This paper is based on a series of talks given at the Patejdlovka Enumeration Workshop held in the Czech Republic in November 2007. The topics covered are as follows. The graph polynomial, Tutte-Grothendieck invariants, an overview of relevant elementary finite Fourier analysis, the Tutte polynomial of a graph as a Hamming weight enumerator of its set of tensions (or flows), and a description of a family of polynomials containing the graph polynomial which yield Tutte-Grothendieck invariants in a similar way.
We transform Tutte-Grothedieck invariants thus also Tutte polynomials on matroids so that the contraction-deletion rule for loops (isthmuses) coincides with the general case.
We study some combinatorial and algebraic properties of certain quadratic algebras related with dynamical classical and classical Yang-Baxter equations. One can find more details about the content of present paper in Extended Abstract.
We define and study "semimatroids", a class of objects which abstracts the dependence properties of an affine hyperplane arrangement. We show that geometric semilattices are precisely the posets of flats of semimatroids. We define and investigate the Tutte polynomial of a semimatroid. We prove that it is the universal Tutte-Grothendieck invariant for semimatroids, and we give a combinatorial interpretation for its non-negative coefficients.
T. Kálmán (A version of Tutte's polynomial for hypergraphs, Adv. Math. 244 (2013) 823-873.) introduced the interior and exterior polynomials which are generalizations of the Tutte polynomial $T(x,y)$ on plane points $(1/x,1)$ and $(1,1/y)$ to hypergraphs. The two polynomials are defined under a fixed ordering of hyperedges, and are proved to be independent of the ordering using techniques of polytopes. In this paper, similar to the Tutte's original proof we provide a direct and elementary proof for the well-definedness of the interior and exterior polynomials of hypergraphs.
We take an elementary and systematic approach to the problem of extending the Tutte polynomial to the setting of embedded graphs. Four notions of embedded graphs arise naturally when considering deletion and contraction operations on graphs on surfaces. We give a description of each class in terms of coloured ribbon graphs. We then identify a universal deletion-contraction invariant (i.e., a `Tutte polynomial') for each class. We relate these to graph polynomials in the literature, including the Bollobás--Riordan, Krushkal, and Las Vergnas polynomials, and give state-sum formulations, duality …
Identities obtained by elementary finite Fourier analysis are used to derive a variety of evaluations of the Tutte polynomial of a graph G at certain points (a,b) where (a-1)(b-1) equals 2 or 4. These evaluations are expressed in terms of eulerian subgraphs of G and the size of subgraphs modulo 2,3,4 or 6. In particular, a graph is found to have a nowhere-zero 4-flow if and only if there is a correlation between the event that three subgraphs A,B,C chosen uniformly at random have pairwise eulerian symmetric differences and the event that the integer part of (|A| + |B| + |C|) / 3 is even. Some …
The Tutte polynomial of a connected graph was originally defined by Tutte as a sum over all spanning trees of monomials depending on a fixed linear order on the set of edges. Tuttle proved that while these monomials do depend on the linear order, the sum does not. The present paper is a result of a reflection upon this classical theorem of Tutte. It is devoted to an elementary and detailed proof of this theorem in its natural generality, i.e. not for graphs, but for matroids. In contrast with usual methods, the emphasis is on the properties of maps (as opposed to elements) naturally associated…
Buch and Rimányi proved a formula for specializations of double Grothendieck polynomials based on the Yang-Baxter equation related to the degenerate Hecke algebra. A geometric proof was found by Yong and Woo by constructing a Gröbner basis for the Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals. In this note, we give an elementary proof for this formula by using only divided difference operators.
In this work, we study matroids over a domain and several classical combinatorial and algebraic invariants related. We define their Grothendieck-Tutte polynomial $T_{\mathcal{M}}(x,y)$, extending the definition given by Fink and Moci in 2016, and we show that such polynomial has the classical deletion-contraction property. Moreover, we study the set of independencies for a realizable matroid over a domain, generalizing the definition of \emph{poset of torsions} $Gr(\mathcal{M})$ given by the second author in 2017. This is a union of identical simplicial posets as for (quasi-)arithmetic matroid…
A {\it tiered graph} $G=(V,E)$ with $m $ tiers is a simple graph with $V\subseteq \brk{n}$, where $\brk{n}=\{1,2,\cdots,n\}$, and with a surjective map $t$ from $V$ to $\brk{m}$ such that if $v$ is a vertex adjacent to $v'$ in $G$ with $v>v'$, then $t(v) >t(v')$. For any ordered partition $p=(p_1,p_2,\cdots,p_m)$ of $n$, let $\sett_p$ denote the set of tiered trees with vertex set $\brk{n}$ and with a map $t: \brk{n}\rightarrow \brk{m}$ such that $|t^{-1}(i)|=p_i$ for all $i=1,2,\ldots,m$. For any $T\in \sett_p$, let $K_T$ denote the complete tiered graph whose vertex set and tiering map are t…
Let the matching polynomial of a graph $G$ be denoted by $μ(G,x)$. A graph $G$ is said to be $θ$-super positive if $μ(G,θ)\neq 0$ and $μ(G\setminus v,θ)=0$ for all $v\in V(G)$. In particular, $G$ is 0-super positive if and only if $G$ has a perfect matching. While much is known about 0-super positive graphs, almost nothing is known about $θ$-super positive graphs for $θ\not = 0$. This motivates us to investigate the structure of $θ$-super positive graphs in this paper. Though a 0-super positive graph may not contain any cycle, we show that a $θ$-super positive graph with $θ\not = 0$ must conta…
In 1977, Yu. V. Matiyasevich proposed a formula expressing the chromatic polynomial of an arbitrary graph as a linear combination of flow polynomials of subgraphs of the original graph. In this paper, we prove that this representation is a particular case of one (easily verifiable) formula, namely, the representation of the characteristic polynomial of an arbitrary matroid as a linear combination of characteristic polynomials of dual matroids. As an application, we represent the flow polynomial of a complete graph with $n$ vertices as the sum of elementary terms with respect to all partitions …
In this paper we introduce, and characterize, a class of graph parameters obtained from tensor invariants of the symplectic group. These parameters are similar to partition functions of vertex models, as introduced by de la Harpe and Jones, [P. de la Harpe, V.F.R. Jones, Graph invariants related to statistical mechanical models: examples and problems, Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B 57 (1993) 207-227]. Yet they give a completely different class of graph invariants. We moreover show that certain evaluations of the cycle partition polynomial, as defined by Martin [P. Martin, Enumératio…
We study the representation theory of three towers of algebras which are related to the symmetric groups and their Hecke algebras. The first one is constructed as the algebras generated simultaneously by the elementary transpositions and the elementary sorting operators acting on permutations. The two others are the monoid algebras of nondecreasing functions and nondecreasing parking functions. For these three towers, we describe the structure of simple and indecomposable projective modules, together with the Cartan map. The Grothendieck algebras and coalgebras given respectively by the induct…
In a recent paper Jones introduced a correspondence between elements of the Thompson group $F$ and certain graphs/links. It follows from his work that several polynomial invariants of links, such as the Kauffman bracket, can be reinterpreted as coefficients of certain unitary representations of $F$. We give a somewhat different and elementary proof of this fact for the Kauffman bracket evaluated at certain roots of unity by means of a statistical mechanics model interpretation. Moreover, by similar methods we show that, for some particular specializations of the variables, other familiar link …
