Electron-beam plasma interaction has long been a topic of great interest. Despite the success of Quasi-Linear (QL) theory and Weak Turbulence (WT) theory, their validities are limited by the requirement of sufficiently dense mode spectrum and small wave amplitude. In this paper, we extensively studied the collective processes of a mono-energetic electron beam emitted from a thermionic cathode propagating through a cold plasma by performing a large number of high resolution two-dimensional (2D) particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations and using analytical theories. We confirm that the initial stage of two-stream instability is saturated due to well-known wave-trapping mechanism. Further evolution occurs due to strong wave-wave nonlinear processes. We show that the beam-plasma interaction can be classified into four different physical regimes in the parameter space for the plasma and beam parameters. The differences between the different regimes are analyzed in detail. For the first time, we identified a new regime in strong Langmuir turbulence featured by what we call Electron Modulational Instability (EMI) that could create a local Langmuir wave packet growing faster than the ion plasma frequency. Ions do not have time to respond to EMI in the initial growing stage. On a longer timescale, the action of the ponderomotive force produces very strong ion density perturbations, and eventually the beam-plasma wave interaction stops being resonant due to strong ion density perturbations. Consequently, in this EMI regime, electron beam-plasma interaction occurs in a periodic (intermittent) process. The beams are strongly scattered by waves, and the Langmuir wave spectrum is significantly broadened, which in turn gives rise to strong heating of bulk electrons. A resulting kappa distribution and a wave-energy spectrum, E^2 (k)~k^(-5), are observed in the strong turbulent regime.
Kinetic simulations and theory demonstrate that whistler waves can excite oblique, short-wavelength fluctuations through secondary drift instabilities if a population of sufficiently cold plasma is present. The excited modes lead to heating of the cold populations and damping of the primary whistler waves. The instability threshold depends on the density and temperature of the cold population and can be relatively small if the temperature of the cold population is sufficiently low. This mechanism may thus play a significant role in controlling amplitude of whistlers in the regions of the Earth…
Multi-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are used to study the generation of electrostatic shocks in plasma and the reflection of background ions to produce high-quality and high-energy ion beams. Electrostatic shocks are driven by the interaction of two plasmas with different density and/or relative drift velocity. The energy and number of ions reflected by the shock increase with increasing density ratio and relative drift velocity between the two interacting plasmas. It is shown that the interaction of intense lasers with tailored near-critical density plasmas allows for the efficient…
The problem of standing wave formation by superposing two counter-propagating whistler waves in an overdense plasma, studied recently by Sano et al. (Phys. Rev. E 100, 053205 (2019) and Phys. Rev. E 101, 013206 (2020)), has been revisited in the relativistic limit. A detailed theory along with simulation has been performed to study the standing wave formation in the interaction of two counter propagating relativistically intense whistler waves. The relativistic theory explains such interaction process more precisely and predicts correct field amplitudes of the standing wave for a much wider ra…
We develop a method for investigating the relationship between the shape of a 1-particle distribution and non-linear electrostatic oscillations in a collisionless plasma, incorporating transverse thermal motion. A general expression is found for the maximum sustainable electric field, and is evaluated for a particular highly anisotropic distribution.
We study the two component Fermi plasma. Two components are electrons and ions. Using the Quantum-Hydrodynamic model (QHD), we study the linear properties of electrostatic wave. We derive the linear dispersion relation for the system from dynamical governing equations for the system. We study the dependence of linear-dispersion relation on various parameters of the system.
