In this article we research about underwater acoustics transceivers. As Underwater acoustic transceivers consume more power than Radio frequency transceivers. The techniques which are being utilized in radio frequency cannot be implemented directly in underwater acoustic system it needs to be re investigated to design new methods. To achieve reliable acoustic data transmission new techniques should be achieved or the traditional Orthogonal frequency divisional multiplexing techniques should be revised. The power consumption also relies upon underwater acoustic signal propagation and transmission distances. Several underwater acoustic applications require long-term monitoring of the sea. For the battery powered modems, it becomes very serious problem. By designing an Energy efficient OFDM Communication system we can solve this problem. We study about peak to average power ratio in an Orthogonal frequency divisional multiplexing system by reducing the major draw-back of OFDM system. The PAPR reduction utilized in this paper is Partial Transmit Sequences for underwater acoustic OFDM communication system which has lesser complexity. The results have provided better performance in underwater acoustic OFDM communication system.
This paper investigates the impacts of Inter-Channel Interference (ICI) effects on a shallow underwater acoustic (UWA) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) communication system. Considering both the turbulence of the water surface and the roughness of the bottom, a stochastic geometry-based channel model utilized for a wide-band transmission scenario has been exploited to derive a simulation model. Since the system bandwidth and the sub-carrier spacing is very limited in the range of a few kHz, the channel capacity of a UWA system is severely suffered by the ICI effect. For furthe…
Accurate channel estimation is critical to the performance of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) underwater acoustic (UWA) communications, especially under multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) scenarios. In this paper, we explore Vector Approximate Message Passing (VAMP) coupled with Expected Maximum (EM) to obtain channel estimation (CE) for MIMO OFDM UWA communications. The EM-VAMP-CE scheme is developed by employing a Bernoulli-Gaussian (BG) prior distribution for the channel impulse response, and hyperparameters of the BG prior distribution are learned via the EM algorithm.…
In this paper, by exploiting the powerful ability of deep learning, we devote to designing a well-performing and pilot-saving neural network for the channel estimation in underwater acoustic (UWA) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communications. By considering the channel estimation problem as a matrix completion problem, we interestingly find it mathematically equivalent to the image super-resolution problem arising in the field of image processing. Hence, we attempt to make use of the very deep super-resolution neural network (VDSR), one of the most typical neural networks t…

Suppressing the inter-carrier interference (ICI) is crucial for differentially coherent detection in underwater acoustic (UWA) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems due to the fact that the UWA channel is inherently violently Doppler-shifted. In this paper, we propose a new ICI suppression method, referred to as the partially-shifted fast Fourier transform (PS-FFT), which eliminates the ICI from both the time and frequency domains. Specifically, the PS-FFT first divides the received signal in the entire block duration into several short non-overlapping ones to reduce the ch…
In this paper, we propose an iterative receiver based on gridless variational Bayesian line spectra estimation (VALSE) named JCCD-VALSE that \emph{j}ointly estimates the \emph{c}arrier frequency offset (CFO), the \emph{c}hannel with high resolution and carries out \emph{d}ata decoding. Based on a modularized point of view and motivated by the high resolution and low complexity gridless VALSE algorithm, three modules named the VALSE module, the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) module and the decoder module are built. Soft information is exchanged between the modules to progressively improve th…
Due to the limited available bandwidth and dynamic channel, data rates are extremely limited in underwater acoustic (UWA) communications. Addressing this concern, in-band fullduplex (IBFD) has the potential to double the efficiency in a given bandwidth. In an IBFD scheme, transmission and reception are performed simultaneously in the same frequency band. However, in UWA-IBFD, because of reflections from the surface and bottom and the inhomogeneity of the water, a significant part of the transmitted signal returns back to the IBFD receiver. This signal contaminates the desired signal from the r…
We propose a bit-allocation scheme for powerline orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) that minimizes total transmit energy subject to total-bit and delay constraints. Multiple delay requirements stem from different sets of data that a transmitter must time-multiplex and transmit to a receiver. The proposed bit allocation takes into account the channel power-to-noise density ratio of subchannels as well as statistic of narrowband interference and impulsive noise that is pervasive in powerline communication (PLC) channels. The proposed scheme is optimal with 1 or 2 sets of data, and…
A promising waveform candidate for future joint sensing and communication systems is orthogonal frequencydivision multiplexing (OFDM). For such systems, supporting multiple transmit antennas requires multiplexing methods for the generation of orthogonal transmit signals, where equidistant subcarrier interleaving (ESI) is the most popular multiplexing method. In this work, we analyze a multiplexing method called Doppler-division multiplexing (DDM). This method applies a phase shift from OFDM symbol to OFDM symbol to separate signals transmitted by different Tx antennas along the velocity axis o…
