In this paper, we deal with the problem of putting together modal worlds that operate in different logic systems. When evaluating a modal sentence $\Box φ$, we argue that it is not sufficient to inspect the truth of $φ$ in accessed worlds (possibly in different logics). Instead, ways of transferring more subtle semantic information between logical systems must be established. Thus, we will introduce modal structures that accommodate communication between logic systems by fixing a common lattice $L$ where different logics build their semantics. The semantics of each logic being considered in the modal structure is a sublattice of $L$. In this system, necessity and possibility of a statement should not solely rely on the satisfaction relation in each world and the accessibility relation. The value of a formula $\Box φ$ will be defined in terms of a comparison between the values of $φ$ in accessible worlds and the common lattice $L$. We will investigate natural instances where formulas $φ$ can be said to be necessary$/$possible even though all accessible world falsify $φ$. Finally, we will discuss frames that characterize dynamic relations between logic systems: classically increasing, classically decreasing and dialectic frames.
We give a sufficient condition for Kripke completeness of modal logics enriched with the transitive closure modality. More precisely, we show that if a logic admits what we call definable filtration (ADF), then such an expansion of the logic is complete; in addition, has the finite model property, and again ADF. This argument can be iterated, and as an application we obtain the finite model property for PDL-like expansions of logics that ADF.
The aim of the paper is to study the topological modal logic of $T_0$ spaces, with the difference modality (for $T_n$, where $n\geq1 $ the corresponding logics were known). We consider propositional modal logic with two modal operators $\square$ and $[\ne]$. $\square$ is interpreted as an interior operator and $[\ne]$ corresponds to the inequality relation. We introduce the logic $S4DT_0$ and show that $S4DT_0$ is the logic of all $T_0$ spaces and has the finite model property.
Let ML(U^+) denote the fragment of modal logic extended with the universal modality in which the universal modality occurs only positively. We characterize the relative definability of ML(U^+) relative to finite transitive frames in the spirit of the well-known Goldblatt-Thomason theorem. We show that a class F of Kripke frames is definable in ML(U^+) relative to finite transitive frames if and only if F is closed under taking generated subframes and bounded morphic images. In addition, we study modal definability in team-based logics. We study (extended) modal dependence logic, (extended) mod…
This paper presents the logic QRC$_1$, which is a strictly positive fragment of quantified modal logic. The intended reading of the diamond modality is that of consistency of a formal theory. Predicate symbols are interpreted as parametrized axiomatizations. We prove arithmetical soundness of the logic QRC$_1$ with respect to this arithmetical interpretation. Quantified provability logic is known to be undecidable. However, the undecidability proof cannot be performed in our signature and arithmetical reading. We conjecture the logic QRC$_1$ to be arithmetically complete. This paper takes the …
We introduce a category of vector spaces modelling full propositional linear logic, similar to probabilistic coherence spaces and to Koethe sequences spaces. Its objects are {\it rigged sequences spaces}, Banach spaces of sequences, with norms defined from pairing with finite sequences, and morphisms are bounded linear maps, continuous in a suitable topology. The main interest of the work is that our model gives a realization of the free linear logic exponentials construction.
The intuitionistic implication and hence the notion of function space in constructive disciplines is both non-geometric and impredicative. In this paper we try to solve both of these problems by first introducing weak exponential objects as a formalization for predicative function spaces and then by proposing modal spaces as a way to introduce a natural family of geometric predicative implications based on the interplay between the concepts of time and space. This combination then leads to a brand new family of modal propositional logics with predicative implications and then to topological se…
We study model and frame definability of various modal logics. Let ML(A+) denote the fragment of modal logic extended with the universal modality in which the universal modality occurs only positively. We show that a class of Kripke models is definable in ML(A+) if and only if the class is elementary and closed under disjoint unions and surjective bisimulations. We also characterise the definability of ML(A+) in the spirit of the well-known Goldblatt--Thomason theorem. We show that an elementary class F of Kripke frames is definable in ML(A+) if and only if F is closed under taking generated s…
Recently there have been numerous proposed solutions to the problem of logical omniscience in doxastic and epistemic logic. Though these solutions display an impressive breadth of subtlety and motivation, the crux of these approaches seems to have a common theme-minor revisions around the ubiquitous Kripke semantics-rooted approach. In addition, the psychological mechanisms at work in and around both belief and knowledge have been left largely untouched. In this paper, we cut straight to the core of the problem of logical omniscience, taking a psychologically-rooted approach, taking as bedrock…