Numerical and experimental evidence is given for the occurrence of the plateau states and concomitant corner modes proposed in \cite{valentini12}. It is argued that these states provide a better description of reality for small amplitude off-dispersion disturbances than the conventional Bernstein-Greene-Kruskal or cnoidal states such as those proposed in \cite{comment}
The excitation of electrostatic waves in plasma by laser electromagnetic pulse is important as it provides a scheme by which the power from the laser electromagnetic (EM) field can be transferred into the plasma medium. The paper presents a fundamentally new ponderomotive pressure-driven mechanism of excitation of electrostatic waves in an overdense magnetized plasma by a finite laser pulse. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations using the EPOCH-4.17.10 framework have been utilized for the study of a finite laser pulse interacting with a magnetized overdense plasma medium. The external magnetic fi…
We study collective processes for an electron beam propagating through a background plasma using simulations and analytical theory. A new regime where the instability of a Langmuir wave packet can grow locally much faster than ion frequency is clearly identified. The key feature of this new regime is an Electron Modulational Instability that rapidly creates a local Langmuir wave packet, which in its turn produces local charge separation and strong ion density perturbations because of the action of the ponderomotive force, such that the beam-plasma wave interaction stops being resonant. Three e…
The kinetic theory of collisionless electrostatic shocks resulting from the collision of plasma slabs with different temperatures and densities is presented. The theoretical results are confirmed by self-consistent particle-in-cell simulations, revealing the formation and stable propagation of electrostatic shocks with very high Mach numbers ($M \gg 10$), well above the predictions of the classical theories for electrostatic shocks.
A 1D2V open boundary Vlasov-Ampere code has been implemented with the aim of making a detailed investigation of the propagation of finite amplitude electromagnetic disturbances in an inhomogeneous magnetized plasma. The code is being applied to study the propagation of an externally driven electromagnetic signal, localized at one boundary of the integration interval, through a given equilibrium plasma configuration with inhomogeneous plasma density and magnetic field.
We present a derivation of the dispersion relation for electrostatic oscillations (ESOs) in a zero temperature quantum plasma. In the latter, degenerate electrons are governed by the Wigner equation, while non-degenerate ions follow the classical fluid equations. The Poisson equation determines the electrostatic wave potential. We consider parameters ranging from semiconductor plasmas to metallic plasmas and electron densities of compressed matter such as in laser-compression schemes and dense astrophysical objects. Due to the wave diffraction caused by overlapping electron wave function due t…
Boundary plasma physics plays an important role in tokamak confinement, but is difficult to simulate in a gyrokinetic code due to the scale-inseparable nonlocal multi-physics in magnetic separatrix and open magnetic field geometry. Neutral particles are also an important part of the boundary plasma physics. In the present paper, noble electrostatic gyrokinetic techniques to simulate the flux-driven, low-beta electrostatic boundary plasma is reported. Gyrokinetic ions and drift-kinetic electrons are utilized without scale-separation between the neoclassical and turbulence dynamics. It is found …
Trines and Norreys state that a principle aim of their work on warm wave-breaking was ``to create some order in the diverse landscape of warm fluid models and establish which model is most suitable for the study of wave breaking in thermal plasma.'' Unfortunately, we must conclude that they have obfuscated more than they have clarified, and have advanced the waterbag model only by exaggerating or misstating its benefits while mischaracterizing features of alternative warm fluid theories.
Three kinds of electrostatic modes are experimentally observed to propagate along magnetic-field lines for the first time in the pair-ion plasma consisting of only positive and negative fullerene ions with an equal mass. It is found that phase lags between the density fluctuations of positive and negative ions vary from 0 to $π$ depending on the frequency and is fixed at $π$ in the cases of ion acoustic and ion plasma waves, respectively. In addition, a new mode with the phase lag about $π$ appears in an intermediate-frequency band between the acoustic and plasma waves.
It is pointed out that the unmagnetized inhomogeneous plasmas can support a low frequency electromagnetic ion wave as a normal mode like Alfven wave of magnetized plasmas. But this is a coupled mode produced by the mixing of longitudinal and transverse components of perturbed electric field due to density inhomogeneity. The ion acoustic wave does not remain electrostatic in non-uniform plasmas. On the other hand, a low frequency electrostatic wave can also exist in the pure electron plasmas. But the magnetic field fluctuations in both electron as well as in electron-ion plasmas are coupled wit…
The motion of ions in the fields B = B_0 zhat and E = E_0 yhat cos(k_perp y - omega t) is considered. When omega >> Omega_i and v_perp > omega/k_perp, the equations of motion may be reduced to a set of difference equations. These equations exhibit stochastic behavior when E_0 exceeds a threshold. The diffusion coefficient above the threshold is determined. Far above the threshold, ion Landau damping is recovered. Extension of the method to include parallel propagation is outlined.
