Curves on threefolds and a conjecture of Griffiths-Harris

We prove that any arithmetically Gorenstein curve on a smooth, general hypersurface $X\subset \bbP^{4}$ of degree at least 6, is a complete intersection. This gives a characterisation of complete intersection curves on general type hypersurfaces in $\bbP^4$. We also verify that certain 1-cycles on a general quintic hypersurface are non-trivial elements of the Griffiths group.

On a conjecture due to Griffiths and Harris

For a fixed $d \ge 5$, the Noether-Lefschetz locus parametrizes smooth degree $d$ surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ with Picard number greater than $1$. This is a countable union of proper algebraic varieties. It is known (due to works of Voisin, Green and others) that the largest irreducible component is of codimension (in the space of all smooth surface in $\mathbb{P}^3$ of degree $d$) equal to $d-3$. Fubini-Griffiths-Harris rigidity and Lie algebra cohomology

We prove a general extrinsic rigidity theorem for homogeneous varieties in $\mathbb{CP}^N$. The theorem is used to show that the adjoint variety of a complex simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ (the unique minimal G orbit in $\mathbb{P}\mathfrak{g}$) is extrinsically rigid to third order. In contrast, we show that the adjoint variety of $SL_3\mathbb{C}$, and the Segre product $\mathit{Seg}(\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^n)$, both varieties with osculating sequences of length two, are flexible at order two. Cayley-Bacharach theorems with excess vanishing

Gauss-Manin connection in disguise: Noether-Lefschetz and Hodge loci

We give a classification of components of the Hodge locus in any parameter space of smooth projective varieties. This is done using determinantal varieties constructed from the infinitesimal variation of Hodge structures (IVHS) of the underlying family.