Dual-function radar-communication (DFRC) systems, which can efficiently utilize the congested spectrum and costly hardware resources by employing one common waveform for both sensing and communication (S&C), have attracted increasing attention. While the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technique has been widely adopted to support high-quality communications, it also has great potentials of improving radar sensing performance and providing flexible S&C. In this paper, we propose to jointly design the dual-functional transmit signals occupying several subcarriers to realize mul…
Spatial modulation (SM) has proven to be a promising multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technique which provides high energy efficiency and reduces system complexity. In SM, only one transmitter is active at any given time while the rest of them remain silent. The index of the active transmitter carries information. This spatial information is in addition to the data carried by the constellation symbols in the signal domain. Therefore, SM increases the transmission rate of the communication system compared to single-input-single-output and space-time block coding (STBC)-MIMO. For signal dom…
In this letter, we propose a power allocation scheme for relayed orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) systems. The proposed power allocation scheme replies on artificial neural network (ANN) and deep learning to allocate transmit power among various subcarriers at the source and relay nodes. The objective of the power allocation scheme is to minimize the overall transmit power under a set of constraints. Without loss of generality, we assume all subcarriers at source and relay nodes are independently distributed with different statistical distribution para…
A telecommunication system uses carriers in order to transmit information through a cable or wirelessly. If each time only one carrier is transmitted, then the system s signal will not be immune to frequency selective fading. If frequency selective fading includes the working frequency of the system, then the wireless link will not be established. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing OFDM is the primary solution for coping with inter signal interference and frequency selective fading. Many carriers can be produced by splitting a fast information stream to slower data series. Different or…
Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is widely used in modern wireless networks thanks to its efficient handling of multipath environment. However, it suffers from a poor peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) which requires a large power backoff, degrading the power amplifier (PA) efficiency. In this work, we propose to use a neural network (NN) at the transmitter to learn a high-dimensional modulation scheme allowing to control the PAPR and adjacent channel leakage ratio (ACLR). On the receiver side, a NN-based receiver is implemented to carry out demapping of the transmitted bits. …
Impulsive noise is a major impediment to orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) based underwater acoustic (UWA) communications. In this work, we evaluate the performance of a memoryless analog nonlinear preprocessor (MANP) that is used to mitigate outliers. The proposed MANP exhibits intermittent nonlinearity only in the presence of the impulsive noise and suppresses the power of outliers based on their amplitudes. Since the outliers are distinguishable in the analog domain prior to anti-aliasing filtering, the MANP outperforms its digital counterparts in all scenarios. Experimental…
In this paper we present a method that prevents an unauthorized receiver (URx) from correctly estimating the Doppler shift present in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) wireless signal. To prevent this estimation we propose to insert an artificial frequency variation in the transmitted signal that mimics a transmitter (Tx) movement with a spoofed/fake speed. This spoofed Doppler shift does not affect data demodulation since it can be compensated at the legitimate receiver (LRx). We evaluate our method for its efficacy through simulations and we show that it offers a reliable …
This paper proposes low complexity detection for internet of underwater things (IoUT)s communication. The signal is transmitted from the source to the destination using several sensors. To simplify the computational operations at the transmitter and the sensory nodes, a single carrier frequency domain equalizer (SC-FDE) is proposed and amplify-and-forward (AF) protocols are employed. Fast Fourier transform (FFT) and use of cyclic prefix (CP) are also proposed to simplify these algorithms when compared to time-domain equalization. As precise channel data is difficult to capture in underwater co…
In this paper, we investigate the worst-case robust beamforming design and resource block (RB) assignment problem for total transmit power minimization of the central controller while guaranteeing each robot's transmission with target number of data bits and within required ultra-low latency and extremely high reliability. By using the property of the independence of each robot's beamformer design, we can obtain the equivalent power control design form of the original beamforming design. The binary RB mapping indicators are transformed into continuous ones with additional $\ell_0$-norm constra…

An attractive research direction for future communication systems is the design of new waveforms that can both support high throughputs and present advantageous signal characteristics. Although most modern systems use orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) for its efficient equalization, this waveform suffers from multiple limitations such as a high adjacent channel leakage ratio (ACLR) and high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). In this paper, we propose a learning-based method to design OFDM-based waveforms that satisfy selected constraints while maximizing an achievable informat…
In this paper, a novel joint bit and power loading algorithm is proposed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems operating in fading environments. The algorithm jointly maximizes the throughput and minimizes the transmitted power, while guaranteeing a target average bit error rate (BER) and meeting a constraint on the total transmit power. Simulation results are described that illustrate the performance of the proposed scheme and demonstrate its superiority when compared to the algorithm in [1].
