In this paper, we study the homotopy groups of a shrinking wedge $X$ of a sequence $\{X_j\}$ of non-simply connected CW-complexes. Using a combination of generalized covering space theory and shape theory, we construct a canonical homomorphism $$Θ:π_n(X)\to\prod_{j\in\mathbb{N}}\bigoplus_{π_1(X)/π_1(X_j)}π_n(X_j),$$ characterize its image, and prove that $Θ$ is injective whenever each universal cover $\widetilde{X}_j$ is $(n-1)$-connected. These results (1) provide a characterization of the $n$-th homotopy group of the shrinking wedge of copies of $\mathbb{RP}^n$, (2) provide a characterization of $π_2$ of an arbitrary shrinking wedge, and (3) imply that a shrinking wedge of aspherical CW-complexes is aspherical.
As a step towards understanding the $\mathrm{tmf}$-based Adams spectral sequence, we compute the $K(1)$-local homotopy of $\mathrm{tmf} \wedge \mathrm{tmf}$, using a small presentation of $L_{K(1)}\mathrm{tmf}$ due to Hopkins. We also describe the $K(1)$-local $\mathrm{tmf}$-based Adams spectral sequence.
Let $A_1$ be any spectrum in a class of finite spectra whose mod $2$ cohomology is isomorphic to a free module of rank one over the subalgebra $\mathcal{A}(1)$ of the Steenrod algebra. Let $E_{C}$ be the second Morava-$E$ theory associated to a universal deformation of the formal completion of the supersingular elliptic curve $(C) : y^{2}+y = x^{3}$ defined over $\mathbb{F}_{4}$ and $G_{24}$ a maximal finite subgroup of automorphism group $\mathbb{S}_{C}$ of the formal completion of $C$. In this paper, we compute the homotopy groups of $E_{C}^{hG_{24}}\wedge A_1$ by means of the homotopy fixed…
We introduce general methods to analyse the Goodwillie tower of the identity functor on a wedge $X \vee Y$ of spaces (using the Hilton-Milnor theorem) and on the cofibre $\mathrm{cof}(f)$ of a map $f: X \rightarrow Y$. We deduce some consequences for $v_n$-periodic homotopy groups: whereas the Goodwillie tower is finite and converges in periodic homotopy when evaluated on spheres (Arone-Mahowald), we show that neither of these statements remains true for wedges and Moore spaces.
For a connected CW-complex, we let $SNT(X)$ be the set of all homotopy types $[Y]$ such that the Postnikov approximations $X^{(n)}$ and $Y^{(n)}$ of $X$ and $Y$, respectively, are homotopy equivalent for all positive integers $n$. In 1992, McGibbon and Møller (\cite[page 287]{MM}) raised the following question: Is $SNT(Σ\mathbb C P^\infty) = *$ or not? In this article, we give an answer to the more generalized version of this query: The set of all the same $n$-types of the suspended wedge sum of the Eilenberg-MacLane spaces of various types of both even and odd integers is the set which consis…
The aim of this paper is to give a (discrete) Morse theoretic proof of the fact that the $k$-th skeleton of the flag complex $\mathcal{F}$, associated to the lattice of subspaces of a finite dimensional vector space, is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres of dimension $\min\{k,\dim(\mathcal{F})\}$. The tight control provided by Morse theoretic methods allows us to give an explicit formula for the number of spheres appearing in each of these wedge summands.
We describe a homotopy-theoretic approach to the theory of moduli of realizations of Blanc-Dwyer-Goerss, reproducing their obstructions to realizing a given $Π$-algebra as homotopy groups of a pointed space. Our techniques are based on the $\infty$-category $\mathcal{P}_Σ(\mathcal{S}ph)$ of product-preserving presheaves on finite wedges of positive-dimensional spheres, leading to more conceptual and streamlined arguments.
We show that the independence complexes of generalised Mycielskian of complete graphs are homotopy equivalent to a wedge sum of spheres, and determine the number of copies and the dimensions of these spheres. We also prove that the independence complexes of categorical product of complete graphs are wedge sum of circles, upto homotopy. Further, we show that if we perturb a graph $G$ in a certain way, then the independence complex of this new graph is homotopy equivalent to the suspension of the independence complex of $G$.
