When designing autonomous systems, we need to consider multiple trade-offs at various abstraction levels, and the choices of single (hardware and software) components need to be studied jointly. In this work we consider the problem of designing the control algorithm as well as the platform on which it is executed. In particular, we focus on vehicle control systems, and formalize state-of-the-art control schemes as monotone feasibility relations. We then show how, leveraging a monotone theory of co-design, we can study the embedding of control synthesis problems into the task-driven co-design problem of a robotic platform. The properties of the proposed approach are illustrated by considering urban driving scenarios. We show how, given a particular task, we can efficiently compute Pareto optimal design solutions.

The stochastic nature of public transport systems leads to headway variability and bus bunching, causing both operator and passenger cost to increase significantly. Traditional strategies to counter bus bunching, including bus-holding, stop-skipping, and bus substitution/insertion, suffer from trade-offs and shortcomings. Autonomous modular vehicle (AMV) technology provides an additional level of flexibility in bus dispatching and operations, which can offer significant benefits in mitigating bus bunching compared to strategies available with conventional buses. This paper introduces a novel a…

Autonomous electric vehicles are being widely studied nowadays as the future technology of ground transportation, while the autonomous electric vehicles based on conventional powertrain system limit their energy and power transmission efficiencies and may hinder their broad applications in future. Here we report a study on the energy consumption and efficiency improvement of a mid-size autonomous electric vehicle driven by in-wheel motors, through the development of a numerical energy model, validated with the actual driving data and implemented in a case study. The energy analysis was conduct…
Recent work in decentralized, schedule-driven traffic control has demonstrated the ability to improve the efficiency of traffic flow in complex urban road networks. In this approach, a scheduling agent is associated with each intersection. Each agent senses the traffic approaching its intersection and in real-time constructs a schedule that minimizes the cumulative wait time of vehicles approaching the intersection over the current look-ahead horizon. In this paper, we propose a cooperative algorithm that utilizes both connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV) and schedule-driven traffic control…
It is anticipated that the era of fully autonomous vehicle operations will be preceded by a lengthy "Transition Period" where the traffic stream will be mixed, that is, consisting of connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs), human-driven vehicles (HDVs) and connected human-driven vehicles (CHDVs). In recognition of the fact that public acceptance of CAVs will hinge on safety performance of automated driving systems, and that there will likely be safety challenges in the early part of the transition period, significant research efforts have been expended in the development of safety-conscious autom…

This algorithm innovatively combines the tournament-based point selection sampling strategy, the information heuristic search process and the framework of Rapidly-exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithm. Hence can guide the vehicle to the region of interest to scientists for sampling and generate a collision-free path for maximizing information collection by the HAUV under the constraints of environmenta…

Although robotics courses are well established in higher education, the courses often focus on theory and sometimes lack the systematic coverage of the techniques involved in developing, deploying, and applying software to real hardware. Additionally, most hardware platforms for robotics teaching are low-level toys aimed at younger students at middle-school levels. To address this gap, an autonomous vehicle hardware platform, called F1TENTH, is developed for teaching autonomous systems hands-on. This article describes the teaching modules and software stack for teaching at various educational …

