There are several possible choices of the time parameter for the canonical description of a self-gravitating thin shell, but quantum thories built on different time parameters lead to unitarily inequivalent descriptions. We compare the quantum collapse of a thin dust shell in two different times {\it viz.,} the time coordinate in the interior of the shell (originally addressed in \cite{hajicek92a}) and the time coordinate of the comoving observer (proper time). In each case, we obtain exact solutions to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation requiring only a finite and well behaved $U(1)$ current. The two quantum theories are complementary and each highlights the role played by the Planck mass: stationary states of positive energy in interior time exist only if the shell rest mass in smaller than the Planck mass. In proper time they exist only when the shell rest mass is {\it greater} than the Planck mass. In coordinate time there are both scattering states and bound states with a well defined energy spectrum. In the proper time description there are only bound states, whose spectrum we determine.
We reconsider some fundamental problems of the thin shell model. First, we point out that the "cut and paste" construction does not guarantee a well-defined manifold because there is no overlap of coordinates across the shell. When one requires that the spacetime metric across the thin shell is continuous, it also provides a way to specify the tangent space and the manifold. Other authors have shown that this specification leads to the conservation laws when shells collide. On the other hand, the well-known areal radius $r$ seems to be a perfect coordinate covering all regions of a spherically…
This paper is dedicated to revisit the modifications caused by branes in the collapse of a stellar structure under the Snyder-Oppenheimer scheme. Due to the homogeneity and isotropy of the model, we choose study the case of a closed geometry described by $k=1$, through the tool of dynamical systems. We revisit the different components of the star and its evolution during the stellar collapse, paying particular attention to the non-local effects and the quadratic terms of the energy momentum tensor that come from branes corrections. In the same vein we realize a phase portrait together with a s…
We consider the gravastar model where the vacuum phase transition between the de Sitter interior and the Schwarzschild or Schwarzschild-de Sitter exterior geometries takes place at a single spherical delta-shell. We derive sharp analytic bounds on the surface compactness (2m/r) that follow from the requirement that the dominant energy condition (DEC) holds at the shell. In the case of Schwarzschild exterior, the highest surface compactness is achieved with the stiff shell in the limit of vanishing (dark) energy density in the interior. In the case of Schwarzschild-de Sitter exterior, in additi…
We initiate the hunt for a definition of Hamiltonian constraint in Euclidean Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) which faithfully represents quantum Dirac algebra. Borrowing key ideas from previous works on Hamiltonian constraint in LQG and several toy models, we present some evidence that there exists such a continuum Hamiltonian constraint operator which is well defined on a suitable generalization of the Lewandowski-Marolf Habitat and is anomaly free off-shell.
This paper investigates the dynamics of thin-shell in the presence of perfect fluid as well as the scalar field. We formulate the equations of motion using Israel thin-shell formalism by taking the interior and exterior regions of Schwarzschild, Kerr as well as Kerr-Newmann black hole. We find numerical solutions of equations of motion and effective potential to analyze the scalar shell for collapse and expansion. It is found that the rate of collapse and expansion of scalar shell through shell's radius depends on charge and rotation parameters. We conclude that the massive scalar shell leads …
Solutions describing the gravitational collapse of asymptotically flat cylindrical and prolate shells of (null) dust are shown to admit globally naked singularities.
In three-dimensional AdS space, we consider the gravitational collapse of dust shell and then investigate the quantum radiation from the collapsing shell by employing the functional Schrödinger formalism. In the formation of the BTZ black hole, the interior geometry of the shell can be chosen as either the massless black hole or the global AdS space. In the incipient black hole limit, we obtain the wave function exactly from the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a massless scalar field. Then, we show that the occupation number of excited states can be written by analytic expressions, and…
We studied the gravitational collapse of a shell of dust in shape dynamics. We found out static and oscillatory solutions. In the large momentum limit we found out that the shell never reaches the singularity when the momentum of the shell is much larger than the mass of the shell in magnitude. The shell does not reach to the origin in a finite amount of time however when the momentum of the shell becomes comparable to minus the mass of shell, the large momentum approximation breaks down. Therefore more detailed future works hopefully may be able to answer the question of singularity formation…
We study the gravitational collapse of a rotating cylindrical null shell with flat interior and the metric of a spinning cosmic string as the exterior. We see that there is a critical radius, where the energy density of the shell vanishes and beyond which it would be negative, thereby signaling that the matching would be unphysical.
