform channel estimation (prediction). The predictive VA operates on a supertrellis with just $S_{\mathrm{ST}}=S_{\mathrm{E}}\times 2^{P-1}$ states instead of $S_{\mathrm{ST}}=S_{\mathrm{E}}\times 2^{P}$ states, where the complexity reduction is achieved by using…
In this paper we expand our recently introduced concept of UW-OFDM (unique word orthogonal frequency division multiplexing). In UW-OFDM the cyclic prefixes (CPs) are replaced by deterministic sequences, the so-called unique words (UWs). The UWs are generated by appropriately loading a set of redundant subcarriers. By that a systematic complex number Reed Solomon (RS) code construction is introduced in a quite natural way, because an RS code may be defined as the set of vectors, for which a block of successive zeros occurs in the other domain w.r.t. a discrete Fourier transform. (For a fixed bl…
In the paper "Finite-SNR Diversity-Multiplexing Tradeoff for Network Coded Cooperative OFDMA Systems', the authors adopt a recently proposed subcarrier allocation algorithm aiming at providing optimal frequency diversity to an OFDMA-based network with network-coded cooperation (NCC), where $P$ source nodes transmit independent information to a common destination with the help of $M$ relay nodes, in a frequency-selective channel with $L$ coherence blocks. However, the analysis of the so-called NCC-OFDMA scheme proposed in the aforementioned paper assumes that the subcarrier allocation algorithm…
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has gained a lot of popularity over the years. Due to its popularity, OFDM has been adopted as a standard in cellular technology and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) communication systems. To improve the bit error rate (BER) performance, forward error correction (FEC) codes are often utilized to protect signals against unknown interference and channel degradations. In this paper, we apply soft-decision FEC, more specifically polar codes and a convolutional code, to an OFDM system in a quasi-static multipath fading channel, and compare BER per…
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a modulation technique susceptible to source, channel and amplifier nonlinearities because of its high peak-to-average ratio (PAPR). The distortion gets worse by increasing the average power of the OFDM signals since larger portion of the signals are affected by nonlinearity. In this paper we introduce Hadamard coded modulation (HCM) that uses the fast Walsh-Hadamard transform (FWHT) to modulate data as an alternative technique to OFDM in direct-detection wireless optical systems. This technique is shown to have a better performance for high…
In this paper we propose a novel transmit signal structure and an adjusted and optimized receiver for OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing). Instead of the conventional cyclic prefix we use a deterministic sequence, which we call unique word (UW), as guard interval. We show how unique words, which are already well investigated for single carrier systems with frequency domain equalization (SC/FDE), can also be introduced in OFDM symbols. Since unique words represent known sequences, they can advantageously be used for synchronization and channel estimation purposes. Furthermore, the…
For broadband wireless communication systems, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has been combined with Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) techniques. Bit-Interleaved Coded Multiple Beamforming (BICMB) can achieve both spatial diversity and spatial multiplexing for flat fading MIMO channels. For frequency selective fading MIMO channels, BICMB with OFDM (BICMB-OFDM) can be applied to achieve both spatial diversity and multipath diversity, making it an important technique. However, analyzing the diversity of BICMB-OFDM is a challenging problem. In this paper, the diversity analysis o…
In this work, we discuss techniques for coherently detecting turbo coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) signals, transmitted through frequency selective Rayleigh (the magnitude of each channel tap is Rayleigh distributed) fading channels having a uniform power delay profile. The channel output is further distorted by a carrier frequency and phase offset, besides additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). A new frame structure for OFDM, consisting of a known preamble, cyclic prefix, data and known postamble is proposed, which has a higher throughput compared to the earlier work. A …
Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) techniques have been incorporated with Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) for broadband wireless communication systems. Bit-Interleaved Coded Multiple Beamforming (BICMB) can achieve both spatial diversity and spatial multiplexing for flat fading MIMO channels. For frequency selective fading MIMO channels, BICMB with OFDM (BICMB-OFDM) can be employed to provide both spatial diversity and multipath diversity, making it an important technique. In our previous work, the subcarrier grouping technique was applied to combat the negative effect of subcar…
This paper concerns theoretical modeling of degradation of signal with OFDM coding caused by pseudo-random nonlinear distortions introduced by an analog-to-digital or digital-to-analog converter. A new quantity, effective number of samples, is defined and used for derivation of accurate expressions for autocorrelation function and the total power of the distortions. The derivation is based on probabilistic model of the signal and its transition probability. It is shown, that for digital (discrete and quantized) signals the effective number of samples replaces the total number of samples and is…
