This is the first part of a two-part paper and has 30 pages and 6 figures. The second part is titled "Bit-Metric Decoding Rate in Multi-User MIMO Systems: Applications". This part has been significantly revised. In particular, we relate BMDR to the mismatched decoding framework that exists in the literature, and have rewritten the claims and proof of the main theorem
Link-adaptation (LA) is one of the most important aspects of wireless communications where the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) used by the transmitter is adapted to the channel conditions in order to meet a certain target error-rate. In a single-user SISO (SU-SISO) system with out-of-cell interference, LA is performed by computing the post-equalization signal-to-interference-noise ratio (SINR) at the receiver. The same technique can be employed in multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) receivers that use linear detectors. Another important use of post-equalization SINR is for physical layer (PHY) abstraction, where several PHY blocks like the channel encoder, the detector, and the channel decoder are replaced by an abstraction model in order to speed up system-level simulations. However, for MU-MIMO systems with non-linear receivers, there is no known equivalent of post-equalization SINR which makes both LA and PHY abstraction extremely challenging. This important issue is addressed in this two-part paper. In this part, a metric called the bit-metric decoding rate (BMDR) of a detector, which is the proposed equivalent of post-equalization SINR, is presented. Since BMDR does not have a closed form expression that would enable its instantaneous calculation, a machine-learning approach to predict it is presented along with extensive simulation results.
We propose a deep-learning approach for the joint MIMO detection and channel decoding problem. Conventional MIMO receivers adopt a model-based approach for MIMO detection and channel decoding in linear or iterative manners. However, due to the complex MIMO signal model, the optimal solution to the joint MIMO detection and channel decoding problem (i.e., the maximum likelihood decoding of the transmitted codewords from the received MIMO signals) is computationally infeasible. As a practical measure, the current model-based MIMO receivers all use suboptimal MIMO decoding methods with affordable …
Diversity order is an important measure for the performance of communication systems over MIMO fading channels. In this paper, we prove that in MIMO multiple access systems (or MIMO point-to-point systems with V-BLAST transmission), lattice-reduction-aided decoding achieves the maximum receive diversity (which is equal to the number of receive antennas). Also, we prove that the naive lattice decoding (which discards the out-of-region decoded points) achieves the maximum diversity.
In this paper we present a novel method for decoding multiple input - multiple output (MIMO) transmission, which combines sphere decoding (SD) and zero forcing (ZF) techniques to provide near optimal low complexity and high performance constant time modified sphere decoding algorithm. This algorithm was designed especially for large number of transmit antennas, and allows efficient implementation in hardware. We do this by limiting the number of overall SD iterations. Moreover, we make sure that matrices with high condition number are more likely to undergo SD.
We propose a novel optimization-based decoding algorithm for LDPC-coded massive MIMO channels. The proposed decoding algorithm is based on a proximal gradient method for solving an approximate maximum a posteriori (MAP) decoding problem. The key idea is the use of a code-constraint polynomial penalizing a vector far from a codeword as a regularizer in the approximate MAP objective function. The code proximal operator is naturally derived from code-constraint polynomials. The proposed algorithm, called proximal decoding, can be described by a simple recursion consisting of the gradient descent …
The 3D MIMO code is a robust and efficient space-time coding scheme for the distributed MIMO broadcasting. However, it suffers from the high computational complexity if the optimal maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding is used. In this paper we first investigate the unique properties of the 3D MIMO code and consequently propose a simplified decoding algorithm without sacrificing the ML optimality. Analysis shows that the decoding complexity is reduced from O(M^8) to O(M^{4.5}) in quasi-static channels when M-ary square QAM constellation is used. Moreover, we propose an efficient implementation of t…
This is the second part of a two-part paper that focuses on link-adaptation (LA) and physical layer (PHY) abstraction for multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) systems with non-linear receivers. The first part proposes a new metric, called bit-metric decoding rate (BMDR) for a detector, as being the equivalent of post-equalization signal-to-interference-noise ratio (SINR) for non-linear receivers. Since this BMDR does not have a closed form expression, a machine-learning based approach to estimate it effectively is presented. In this part, the concepts developed in the first part are utilized to develop n…
In Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) systems, Maximum-Likelihood (ML) decoding is equivalent to finding the closest lattice point in an N-dimensional complex space. In general, this problem is known to be NP hard. In this paper, we propose a quasi-maximum likelihood algorithm based on Semi-Definite Programming (SDP). We introduce several SDP relaxation models for MIMO systems, with increasing complexity. We use interior-point methods for solving the models and obtain a near-ML performance with polynomial computational complexity. Lattice basis reduction is applied to further reduce the computati…
We consider unsourced random access with MIMO receiver - a crucial communication scenario for future 5G/6G wireless networks. We perform a projection-based decoder analysis and derive energy efficiency achievability bounds when channel state information is unknown at transmitters and the receiver (no-CSI scenario). The comparison to the maximum-likelihood (ML) achievability bounds by Gao et al. (2023) is performed. We show that there is a region where the new bound outperforms the ML bound. The latter fact should not surprise the reader as both decoding criteria are suboptimal when considering…
This paper proposes a low decoding complexity, full-diversity and full-rate space-time block code (STBC) for 4 transmit and 2 receive ($4\times 2$) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. For such systems, the best code known is the DjABBA code and recently, Biglieri, Hong and Viterbo have proposed another STBC (BHV code) which has lower decoding complexity than DjABBA but does not have full-diversity like the DjABBA code. The code proposed in this paper has the same decoding complexity as the BHV code for square QAM constellations but has full-diversity as well. Compared to the best co…
Massive multiple-input--multiple-output (MIMO) systems can suffer from coherent intercell interference due to the phenomenon of pilot contamination. This paper investigates a two-layer decoding method that mitigates both coherent and non-coherent interference in multi-cell Massive MIMO. To this end, each base station (BS) first estimates the channels to intra-cell users using either minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) or element-wise MMSE (EW-MMSE) estimation based on uplink pilots. The estimates are used for local decoding on each BS followed by a second decoding layer where the BSs cooperate t…
The exact average complexity analysis of the basic sphere decoder for general space-time codes applied to multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless channel is known to be difficult. In this work, we shed the light on the computational complexity of sphere decoding for the quasi-static, LAttice Space-Time (LAST) coded MIMO channel. Specifically, we drive an upper bound of the tail distribution of the decoder's computational complexity. We show that, when the computational complexity exceeds a certain limit, this upper bound becomes dominated by the outage probability achieved by LAST codin…
This paper studies a two-layer decoding method that mitigates inter-cell interference in multi-cell Massive MIMO systems. In layer one, each base station (BS) estimates the channels to intra-cell users and uses the estimates for local decoding on each BS, followed by a second decoding layer where the BSs cooperate to mitigate inter-cell interference. An uplink achievable spectral efficiency (SE) expression is computed for arbitrary two-layer decoding schemes, while a closed-form expression is obtained for correlated Rayleigh fading channels, maximum-ratio combining (MRC), and large-scale fadin…
The optimal diversity-multiplexing-delay tradeoff for the multi-input multi-output (MIMO) automatic repeat request (ARQ) channel can be achieved using incremental redundancy lattice space-time codes coupled with a list decoder for joint error detection and correction. Such a decoder is based on the minimum mean-square error lattice decoding principle which is implemented using sphere decoding algorithms. However, sphere decoders suffer from high computational complexity for low-to-moderate signal-to-noise ratios, especially for large signal dimensions. In this paper, we would like to construct…
In this paper, we consider the problem of iterative detection and decoding (IDD) for multi-antenna systems using low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. The proposed IDD system consists of a soft-input soft-output parallel interference (PIC) cancellation scheme with linear minimum mean-square error (MMSE) receive filters and two novel belief propagation (BP) decoding algorithms. The proposed BP algorithms exploit the knowledge of short cycles in the graph structure and the reweighting factors derived from the hypergraph's expansion. Simulation results show that when used to perform IDD for mult…
In this work, we consider the problem of reduced latency of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with iterative detection and decoding (IDD) receiver in multiuser multiple-antenna systems. The proposed knowledge-aided IDD (KA-IDD) system employs a minimum mean-square error detector with refined iterative processing and a reweighted belief propagation (BP) decoding algorithm. We present reweighted BP decoding algorithms, which exploit the knowledge of short cycles in the graph structure and reweighting factors derived from the expansion of hypergraphs. Simulation results show that the proposed…