A simple self gravitating system --- a thin spherical shell of charged pressureless matter --- is naively quantized as a test case of quantum gravitational collapse. The model is interpreted in terms of an inner product on the positive energy states. An S-matrix is constructed describing scattering between negatively and positively infinite radius.
Quantum-mechanical model of self-gravitating dust shell is considered. To clarify the relation between classical and quantum spacetime which the shell collapse form, we consider various time slicing on which quantum mechanics is developed. By considering the static time slicing which corresponds to an observer at a constant circumference radius, we obtain the wave functions of the shell motion and the discrete mass spectra which specify the global structures of spherically symmetric spacetime formed by the shell collapse. It is found that wormhole states are forbidden when the rest mass is com…
This paper considers the quantum collapse of infinitesimally thin dust shells in 2+1 gravity. In 2+1 gravity a shell is no longer a sphere but a ring of matter. The classical equation of motion has been considered by Peleg and Steif and Cristosomo and Olea. The minisuperspace quantum problem can be reduced to that of a harmonic oscillator in terms of the curvature radius of the shell, allowing the use of well-known methods to find the motion of coherent wave packets that give the quantum collapse of the shell. Classically, as the radius of the shell falls below a certain point, a horizon forms…
This paper investigates the polytropic matter shell collapse in the non-commutative Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{o}$m geometry. Using the Israel criteria, equation of motion for the polytropic matter shell is derived. In order to explore the physical aspects of this equation, the most general equation of state, $p=kρ^{({1+\frac{1}{n}})}$, has been used for finite and infinite values of $n$. The effective potentials corresponding to the equation of motion have been used to explain different states of the matter shell collapse. The numerical solution of the equation of motion predicts collapse as well…
The general formulas of a non-rotating dynamic thin shell that connects two arbitrary cylindrical regions are given using Israel's method. As an application of them, the dynamics of a thin shell made of counter-rotating dust particles, which emits both gravitational waves and massless particles when it is expanding or collapsing, is studied. It is found that when the models represent a collapsing shell, in some cases the angular momentum of the dust particles is strong enough to halt the collapse, so that a spacetime singularity is prevented from forming, while in other cases it is not, and a …
A new model is proposed to a collapsing star consisting of an anisotropic fluid with bulk viscosity, radial heat flow and outgoing radiation. In a previous paper one of us has introduced a function time dependent into the $g_{rr}$, besides the time dependent metric functions $g_{θθ}$ and $g_{ϕϕ}$. The aim of this work is to generalize this previous model by introducing bulk viscosity and compare it to the non-viscous collapse. The behavior of the density, pressure, mass, luminosity and the effective adiabatic index is analyzed. Our work is also compared to the case of a collapsing fluid with b…
Gravitational collapse of matter in the presence of rotation is a mostly unexplored topic but it might have important implications for cosmic censorship. Recently a convenient setup was identified to address this problem, by considering thin matter shells at the interface between two equal angular momenta Myers-Perry spacetimes in five dimensions. This note provides more details about the matching of such cohomogeneity-1 spacetimes and extends the results obtained therein to arbitrary higher odd dimensions. It is also pointed out that oscillatory orbits for shells in asymptotically flat spacet…
The well-known moving mirror trajectory corresponding to black hole shell collapse scenario (BHC) appears to produce an infinite amount of energy. By changing the final velocity of the BHC mirror from the speed of light to a free variable $ξ$ a new mirror trajectory was found. This modified BHC mirror produces finite energy and emits thermal radiation. In the limit of $ξ\to c$ the BHC mirror is restored. In this thesis, the energy and particle production of the modified BHC mirror, as well as the correlations in its radiation, are presented.