Active Constellation Extension (ACE) is one of techniques introduced for Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) reduction for OFDM systems. In this technique, the constellation points are extended such that the PAPR is minimized but the minimum distance of the constellation points does not decrease. In this paper, an iterative ACE method is extended to spatially encoded OFDM systems. The proposed methods are such that the PAPR is reduced simultaneously at all antennas, while the spatial encoding relationships still hold. It will be shown that the original ACE method can be employed before Space Ti…
A telecommunication system uses carriers in order to transmit information through a cable or wirelessly. If each time only one carrier is transmitted, then the system s signal will not be immune to frequency selective fading. If frequency selective fading includes the working frequency of the system, then the wireless link will not be established. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing OFDM is the primary solution for coping with inter signal interference and frequency selective fading. Many carriers can be produced by splitting a fast information stream to slower data series. Different or…
In this paper, we propose an enhanced Huffman coded orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with index modulation (EHC-OFDM-IM) scheme. The proposed scheme is capable of utilizing all legitimate subcarrier activation patterns (SAPs) and adapting the bijective mapping relation between SAPs and leaves on a given Huffman tree according to channel state information (CSI). As a result, a dynamic codebook update mechanism is obtained, which can provide more reliable transmissions. We take the average block error rate (BLER) as the performance evaluation metric and approximate it in closed form wh…
This paper presents a highly robust space-frequency block coded (SFBC) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. The proposed system is based on applying a short block length Walsh Hadamard transform (WHT) after the SFBC encoder. The main advantage of the proposed system is that the channel frequency responses over every two adjacent subcarriers become equal. Such interesting result provides an exceptional operating conditions for SFBC-OFDM systems transmitting over time and frequencyselective fading channels. Monte Carlo simulation is used…
Physical layer security has been considered as an important security approach in wireless communications to protect legitimate transmission from passive eavesdroppers. This paper investigates the physical layer security of a wireless multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication system in the presence of a multiple-antenna eavesdropper. We first propose a transmit-filter-assisted secure MIMO-OFDM system which can destroy the orthogonality of eavesdropper's signals. Our proposed transmit filter can disturb the reception of eavesdropper whi…
Cyclic prefix (CP) based MIMO-OFDM radar has been recently proposed for distributed transmit antennas, where there is no inter-range-cell interference (IRCI). It can collect full spatial diversity and each transmitter transmits signals with the same frequency band, i.e., the range resolution is not reduced. However, it needs to transmit multiple OFDM pulses consecutively to obtain range profiles for a single swath, which may be too long in time for a reasonable swath width. In this letter, we propose a CP based MIMO-OFDM synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system, where each transmitter transmits o…
Several recent standards such as IEEE 802.11a/g, IEEE 802.16, and ECMA Multiband Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MB-OFDM) for high data-rate Ultra-Wideband (UWB), employ bit-interleaved convolutionally-coded multicarrier modulation over quasi-static fading channels. Motivated by the lack of appropriate error rate analysis techniques for this popular type of system and channel model, we present two novel analytical methods for bit error rate (BER) estimation of coded multicarrier systems operating over frequency-selective quasi-static channels with non-ideal interleaving. In the fir…
In this paper, we study the Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) in a Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) two-user Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) Interference Channel (IFC). We assume that the transmitters are non-cooperative and have perfect knowledge of the local Channel State Information (CSI). We show that the necessary condition for the optimal transmission strategy at high SNR is for the energy transmitter to transmit its signal by allocating its transmit power on a single subcarrier. Accordingly, we propose a one-subcarrier selection method for t…
Multiple input multiple output techniques are considered attractive for future wireless communication systems, due to the continuing demand for high data rates, spectral efficiency, suppress interference ability and robustness of transmission. MIMO-OFDM is very helpful to transmit high data rate in wireless transmission and provides good maximum system capacity by getting the advantages of both MIMO and OFDM. The main problem in this system is that increase in number of transmit and receive antennas lead to hardware complexity. To tackle this issue, an effective optimal transmit antenna subset…
