We introduce new metric structures on a smooth manifold (called "weak" structures) that generalize the almost contact, Sasakian, cosymplectic, etc. metric structures $(φ,ξ,η,g)$ and allow us to take a fresh look at the classical theory. We demonstrate this statement by generalizing several well-known results. We prove that any Sasakian structure is rigid, i.e., our weak Sasakian structure is homothetically equivalent to a Sasakian structure. We show that a weak almost contact structure with parallel tensor $φ$ is a weak cosymplectic structure and give an example of such a structure on the product of manifolds. We find conditions for a vector field to be a weak contact infinitesimal transformation.
We prove that every nearly Sasakian manifold of dimension greater than five is Sasakian. This provides a new criterion for an almost contact metric manifold to be Sasakian. Moreover, we classify nearly cosymplectic manifolds of dimension greater than five.
In this paper, we prove that there are no proper $CRS$ bi-warped product submanifolds other than contact CR-biwarped products in Sasakian manifolds. On the other hand, we prove that if $M$ is a $CRS$ bi-warped product of the form $M=N_T \times_{f_1}N^{n_{1}}_\perp\times_{f_2} N^{n_{2}}_θ$ in a cosymplectic manifold $\widetilde M$, then its second fundamental form $h$ satisfies the inequality: $$\|h\|^2\geq 2n_1\|\nabla(\ln f_1)\|^2+2n_2(1+2\cot^2θ)\|\nabla(\ln f_2)\|^2,$$ where $N_T,\, N^{n_{1}}_\perp$ and $N^{n_{2}}_θ$ are invariant, anti-invariant and proper pointwise slant submanifolds of $…
We present a compared analysis of some properties of 3-Sasakian and 3-cosymplectic manifolds. We construct a canonical connection on an almost 3-contact metric manifold which generalises the Tanaka-Webster connection of a contact metric manifold and we use this connection to show that a 3-Sasakian manifold does not admit any Darboux-like coordinate system. Moreover, we prove that any 3-cosymplectic manifold is Ricci-flat and admits a Darboux coordinate system if and only it is flat.
3-quasi-Sasakian manifolds were studied systematically by the authors in a recent paper as a suitable setting unifying 3-Sasakian and 3-cosymplectic geometries. This paper throws new light on their geometric structure which reveals to be generally richer compared to the 3-Sasakian subclass. In fact, it turns out that they are multiply foliated by four distinct fundamental foliations. The study of the transversal geometries with respect to these foliations allows us to link the 3-quasi-Sasakian manifolds to the more famous hyper-Kaehler and quaternionic-Kaehler geometries. Furthermore, we stron…
In this paper, we obtain some sufficient conditions for a 3-dimensional compact trans-Sasakian manifold of type $(α,β)$ to be homothetic to a Sasakian manifold. A characterization of a 3-dimensional cosymplectic manifold is also obtained.
We find some curvature properties of 3-quasi-Sasakian manifolds which are similar to some well-known identities holding in the Sasakian case. As an application, we prove that any 3-quasi-Sasakian manifold of constant horizontal sectional curvature is necessarily either 3-α-Sasakian or 3-cosymplectic.
We carry on a systematic study of nearly Sasakian manifolds. We prove that any nearly Sasakian manifold admits two types of integrable distributions with totally geodesic leaves which are, respectively, Sasakian or $5$-dimensional nearly Sasakian manifolds. As a consequence, any nearly Sasakian manifold is a contact manifold. Focusing on the $5$-dimensional case, we prove that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between nearly Sasakian structures and a special class of nearly hypo $SU(2)$-structures. By deforming such a $SU(2)$-structure one obtains in fact a Sasaki-Einstein structure. Fu…
A structure on an almost contact metric manifold is defined as a generalization of well-known cases: Sasakian, quasi-Sasakian, Kenmotsu and cosymplectic. Then we consider a semi-invariant $ξ^{\bot}$-submanifold of a manifold endowed with such a structure and two topics are studied: the integrability of distributions defined by this submanifold and characterizations for the totally umbilical case. In particular we recover results of Kenmotsu, Eum and Papaghiuc.
3-quasi-Sasakian manifolds were recently studied by the authors as a suitable setting unifying 3-Sasakian and 3-cosymplectic geometries. In this paper some geometric properties of this class of almost 3-contact metric manifolds are briefly reviewed, with an emphasis on those more related to physical applications.