In a recent paper, one of us studied spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat solutions of Shape Dynamics, finding that the spatial metric has characteristics of a wormhole - two asymptotically flat ends and a minimal-area sphere, or `throat', in between. In this paper we investigate whether that solution can emerge as a result of gravitational collapse of matter. With this goal, we study the simplest kind of spherically-symmetric matter: an infinitely-thin shell of dust. Our system can be understood as a model of a star accreting a thin layer of matter. We solve the dynamics of the shell ex…
We give a characterization of the central shell-focusing curvature singularity that can form in the spherical gravitational collapse of a bounded matter distribution obeying the dominant energy condition. This characterization is based on the limiting behaviour of the mass function in the neighbourhood of the singularity. Depending on the rate of growth of the mass as a function of the area radius R, the singularity may be either covered or naked. The singularity is naked if this growth rate is slower than R, covered if it is faster than R, and either naked or covered if the growth rate is sam…
In case of spherical symmetry, the assumptions of finite-time formation of a trapped region and regularity of its boundary --- the apparent horizon --- are sufficient to identify the form of the metric and energy-momentum tensor in its vicinity. By comparison with the known results for quasistatic evaporation of black holes, we complete the identification of their parameters. Consistency of the Einstein equations allows only two possible types of higher-order terms in the energy-momentum tensor. By using its local conservation, we provide a method of calculation of the higher-order terms, expl…
Gravitational collapse of radiation in an anti-de Sitter background is studied. For the spherical case, the collapse proceeds in much the same way as in the Minkowski background, i.e., massless naked singularities may form for a highly inhomogeneous collapse, violating the cosmic censorship, but not the hoop conjecture. The toroidal, cylindrical and planar collapses can be treated together. In these cases no naked singularity ever forms, in accordance with the cosmic censorship. However, since the collapse proceeds to form toroidal, cylindrical or planar black holes, the hoop conjecture in an …
We study in some detail the properties of the mathematically correct formulation of the classical Einstein-Rosen "bridge" as proposed in the original 1935 paper, which was shown in a series of previous papers of ours to represent the simplest example of a static spherically symmetric traversable lightlike thin-shell wormhole. Thus, the original Einstein-Rosen "bridge" is not equivalent to the concept of the dynamical and non-traversable Schwarzschild wormhole, also called "Einstein-Rosen bridge" in modern textbooks on general relativity. The original Einstein-Rosen "bridge" requires the presen…
While studying the continual gravitational collapse of a massive matter cloud in general relativity towards examining collapse final states, an important issue is that of whether shell-crossing singularities can develop as the collapse evolves. We examine this here to show that for any spherically symmetric collapse in general, there is always a finite neighborhood of the center in which there are no shell-crossings taking place. It follows that in order to study the final genuine shell-focusing singularity of collapse where the physical radius of the matter cloud shrinks to a vanishing value,…
Gravitational collapse singularities are undesirable, yet inevitable to a large extent in General Relativity. When matter satisfying null energy condition collapses to the extent a closed trapped surface is formed, a singularity is inevitable according to Penrose's singularity theorem. Since positive mass vacuum solutions are generally black holes with trapped surfaces inside the event horizon, matter cannot collapse to an arbitrarily small size without generating a singularity. However, in modified theories of gravity where positive mass vacuum solutions are naked singularities with no trappe…
A model for a possible variable cosmic object is presented. The model consists of a massive shell surrounding a compact object. The gravitational and self-gravitational forces tend to collapse the shell, but the internal tangential stresses oppose the collapse. The combined action of the two types of forces is studied and several cases are presented. In particular, we investigate the spherically symmetric case in which the shell oscillates radially around a central compact object.