In this paper, we propose a novel joint coding-modulation technique based on serial concatenation of orthogonal linear transform, such as discrete Fourier transform (DFT) or Walsh-Hadamard transform (WHT), with memoryless nonlinearity. We demonstrate that such a simple signal construction may exhibit properties of a random code ensemble, as a result approaching channel capacity. Our computer simulations confirm that if the decoder relies on a modified approximate message passing algorithm, the proposed modulation technique exhibits performance on par with state-of-the-art coded modulation sche…
Single antenna vector OFDM (V-OFDM) system has been proposed and investigated in the past. It contains the conventional OFDM and the single carrier frequency domain equalizer (SC-FDE) as two special cases and is flexible to choose any number of symbols in intersymbol interference (ISI) by choosing a proper vector size. In this paper, we develop cyclic delay diversity (CDD) transmission for V-OFDM when there are multiple transmit antennas (CDD-V-OFDM). Similar to CDD-OFDM systems, CDD-V-OFDM can also collect both spatial and multipath diversities. Since V-OFDM first converts a single input sing…
The minimum average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) per bit required for error-free transmission over a fading channel is derived, and is shown to be equal to that of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, which is $-1.6$ dB. Discrete-time algorithms are presented for timing and carrier synchronization, as well as channel estimation, for turbo coded multiple input multiple output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) systems. Simulation results show that it is possible to achieve a bit error rate of $10^{-5}$ at an average SNR per bit of 5.5 dB, using two transmit and …
This paper proposes an efficient identification algorithm for spatial multiplexing (SM) and Alamouti (AL) coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals. The cross-correlation between the received signals from different antennas is exploited to provide a discriminating feature to identify SM-OFDM and AL-OFDM signals. The proposed algorithm requires neither estimation of the channel coefficients and noise power, nor the modulation of the transmitted signal. Moreover, it does not need space-time block code (STBC) or OFDM block synchronization. The effectiveness of the proposed a…
With finite-rate feedback, we propose two feedback methods for transmit beamforming in a point-to-point MISO-OFDM channel. For the first method, a receiver with perfect channel information, quantizes and feeds back the optimal transmit beamforming vectors of a few selected subcarriers, which are equally spaced. Based on those quantized vectors, the transmitter applies either constant, linear, or higher-order interpolation with the remaining beamforming vectors. With constant interpolation, we derive the approximate sum achievable rate and the optimal cluster size that maximizes the approximate…
In this paper, we examine cognitive radio systems that evolve dynamically over time due to changing user and environmental conditions. To combine the advantages of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) technologies, we consider a MIMO-OFDM cognitive radio network where wireless users with multiple antennas communicate over several non-interfering frequency bands. As the network's primary users (PUs) come and go in the system, the communication environment changes constantly (and, in many cases, randomly). Accordingly, the network's unlicen…
In this paper, we propose a Doppler pre-compensation scheme for high-mobility orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) uplink, where a high-speed terminal transmits signals to the base station (BS). Considering that the time-varying multipath channel consists of multiple Doppler frequency offsets (DFOs) with different angle of departures (AoDs), we propose to perform DFO pre-compensation at the transmitter with a large-scale uniform linear array (ULA). The transmitted signal passes through a beamforming network with high-spatial resolution to produce multiple parallel branches. Each b…
This work investigates the interplay of coded caching and spatial multiplexing in an overloaded Multiple-Input-Single-Output (MISO) Broadcast Channel (BC), i.e. a system where the number of users is greater than the number of transmitting antennas. On one hand, coded caching uses the aggregate global cache memory of the users to create multicasting opportunities. On the other hand, multiple antennas at the transmitter leverage the available CSIT to transmit multiple streams simultaneously. In this paper, we introduce a novel scheme which combines both the gain derived from coded-caching and sp…
We propose a unitary precoding scheme, namely polar-precoding, to improve the performance of polar-coded MIMO systems. In contrast to the traditional design of MIMO precoding criteria, the proposed polar-precoding scheme relies on the \emph{polarization criterion}. In particular, the precoding matrix design comprises two steps. After selecting a basic matrix for maximizing the capacity in the first step, we design a unitary matrix for maximizing the polarization effect among the data streams without degrading the capacity. Our simulation results show that the proposed polar-precoding scheme ou…
A new modulation scheme called OFDM with index modulation (OFDM-IM) is introduced recently. This scheme allows to transmit additional bits by mapping a part of incoming bit stream to the indices of the subcarriers. In this work, performance of OFDM-IM in multi-user networks for uplink and downlink scenario is studied. For both scenarios, novel base station designs are introduced in order to overcome the inter-user-interference (IUI). Simulation results show that OFDM-IM outperforms the classical OFDM in multi-user networks and IUI is eliminated successfully even in large networks.
