It is pointed out that the unmagnetized inhomogeneous plasmas can support a low frequency electromagnetic ion wave as a normal mode like Alfven wave of magnetized plasmas. But this is a coupled mode produced by the mixing of longitudinal and transverse components of perturbed electric field due to density inhomogeneity. The ion acoustic wave does not remain electrostatic in non-uniform plasmas. On the other hand, a low frequency electrostatic wave can also exist in the pure electron plasmas. But the magnetic field fluctuations in both electron as well as in electron-ion plasmas are coupled with the electrostatic perturbations in unmagnetized case. The main instability condition for these low frequency electrostatic and electromagnetic modes is the same ${2/3}κ_n < κ_T$ (where $κ_n$ and $κ_T$ are inverse of the scale lengths of density and electron temperature, respectively).
Three kinds of electrostatic modes are experimentally observed to propagate along magnetic-field lines for the first time in the pair-ion plasma consisting of only positive and negative fullerene ions with an equal mass. It is found that phase lags between the density fluctuations of positive and negative ions vary from 0 to $π$ depending on the frequency and is fixed at $π$ in the cases of ion acoustic and ion plasma waves, respectively. In addition, a new mode with the phase lag about $π$ appears in an intermediate-frequency band between the acoustic and plasma waves.
Full orbit dynamics of charged particles in a $3$-dimensional helical magnetic field in the presence of $α$-stable Lévy electrostatic fluctuations and linear friction modeling collisional Coulomb drag is studied via Monte Carlo numerical simulations. The Lévy fluctuations are introduced to model the effect of non-local transport due to fractional diffusion in velocity space resulting from intermittent electrostatic turbulence. The probability distribution functions of energy, particle displacements, and Larmor radii are computed and showed to exhibit a transition from exponential decay, in the…
It is pointed out that electron thermal fluctuations can couple with the ion acoustic mode in an inhomogeneous plasma to generate a low frequency ion time scale electromagnetic wave. This electromagnetic wave can become unstable if the temperature and density gradients are parallel to each other which can be the case in laser-plasmas similar to stellar cores. The comparisons of the present theoretical model with the previous investigations are also presented. The final result is applied to a classical laser induced plasma for illustration.
Eulerian simulations of the Vlasov-Poisson equations have been employed to analyze the excitation of slow electrostatic fluctuations (with phase speed close to the electron thermal speed), due to a beam-plasma interaction, and their propagation in linear and nonlinear regime. In 1968, O'Neil and Malmberg [Phys. Fluids {\bf 11}, 1754 (1968)] dubbed these waves "beam modes". In the present paper, it is shown that, in the presence of a cold and low density electron beam, these beam modes can become unstable and then survive Landau damping unlike the Langmuir waves. When an electron beam is launch…
Using the Langevin approach and the multiscale technique, a kinetic theory of the time and space nonlocal fluctuations in the collisional plasma is constructed. In local equilibrium a generalized version of the Callen-Welton theorem is derived. It is shown that not only the dissipation but also the time and space derivatives of the dispersion determine the amplitude and the width of the spectrum lines of the electrostatic field fluctuations, as well as the form factor. There appear significant differences with respect to the non-uniform plasma. In the kinetic regime the form factor is more sen…
The current-driven electrostatic ion-cyclotron (EIC) instability is studied in presence of a transverse dc electric fields in a collisional magnetized dusty plasma. We derive the appropriate charging equation self consistently by using the Vlasov equation.
Relativistic positron beams are required for fundamental research in nonlinear strong field QED, plasma physics, and laboratory astrophysics. Positrons are difficult to create and manipulate due to their short lifetime, and their energy gain is limited by the accelerator size in conventional facilities. Alternative compact accelerator concepts in plasmas are becoming more and more mature for electrons, but positron generation and acceleration remain an outstanding challenge. Here we propose a new setup where we can generate, inject and accelerate them in a single stage during the propagation o…
A fluid system is derived to describe electrostatic magnetized plasma turbulence at scales somewhat larger than the Larmor radius of a given species. It is related to the Hasegawa- Mima equation, but does not conserve enstrophy, and, as a result, exhibits a forward cascade of energy, to small scales. The inertial-range energy spectrum is argued to be shallower than a -11/3 power law, as compared to the -5 law of the Hasegawa-Mima enstrophy cascade. This property, confirmed here by direct numerical simulations of the fluid system, may help explain the fluctuation spectrum observed in gyrokineti…
The high cadence plasma, electric, and magnetic field measurements by the Magnetospheric MultiScale spacecraft allow us to explore the near-Earth space plasma with an unprecedented time and spatial resolution, resolving electron-scale structures that naturally emerge from plasma complex dynamics. The formation of small-scale turbulent features is often associated to structured, non-Maxwellian particle velocity distribution functions that are not at thermodynamic equilibrium. Using measurements in the terrestrial magnetosheath, this study focuses on regions presenting bumps in the power spectra…
In this paper we consider the influence of dust charge fluctuations on damping of the dust-ion-acoustic waves. Fluid approximation of longitudinal electrostatic waves in unmagnetized plasmas is considered. We show that for a weak acoustic wave the attenuation depends on a phenomenological charging coefficient.