The external and independent control of plasma flow velocity shears parallel and perpendicular to magnetic field lines is realized using segmented collisionless-plasma sources. Electrostatic ion-cyclotron instabilities are observed to be suppressed by the perpendicular flow velocity shears, the suppression physics of which is found to be distinguished into two aspects. On the other hand, the parallel flow velocity shears are demonstrated to destabilize the ion-cyclotron instabilities depending on the sign of the parallel shear in the absence of field-aligned electron drift flow.
The nonlinear frequency shift is derived in a transparent asymptotic form for intense Langmuir waves in general collisionless plasma. The formula describes both fluid and kinetic effects simultaneously. The fluid nonlinearity is expressed, for the first time, through the plasma dielectric function, and the kinetic nonlinearity accounts for both smooth distributions and trapped-particle beams. Various known limiting scalings are reproduced as special cases. The calculation avoids differential equations and can be extended straightforwardly to other nonlinear plasma waves.
A standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation has been established by using the reductive perturbation method to investigate the propagation of electrostatic dust-acoustic waves, and their modulational instability as well as the formation of localized electrostatic envelope solitons in an electron depleted unmagnetized dusty plasma system comprising opposite polarity dust grains and super-thermal positive ions. The relevant physical plasma parameters (viz., charge, mass, number density of positive and negative dust grains, and super-thermality of the positive ions, etc.) have rigorous impact to re…
The existence and properties of phase-space structures in current-carrying pair plasmas is studied by means of the finite amplitude expressions of the pseudo-potential method. Emphasis is given to double layers, solitary structures and periodic waves. The results can be applied to electron-positron plasmas as well as to plasmas containing heavier charged particles with the same mass and opposite charges, such as fullerene ions and dust particles. They can also help to understand numerical simulations that showed the spontaneous formation of phase-space holes in linearly stable regimes.
The calculation presented in "Rotation Velocities and Radial Electric Field in the Plasma Edge" by W. M. Stacey [Contrib. Plasma Phys. 46, (2006)] contains an inconsistent treatment of the electrostatic potential. Comparing the expressions for the potential associated with the radial electrostatic field with that associated with the poloidal electrostatic field reveals the inconsistency. A field-theoretic perspective implies that the electrostatic field must vanish in a model based upon the physics of a neutral, conducting fluid.
The destabilizing role of neutrino beams on the Trivelpiece-Gould modes is considered, assuming electrostatic perturbations in a magnetized plasma composed by electrons in a neutralizing ionic background, coupled to a neutrino species by means of an effective neutrino force arising from the electro-weak interaction. The magnetic field is found to significantly improve the linear instability growth rate, as calculated for Supernova type II environments. On the formal level, for wave vector parallel or perpendicular to the magnetic field the instability growth rate is found from the unmagnetized…
The emergence of a density bump at the front of a collisionless electrostatic shock wave have been observed experimentally during the ablation of an aluminium foil by a femtosecond laser pulse. We have performed numerical simulations of the dynamics of this phenomena developing alongside the generation of a package of ion-acoustic waves, exposed to a continual flow of energetic electrons, in a collisionless plasma. We present the physical interpretation of the observed effects and show that the bump consists of transit particles, namely, the accelerated ions from the dense plasma layer, and th…
The electrostatic stability of electron-positron plasmas is investigated in the point-dipole and Z-pinch limits of dipole geometry. The kinetic dispersion relation for sub-bounce-frequency instabilities is derived and solved. For the zero-Debye-length case, the stability diagram is found to exhibit singular behavior. However, when the Debye length is non-zero, a fluid mode appears, which resolves the observed singularity, and also demonstrates that both the temperature and density gradients can drive instability. It is concluded that a finite Debye length is necessary to determine the stabilit…