In this paper, we propose a securely precoded OFDM (SP-OFDM) system for efficient and reliable transmission under disguised jamming, where the jammer intentionally misleads the receiver by mimicking the characteristics of the authorized signal, and causes complete communication failure. More specifically, we bring off a dynamic constellation by introducing secure shared randomness between the legitimate transmitter and receiver, and hence break the symmetricity between the authorized signal and the disguised jamming. We analyze the channel capacities of both the traditional OFDM and SP-OFDM un…
In this paper, we adopt a multiobjective optimization approach to jointly optimize the rate and power in OFDM-based cognitive radio (CR) systems. We propose a novel algorithm that jointly maximizes the OFDM-based CR system throughput and minimizes its transmit power, while guaranteeing a target bit error rate per subcarrier and a total transmit power threshold for the secondary user (SU), and restricting both co-channel and adjacent channel interferences to existing primary users (PUs) in a statistical manner. Since the interference constraints are met statistically, the SU transmitter does no…
Localization of underwater networks is important in many military and civil applications. Because GPS receivers do not work below the water surface, traditional localization methods form a relative topology of underwater nodes (UWNs) and utilize either anchor nodes or floating gateways with dual transceivers in order to determine global coordinates. However, these methods introduce logistical complications and security risks in deploying the anchor and/or surface gateways. This paper tackles such an issue by proposing new localization techniques which can remotely localize UWNs using optoacous…
Research in underwater communication is rapidly becoming attractive due to its various modern applications. An efficient mechanism to secure such communication is via physical layer security. In this paper, we propose a novel physical layer authentication (PLA) mechanism in underwater acoustic communication networks where we exploit the position/location of the transmitter nodes to achieve authentication. We perform transmitter position estimation from the received signals at reference nodes deployed at fixed positions in a predefined underwater region. We use time of arrival (ToA) estimation …
In this study, we propose a differentiable layer for OFDM-based autoencoders (OFDM-AEs) to avoid high instantaneous power without regularizing the cost function used during the training. The proposed approach relies on the manipulation of the parameters of a set of functions that yield complementary sequences (CSs) through a deep neural network (DNN). We guarantee the peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) of each OFDM-AE symbol to be less than or equal to 3 dB. We also show how to normalize the mean power by using the functions in addition to PAPR. The introduced layer admits auxiliary parameters…
In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning based approach for joint channel estimation and signal detection in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems by exploring the time and frequency correlation of wireless fading channels. Specifically, a Channel Estimation Network (CENet) is designed to replace the conventional interpolation procedure in pilot-aided estimation scheme. Then, based on the outcome of the CENet, a Channel Conditioned Recovery Network (CCRNet) is designed to recover the transmit signal. Experimental results demonstrate that CENet and CCRNet achieve supe…
A novel monostatic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) dual-function radar communication (DFRC) system is proposed, that uses the available bandwidth efficiently for both sensing and communication. The proposed system, referred to as Shared-Subcarriers DFRC (SS-DFRC) transmits wideband, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms and allows the transmit antennas to use subcarriers in a shared fashion. A novel, low complexity target estimation approach is proposed to overcome the coupling of radar target parameters and transmitted symbols that arises in that case. When all sub…
We study the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) problem in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In conventional clipping and filtering based PAPR reduction techniques, clipping noise is allowed to spread over the whole active passband, thus degrading the transmit signal quality similarly at all active subcarriers. However, since modern radio networks support frequency-multiplexing of users and services with highly different quality-of-service expectations, clipping noise from PAPR reduction should be distributed unequally over the corresponding physical resource blocks (P…