We propose a scalable video broadcasting scheme over MIMO-OFDM systems. The scalable video source layers are channel encoded and modulated into independent signal streams, which are then transmitted from the allocated antennas in certain time-frequency blocks. Each receiver employs the successive group decoder to decode the signal streams of interest by treating other signal streams as interference. The transmitter performs adaptive coding and modulation, and transmission antenna and subcarrier allocation, based on the rate feedback from the receivers. We also propose a hybrid receiver that sw…
Lattice reduction algorithms, such as the LLL algorithm, have been proposed as preprocessing tools in order to enhance the performance of suboptimal receivers in MIMO communications. In this paper we introduce a new kind of lattice reduction-aided decoding technique, called augmented lattice reduction, which recovers the transmitted vector directly from the change of basis matrix, and therefore doesn't entail the computation of the pseudo-inverse of the channel matrix or its QR decomposition. We prove that augmented lattice reduction attains the maximum receive diversity order of the channel; …
This paper considers an uplink multiuser multiple-input-multiple-output (MU-MIMO) system with one-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), in which $K$ users with a single transmit antenna communicate with one base station (BS) with $N_{\rm r}$ receive antennas. In this system, a novel MU-MIMO detection method, named weighted minimum distance (wMD) decoding, was recently proposed by introducing an equivalent coding problem. Despite of its attractive performance, the wMD decoding has the two limitations to be used in practice: i) the hard-decision outputs can degrade the performance of a channe…
In the setting of quasi-static multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels, we consider the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) asymptotic complexity required by the sphere decoding (SD) algorithm for decoding a large class of full rate linear space-time codes. With SD complexity having random fluctuations induced by the random channel, noise and codeword realizations, the introduced SD complexity exponent manages to concisely describe the computational reserves required by the SD algorithm to achieve arbitrarily close to optimal decoding performance. Bounds and exact expressions for the SD co…
In this paper, we solve the sum mean-squared error (MSE)-optimal 1-bit quantized precoding problem exactly for small-to-moderate sized multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems via branch and bound. To this end, we reformulate the original NP-hard precoding problem as a tree search and deploy a number of strategies that improve the pruning efficiency without sacrificing optimality. We evaluate the error-rate performance and the complexity of the resulting 1-bit branch-and-bound (BB-1) precoder, and compare its efficacy to that of existing, suboptimal algorithms for 1-bit preco…
Hardware impairments in radio-frequency components of a wireless system cause unavoidable distortions to transmission that are not captured by the conventional linear channel model. In this paper, a 'binoisy' single-user multiple-input multiple-output (SU-MIMO) relation is considered where the additional distortions are modeled via an additive noise term at the transmit side. Through this extended SU-MIMO channel model, the effects of transceiver hardware impairments on the achievable rate of multi-antenna point-to-point systems are studied. Channel input distributions encompassing practical d…
This paper considers the uplink of user-centric cell-free massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) systems. We utilize the user-centric dynamic cooperation clustering (DCC) framework and derive the achievable spectral efficiency with two-layer decoding that is divided between the access points and the central processing unit (CPU). This decoding method is also known as large-scale fading decoding (LSFD). The fronthaul signaling load is analyzed and a nearly optimal second-layer decoding scheme at the CPU is proposed to reduce the fronthaul requirements compared to the optimal scheme. We a…
We propose iterative detection and decoding (IDD) algorithms with Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes for Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems operating in block-fading and fast Rayleigh fading channels. Soft-input soft-output minimum mean-square error receivers with successive interference cancellation are considered. In particular, we devise a novel strategy to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of IDD schemes, which takes into account the soft \textit{a posteriori} output of the decoder in a block-fading channel when Root-Check LDPC codes are used. A MIMO IDD receiver w…
A novel distributed space-time block code (STBC) for the next generation mobile TV broadcasting is proposed. The new code provides efficient performance within a wide range of power imbalance showing strong adaptivity to the single frequency network (SFN) broadcasting deployments. The new code outperforms existing STBCs with equivalent decoding complexity and approaches those with much higher complexities.