The gravitational collapse of a thick cylindrical shell of dust matter is investigated. It is found that a spacetime singularity forms on the symmetry axis and that it is necessarily naked, i.e., observable in principle. We propose a physically reasonable boundary condition at this naked singularity to construct the solution including its causal future. This boundary condition enables us to construct the unique continuation of spacetime beyond the naked singularity and ensures that the dust shell passes through the naked singularity. When the cylindrical shell leaves its symmetry axis away, th…
We consider the Hawking-Page phase transition between the BTZ black hole of $M \ge 0$ and the thermal soliton of $M=-1$. In this system, there exists a mass gap so that there does not seem to exist a continuous thermodynamic phase transition. We consistently construct the off-shell free energies of the black hole and the soliton by properly taking into account the conical space. And then, the continuous off-shell free energy to describe tunneling effect can be realized through non-equilibrium solitons.
A class of solutions to Einstein field equations is studied, which represents gravitational collapse of thick spherical shells made of self-similar and shear-free fluid with heat flow. It is shown that such shells satisfy all the energy conditions, and the corresponding collapse always forms naked singularities.
We describe the quasi-static collapse of a radiating, spherical shell of matter in de Sitter space-time using a thermodynamical formalism. It is found that the specific heat at constant area and other thermodynamical quantities exhibit singularities related to phase transitions during the collapse.
Gravitational collapse of radiation shells in a non self-similar higher dimensional spherically symmetric spacetime is studied. Strong curvature naked singularities form for a highly inhomogeneous collapse, violating the cosmic censorship conjecture. As a special case, self similar models can be constructed.
A method is presented which allows for the numerical computation of the stress-energy tensor for a quantized massless minimally coupled scalar field in the region outside the event horizon of a 4D Schwarzschild black hole that forms from the collapse of a null shell. This method involves taking the difference between the stress-energy tensor for the in state in the collapsing null shell spacetime and that for the Unruh state in Schwarzschild spacetime. The construction of the modes for the in vacuum state and the Unruh state is discussed. Applying the method, the renormalized stress-energy ten…
Interaction / collision of two concentric spherical thin-shells of linear fluid resulting in collapse has been considered recently. We show that addition of finely tuned electric charges on the shells apart from the cosmological constant serves to delay the collapse indefinitely, yielding an ever colliding system of two concentric fluid shells. Given the finely tuned charges this provides an example of a perpetual two-body motion in general relativity.
It is shown that the models of white hole interacting with external matter can be made stable by introduction of a negative central mass. Similar results are obtained for the models of white hole, interacting with null shells, with radial flows of matter and with photon gas. In realistic models, a naked timelike singularity corresponding to the negative mass is hidden under a coat of positive mass, providing an extremely strong redshift for photons born in the Planck neighborhood of the singularity and observed at infinity, thereby realizing the principle of cosmic censorship in a relaxed form…
If we consider the gravitational collapse of a material object to a black hole, we would expect, for ranges of mass where a black hole would form, the following scenario. A large enough object would collapse classically until an event horizon forms, and to an external observer the object would be lost fom view. However, once the horizon has formed the black hole will begin to emit Hawking radiation and the hole will lose mass and the horizon will shrink. The final state of this process could be either a zero-mass "black hole" with consequent information loss, or some sort of "quantum remnant. …
We investigate existence and properties of trapped surfaces in two models of collapsing null dust shells within the Gibbons-Penrose construction. In the first model, the shell is initially a prolate spheroid, and the resulting singularity forms at the ends first (relative to a natural time slicing by flat hyperplanes), in analogy with behavior found in certain prolate collapse examples considered by Shapiro and Teukolsky. We give an explicit example in which trapped surfaces are present on the shell, but none exist prior to the last flat slice, thereby explicitly showing that the absence of tr…
We adopt a simplified model describing the collapse of a spherical thin-shell capacitor to give an analytical description how gravitational energy is converted to both kinetic and electric energies in the gravitational collapse. It is shown that (i) averaged kinetic and electric energies are the same order, about an half of gravitational energy of spherical thin-shell capacitor in the collapse; (ii) caused by radiating and rebuilding electric energy, the gravitational collapse undergoes a sequence of "on and off" hopping steps in the microscopic Compton scale. Although the collapse process is …