We analyze the diversity gain for a distributed antenna subarray employing orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) in millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We show that the diversity gain depends on the number of transmitted data streams, the number of remote antenna units, and the number of propagation paths between RAUs. Furthermore, we show that by using bit-interleaved coded multiple beamforming (BICMB), one can achieve the maximum diversity gain in a distributed antenna subarray system. The assumption in both scenarios is that the numbe…
Differential space time block coding (STBC) achieves full spatial diversity and avoids channel estimation overhead. Over highly frequency-selective channels, STBC is integrated with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) to efficiently mitigate intersymbol interference effects. However, low-cost implementation of STBC-OFDM with direct-conversion transceivers is sensitive to In-phase/Quadrature-phase imbalance (IQI). In this paper, we quantify the performance impact of IQI at both the transmitter and receiver radio frequency front-ends on differential STBC-OFDM systems which has not …
We consider joint scheduling and diversity to enhance the benefits of multiuser diversity in an \OFDMA{} system. The \OFDMA{} spectrum is assumed to consist of $\Nrb$ resource blocks and the reduced feedback scheme consists of each user feeding back channel quality information (\CQI) for only the best-$\NFb$ resource blocks. Assuming largest normalized \CQI{} scheduling and a general value for $\NFb$, we develop a unified framework to analyze the sum rate of the system for both the quantized and non-quantized \CQI{} feedback schemes. Based on this framework, we provide closed-form expressions …
In this article we research about underwater acoustics transceivers. As Underwater acoustic transceivers consume more power than Radio frequency transceivers. The techniques which are being utilized in radio frequency cannot be implemented directly in underwater acoustic system it needs to be re investigated to design new methods. To achieve reliable acoustic data transmission new techniques should be achieved or the traditional Orthogonal frequency divisional multiplexing techniques should be revised. The power consumption also relies upon underwater acoustic signal propagation and transmissi…
In this letter, we propose a novel LDPC coding scheme to transmit extra bits aided by rotated signal constellations without any additional cost in transmission power or bandwidth. In the proposed scheme, the LDPC coded data are modulated by a rotated two-dimensional signal constellation, in which the rotation angle is specified by the given extra bits. At the receiver, the rotation angle is estimated with the aid of the statistical learning of the syndrome of the LDPC code. After recovering the rotation angle, the coded payload data can be decoded by the LDPC decoder. The simulation results sh…
In this paper, preamble-based least squares (LS) channel estimation in OFDM systems of the QAM and offset QAM (OQAM) types is considered, in both the frequency and the time domains. The construction of optimal (in the mean squared error (MSE) sense) preambles is investigated, for both the cases of full (all tones carrying pilot symbols) and sparse (a subset of pilot tones, surrounded by nulls or data) preambles. The two OFDM systems are compared for the same transmit power, which, for cyclic prefix (CP) based OFDM/QAM, also includes the power spent for CP transmission. OFDM/OQAM, with a sparse…
N-continuous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NC-OFDM) was demonstrated to provide significant sidelobe suppression for baseband OFDM signals. However, it will introduce severe interference to the transmit signals. Hence in this letter, we specifically design a class of low-interference NC-OFDM schemes for alleviating the introduced interference. Meanwhile, we also obtain an asymptotic spectrum analysis by a closed-form expression. It is shown that the proposed scheme is capable of reducing the interference to a negligible level, and hence to save the high complexity of signal recov…
We propose a bit-allocation scheme for powerline orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) that minimizes total transmit energy subject to total-bit and delay constraints. Multiple delay requirements stem from different sets of data that a transmitter must time-multiplex and transmit to a receiver. The proposed bit allocation takes into account the channel power-to-noise density ratio of subchannels as well as statistic of narrowband interference and impulsive noise that is pervasive in powerline communication (PLC) channels. The proposed scheme is optimal with 1 or 2 sets of data, and…