Combinatorially and stochastically defined simplicial complexes often have the homotopy type of a wedge of spheres. A prominent conjecture of Kahle quantifies this precisely for the case of random flag complexes. We explore whether such properties might extend to graphs arising from nature. We consider the brain network (as reconstructed by Varshney & al.) of the Caenorhabditis elegans nematode, an important model organism in biology. Using an iterative computational procedure based on elementary methods of algebraic topology, namely homology, simplicial collapses and coning operations, we sho…
We consider a certain class of simplicial complexes which includes the independence complexes of forests. We show that if a simplicial complex $K$ belongs to this class, then the polyhedral join $\mathcal{Z}^*_{K}(\underline{X}, \emptyset)$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge sum of CW complexes of the form $Σ^r X_{i_1} * X_{i_2} * \cdots * X_{i_k}$, where $\underline{X}$ is a family $\{X_i\}_{i \in V(K)}$ of CW complexes and $Σ$ denotes the unreduced suspension. This result is applied to study the homotopy type of the independence complex of the lexicographic product $G[H]$ of a graph $H$ over …
Let $\ell$ be a prime and $q = p^ν$ where $p$ is a prime different from $\ell$. We show that the $\ell$-completion of the $n$th stable homotopy group of spheres is a summand of the $\ell$-completion of the $(n, 0)$ motivic stable homotopy group of spheres over the finite field with $q$ elements $F_q$. With this, and assisted by computer calculations, we are able to explicitly compute the two-complete stable motivic stems $π_{n, 0}(F_q)^{\wedge}_2$ for $0\leq n\leq 18$. Additionally, we compute $π_{19, 0}(F_q)^{\wedge}_2$ and $π_{20, 0}(F_q)^{\wedge}_2$ when $q \equiv 1 \bmod 4$ assuming Morel'…
We define and study binary operations for homotopy groups with coefficients. We give conditions to prove that certain binary operations are the homomorphic image of the generalized Whitehead product. This allows carrying over properties of the generalized Whitehead product to these operations. We discuss two classes of binary operations, the Whitehead products and the Torsion products. We introduce a new class of operations called Ext operations and determine some of its properties. We compare the Torsion product to the Whitehead product in a special case. We prove that the smash product of tw…
Let $p$ be a prime, $n \geq 1$, $K(n)$ the $n$th Morava $K$-theory spectrum, $\mathbb{G}_n$ the extended Morava stabilizer group, and $K(A)$ the algebraic $K$-theory spectrum of a commutative $S$-algebra $A$. For a type $n+1$ complex $V_n$, Ausoni and Rognes conjectured that (a) the unit map $i_n: L_{K(n)}(S^0) \to E_n$ from the $K(n)$-local sphere to the Lubin-Tate spectrum induces a map \[K(L_{K(n)}(S^0)) \wedge v_{n+1}^{-1}V_n \to (K(E_n))^{h\mathbb{G}_n} \wedge v_{n+1}^{-1}V_n\] that is a weak equivalence, where (b) since $\mathbb{G}_n$ is profinite, $(K(E_n))^{h\mathbb{G}_n}$ denotes a co…
We study modules over the commutative ring spectrum $H\mathbb F_2\wedge H\mathbb F_2$, whose coefficient groups are quotients of the dual Steenrod algebra by collections of the Milnor generators. We show that very few of these quotients admit algebra structures, but those that do can be constructed simply: killing a generator $ξ_k$ in the category of associative algebras freely kills the higher generators $ξ_{k+n}$. Using new information about the conjugation operation in the dual Steenrod algebra, we also consider quotients by families of Milnor generators and their conjugates. This allows us…
We prove that independence complex of a bipartite circle graph is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres, resolving a conjecture posed by Przytycki and Silvero. As a corollary, we obtain that extreme Khovanov spectrum, $\mathcal{X}_{j_{extreme}}$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres. In particular, the extreme Khovanov homology has no torsion.
Given a closed, smooth, connected, orientable $4$-manifold $M$, whose integral homology groups can have $2$-torsion, we determine the homotopy decomposition of the double suspension $Σ^2M$ as wedge sums of some elementary $\mathbf{A}_3^3$-complexes, which are $2$-connected finite complexes of dimension at most $6$. Furthermore, we utilize the Postnikov square (or equivalently Pontryagin square) to find sufficient conditions for the homotopy decompositions of $Σ^2M$ to desuspend to that of $ΣM$.