As a generalization of slant submanifolds and semi-slant submanifolds, we introduce the notions of pointwise slant submanifolds and pointwise semi-slant sunmanifolds of an almost contact metric manifold. We obtain a characterization at each notion, investigate the topological properties of pointwise slant submanifolds, and give some examples of them. We also consider some distributions on cosymplectic, Sasakian, Kenmotsu manifolds and deal with some properties of warped product pointwise semi-slant submanifolds. Finally, we give some inequalities for the squared norm of the second fundamental …
The orthogonal decomposition of the Webster curvature provides us a way to characterize some canonical metrics on a pseudo-Hermitian manifold. We derive some subelliptic differential inequalities from the Weitzenböck formulas for the traceless pseudo-Hermitian Ricci tensor and the Chern-Moser tensor of Sasakian manifolds with constant pseudo-Hermitian scalar curvature and Sasakian pseudo-Einstein manifolds respectively. By means of either subelliptic estimates or maximum principle, some rigidity theorems are established to characterize Sasakian pseudo-Einstein manifolds among Sasakian manifold…
In this paper, we study the invariant and noninvariant hypersurfaces of (1,1,1) almost contact manifolds, Lorentzian almost paracontact manifolds and Lorentzian para-Sasakian manifolds, respectively. We show that a noninvariant hypersurface of an (1,1,1) almost contact manifold admits an almost product structure. We investigate hypersurfaces of affinely cosymplectic and normal (1,1,1) almost contact manifolds. It is proved that a noninvariant hypersurface of a Lorentzian almost paracontact manifold is an almost product metric manifold. Some necessary and sufficient conditions have been given f…
In this paper we study K-cosymplectic manifolds, i.e., smooth cosymplectic manifolds for which the Reeb field is Killing with respect to some Riemannian metric. These structures generalize coKähler structures, in the same way as K-contact structures generalize Sasakian structures. In analogy to the contact case, we distinguish between (quasi-)regular and irregular structures; in the regular case, the K-cosymplectic manifold turns out to be a flat circle bundle over an almost Kähler manifold. We investigate de Rham and basic cohomology of K-cosymplectic manifolds, as well as cosymplectic and Ha…
Recently, B.-Y. Chen and O. J. Garay studied pointwise slant submanifolds of almost Hermitian manifolds. By using the notion of pointwise slant submanifolds, we investigate the geometry of pointwise semi-slant submanifolds and their warped products in Sasakian and cosymplectic manifolds. We prove that there exist no proper pointwise semi-slant warped product submanifold other than contact CR-warped products in Sasakian manifolds. We give non-trivial examples of such submanifolds in cosypmlectic manifolds and obtain several fundamental results, including a characterization for warped product po…
Cosymplectic geometry can be viewed as an odd dimensional counterpart of symplectic geometry. Likely in the symplectic case, a related property which is preservation of closed forms $ω$ and $η$, refers to the theoretical possibility of further understanding a cosymplectic manifold $(M, ω, η)$ from its group of diffeomorphisms. In this paper we study the structures of the group of cosymplectic diffeomorphisms and the group of almost cosymplectic diffeomorphisms of a cosymplectic manifold $(M, ω, η)$ in threefold:first of all, we study cosymplectics counterpart of the Moser isotopy method, a pro…
Mixed 3-structures are odd-dimensional analogues of paraquaternionic structures. They appear naturally on lightlike hypersurfaces of almost paraquaternionic hermitian manifolds. We study invariant and anti-invariant submanifolds in a manifold endowed with a mixed 3-structure and a compatible (semi-Riemannian) metric. Particular attention is given to two cases of ambient space: mixed 3-Sasakian and mixed 3-cosymplectic.
