In this paper, we introduce the concept of the weighted (harmonic) chromatic polynomials of graphs and discuss some of its properties. We also present the notion of the weighted (harmonic) Tutte--Grothendieck polynomials of graphs and give a generalization of the recipe theorem between the harmonic Tutte--Grothendieck polynomials graphs and the harmonic Tutte polynomials of matroids. Moreover, we give some constructions of the weighted (harmonic) Tutte--Grothendieck invariants for graphs and the weighted (harmonic) Tutte invariants for matroids. Finally, we give a remark on the categorification of the harmonic chromatic polynomials of graphs and harmonic Tutte polynomials of matroids.
We transform Tutte-Grothedieck invariants thus also Tutte polynomials on matroids so that the contraction-deletion rule for loops (isthmuses) coincides with the general case.
This paper is based on a series of talks given at the Patejdlovka Enumeration Workshop held in the Czech Republic in November 2007. The topics covered are as follows. The graph polynomial, Tutte-Grothendieck invariants, an overview of relevant elementary finite Fourier analysis, the Tutte polynomial of a graph as a Hamming weight enumerator of its set of tensions (or flows), and a description of a family of polynomials containing the graph polynomial which yield Tutte-Grothendieck invariants in a similar way.
We study some combinatorial and algebraic properties of certain quadratic algebras related with dynamical classical and classical Yang-Baxter equations. One can find more details about the content of present paper in Extended Abstract.
We define and study "semimatroids", a class of objects which abstracts the dependence properties of an affine hyperplane arrangement. We show that geometric semilattices are precisely the posets of flats of semimatroids. We define and investigate the Tutte polynomial of a semimatroid. We prove that it is the universal Tutte-Grothendieck invariant for semimatroids, and we give a combinatorial interpretation for its non-negative coefficients.
This paper has two main parts. First, we consider the Tutte symmetric function $XB$, a generalization of the chromatic symmetric function. We introduce a vertex-weighted version of $XB$ and show that this function admits a deletion-contraction relation. We also demonstrate that the vertex-weighted $XB$ admits spanning-tree and spanning-forest expansions generalizing those of the Tutte polynomial by connecting $XB$ to other graph functions. Second, we give several methods for constructing nonisomorphic graphs with equal chromatic and Tutte symmetric functions, and use them to provide specific e…
A gain graph is a graph whose edges are orientably labelled from a group. A weighted gain graph is a gain graph with vertex weights from an abelian semigroup, where the gain group is lattice ordered and acts on the weight semigroup. For weighted gain graphs we establish basic properties and we present general dichromatic and forest-expansion polynomials that are Tutte invariants (they satisfy Tutte's deletion-contraction and multiplicative identities). Our dichromatic polynomial includes the classical graph one by Tutte, Zaslavsky's two for gain graphs, Noble and Welsh's for graphs with positi…
We introduce the notion of a matroid M over a commutative ring R, assigning to every subset of the ground set an R-module according to some axioms. When R is a field, we recover matroids. When R=$\mathbb{Z}$, and when R is a DVR, we get (structures which contain all the data of) quasi-arithmetic matroids, and valuated matroids i.e. tropical linear spaces, respectively. More generally, whenever R is a Dedekind domain, we extend all the usual properties and operations holding for matroids (e.g., duality), and we explicitly describe the structure of the matroids over R. Furthermore, we compute th…
In this work, we study matroids over a domain and several classical combinatorial and algebraic invariants related. We define their Grothendieck-Tutte polynomial $T_{\mathcal{M}}(x,y)$, extending the definition given by Fink and Moci in 2016, and we show that such polynomial has the classical deletion-contraction property. Moreover, we study the set of independencies for a realizable matroid over a domain, generalizing the definition of \emph{poset of torsions} $Gr(\mathcal{M})$ given by the second author in 2017. This is a union of identical simplicial posets as for (quasi-)arithmetic matroid…
Lopéz de Medrano-Rinćon-Shaw defined Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson cycles for an arbitrary matroid $M$ and proved by an inductive geometric argument that the unsigned degrees of these cycles agree with the coefficients of $T(M;x,0)$, where $T(M;x,y)$ is the Tutte polynomial associated to $M$. Ardila-Denham-Huh recently utilized this interpretation of these coefficients in order to demonstrate their log-concavity. In this note we provide a direct calculation of the degree of a matroid Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson cycle by taking its stable intersection with a generic tropical linear space of the appro…
Recently V. Krushkal and D. Renardy generalized the Tutte polynomial from graphs to cell complexes. We show that evaluating this polynomial at the origin gives the number of cellular spanning trees in the sense of A. Duval, C. Klivans, and J. Martin. Moreover, after a slight modification, the Tutte-Krushkal-Renardy polynomial evaluated at the origin gives a weighted count of cellular spanning trees, and therefore its free term can be calculated by the cellular matrix-tree theorem of Duval et al. In the case of cell decompositions of a sphere, this modified polynomial satisfies the same duality…