Kinetic simulations and theory demonstrate that whistler waves can excite oblique, short-wavelength fluctuations through secondary drift instabilities if a population of sufficiently cold plasma is present. The excited modes lead to heating of the cold populations and damping of the primary whistler waves. The instability threshold depends on the density and temperature of the cold population and can be relatively small if the temperature of the cold population is sufficiently low. This mechanism may thus play a significant role in controlling amplitude of whistlers in the regions of the Earth…
A geometrical correction to the E x B drift causes an outward flux of cocurrent momentum whenever electrostatic potential energy is transferred to ion parallel flows. The robust symmetry breaking follows from the free energy flow in phase space and does not depend on any assumed linear eigenmode structure, acting both for axisymmetric fluctuations (such as geodesic acoustic modes) as well as more general nonaxisymmetric fluctuations. The resulting rotation peaking is countercurrent and scales as electron temperature over plasma current. This peaking mechanism can only act when fluctuations are…
The electrostatic decay enables energy transfer from a finite amplitude Langmuir to a backscattered daughter Langmuir wave and ion acoustic density fluctuations. This mechanism is thought to be a first step for the generation of type III solar radio emissions at twice the plasma frequency. The electrostatic decay is here investigated through Vlasov-Poisson simulations by considering Langmuir localized wave packets in the case Te = Tp. Simulation results are found to be in good agreement with recently reported observations from the STEREO mission of the electrostatic decay of beam-driven Langmu…
An Eulerian, numerical simulation is used to model the launching of plasma waves in a non-neutral plasma that is confined in a Penning-Malmberg trap. The waves are launched by applying an oscillating potential to an electrically isolated sector at one end of the conducting cylinder that bounds the confinement region and are received by another electrically isolated sector at the other end of the cylinder. The launching of both Trivelpiece-Gould waves and electron acoustic waves is investigated. Adopting a stratagem, the simulation captures essential features of the finite length plasma, while …
Recent observation of large amplitude Langmuir waveforms during a Type III event in the solar wind have been interpreted as the signature of the electrostatic decay of beam-driven Langmuir waves. This mechanism is thought to be a first step to explain the generation of solar Type III radio emission. The threshold for this parametric instability in typical solar wind condition is investigated here by means of 1D-1V Vlasov-Poisson simulations. We show that the amplitude of the observed Langmuir beat-like waveforms is of the order of the effective threshold computed from the full kinetic simulati…
For more than 12 hours beginning on January 18, 2021, continuous narrowband electrostatic emissions were observed on Parker Solar Probe near 20 solar radii. The observed <1000 Hz frequencies were well below the local ion plasma frequency. Surprisingly, the emissions consisted of electrostatic wave packets with shock-like envelopes, appearing repetitively at a ~1.5 Hz rate. This repetitiveness correlated and was in phase with low frequency electromagnetic fluctuations. The emissions were associated with simultaneously observed ion beams and conditions favorable for ion-acoustic wave excitation,…
We investigate electrostatic plasma instabilities of Farley-Buneman (FB) type driven by quasi-stationary neutral gas flows in the solar chromosphere. The role of these instabilities in the chromosphere is clarified. We find that the destabilizing ion thermal effect is highly reduced by the Coulomb collisions and can be ignored for the chromospheric FB-type instabilities. On the contrary, the destabilizing electron thermal effect is important and causes a significant reduction of the neutral drag velocity triggering the instability. The resulting threshold velocity is found as function of chrom…
