For $d \ge 4$, the Noether-Lefschetz locus $\mathrm{NL}_d$ parametrizes smooth, degree $d$ surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ with Picard number at least $2$. A conjecture of Harris states that there are only finitely many irreducible components of the Noether-Lefschetz locus of non-maximal codimension. Voisin showed that the conjecture is false for sufficiently large $d$, but is true for $d \le 5$. She also showed that for $d=6, 7$, there are finitely many \emph{reduced}, irreducible components of $\mathrm{NL}_d$ of non-maximal codimension. In this article, we prove that for any $d \ge 6$, there are infinitely many \emph{non-reduced} irreducible components of $\mathrm{NL}_d$ of non-maximal codimension.
For a fixed $d \ge 5$, the Noether-Lefschetz locus parametrizes smooth degree $d$ surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ with Picard number greater than $1$. This is a countable union of proper algebraic varieties. It is known (due to works of Voisin, Green and others) that the largest irreducible component is of codimension (in the space of all smooth surface in $\mathbb{P}^3$ of degree $d$) equal to $d-3$. The main object of study in this article is: For fixed $r$ greater than $2$ and less than $d$, the locus parametrizing degree $d$ surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ with Picard number at least equal to $r$. I…
We further analyze the moduli space of stable curves with level structure provided by Chiodo and Farkas in \cite{AA}. Their result builds upon Harris and Mumford analysis of the locus of singularities of the moduli space of curves and shows in particular that for levels 2, 3, 4, and 6 the locus of noncanonical singularities is completely analogous to the locus described by Harris and Mumford, it has codimension 2 and arises from the involution of elliptic tails carrying a trivial level structure. For the remaining levels (5, 7, and beyond), the picture also involves components of higher codime…
Eisenbud and Harris conjectured in 1982 that an algebraic curve of high genus lies on a surface of low degree (which they proved for curves of very large degree). They observed constraints on the Hilbert function of a general hyperplane section which imply that the hyperplane section lies on a curve of low degree. We investigate this situation under deformation. Given a set of sufficiently many points (as postulated by the conjecture) on a linearly normal curve, we show that if the number of conditions on quadrics remains constant, then for every deformation of the points the curve deforms alo…
We prove that any arithmetically Gorenstein curve on a smooth, general hypersurface $X\subset \bbP^{4}$ of degree at least 6, is a complete intersection. This gives a characterisation of complete intersection curves on general type hypersurfaces in $\bbP^4$. We also verify that certain 1-cycles on a general quintic hypersurface are non-trivial elements of the Griffiths group.
In this paper, we apply liaison theory to the Eisenbud-Green-Harris conjecture and prove that the conjecture holds for a certain subclass of homogeneous ideals in the linkage class of a complete intersection ideal. In the case of three variables, we prove that the conjecture holds for Gorenstein ideals.
We exhibit examples of projective varieties with degenerate Gauss mappings and determine numerical invariants of such varieties. Our examples provide counter-examples to an asserted structure theorem of Griffiths and Harris (Ann. Sci. ENS 1979).
The Lang map, namely the universal dominant rational map to a variety of general type, is constructed and briefly discussed in relation with arithmetic conjectures of Harris, Lang and Manin. Existence of the Lang map follows from the additivity of Kodaira dimension, but the fine structure depends on conjectures on birational classification of algebraic varieties. Serious applications of the Lang map are still being searched.
We prove an analogue for holonomic DQ-modules of the codimension-three conjecture for microdifferential modules recently proved by Kashiwara and Vilonen. Our result states that any holonomic DQ-module having a lattice extends uniquely beyond an analytic subset of codimension equal to or larger than three in a Lagrangian subvariety containing the support of the DQ-module.
Rapoport-Zink spaces, or more generally local Shimura varieties, are expected to provide geometric realization of the local Langlands correspondence via their $l$-adic cohomology. Along this line is a conjecture by Harris and Viehmann, which roughly says that when the underlying local Shimura datum is not basic, the $l$-adic cohomology of the local Shimura variety is parabolically induced. We verify this conjecture for Rapoport-Zink spaces which are Hodge type and Hodge-Newton reducible. The main strategy is to embed such a Rapoport-Zink space into an appropriate space of EL type, for which th…
We study the $l$-adic cohomology of unramified Rapoport-Zink spaces of EL-type. These spaces were used in Harris and Taylor's proof of the local Langlands correspondence for $\mathrm{GL_n}$ and to show local-global compatibilities of the Langlands correspondence. In this paper we consider certain morphisms, $\mathrm{Mant}_{b, μ}$, of Grothendieck groups of representations constructed from the cohomology of the above spaces, as studied by Harris and Taylor, Mantovan, Fargues, Shin, and others. Due to earlier work of Fargues and Shin we have a description of $\mathrm{Mant}_{b, μ}(ρ)$ for $ρ$ a s…
In this paper, we prove that the statement: ``The (Generalized) Hodge Conjecture holds for codimension-two cycles on a smooth projective variety $X$" is a birationally invariant statement, that is, if the statement is true for $X$, it is also true for all smooth varieties $X'$ which are birationally equivalent to $X$. We also prove the analogous result for 1-cycles. As direct corollaries, the Hodge Conjecture holds for smooth rational projective manifolds with dimension less than or equal to five, and, the Generalized Hodge Conjecture holds for smooth rational projective manifolds with dimensi…
We prove the Tate conjecture for divisor classes and the Mumford-Tate conjecture for the cohomology in degree 2 for varieties with $h^{2,0}=1$ over a finitely generated field of characteristic 0, under a mild assumption on their moduli. As an application of this general result, we prove the Tate and Mumford-Tate conjectures for some classes of algebraic surfaces with $p_g=1$.