We study the end stages of gravitational collapse of the thin shell of matter in ingoing Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates. We use the functional Schrodinger formalism to capture quantum effects in the near singularity limit. We find that that the equations of motion which govern the behavior of the collapsing shell near the classical singularity become strongly non-local. This reinforces previous arguments that quantum gravity in the strong field regime might be non-local. We managed to solve the non-local equation of motion for the dust shell case, and found an explicit form of the wavefunct…
We perform Hamiltonian reduction of a model in which 2+1 dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant is coupled to a cylindrically symmetric dust shell. The resulting action contains only a finite number of degrees of freedom. The phase space consists of two copies of $ADS^2$ -- both coordinate and momentum space are curved. Different regions in the Penrose diagram can be identified with different patches of $ADS^2$ momentum space. Quantization in the momentum representation becomes particularly simple in the vicinity of the horizon, where one can neglect momentum non-commutativity…
I present the first analytical study of gravitational collapse in a compact CMC foliation with $S^3$ spatial topology. The solutions I find, in this context, will be both solutions of Shape Dynamics and General Relativity. The aim is to describe a system undergoing gravitational collapse in Shape Dynamics, so a well-justified and useful simplification is to assume spherical symmetry. This kills all the local gravitational degrees of freedom, but some nontrivial degrees of freedom are recovered by introducing matter. The simplest form of matter is infinitely thin spherical shells of dust, of wh…
A class of spherical collapsing exact solutions with electromagnetic charge is derived. This class of solutions -- in general anisotropic -- contains however as a particular case the charged dust model already known in literature. Under some regularity assumptions that in the uncharged case give rise to naked singularities, it is shown that the process of shell focusing singularities avoidance -- already known for the dust collapse -- also takes place here, determing shell crossing effects or a completely regular solution.
We model the collapse of a spherically symmetric, constant density, pressureless shell onto a preexisting black hole. Contrary to a recent claim of Liu and Zhang (2009), we show that an observer at infinity never sees any part of the shell cross the event horizon. The entire shell appears to "freeze" outside the black hole. We find that during intermediate stages of the collapse, the change in apparent size of the inner surface is non-monotonic. However, at late times, the apparent sizes of the inner and outer surfaces of the shell both approach 3\sqrt{3}GM/c^2 asymptotically, where M is the c…
To clarify observational consequence of bubble nucleations in inflationary era, we analyse dynamics of a spherical domain wall in an expanding universe. We consider a spherical shell of the domain wall with tension $σ$ collapsing in a spherically-symmetric dust universe, which is initially separated into the open Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universe inside the shell and the Einstein-de Sitter universe outside. The domain wall shell collapses due to the tension, and sweeps the dust fluid. The universe after the collapse becomes inhomogeneous and is described by the Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi…
We study the formation of the (noncommutative) Schwarzschild black hole from collapsing shell {of the} generalized matters containing polytropic and Chaplygin gas. We show that this collapsing shell depending on various parameters forms either a black hole or a naked singular shell with the help of the pressure.Furthermore, by considering the smeared gravitational sources, we investigate the noncommutative black holes formation. Though this mild noncommutative correction of matters cannot ultimately resolve the emergence of the naked singularity, we show that in some parameter region the colla…
We numerically study the dynamics of an imploding hollow cylinder composed of dust. Since there is no cylindrical black hole in 4-dimensional spacetime with physically reasonable energy conditions, a collapsed dust cylinder involves a naked singularity accompanied by its causal future, or a fatal singularity which terminates the history of the whole universe. In a previous paper, the present authors have shown that if the dust is assumed to be composed of collisionless particles such that these particles go through the symmetry axis of the cylinder, then the scalar polynomial singularity forme…
We study the collapse of a self-gravitating and radiating shell. Matter constituting the shell is quantized and the construction is viewed as a semiclassical model of possible black hole formation. It is shown that the shell internal degrees of freedom are excited by the quantum non-adiabaticity of the collapse and, consequently, on coupling them to a massless scalar field, the collapsing matter emits a burst of coherent (thermal) radiation.