A common generalization for the chromatic polynomial and the flow polynomial of a graph $G$ is the Tutte polynomial $T(G;x,y)$. The combinatorial meaning for the coefficients of $T$ was discovered by Tutte at the beginning of its definition. However, for a long time the combinatorial meaning for the values of $T$ is missing, except for a few values such as $T(G;i,j)$, where $1\leq i,j\leq 2$, until recently for $T(G;1,0)$ and $T(G;0,1)$. In this third one of a series of papers, we introduce product valuations, cartesian product arrangements, and multivariable characteristic polynomials, and ap…
This thesis deals with the Tutte polynomial, studied from different points of view. In the first part, we address the enumeration of planar maps equipped with a spanning forest, here called forested maps, with a weight $z$ per face and a weight $u$ per non-root component of the forest. Equivalently, we count (with respect to the number of faces) the planar maps $C$ weighted by $T_C(u+1,1)$, where $T_C$ is the Tutte polynomial of $C$. We begin by a purely combinatorial characterization of the corresponding generating function, denoted by $F(z,u)$. We deduce from this that $F(z,u)$ is differenti…
We define a graph Laplacian with vertex weights in addition to the more classical edge weights, which unifies the combinatorial Laplacian and the normalised Laplacian. Moreover, we give a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the weighted Laplacian characteristic polynomial in terms of weighted spanning forests and use this to prove a deletion-contraction relation. We prove various interlacing theorems relating to deletion and contraction, as well as to rectangular tilings, drawing on the work of Brooks, Smith, Stone and Tutte on square tilings. Additionally, we show that the we…
This paper presents an algorithm to construct a weighted adjacency matrix of a plane bipartite graph obtained from a pretzel knot diagram. The determinant of this matrix after evaluation is shown to be the Jones polynomial of the pretzel knot by way of perfect matchings (or dimers) of this graph. The weights are Tutte's activity letters that arise because the Jones polynomial is a specialization of the signed version of the Tutte polynomial. The relationship is formalized between the familiar spanning tree setting for the Tait graph and the perfect matchings of the plane bipartite graph above.…
The interlace polynomials introduced by Arratia, Bollobas and Sorkin extend to invariants of graphs with vertex weights, and these weighted interlace polynomials have several novel properties. One novel property is a version of the fundamental three-term formula q(G)=q(G-a)+q(G^{ab}-b)+((x-1)^{2}-1)q(G^{ab}-a-b) that lacks the last term. It follows that interlace polynomial computations can be represented by binary trees rather than mixed binary-ternary trees. Binary computation trees provide a description of $q(G)$ that is analogous to the activities description of the Tutte polynomial. If $G…
There is a remarkable formula for the principal specialization of a type A Schubert polynomial as a weighted sum over reduced words. Taking appropriate limits transforms this to an identity for the backstable Schubert polynomials recently introduced by Lam, Lee, and Shimozono. This note identifies some analogues of the latter formula for principal specializations of Schubert polynomials in classical types B, C, and D. We also describe some more general identities for Grothendieck polynomials. As a related application, we derive a simple proof of a pipe dream formula for involution Grothendieck…
A k-valuation is a special type of edge k-colouring of a medial graph. Various graph polynomials, such as the Tutte, Penrose, Bollobás-Riordan, and transition polynomials, admit combinatorial interpretations and evaluations as weighted counts of k-valuations. In this paper, we consider a multivariate generating function of k-valuations. We show that this is a polynomial in k and hence defines a graph polynomial. We then show that the resulting polynomial has several desirable properties, including a recursive deletion-contraction-type definition, and specialises to the graph polynomials mentio…
In this note we study some of the properties of the generating polynomial for homomorphisms from a graph to at complete weighted graph on $q$ vertices. We discuss how this polynomial relates to a long list of other well known graph polynomials and the partition functions for different spin models, many of which are specialisations of the homomorphism polynomial. We also identify the smallest graphs which are not determined by their homomorphism polynomials for $q=2$ and $q=3$ and compare this with the corresponding minimal examples for the $U$-polynomial, which generalizes the well known Tutte…
The number of homomorphisms from a finite graph $F$ to the complete graph $K_n$ is the evaluation of the chromatic polynomial of $F$ at $n$. Suitably scaled, this is the Tutte polynomial evaluation $T(F;1-n,0)$ and an invariant of the cycle matroid of $F$. De la Harpe and Jaeger \cite{dlHJ95} asked more generally when is it the case that a graph parameter obtained from counting homomorphisms from $F$ to a fixed graph $G$ depends only on the cycle matroid of $F$. They showed that this is true when $G$ has a generously transitive automorphism group (examples include Cayley graphs on an abelian g…