A novel dual-function radar communication (DFRC) system is proposed, that achieves high target resolution and high communication rate. It consists of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar, where only a small number of antennas are active in each channel use. The probing waveforms are orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) type. The OFDM carriers are divided into two groups, one that is used by the active antennas in a shared fashion, and another one, where each subcarrier is assigned to an active antenna in an exclusive fashion (private subcarriers). Target estimation is car…
Acoustic communication is currently considered as the best way to transmit information over long distances under water, since acoustic waves have lower attenuation in water than the other information transmission media. However, current information transmission rates of the underwater acoustic communication is usually limited by low-frequency bandwidth due to the large attenuation which characterized in high-frequency sound waves in water. Spiral acoustic beams with helical wavefront dislocations carrying orbital angular momentum have been applied to acoustic levitation and capture. Recently, …
One of the major drawbacks of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals is the high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) of the transmitted signal. Many PAPR reduction techniques have been proposed in the literature, among which, partial transmit sequence (PTS) technique has been taken considerable investigation. However, PTS technique requires an exhaustive search over all combinations of allowed phase factors, whose complexity increases exponentially with the number of sub-blocks. In this paper, a newly suboptimal method based on modified artificial bee colony (ABC-PTS) algorith…
In this paper, robustness of non-contiguous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NC-OFDM) transmissions is investigated and contrasted to OFDM transmissions for fending off signal exploitation attacks. In contrast to ODFM transmissions, NC-OFDM transmissions take place over a subset of active subcarriers to either avoid incumbent transmissions or for strategic considerations. A point-to-point communication system is considered in this paper in the presence of an adversary (exploiter) that aims to infer transmission parameters (e.g., the subset of active subcarriers and duration of the s…

The orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission has shown promise in applications of visible light communication (VLC). However, the variation of the nonlinearity of the optical power emitted by the high power light emitting diode (HPLED) as a function of current and temperature implies in drastic OFDM-VLC performance degradation. The first part of this work, experimentally confirms and models this degradation due to temperature in a high power white HPLED. The higher attenuation at high frequencies, which is inherent to the HPLED and which is accentuated by the effect of th…
Ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) over orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) signals has recently been proposed as an appealing technique for low power Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. The special spectrum structure of OFDM signals provides a range of flexibility in terms of bit-error-rate (BER) performance, data rate, and power consumption. In this paper, we study subcarrier-wise backscatter communication over ambient OFDM signals. This new AmBC is to exploit the special spectrum structure of OFDM to transmit data over its squeezed orthogonal subcarriers. We propose a…
A portable radio communication system operating in the 30 MHz band and capable of transmitting high-definition live underwater video images is presented. The system operation is based on launching electromagnetic surface waves propagating along water-air interface using specially designed surface wave antennas. Since the propagation length of the surface electromagnetic waves far exceeds the skin depth of bulk radio waves at the same frequency, this technique is useful for video communication underwater over distances of several meters. Also, this system appears to be efficient at communicatin…
With the growing use of underwater acoustic communications (UWAC) for both industrial and military operations, there is a need to ensure communication security. A particular challenge is represented by underwater acoustic networks (UWANs), which are often left unattended over long periods of time. Currently, due to physical and performance limitations, UWAC packets rarely include encryption, leaving the UWAN exposed to external attacks faking legitimate messages. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for message authentication in a UWAN setting. We begin by observing that, due to the stron…