Information transmission over a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) fading channel with imperfect channel state information (CSI) is investigated, under a new receiver architecture which combines the recently proposed generalized nearest neighbor decoding rule (GNNDR) and a successive procedure in the spirit of successive interference cancellation (SIC). Recognizing that the channel input-output relationship is a nonlinear mapping under imperfect CSI, the GNNDR is capable of extracting the information embedded in the joint observation of channel output and imperfect CSI more efficiently than…
Orthogonality is a much desired property for MIMO coding. It enables symbol-wise decoding, where the errors in other symbol estimates do not affect the result, thus providing an optimality that is worth pursuing. Another beneficial property is a low complexity soft decision decoder, which for orthogonal complex MIMO codes is known for two transmit (Tx) antennas i.e. for the Alamouti code. We propose novel soft decision decoders for the orthogonal complex MIMO codes on three and four Tx antennas and extend the old result of maximal ratio combining (MRC) to cover all orthogonal codes up to four …
Iterative detection and decoding (IDD) is known to achieve near-capacity performance in multi-antenna wireless systems. We propose deep-unfolded interleaved detection and decoding (DUIDD), a new paradigm that reduces the complexity of IDD while achieving even lower error rates. DUIDD interleaves the inner stages of the data detector and channel decoder, which expedites convergence and reduces complexity. Furthermore, DUIDD applies deep unfolding to automatically optimize algorithmic hyperparameters, soft-information exchange, message damping, and state forwarding. We demonstrate the efficacy o…
In this paper, we consider the precoder design for downlink multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) systems. The proposed scheme with simultaneous diagonalization (SD) decomposes the MIMO channel matrices of the users into scalar channels via higher-order generalized singular value decomposition for the common message (CM) and block diagonalization (BD) for the private messages, thereby enabling low-complexity element-by-element successive interference cancellation (SIC) and decoding at the receivers. Furthermore, the proposed SD MIMO-RSMA overcomes a critic…
Semi-definite relaxation (SDR) detector has been demonstrated to be successful in approaching maximum likelihood (ML) performance while the time complexity is only polynomial. We propose a new receiver jointly utilizing the forward error correction (FEC) code information in the SDR detection process. Strengthened by the code constraints, the joint SDR detector provides soft information of much improved reliability to downstream decoder and therefore outperforms existing receivers with substantial gain.