A starting point for deriving the Vlasov equation is the BBGKY hierarchy that describes the dynamics of coupled marginal distribution functions. With a large value of the plasma parameter one can justify eliminating 2-point correlations in terms of the 1-point function in order to derive the Vlasov Landau Lenard Balescu (VLLB) theory. Because of the high dimensionality of the problem, numerically testing the assumptions of the VLLB theory is prohibitive. In these notes we propose a physically reasonable interaction model that lowers the dimensionality of the problem and may bring such computat…
We study the spatio-temporal evolution of the nonlinear electrostatic oscillations in a cold magnetized electron-positron (e-p) plasma using both analytics and simulations. Using a perturbative method we demonstrate that the nonlinear solutions change significantly when a pure electrostatic mode is excited at the linear level instead of a mixed upper-hybrid and zero-frequency mode that is considered in a recent study. The pure electrostatic oscillations undergo phase mixing nonlinearly. However, the presence of the magnetic field significantly delays the phase-mixing compared to that observed …
A linear gyrokinetic particle-in-cell scheme, which is valid for arbitrary perpendicular wavelength $k_\perpρ_i$ and includes the parallel dynamic along the field line, is developed to study the local electrostatic drift modes in point and ring dipole plasmas. We find the most unstable mode in this system can be either electron mode or ion mode. The properties and relations of these modes are studied in detail as a function of $k_\perpρ_i$, the density gradient $κ_n$, the temperature gradient $κ_T$, electron to ion temperature ratio $τ=T_e/T_i$, and mass ratio $m_i/m_e$. For conventional weak …
Motivated by the suggestion that Born-Infeld plasmas could have significance for electron acceleration in neutron star crusts, we obtain an upper bound on the amplitude of electrostatic waves propagating parallel to a longitudinal magnetic field in a Born-Infeld plasma.
We have performed three dimensional nonlinear fluid simulations of electron fluid turbulence at nanoscales in an unmagnetized warm dense plasma in which mode coupling between wave function and electrostatic potential associated with underlying electron plasma oscillations (EPOs) lead to nonlinear cascades in inertial range. While the wave function cascades towards smaller length scales, electrostatic potential follows an inverse cascade. We find from our simulations that quantum diffraction effect associated with a Bohm potential plays a critical role in determining the inertial range turbulen…
Abstract It is shown that electrostatic plasma wakefields can efficiently radiate at harmonics of the plasma frequency when the plasma has a positive density gradient along the propagation direction of a driver. The driver propagating at a sub-luminal group velocity excites the plasma wakefield with the same phase velocity. However, due to the positive density gradient, the wake phase velocity steadily increases behind the driver. As soon as the phase velocity becomes super-luminal, the electrostatic wakefield couples efficiently to radiative electromagnetic modes. The period of time when the …
The electrostatic perturbations in an unmagnetized, non-isothermal ($T_i{\ll}T_e$) electron-ion plasma shear flow are considered. New physical effects, arising due to the non-normality of linear dynamics, are described. It is shown that the velocity shear induces the extraction of the mean flow energy by the acoustic perturbations (ion-sound waves). The influence of the medium dispersion, rising due to the violation of quasineutrality for perturbations, is examined. It is shown that in the course of the evolution ion-sound waves turn into ion plasma oscillations. New class of nonperiodic, elec…
The nonlinear amplitude modulation of known electrostatic plasma modes is examined in a generic manner, by applying a collisionless fluid model. Both cold (zero-temperature) and warm fluid descriptions are discussed and the results are compared. The moderately nonlinear oscillation regime is investigated by applying a multiple scale technique. The calculation leads to a Nonlinear Schrodinger-type Equation (NLSE), which describes the evolution of the slowly varying wave amplitude in time and space. The NLSE admits localized envelope (solitary wave) solutions of bright- (pulses) or dark- (holes,…
Electrostatic two-stream instabilities play essential roles in an electrostatic collisionless shock formation. They are a key dissipation mechanism and result in ion heating and acceleration. Since the number and energy of the shock-accelerated ions depend on the instabilities, precise identification of the active instabilities is important. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations in a multicomponent plasma reveal ion reflection and acceleration at the shock front, excitation of a longitudinally propagating electrostatic instability due to a non-oscillating component of the electrostatic …