In this paper, we propose a novel non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme based on trellis-coded modulation (TCM). Different from those in the traditional code-domain NOMA, the incoming data streams of multiple users are jointly coded and mapped to the codewords so as to improve the coding gain of the system without any bandwidth extension. Both codeword design and multi-user detection are considered to optimize the TCM for NOMA. The multi-dimensional (MD) constellation is carefully selected and a new set partitioning algorithm is developed for MD signal set labeling. To achieve the trade…
In this paper, we consider a simple coding scheme for spatial modulation (SM), where the same set of active transmit antennas is repeatedly used over consecutive multiple transmissions. Based on a Gaussian approximation, an approximate maximum likelihood (ML) detection problem is formulated to detect the indices of active transmit antennas. We show that the solution to the approximate ML detection problem can achieve a full coding gain. Furthermore, we develop a low-complexity iterative algorithm to solve the problem with low complexity based on a well-known machine learning approach, i.e., va…
In this paper, we investigate the joint spectrum sensing and resource allocation problem to maximize throughput capacity of an OFDM-based cognitive radio link with a cognitive relay. By applying a cognitive relay that uses decode and forward (D&F), we achieve more reliable communications, generating less interference (by needing less transmit power) and more diversity gain. In order to account for imperfections in spectrum sensing, the proposed schemes jointly modify energy detector thresholds and allocates transmit powers to all cognitive radio (CR) subcarriers, while simultaneously assigning…
In the context of coded caching in the $K$-user BC, our work reveals the surprising fact that having multiple ($L$) transmitting antennas, dramatically ameliorates the long-standing subpacketization bottleneck of coded caching by reducing the required subpacketization to approximately its $L$th root, thus boosting the actual DoF by a multiplicative factor of up to $L$. In asymptotic terms, this reveals that as long as $L$ scales with the theoretical caching gain, then the full cumulative (multiplexing + full caching) gains are achieved with constant subpacketization. This is the first time, in…
Coded caching scheme provides us an effective framework to realize additional coded multicasting gain by exploiting coding into multiple transmitted signals. The goal of coded caching design is to jointly optimize the placement and delivery scheme so as to minimize the amount of transmitted coded signals. However, few research efforts consider multiple-round coded caching design problem, in which fixed and mobile users may coexist in one network different number of active users present in successive rounds. Obviously, such dynamic network configurations may lead to undesired frequent placement…
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals have high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), which causes distortion when OFDM signal passes through a nonlinear high power amplifier (HPA). A partial transmit sequence (PTS) scheme is one of the typical PAPR reduction methods. A cyclic shifted sequences (CSS) scheme is evolved from the PTS scheme to improve the PAPR reduction performance, where OFDM signal subsequences are cyclically shifted and combined to generate alternative OFDM signal sequences. The shift value (SV) sets in the CSS scheme should be carefully selected because thos…
It is shown that while the mutual information curves for coded modulation (CM) and bit interleaved coded modulation (BICM) overlap in the case of a single input single output channel, the same is not true in multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channels. A method for mitigating fading in the presence of multiple transmit antennas, named coordinate interleaving (CI), is presented as a generalization of component interleaving for a single transmit antenna. The extent of any advantages of CI over BICM, relative to CM, is analyzed from a mutual information perspective; the analysis is based on an…
We propose a novel modulation scheme for intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) based optical communication system employing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). This method utilizes the DC-bias, which typically is discarded at the receiver-end, to carry information to achieve higher power efficiency. By formulating and solving a convex optimization problem, a constellation in high dimensional space is designed offline for the input of the transmitter-side inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) block. We point out that one can choose partial or full DC power for informa…