In Massive MIMO base stations (BSs), the hardware design needs to balance high spectral efficiency (SE) with low complexity. The level of hardware impairments (HWIs) indicates how strong the signal distortion introduced by hardware imperfections is. In particular, the analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) have an important impact on signal distortion and power consumption. This article addresses the fundamental problem of selecting the optimal hardware quality in the Massive MIMO space. In particular, we examine the optimal HWI and ADC bit allocation per BS antenna to maximize the SE. The result…
We propose an Iterative Detection and Decoding (IDD) scheme with Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes for Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems for block-fading $F = 2$ and fast fading Rayleigh channels. An IDD receiver with soft information processing that exploits the code structure and the behaviour of the log likelihood ratios (LLR)'s is developed. Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) with Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) and with Parallel Interference Cancellation (PIC) schemes are considered. The soft \textit{a posteriori} output of the decoder in a block-fading channel wi…
Massive multiuser (MU) multiple-input multiple- output (MIMO) is foreseen to be a key technology in future wireless communication systems. In this paper, we analyze the downlink performance of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based massive MU-MIMO system in which the base station (BS) is equipped with 1-bit digital-to-analog converters (DACs). Using Bussgang's theorem, we characterize the performance achievable with linear precoders (such as maximal-ratio transmission and zero forcing) in terms of bit error rate (BER). Our analysis accounts for the possibility of oversampli…
In this paper we investigate the achievable rate of LOS MIMO systems that use 1-bit quantization and spatial oversampling at the receiver. We propose that by using additional antennas at the receiver, the loss incurred due to the strong limitation of the quantization can be decreased. Mutual information results show that considerable rate gains can be achieved depending on the number and arrangement of the antennas. In some of the cases, even the full available rate from the transmitter can be attained. Furthermore, the results also reveal that two-dimensional antenna arrays can benefit more f…
In this paper, we address the message-passing receiver design for the 3D massive MIMO-OFDM systems. With the aid of the central limit argument and Taylor-series approximation, a computationally efficient receiver that performs joint channel estimation and decoding is devised by the framework of expectation propagation. Specially, the local belief defined at the channel transition function is expanded up to the second order with Wirtinger calculus, to transform the messages sent by the channel transition function to a tractable form. As a result, the channel impulse response (CIR) between each …
This work investigates the downlink performance of a multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system that employs one-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and digital-to-analog converters (DACs) in the receiving and transmitting radio frequency (RF) chains at each base station (BS) in order to reduce the power consumption. We utilize Bussgang decomposition to derive the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) channel estimates at each BS based on the quantized received uplink training signals, and the asymptotic closed-form expressions of the achievable downlink rates under one-bi…
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems have been widely acclaimed in order to provide high data rates. Recently Lattice Reduction (LR) aided detectors have been proposed to achieve near Maximum Likelihood (ML) performance with low complexity. In this paper, we develop the fixed point design of an iterative soft decision based LR-aided K-best decoder, which reduces the complexity of existing sphere decoder. A simulation based word-length optimization is presented for physical implementation of the K-best decoder. Simulations show that the fixed point result of 16 bit precision can keep b…
In this paper, we present a successive-cancellation-soft-output (SCSO) detector for an uplink multiuser multiple-input-multiple-output (MU-MIMO) system with one-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The proposed detector produces soft outputs (e.g., log-likelihood ratios (LLRs)) from one-bit quantized observations in a successive way: each user k's message is sequentially decoded from a channel decoder $k$ for $k=1,...,K$ in that order, and the previously decoded messages are exploited to improve the reliabilities of LLRs. Furthermore, we develop an efficient greedy algorithm to optimize a …
Low-resolution precoding techniques have gained considerable attention in the wireless communications area recently. Vital but hardly discussed in literature, discrete precoding in conjunction with channel coding is the subject of this study. Unlike prior studies, we propose three different soft detection methods and an iterative detection and decoding scheme that allow the utilization of channel coding in conjunction with low-resolution precoding. Besides an exact approach for computing the extrinsic information, we propose two approximations with reduced computational complexity. Numerical r…