The formation of the gigantic dust-acoustic rouge waves (DARWs) in an electron depleted unmagnetized opposite polarity dusty plasma system is theoretically observed for the first time. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation (derived by utilizing the reductive perturbation method) has been analytically as well as numerically analyzed to identify the basic features (viz., height, thickness, and modulational instability, etc.) of DARWs. The results obtained form this investigation should be useful in understanding the basic properties of these rouge waves which can predict to be formed in electron de…
Solutions of the linearized Vlasov-Poisson equations for the electric field radiated by a time varying point charge in a three-dimensional, unbounded, spatially homogeneous plasma with a uniform background magnetic field and a uniform (static) flow velocity are expressed in terms of an equivalent integral equation in the time domain. For plasmas characterized by Maxwell distribution functions with isotropic temperatures, the kernel has a relatively simple mathematical form consisting only of elementary functions, exponential and trigonometric functions (sines and cosines), and no infinite sums…
It is pointed out that electron thermal fluctuations can couple with the ion acoustic mode in an inhomogeneous plasma to generate a low frequency ion time scale electromagnetic wave. This electromagnetic wave can become unstable if the temperature and density gradients are parallel to each other which can be the case in laser-plasmas similar to stellar cores. The comparisons of the present theoretical model with the previous investigations are also presented. The final result is applied to a classical laser induced plasma for illustration.
A fluid system is derived to describe electrostatic magnetized plasma turbulence at scales somewhat larger than the Larmor radius of a given species. It is related to the Hasegawa- Mima equation, but does not conserve enstrophy, and, as a result, exhibits a forward cascade of energy, to small scales. The inertial-range energy spectrum is argued to be shallower than a -11/3 power law, as compared to the -5 law of the Hasegawa-Mima enstrophy cascade. This property, confirmed here by direct numerical simulations of the fluid system, may help explain the fluctuation spectrum observed in gyrokineti…
Velocity distribution functions (VDFs) that exhibit a power-law dependence on the high-energy tail have been the subject of intense research by the plasma physics community. Such functions, known as kappa or superthermal distributions, have been found to provide a better fitting to the VDFs measured by spacecraft in the solar wind. One of the problems that is being addressed on this new light is the temperature anisotropy of solar wind protons and electrons. In the literature, the general treatment for waves excited by (bi-)Maxwellian plasmas is well-established. However, for kappa distributio…
The nonlinear propagation of electron-acoustic solitary structures is investigated in a plasma containing kappa-distributed (superthermal) electrons. Different types of localized structures are shown to exist. The occurrence of modulational instability is investigated.
The electron beam-plasma system is ubiquitous in the space plasma environment. Here, using a Darwin particle-in-cell method, the excitation of electrostatic and whistler instabilities by a gyrating electron beam is studied in support of recent laboratory experiments. It is assumed that the total plasma frequency $ω_{pe}$ is larger than the electron cyclotron frequency $Ω_e$. The fast-growing electrostatic beam-mode waves saturate in a few plasma oscillations by slowing down and relaxing the electron beam parallel to the background magnetic field. Upon their saturation, the finite amplitude ele…
Measurements of Ion velocity distributions are one of basic goals of space plasma studies. There is variety of ion and electron spectrometers (e.g. Wuest et al, 2007, Young et al., 2007, Zurbuchen and Gershman, 2016, Vaisberg et al, 2016). The most frequently used ion spectrometer is top-hat analyzer (Carlson et al., 1983) consisting of toroidal electrostatic analyzer, electrostatic scanner and time-of-flight section with thin foil as start element and ion pre-acceleration. We describe new energy-mass analyzer with electrostatic scanner providing hemispheric field-of view with small aberration…
Charged particles can be accelerated via surfatron mechanism along dc magnetic field by obliquely propagating electrostatic waves. In plasma, this mechanism can, in principle, produce an average parallel current, even when the wave frequency is much larger than the gyrofrequency and the wave phase velocity is much larger than particle initial velocities.
