For a period of three weeks in June 2021, we embedded a social robot (Softbank Pepper) in a Special Educational Needs (SEN) school, with a focus on supporting the well-being of autistic children. Our methodology to design and embed the robot among this vulnerable population follows a comprehensive participatory approach. We used the research project as a test-bed to demonstrate in a complex real-world environment the importance and suitability of the nine UNICEF guidelines on AI for Children. The UNICEF guidelines on AI for Children closely align with several of the UN goals for sustainable de…
This paper introduces the project Social Assistive Robotics for Autistic Children aimed at using robotic therapy for autism. The goal of the project is testing autistic children's interactions with the social robot NAO. In particular the robot will support the operators (psychologists, educators, speech therapists etc.) in their work. The innovative aspect of the project is that the children robot interaction will consider the children's emotions and specific features and the robot will adapt its behavior accordingly.

Robot-assisted therapy is an emerging form of therapy for autistic children, although designing effective robot behaviors is a challenge for effective implementation of such therapy. A series of usability tests assessed trends in the effectiveness of modelling a robot's facial expressions on realistic facial expressions and of adding peripherals enabling child-led control of emotion learning activities with autistic children. Nineteen autistic children interacted with a small humanoid robot and an adult therapist in several emotion-learning activities that featured realistic facial expressions…

Application of humanoid robots has been common in the field of healthcare and education. It has been recurrently used to improve social behavior and mollify distress level among children with autism, cancer and cerebral palsy. This article discusses the same from a human factors perspective. It shows how people of different age and gender have a different opinion towards the application and acceptance of humanoid robots. Additionally, this article highlights the influence of cerebral condition and social interaction on a user behavior and attitude towards humanoid robots. Our study performed a…

A key challenge in developing engaging social robots is creating convincing, autonomous and responsive agents, which users perceive, and treat, as social beings. As a part of the collaborative project: Expressive Agents for Symbiotic Education and Learning (EASEL), this study examines the impact of autonomous response to children's speech, by the humanoid robot Zeno, on their interactions with it as a social entity. Results indicate that robot autonomy and adult assistance during HRI can substantially influence children's behaviour during interaction and their affect after. Children working wi…

This study presents novel strategies to investigate the mutual influence of trust and group dynamics in children-robot interaction. We implemented a game-like experimental activity with the humanoid robot iCub and designed a questionnaire to assess how the children perceived the interaction. We also aim to verify if the sensors, setups, and tasks are suitable for studying such aspects. The questionnaires' results demonstrate that youths perceive iCub as a friend and, typically, in a positive way. Other preliminary results suggest that, generally, children trusted iCub during the activity and, …
In this paper we introduce the core results of the project on software development for social robotics systems. The usability of maintenance and control features is crucial for many kinds of systems, but in the case of social robotics we also have to take into account that (1) the humanoid robot physically interacts with humans, (2) the conversation with children might have different requirements in comparison to the conversation with adults. The results of our work were implement for the humanoid PAL REEM robot, but their core ideas can be applied for other types of humanoid robots. We develo…