It is conjectured that the dual variety of every smooth nonlinear subvariety of dimension $> \frac{2N}{3}$ in projective $N$-space is a hypersurface, an expectation known as the duality defect conjecture. This would follow from the truth of Hartshorne's complete intersection conjecture but nevertheless remains open for the case of subvarieties of codimension $> 2$. A combinatorial approach to proving the conjecture in the codimension $2$ case was developed by Holme, and following this approach Oaland devised an algorithm for proving the conjecture in the codimension $3$ case for particular $N$…
In his work on birational classification of foliations on projective surfaces, Brunella showed that every regular foliation on a rational surface is algebraically integrable with rational leaves. This led Touzet to conjecture that every regular foliation on a rationally connected manifold is algebraically integrable with rationally connected leaves. Druel proved this conjecture for the case of weak Fano manifolds. In this paper, we extend this result showing that Touzet's conjecture is true for codimension one foliations on threefolds with nef anti-canonical bundle.
We give an upper bound on the codimension in $M_{g,1}$ of the variety $M^S_{g,1}$ of marked curves $(C,p)$ with a given Weierstrass semigroup. The bound is a combinatorial quantity which we call the effective weight of the semigroup; it is a refinement of the weight of the semigroup, and differs from it precisely when the semigroup is not primitive. We prove that whenever the effective weight is less than g, the variety $M^S_{g,1}$ is nonempty and has a component of the predicted codimension. These results extend previous results of Eisenbud, Harris, and Komeda to the case of non-primitive sem…
Harris and Morrison constructed semistable families f:F \to Y of k-gonal curves of genus g such that for every k the corresponding modular curves give a sweeping family in the k-gonal locus in the moduli space. Their construction depends on the choice of a smooth curve X. We show that if the genus g(X) is sufficiently high with respect to g, then the ratio K_F^2 / χ(O_F) is 8 asymptotically with respect to g(X). We show also that if the gonality is maximal and some conjectured estimates of Harris and Morrison hold, the slope of the fibration f: F\to Y is 12 asymptotically with respect to g and…
In this note we sketch a proof of a fundamental conjecture, the codimension-three conjecture, for microdifferential holonomic systems with regular singularities. It states that any regular holonomic E-module extends beyond a codimension-three analytic subset.
The codimension-three conjecture states that any regular holonomic module extends uniquely beyond an analytic subset with codimension equal to or larger than three. We give a proof of this conjecture.
We establish the multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan about the multiplicity of graded Cohen-Macaulay algebras over a field, for codimension two algebras and for Gorenstein algebras of codimension three. In fact, we prove stronger bounds than the conjectured ones allowing us to characterize the extremal cases. This may be seen as a converse to the multiplicity formula of Huneke and Miller that inspired the conjectural bounds.
We prove the conjecture that two projective symplectic resolutions for a symplectic variety $W$ are related by Mukai's elementary transformations over $W$ in codimension 2 in the following cases: (i). nilpotent orbit closures in a classical simple complex Lie algebra; (ii). some quotient symplectic varieties.
In this paper, the generalized Bloch Conjecture on zero cycles for the quotient of certain complete intersections with trivial canonical bundle is proved to hold. As an application of Bloch-Srinivas method on the decomposition of the diagonal, we compute the rational coefficient Lawson homology for 1-cycles and codimension two cycles for these quotient varieties. The (Generalized) Hodge Conjecture is proved to hold for codimension two cycles (and hence also for 2-cycles) on these quotient varieties.
We show that the Brill-Noether locus M^3_{18,16} is an irreducible component of the Gieseker-Petri locus in genus 18 having codimension 2 in the moduli space of curves. This result disproves a conjecture predicting that the Gieseker-Petri locus is always divisorial.
In this note, we show how the classical Hodge index theorem implies the Hodge index conjecture of Beilinson for height pairing of homologically trivial codimension two cycles over function field of characteristic 0. Such an index conjecture has been used in our paper on Gross-Schoen cycles to deduce the Bogomolov conjecture and a lower bound for Hodge class (or Faltings height) from some conjectures about metrized graphs which have just been recently proved by Zubeyir Cinkir.
We prove a conjecture of Gavril Farkas claiming that for all integers r \geq 2 and g \geq \binom{r+2}{2} there exists a component of the locus \mathcal{S}^r_g of spin curves with a theta characteristic L such that h^0(L) \geq r+1 and h^0(L)\equiv r+1 (mod 2) which has codimension \binom{r+1}{2} inside the moduli space \mathcal{S}_g of spin curves of genus g.