1-bit digital-to-analog (DACs) and analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are gaining more interest in massive MIMO systems for economical and computational efficiency. We present a new precoding technique to mitigate the inter-user-interference (IUI) and the channel distortions in a 1-bit downlink MUMISO system with QPSK symbols. The transmit signal vector is optimized taking into account the 1-bit quantization. We develop a sort of mapping based on a look-up table (LUT) between the input signal and the transmit signal. The LUT is updated for each channel realization. Simulation results show a s…
In this letter, we consider the uplink of a cell-free Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network where each user is decoded by a subset of access points (APs). An additional step is introduced in the cell-free Massive MIMO processing: each AP in the uplink locally implements soft MIMO detection and then shares the resulting bit log-likelihoods on the front-haul link. The decoding of the data is performed at the central processing unit (CPU), collecting the data from the APs. The non-linear processing at the APs consists of the approximate computation of the posterior density for eac…
We consider a multi-cell massive MIMO system where a time-division duplex protocol is used to estimate the channel state information via uplink pilots. When maximum ratio combining (MRC) is used at the BSs, the re-use of pilots across cells causes the pilot contamination effect which yields interference components that do not vanish as the number of base-station (BS) antennas $M \rightarrow \infty$. When treating interference as noise (TIN), this phenomenon limits the performance of multi-cell massive MIMO systems. In this paper, we analyze more advanced schemes based on simultaneous unique de…
Massive multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple- output (MIMO) is widely believed to be a core technology for the upcoming fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication standards. The use of low-precision digital-to-analog converters (DACs) in MU-MIMO base stations is of interest because it reduces the power consumption, system costs, and raw baseband data rates. In this paper, we develop novel algorithms for downlink precoding in massive MU-MIMO systems with 1-bit DACs that support higher-order modulation schemes such as 8-PSK or 16-QAM. Specifically, we present low-complexity nonlinear precod…
In this letter, we investigate the downlink performance of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems where the base station is equipped with one-bit analogto-digital/digital-to-analog converters (ADC/DACs). Considering training-based transmission, we assume the base station (BS) employs the linear minimum mean-squared-error (LMMSE) channel estimator and treats the channel estimate as the true channel to precode the data symbols. We derive an expression for the downlink achievable rate for matched-filter (MF) precoding. A detailed analysis of the resulting power efficiency is pursue…
This paper investigates a network information flow problem for a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian wireless network with $K$-users and a single intermediate relay having $M$ antennas. In this network, each user intends to convey a multicast message to all other users while receiving $K-1$ independent messages from the other users via an intermediate relay. This network information flow is termed a MIMO Gaussian $K$-way relay channel. For this channel, we show that $\frac{K}{2}$ degrees of freedom is achievable if $M=K-1$. To demonstrate this, we come up with an encoding and decodi…
We propose a low complexity complex valued Sphere Decoding (CV-SD) algorithm, referred to as Circular Sphere Decoding (CSD) which is applicable to multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with arbitrary two dimensional (2D) constellations. CSD provides a new constraint test. This constraint test is carefully designed so that the element-wise dependency is removed in the metric computation for the test. As a result, the constraint test becomes simple to perform without restriction on its constellation structure. By additionally employing this simple test as a prescreening test, CSD reduces…
In this paper, the asymptotic performance of the lattice sequential decoder for LAttice Space-Time (LAST) coded MIMO channel is analyzed. We determine the rates achievable by lattice coding and sequential decoding applied to such a channel. The diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) under lattice sequential decoding is derived as a function of its parameter---the bias term, which is critical for controlling the amount of computations required at the decoding stage. Achieving low decoding complexity requires increasing the value of the bias term. However, this is done at the expense of losing th…
Quantized massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems are gaining more interest due to their power efficiency. We present a new precoding technique to mitigate the multi-user interference and the quantization distortions in a downlink multi-user (MU) multiple-input-single-output (MISO) system with 1-bit quantization at the transmitter. This work is restricted to PSK modulation schemes. The transmit signal vector is optimized for every desired received vector taking into account the 1-bit quantization. The optimization is based on maximizing the safety margin to the decision threshold…
We study the asymptotic outage performance of incremental redundancy automatic repeat request (INR-ARQ) transmission over the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) block-fading channels with discrete input constellations. We first show that transmission with random codes using a discrete signal constellation across all transmit antennas achieves the optimal outage diversity given by the Singleton bound. We then analyze the optimal SNR-exponent and outage diversity of INR-ARQ transmission over the MIMO block-fading channel. We show that a significant gain in outage diversity is obtained by prov…