Recent advances in communication technologies and automated vehicles have opened doors for alternative mobility systems (taxis, carpool, demand-responsive services, peer-to-peer ridesharing, and car sharing, shared autonomous vehicles/shuttles). These new mobility services have gathered interest from researchers, public and private sectors as potential solutions to address last-mile problem--especially in low density areas where implementation of high frequency buses is not feasible. In this study we investigate the effects of ride-sharing service on travel demand and welfare, as it complement…
Mobility on demand (MoD) systems show great promise in realizing flexible and efficient urban transportation. However, significant technical challenges arise from operational decision making associated with MoD vehicle dispatch and fleet rebalancing. For this reason, operators tend to employ simplified algorithms that have been demonstrated to work well in a particular setting. To help bridge the gap between novel and existing methods, we propose a modular framework for fleet rebalancing based on model-free reinforcement learning (RL) that can leverage an existing dispatch method to minimize s…
Leading autonomous vehicle (AV) platforms and testing infrastructures are, unfortunately, proprietary and closed-source. Thus, it is difficult to evaluate how well safety-critical AVs perform and how safe they truly are. Similarly, few platforms exist for much-needed multi-agent analysis. To provide a starting point for analysis of sensor fusion and collaborative & distributed sensing, we design an accessible, modular sensing platform with AVstack. We build collaborative and distributed camera-radar fusion algorithms and demonstrate an evaluation ecosystem of AV datasets, physics-based simulat…
Cooperative control of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) promises great benefits for mixed traffic. Most existing research focuses on model-based control strategies, assuming that car-following dynamics of human-driven vehicles are explicitly known. In this paper, instead of relying on a parametric car-following model, we introduce a data-driven predictive control strategy to achieve safe and optimal control for CAVs in mixed traffic. We first present a linearized dynamical model for mixed traffic systems, and investigate its controllability and observability. Based on these control-the…
This paper provides a comprehensive comparison of model-based and data-driven approaches and analyses the benefits of using measured tyre forces for vehicle sideslip angle estimation. The model-based approaches are based on an extended Kalman filter and an unscented Kalman filter, in which the measured tyre forces are utilised in the observation model. An adaptive covariance matrix is introduced to minimise the tyre model mismatch during evasive manoeuvres. For data-driven approaches, feed forward and recurrent neural networks are evaluated. Both approaches use the standard inertial measuremen…
This work addresses the problem of autonomous traffic management at an isolated intersection for connected and automated vehicles. We decompose the trajectory of each vehicle into two phases: the provisional phase and the coordinated phase. A vehicle, upon entering the region of interest, initially operates in the provisional phase, during which the vehicle optimizes its trajectory but is constrained from entering the intersection. Periodically, all the vehicles in their provisional phase switch to their coordinated phase, which is obtained by coordinated optimization of the sequence of the ve…
Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) and human-driven vehicles (HVs) are expected to coexist in the near future. CAV-dedicated lanes and phases have been explored to handle the uncertainty in the driving behavior of HVs in the mixed traffic environment. However, CAV-dedicated phases could significantly sacrifice HV benefits. This study proposes a shared-phase-dedicated-lane (SPDL)-based traffic control model at isolated intersections under the mixed traffic environment. Left-turn and through CAVs share CAV-dedicated lanes and cross the intersection during the shared phases with HVs. A three…
This paper presents a data-driven supervisory energy management strategy (EMS) for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles which leverages Vehicle-to-Cloud connectivity to increase energy efficiency by learning control policies from completed trips. The proposed EMS consists of two layers, a cloud layer and an on-board layer. The cloud layer has two main tasks: the first task is to learn EMS policy parameters from historical trip data, and the second task is to provide the policy parameters along a certain route requested from the vehicle. The on-board layer receives the learned policy parameters fro…

As safety-critical autonomous vehicles (AVs) will soon become pervasive in our society, a number of safety concepts for trusted AV deployment have recently been proposed throughout industry and academia. Yet, achieving consensus on an appropriate safety concept is still an elusive task. In this paper, we advocate for the use of Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) reachability as a unifying mathematical framework for comparing existing safety concepts, and through elements of this framework propose ways to tailor safety concepts (and thus expand their applicability) to scenarios with implicit expectations on …
Featuring the fast response and flexibility in control allocation, an electric vehicle with in-wheel motors is a good platform for implementing advanced vehicle dynamics control. Among many active safety functions of an in-wheel motor driven vehicle (IMDV), lateral stability control is a key technology, which can be realized through torque vectoring. To further advance the lateral stabilization performance of the IMDV, in this paper a novel data-driven nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) is proposed based the recurrent high-order neural network (RHONN) modelling method. First, the new RH…
One of the potential capabilities of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) is that they can have different route choice behavior and driving behavior compared to human Driven Vehicles (HDVs). This will lead to mixed traffic flow with multiple classes of route choice behavior. Therefore, it is crucial to solve the multiclass Traffic Assignment Problem (TAP) in mixed traffic of CAVs and HDVs. Few studies have tried to solve this problem; however, most used analytical solutions, which are challenging to implement in real and large networks (especially in dynamic cases). Also, studies in implem…
This dissertation proposes two solutions for urban traffic control in the presence of connected and automated vehicles. First a centralized platoon-based controller is proposed for the cooperative intersection management problem that takes advantage of the platooning systems and V2I communication to generate fast and smooth traffic flow at a single intersection. Second, a data-driven approach is proposed for adaptive signal control in the presence of connected vehicles. The proposed system relies on a data-driven method for optimal signal timing and a data-driven heuristic method for estimatin…

The erratic nature of human driving tends to trigger undesired waves that amplify as successive driver reactions propagate from the errant vehicle to vehicles upstream. Known as phantom jams, this phenomenon has been identified in the literature as one of the main causes of traffic congestion. This paper is based on the premise that vehicle automation and connectivity can help mitigate such jams. In the paper, we design a controller for use in a connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) to stabilize the flow of human-driven vehicles (HDVs) that are upstream of the CAV, and consequently to lower c…

Within the field of prognostics and health management (PHM), health indicators (HI) can be used to aid the production and, e.g. schedule maintenance and avoid failures. However, HI is often engineered to a specific process and typically requires large amounts of historical data for set-up. This is especially a challenge for SMEs, which often lack sufficient resources and knowledge to benefit from PHM. In this paper, we propose ModularHI, a modular approach in the construction of HI for a system without historical data. With ModularHI, the operator chooses which sensor inputs are available, and…