The basic Dolbeault cohomology groups of a Sasakian manifold M are invariants of its characteristic foliation F (the orbit foliation of the Reeb flow). We show some fundamental properties of this cohomology, which are useful for its computation. In the first part of the article, we show that the basic Hodge numbers, the dimensions of the basic Dolbeault cohomology groups, only depend on the isomorphism class of the underlying CR structure. Equivalently, we show that the basic Hodge numbers are invariant under deformations of type I. This result reduces their computation to the quasi-regular ca…
The vector space of the tensors $\mathcal F$ of type (0,3) having the same symmetries as the covariant derivative of the fundamental form of an almost contact metric manifold is considered. A scheme of decomposition of $\mathcal F$ into orthogonal components which are invariant under the action of $U(n)\times 1$ is given. Using this decomposition there are found 12 natural basic classes of almost contact metric manifolds. The classes of cosymplectic, $α$-Sasakian, $α$-Kenmotsu, etc. manifolds fit nicely to these considerations. On the other hand, many new interesting classes of almost contact …
In this paper, warped product contact $CR$-submanifolds in Sasakian, Kenmotsu and cosymplectic manifolds are shown to possess a geometric property; namely $\mathcal{D}_T$-minimal. Taking benefit from this property, an optimal general inequality for warped product contact $CR$-submanifolds is established in both Sasakian and Kenmotsu manifolds by means of the Gauss equation, we leave cosyplectic because it is an easy structure. Moreover, a rich geometry appears when the necessity and sufficiency are proved and discussed in the equality case. Applying this general inequality, the inequalities ob…
This paper mainly focuses on the CR analogue of the three-circle theorem in a complete noncompact pseudohermitian manifold of vanishing torsion being odd dimensional counterpart of Kähler geometry. In this paper, we show that the CR three-circle theorem holds if its pseudohermitian sectional curvature is nonnegative. As an application, we confirm the first CR Yau's uniformization conjecture and obtain the CR analogue of the sharp dimension estimate for CR holomorphic functions of polynomial growth and its rigidity when the pseudohermitian sectional curvature is nonnegative. This is also the fi…
An almost contact metric structure is parametrized by a section of an associated homogeneous fibre bundle, and conditions for this to be a harmonic section, and a harmonic map, are studied. These involve the characteristic vector field, and the almost complex structure in the contact subbundle. Several examples are given where the harmonic section equations reduce to those for the characteristic field to be a harmonic section of the unit tangent bundle. These include trans-Sasakian structures, and certain nearly cosymplectic structures. On the other hand, we obtain examples where the character…
A contact stationary Legendrian submanifold (briefly, CSL submanifold) is a stationary point of the volume functional of Legendrian submanifolds in a Sasakian manifold. Much effort has been paid in the last two decades to construct examples of such manifolds, mainly by geometers using various geometric methods. But we have rare knowledge about their geometric properties till now. Recently, Y. Luo (\cite{ Luo2, Luo1}) proved that a closed CSL surface in $\mathbb{S}^5$ with the square length of its second fundamental form belonging to $[0,2]$ must be totally geodesic or be a flat minimal Legendr…
In this paper I have studied about CR(Cauchy-Riemann)-submanifolds of Lorentzian Concircular Structure manifold ((LCS)n-manifold), Lorentzian Para-Sasakian(LP)-cosymplectic manifold, S-manifold and Generalized Kenmotsu (GKM) manifold. I have discussed some results regarding distribution, structure vector field, totally geodesic submanifold, leaf etc.. I have obtained results on totally umbilical contact CR-submanifold where the anti-invariant distribution has some properties. Next, I have studied some results about D-totally geodesic CR-submanifold (D is the distribution), a contact CR-submani…
In this article we study almost contact manifolds admitting weakly Einstein metrics. We first prove that if a (2n+1)-dimensional Sasakian manifold admits a weakly Einstein metric then its scalar curvature $s$ satisfies $-6\leqslant s \leqslant 6$ for $n=1$ and $-2n(2n+1)\frac{4n^2-4n+3}{4n^2-4n-1}\leqslant s \leqslant 2n(2n+1)$ for $n\geqslant2$. Secondly, for a (2n+1)-dimensional weakly Einstein contact metric $(κ,μ)$-manifold with $κ<1$, we prove that it is flat or is locally isomorphic to the Lie group $SU(2)$, $SL(2)$, or $E(1,1)$ for $n=1$ and that for $n\geqslant2$ there are no weakly Ei…
An $f$-structure, introduced by K. Yano in 1963 and subsequently studied by a number of geometers, is a higher dimensional analog of almost complex and almost contact structures, defined by a (1,1)-tensor field $f$ on a $(2n+p)$-dimensional manifold, which satisfies $f^3 + f = 0$ and has constant rank $2n$. We recently introduced the weakened (globally framed) $f$-structure (i.e., the complex structure on $f(TM)$ is replaced by a nonsingular skew-symmetric tensor) and its subclasses of weak $K$-, ${\cal S}$-, and ${\cal C}$- structures on Riemannian manifolds with totally geodesic foliations, …