We propose sparsity-adaptive beamspace channel estimation algorithms that improve accuracy for 1-bit data converters in all-digital millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) basestations. Our algorithms include a tuning stage based on Stein's unbiased risk estimate (SURE) that automatically selects optimal denoising parameters depending on the instantaneous channel conditions. Simulation results with line-of-sight (LoS) and non-LoS mmWave massive MIMO channel models show that our algorithms improve channel estimation accuracy with 1-bit measurements in a computatio…
We investigate massive multiple-input-multiple output (MIMO) uplink systems with 1-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) on each receiver antenna. Receivers that rely on 1-bit ADC do not need energy-consuming interfaces such as automatic gain control (AGC). This decreases both ADC building and operational costs. Our design is based on maximal ratio combining (MRC), zero-forcing (ZF), and least squares (LS) detection, taking into account the effects of the 1-bit ADC on channel estimation. Through numerical results, we show good performance of the system in terms of mutual information and symb…
Analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) stand for a significant part of the total power consumption in a massive MIMO base station. One-bit ADCs are one way to reduce power consumption. This paper presents an analysis of the spectral efficiency of single-carrier and OFDM transmission in massive MIMO systems that use one-bit ADCs. A closed-form achievable rate, i.e., a lower bound on capacity, is derived for a wideband system with a large number of channel taps that employs low-complexity linear channel estimation and symbol detection. Quantization results in two types of error in the symbol detect…
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) or multi-antenna communication is a key technique to achieve high spectral efficiency in wireless systems. For the point-to-point MIMO channel, it is a well-known result that the channel singular value decomposition (SVD) based linear precoding and decoding achieves the channel capacity, which also diagonalizes the MIMO channel into parallel single-input single-output (SISO) sub-channels for independent encoding and decoding. However, in multi-user MIMO systems, the optimal transmit covariance of each MIMO link is generally not its channel SVD based as a r…
The transmission of digital data is one of the principal tasks in modern wireless communication. Classically, the communication channel consists of one transmitter and one receiver; however, due to the constantly increasing demand in higher transmission rates, the popularity of using several receivers and transmitters has been rapidly growing. In this paper, we combine a number of fairly standard techniques from numerical linear algebra and probability to develop several (apparently novel) randomized schemes for the decoding of digital messages sent over a noisy multivariate Gaussian channel. …
Adopting one-bit analog-to-digital convertors (ADCs) for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) implementations has great potential in reducing the hardware cost and power consumption. However, distortions caused by quantization raise great challenges. In MIMO orthogonal frequency-division modulation (OFDM) detection, coarse quantization renders the orthogonal separation among subcarriers inapplicable, forcing us to deal with a problem that has a very large problem size. In this paper we study the expectation-maximization (EM) approach for one-bit MIMO-OFDM detection. The idea is to ite…
In this paper, we derive a closed-form expression for the combiner of a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) receiver equipped with a minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) estimator. We propose using variable-bit-resolution analog-to- digital converters (ADC) across radio frequency (RF) paths. The combiner designed is a function of the quantization errors across each RF path. Using very low bit resolution ADCs (1-2bits) is a popular approach with massive MIMO receiver architectures to mitigate large power demands. We show that for certain channel conditions, adopting unequal bit resolution ADCs (e…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a key technology for 5G wireless communications with a promise of significant capacity increase. The use of low-resolution data converters is crucial for massive MIMO to make the overall transmission as cost- and energy-efficient as possible. In this work, we consider a downlink millimeter-wave (mmWave) transmission scenario, where multiple users are served simultaneously by massive MIMO with one-bit digital-to-analog (D/A) converters. In particular, we propose a novel precoder design based on signal-to-leakage-plus-noise ratio (SLNR), which min…
This paper proposes an iterative detection and decoding (IDD) scheme for a cell free massive multiple input multiple output (CF-mMIMO) system. Users send coded data to the access points (APs), which is jointly detected at central processing unit (CPU). The symbols are exchanged iteratively in the form of log likelihood ratios (LLRs) between the detector and the low-density parity check codes (LPDC) decoder, increasing the coded system's performance. We propose a list-based multi-feedback diversity with successive interference cancellation (MF-SIC) to improve the performance of the CF-mMIMO. Fu…