The problem of collisions in a plasma is a wide subject with a huge historical literature. In fact, the description of realistic plasmas is a tough problem to attach, both from the theoretical and the numerical point of view, and which requires in general to approximate the original collisional Landau integral by simplified differential operators in reduced dimensionality. In this paper, a Eulerian time-splitting algorithm for the study of the propagation of electrostatic waves in collisional plasmas is presented. Collisions are modeled through one-dimensional operators of the Fokker-Planck ty…
A method to generate ultrahigh intense electromagnetic fields is suggested, based on the laser pulse compression, carrier frequency upshift and focusing by a counter-propagating breaking plasma wave, relativistic flying parabolic mirror. This method allows us to achieve the quantum electrodynamics critical field (Schwinger limit) with present day laser systems.
The nonlinear longitudinal response of a strongly coupled dusty plasma system is analytically investigated using the Generalized Hydrodynamic (GHD) model. It is shown that the Galilean invariant form of the model does not have soliton solutions, but can support a variety of nonlinear singular (yet conservative) solutions like shock structures of zero strength and propagating solutions with cusp like singularities. These novel entities should be detectable in numerical simulations and experiments studying large amplitude longitudinal excitations in such systems.
With an implicit Particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo model, capacitively coupled plasmas are studied in two-dimensional and axisymmetric geometry. Self-bias dc voltage effects are self-consistently considered. Due to finite length effects, the self-bias dc voltages show sophisticating relations with the electrode areas. Two-dimensional kinetic effects are also illuminated. Compare to the fluid mode, PIC/MC model is numerical-diffusion-free and thus finer properties of the plasmas are simulated.
Laser-driven collisonless electrostatic shock formation and the subsequent ion acceleration have been studied in near critical density plasmas. Particle-in-cell simulations show that both the speed of laser-driven collisionless electrostatic shock and the energies of shock-accelerated ions can be greatly enhanced due to fast laser propagation in near critical density plasmas. However, a response time longer than tens of laser wave cycles is required before the shock formation in a near critical density plasma, in contrast to the quick shock formation in a highly overdense target. More importan…
The quantum hydrodynamic model of the electrostatic waves in the two parallel layers of two dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) is developed. It is considered for two regimes: classic regime and quantum regime with the separate spin evolution. Two Langmuir-like waves are found in classic case which have an interference-like pattern in the frequency dependence on concentration $ω^{2}\sim(n_{01}+n_{02}\pm2\sqrt{n_{01}n_{02}})$. They appear instead of two 2D Langmuir waves in noninteracting 2DEGs. The spectrum of four waves is found in the quantum regime. Two extra waves are related to the separat…
We study the evolution of electrostatic plasma waves, using the relativistic Vlasov equation extended by the Landau-Lifshitz radiation reaction, accounting for the back-reaction due to the emission of single particle Larmor radiation. In particular, the Langmuir wave damping is calculated as a function of wavenumber, initial temperature, and initial electric field amplitude. Moreover, the background distribution function loses energy in the process, and we calculate the cooling rate as a function of initial temperature and initial wave amplitude. Finally, we investigate how the relative magnit…
Electrostatic (E) fields associated with the interaction of a well-controlled, high-power, nanosecond laser pulse with an underdense plasma are diagnosed by proton radiography. Using a current 3D wave propagation code equipped with nonlinear and nonlocal hydrodynamics, we can model the measured E-fields that are driven by the laser ponderomotive force in the region where the laser undergoes filamentation. However, strong fields of up to 110 MV/m measured in the first millimeter of propagation cannot be reproduced in the simulations. This could point to the presence of unexpected strong thermal…
We investigate electrostatic plasma instabilities of Farley-Buneman (FB) type driven by quasi-stationary neutral gas flows in the solar chromosphere. The role of these instabilities in the chromosphere is clarified. We find that the destabilizing ion thermal effect is highly reduced by the Coulomb collisions and can be ignored for the chromospheric FB-type instabilities. On the contrary, the destabilizing electron thermal effect is important and causes a significant reduction of the neutral drag velocity triggering the instability. The resulting threshold velocity is found as function of chrom…