We study the effect of charge on gravitational collapse of inhomogeneous dust cloud in the Einstein, Gauss-Bonnet and Lovelock gravity. Dynamics of the collapsing shell is analyzed. The conditions for the occurrence of bounce during collapse are given. We also show that shell crossing occurs inevitably if the shell near the center is weakly charged.
This paper is an extended version of a talk at the conference Constrained Dynamics and Quantum Gravity QG99. It reviews some work on the quantum collapse of the spherically symmetric gravitating thin shell of zero rest mass. Recent results on Kuchař decomposition are applied. The constructed version of quantum mechanics is unitary, although the shell falls under its Schwarzschild radius if its energy is high enough. Rather that a permanent black hole, something like a transient black and white hole pair seems to be created in such a case.
We study the collapse of a self-gravitating thick shell of bosons coupled to a scalar radiation field. Due to the non-adiabaticity of the collapse, the shell (quantum) internal degrees of freedom absorb energy from the (classical) gravitational field and are excited. The excitation energy is then emitted in the form of bursts of (thermal) radiation and the corresponding backreaction on the trajectory is estimated.
The thin shell collapse leading to the formation of charged rotating black holes in three dimensions is analyzed in the light of a recently developed Hamiltonian formalism for these systems. It is proposed to demand, as a way to reconcile the properties of an infinitely extended solenoid in flat space with a magnetic black hole in three dimensions, that the magnetic field should vanish just outside the shell. The adoption of this boundary condition results in an exterior solution with a magnetic field different from zero at a finite distance from the shell. The interior solution is also found …
We provide examples of gravitational collapse and black hole formation in AdS, either from collapsing matter shells or in analogy to the Oppenheimer-Sneider solution. We then investigate boundary properties of the corresponding states. In particular, we describe the boundary two-point function corresponding to a shell outside its horizon; if the shell is quasistatically lowered into the horizon, the resulting state is the Boulware state. We also describe the more physical Hartle-Hawking state, and discuss its connection to the quasistatic shell states and to thermalization on the boundary.
The full quantum mechanical collapse of a small relativistic dust shell is studied analytically, asymptotically and numerically starting from the exact finite dimensional classical reduced Hamiltonian recently derived by Háj{\'ı}ček and Kuchař. The formulation of the quantum mechanics encounters two problems. The first is the multivalued nature of the Hamiltonian and the second is the construction of an appropriate self adjoint momentum operator in the space of the shell motion which is confined to a half line. The first problem is solved by identifying and neglecting orbits of small action in…
The aim of this work is to analyze the dynamical behavior of relativistic infinite axial-symmetric shells with flat interior and a radiation filled curved exterior spacetimes. It will be proven, by the use of conservation equations of Israel, that the given configuration does not let expansion or collapse of the shell which was proposed before, but rather the shell stays at constant radius. The case of null-collapse will also be considered in this work and it will be shown that the shell collapses to zero radius, and moreover, if cylindrical flatness is imposed a boundary layer is obtained sti…
The semi-classical collapse, including lowest order back-reaction, of a thin shell of self-gravitating quantized matter is illustrated. The conditions for which self-gravitating matter forms a thin shell are first discussed and an effective Lagrangian for such matter is obtained. The matter-gravity system is then quantized, the semi-classical limit for gravitation is taken and the method of adiabatic invariants is applied to the resulting time dependent matter Hamiltonian. The governing equations are integrated numerically, for suitable initial conditions, in order to illustrate the effect of …