For $r\geq 1$, the $r$-independence complex of a graph $G$, denoted Ind$_r(G)$, is a simplicial complex whose faces are subsets $A \subseteq V(G)$ such that each component of the induced subgraph $G[A]$ has at most $r$ vertices. In this article, we establish a relation between the distance $r$-domination number of $G$ and (homological) connectivity of Ind$_r(G)$. We also prove that Ind$_r(G)$, for a chordal graph $G$, is either contractible or homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres. Given a wedge of spheres, we also provide a construction of a chordal graph whose $r$-independence complex ha…
Let $D_{n,γ}$ be the complex of graphs on $n$ vertices and domination number at least $γ$. We prove that $D_{n,n-2}$ has the homotopy type of a finite wedge of 2-spheres. This is done by using discrete Morse theory techniques. Acyclicity of the needed matching is proved by introducing a relativized form of a well known method for constructing acyclic matchings on suitable chunks of simplices. Our approach allows us to extend our results to the realm of infinite graphs. In addition, we give evidence supporting the assertion that the homotopy equivalences $D_{n,n-1}\simeq\bigvee S^0$ and $D_{n,n…
We describe the homotopy types of Vietoris-Rips complexes of hypercube graphs at small scale parameters. In more detail, let $Q_n$ be the vertex set of the hypercube graph with $2^n$ vertices, equipped with the shortest path metric. Equivalently, $Q_n$ is the set of all binary strings of length $n$, equipped with the Hamming distance. The Vietoris-Rips complex of $Q_n$ at scale parameter zero is $2^n$ points, and the Vietoris-Rips complex of $Q_n$ at scale parameter one is the hypercube graph, which is homotopy equivalent to a wedge sum of circles. We show that the Vietoris-Rips complex of $Q_…
For $r\geq 1$, the $r$-independence complex of a graph $G$ is a simplicial complex whose faces are subset $I \subseteq V(G)$ such that each component of the induced subgraph $G[I]$ has at most $r$ vertices. In this article, we determine the homotopy type of $r$-independence complexes of certain families of graphs including complete $s$-partite graphs, fully whiskered graphs, cycle graphs and perfect $m$-ary trees. In each case, these complexes are either homotopic to a wedge of equi-dimensional spheres or are contractible. We also give a closed form formula for their homotopy types.
In a 2009 paper, Dave Benson gave a description in purely algebraic terms of the mod $p$ homology of $Ω(BG^\wedge_p)$, when $G$ is a finite group, $BG^\wedge_p$ is the $p$-completion of its classifying space, and $Ω(BG^\wedge_p)$ is the loop space of $BG^\wedge_p$. The main purpose of this work is to shed new light on Benson's result by extending it to a more general setting. As a special case, we show that if $\mathcal{C}$ is a small category, $|\mathcal{C}|$ is the geometric realization of its nerve, $R$ is a commutative ring, and $|\mathcal{C}|^+_R$ is a "plus construction" for $|\mathcal{C…
We determine the homotopy types of the independence complexes of the $(n \times 6)$-square grid graphs. In fact, we show that these complexes are homotopy equivalent to wedges of spheres.
A multipath in a directed graph is a disjoint union of paths. The multipath complex of a directed graph ${\tt G}$ is the simplicial complex whose faces are the multipaths of ${\tt G}$. We compute the Euler characteristic, and associated generating function, of the multipath complex for some families of graphs, including transitive tournaments and complete bipartite graphs. Then, we compute the homotopy type of multipath complexes of linear graphs, polygons, small grids and transitive tournaments. We show that they are all contractible or wedges of spheres. We introduce a new technique for deco…
A space $X$ is "sequentially $n$-connected" at $x\in X$ if for every $0\leq k\leq n$ and sequence of maps $f_1,f_2,f_3,\dots:S^k\to X$ that converges toward a point $x\in X$, the maps $f_m$ contract by a sequence of null-homotopies that converge toward $x$. We use this property, in conjunction with the Whitney Covering Lemma, as a foundation for developing new methods for characterizing higher homotopy groups of finite dimensional Peano continua. Among many new computations, a culminating result of this paper is: if $Y$ is a space obtained by attaching an infinite shrinking sequence $A_1,A_2,A…
Let $X$ be a connected space. An element $[f]\in π_n(X)$ is called rationally inert if $π_*(X)\otimes \mathbb Q \to π_*(X\cup_fD^{n+1})\otimes \mathbb Q$ is surjective. We extend the results obtained in the simply connected case, and prove in particular that if $X\cup_fD^{n+1}$ is a Poincaré duality complex and the algebra $H(X)$ requires at least two generators then $[f]\in π_n(X)$ is rationally inert. On the other hand, if $X$ is rationally a wedge of at least two spheres and $f$ is rationally non trivial, then $f$ is rationally inert. Finally if $f$ is rationally inert then the rational hom…
We consider families of simple polytopes $P$ and simplicial complexes $K$ well-known in polytope theory and convex geometry, and show that their moment-angle complexes have some remarkable homotopy properties which depend on combinatorics of the underlying complexes and algebraic properties of their Stanley--Reisner rings. We introduce infinite series of Golod and minimally non-Golod simplicial complexes $K$ with moment-angle complexes $\mathcal Z_K$ having free integral cohomology but not homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres or a connected sum of products of spheres respectively. We then…