We discuss two conjectures by Francesco Severi and Joe Harris about the irreducibility and the dimension of the Hilbert scheme parameterizing smooth projective curves of given degree and genus.
A Gorenstein A-algebra R of codimension 2 is a perfect finite A-algebra such that R=Ext^2(R,A) holds as R-modules, A being a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with dim(A)-dim_A(R)=2. I prove a structure theorem for these algebras improving on an old theorem of M. Grassi. Special attention is paid to the question how the ring structure of R is encoded in its Hilbert resolution. It is shown that R is automatically a ring once one imposes a weak depth condition on a determinantal ideal derived from a presentation matrix of R over A. The interplay of Gorenstein algebras and Koszul modules as introduced by…
We characterize the smallest codimension components of the Hodge locus of smooth degree $d$ hypersurfaces of the projective space $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ of even dimension $n$, passing through the Fermat variety (with $d\neq 3,4,6$). They correspond to the locus of hypersurfaces containing a linear algebraic cycle of dimension $\frac{n}{2}$. Furthermore, we prove that among all the local Hodge loci associated to a non-linear cycle passing through Fermat, the ones associated to a complete intersection cycle of type $(1,1,\ldots,1,2)$ attain the minimal possible codimension of their Zariski tangent s…
For a fixed integer $d$, we study here the locus of degree $d$ hypersurfaces $X$ in $\mathbb{P}^{2n+1}$ such that $H^{2n}(X,\mathbb{Q}) \cap H^{n,n}(X,\mathbb{C}) \not= \mathbb{Q}$. We call this locus \textit{the Noether-Lefschetz locus}. Any irreducible component of this locus is locally a Hodge locus. So, we see that the study of this locus is very closely related to the variational Hodge conjecture. In this article we show that the Hodge locus corresponding to the cohomology class of a complete intersection subscheme in $\mathbb{P}^{2n+1}$ of codimension $n+1$ and degree less than $d$ satis…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over a finite field $\F$. We discuss the unramified cohomology group $H^3_\nr(X,\Q/\Z(2))$. Several conjectures put together imply that this group is finite. For certain classes of threefolds, $H^3_\nr(X,\Q/\Z(2))$ actually vanishes. It is an open question whether this holds true for arbitrary threefolds. For a threefold $X$ equipped with a fibration onto a curve $C$, the generic fibre of which is a smooth projective surface $V$ over the global field $\F(C)$, the vanishing of $H^3_\nr(X,\Q/\Z(2))$ together with the Tate conjecture for divisors on $X$ impl…
Suppose that 2d-2 tangent lines to the rational normal curve z\mapsto (1 : z : ... : z^d) in d-dimensional complex projective space are given. It was known that the number of codimension 2 subspaces intersecting all these lines is always finite; for a generic configuration it is equal to the d^{th} Catalan number. We prove that for real tangent lines, all these codimension 2 subspaces are also real, thus confirming a special case of a general conjecture of B. and M. Shapiro. This is equivalent to the following result: If all critical points of a rational function lie on a circle in the Riemann…
We give a positive answer to a conjecture of Aluffi-Harris on the computation of the Euclidean distance degree of a possibly singular projective variety in terms of the local Euler obstruction function.
Let $k$ be a perfect field and let $X\subset {\mathbb P}^N$ be a hypersurface of degree $d$ defined over $k$ and containing a linear subspace $L$ defined over an algebraic closure $\overline{k}$ with $\mathrm{codim}_{{\mathbb P}^N}L=r$. We show that $X$ contains a linear subspace $L_0$ defined over $k$ with $\mathrm{codim}_{{\mathbb P}^N}L\le dr$. We conjecture that the intersection of all linear subspaces (over $\overline{k}$) of minimal codimension $r$ contained in $X$, has codimension bounded above only in terms of $r$ and $d$. We prove this when either $d\le 3$ or $r\le 2$.
We show that for every smooth generic projective hypersurface $X\subset\mathbb P^{n+1}$, there exists a proper subvariety $Y\subsetneq X$ such that $\operatorname{codim}_X Y\ge 2$ and for every non constant holomorphic entire map $f\colon\mathbb C\to X$ one has $f(\mathbb C)\subset Y$, provided $°X\ge 2^{n^5}$. In particular, we obtain an effective confirmation of the Kobayashi conjecture for threefolds in $\mathbb P^4$.
The conjecture stated by Carayol in [{\em Non-abelian Lubin-Tate theory.} Automorphic forms, Shimura varieties and $L$-functions, vol II: 15--39, Academic Press,1990] predicted that the {\em supercuspidal part} of the l-adic cohomology of the moduli spaces classifying certain formal groups introduced by Drinfeld would provide a simultaneaous "realization" of Langlands and Jacquet-Langlands local correspondences for {\em supercuspidal} representations of $GL_d$. By works of Harris, Boyer, Harris-Taylor and Hausberger, this conjecture is now proved. On another hand, recent works by Boyer and Fal…