We propose a new artificial-noise aided hybrid time-switching/power-splitting scheme for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems to securely transmit data and transfer energy to a legitimate receiving node. In our proposed scheme, the cyclic prefix has two more benefits in addition to the cancellation of the inter-symbol interference between the OFDM blocks. Firstly, it enables the legitimate transmitter to send artificial-noise (AN) vectors in a way such that the interference can be canceled at the legitimate receiver prior to information decoding. Secondly, its power is use…
The performance analysis of a novel optical modulation scheme is presented in this paper. The basic concept is to transmit signs of modulated optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (O-OFDM) symbols and absolute values of the symbols separately by two information carrying units: 1) indices of two light emitting diodes (LED) transmitters that represent positive and negative signs separately; and 2) optical intensity symbols that carry the absolute values of signals. The new approach, referred as to non-DC-biased OFDM (NDC-OFDM), uses the optical spatial modulation (OSM) technique to …
In this paper, we investigate and compare the performance of single- and multi-carrier modulation schemes for indoor visible light communication (VLC). Particularly, the performances of single carrier frequency domain equalization (SCFDE), orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and on-off keying (OOK) with minimum mean square error equalization (MMSE) are analyzed in order to mitigate the effect of multipath distortion of the indoor optical channel where nonlinearity distortion of light emitting diode (LED) transfer function is taken into account. Our results indicate that SCFDE sys…
This letter investigates bit-interleaved coded multiple beamforming (BICMB) with perfect coding in millimeter-wave (mm-wave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems to achieve both maximum diversity gain and multiplexing gain. Using perfect coding with BICMB enables us to do this. We show that by using BICMB and perfect coding, the diversity gain becomes independent from the number of transmitted data streams and the number of antennas in each remote antenna unit (RAU) at the transmitter and the receiver. The assumption is that the perfect channel state information (CSI) is known…
In this paper, a point-to-point Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system with a decode-and-forward (DF) relay is considered. The transmission consists of two hops. The source transmits in the first hop, and the relay transmits in the second hop. Each hop occupies one time slot. The relay is half-duplex, and capable of decoding the message on a particular subcarrier in one time slot, and re-encoding and forwarding it on a different subcarrier in the next time slot. Thus each message is transmitted on a pair of subcarriers in two hops. It is assumed that the destination is capabl…
We propose a new secure transmission scheme for uplink multiple-input single-output (MISO) orthogonal-frequency multiplexing (OFDM) systems in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers. Our proposed scheme utilizes the sub-channels orthogonality of OFDM systems to simultaneously transmit data and secret key symbols. The base station, Bob, shares secret key symbols with the legitimate user, Alice, using wiretap coding over a portion of the sub-channels. Concurrently, Alice uses the accumulated secret keys in her secret-key queue to encrypt data symbols using a one time pad (OTP) cipher and transmi…
The Golden Code is a full-rate full-diversity space-time code, which achieves maximum coding gain for Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems with two transmit and two receive antennas. Since four information symbols taken from an M-QAM constellation are selected to construct one Golden Code codeword, a maximum likelihood decoder using sphere decoding has the worst-case complexity of O(M^4), when the Channel State Information (CSI) is available at the receiver. Previously, this worst-case complexity was reduced to O(M^(2.5)) without performance degradation. When the CSI is known by the t…
In this paper, we propose a new subcarrier index modulation scheme for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), which incorporates the Reed-Solomon (RS) encoding in a visible light communication (VLC) system. In this scheme, the incoming bits are first encoded using the RS encoder, then a set of symbols in the resulting RS codeword are punctured, and the remaining symbols are modulated and mapped onto the OFDM subcarriers. This system is referred to as RS-OFDM-IM. Unlike the traditional subcarrier index modulation (SIM) schemes, the proposed scheme operates based on conveying extra i…