Supervenience is an important philosophical concept. In this paper, inspired by the supervenience-determined consequence relation and the semantics of agreement operator, we introduce a modal logic of supervenience, which has a dyadic operator of supervenience as a sole modality. The semantics of supervenience modality is very natural to correspond to the supervenience-determined consequence relation, in a quite similar way that the strict implication corresponds to the inference-determined consequence relation. We show that this new logic is more expressive than the modal logic of agreement, …
We investigate the modal logic of stepwise removal of objects, both for its intrinsic interest as a logic of quantification without replacement, and as a pilot study to better understand the complexity jumps between dynamic epistemic logics of model transformations and logics of freely chosen graph changes that get registered in a growing memory. After introducing this logic ($\textsf{MLSR}$) and its corresponding removal modality, we analyze its expressive power and prove a bisimulation characterization theorem. We then provide a complete Hilbert-style axiomatization for the logic of stepwise…
In a 1985 commentary to his collected works, Kolmogorov remarked that his 1932 paper "was written in hope that with time, the logic of solution of problems [i.e., intuitionistic logic] will become a permanent part of a [standard] course of logic. A unified logical apparatus was intended to be created, which would deal with objects of two types - propositions and problems." We construct such a formal system, as well as its predicate version QHC, which is a conservative extension of both the intuitionistic predicate calculus QH and the classical predicate calculus QC. The only new connectives ? …
The branch of provability logic investigates the provability-based behavior of the mathematical theories. In a more precise way, it studies the relation between a mathematical theory $T$ and a modal logic $L$ via the provability interpretation which interprets the modality as the provability predicate of $T$. In this paper we will extend this relation to investigate the provability-based behavior of a hierarchy of theories. More precisely, using the modal language with infinitely many modalities, $\{\Box_n\}_{n=0}^{\infty}$, we will define the hierarchical counterparts of some of the classical…
In this paper, we introduce $\textit{partial}$ dependency modality $\mathcal{D}$ into epistemic logic so as to reason about $\textit{partial}$ dependency relationship in Kripke models. The resulted dependence epistemic logic possesses decent expressivity and beautiful properties. Several interesting examples are provided, which highlight this logic's practical usage. The logic's bisimulation is then discussed, and we give a sound and strongly complete axiomatization for a sub-language of the logic.
Given a class $\mathcal C$ of models, a binary relation ${\mathcal R}$ between models, and a model-theoretic language $L$, we consider the modal logic and the modal algebra of the theory of $\mathcal C$ in $L$ where the modal operator is interpreted via $\mathcal R$. We discuss how modal theories of $\mathcal C$ and ${\mathcal R}$ depend on the model-theoretic language, their Kripke completeness, and expressibility of the modality inside $L$. We calculate such theories for the submodel and the quotient relations. We prove a downward Löwenheim--Skolem theorem for first-order language expanded w…
We study the logic of neighbourhood models with pointwise intersection, as a means to characterize multi-modal logics. Pointwise intersection takes us from a set of neighbourhood sets $\mathcal{N}_i$ (one for each member $i$ of a set $G$, used to interpret the modality $\square_i$) to a new neighbourhood set $\mathcal{N}_G$, which in turn allows us to interpret the operator $\square_G$. Here, $X$ is in the neighbourhood for $G$ if and only if $X$ equals the intersection of some $\mathcal{Y} = \{Y_i \mid i\in G\}$. We show that the notion of pointwise intersection has various applications in ep…
We prove strong completeness results for some modal logics with the universal modality, with respect to their topological semantics over 0-dimensional dense-in-themselves metric spaces. We also use failure of compactness to show that, for some languages and spaces, no standard modal deductive system is strongly complete.
Sabotage modal logic (SML) is a kind of dynamic logics. It extends static modal logic with a dynamic modality which is interpreted as "after deleting an arrow in the frame, the formula is true". In the present paper, we are aiming at solving an open problem, namely giving a Sahlqvist-type correspondence theorem for sabotage modal logic. In this paper, we define sabotage Sahlqvist formulas and give an algorithm to compute the first-order correspondents of sabotage Sahlqvist formulas. We give some remarks and future directions at the end of the paper.
Ken Pledger devised a one-sorted approach to the incidence relation of plane geometries, using structures that also support models of propositional modal logic. He introduced a modal system 12g that is valid in one-sorted projective planes, proved that it has finitely many non-equivalent modalities, and identified all possible modality patterns of its extensions. One of these extensions 8f is valid in elliptic planes. These results were presented in his doctoral dissertation [14], which has been reprinted in the Australasian Journal of Logic, vol. 18, no. 4. https://doi.org/10.26686/ajl.v18i4.…
This paper discusses proof-theoretic semantics, the project of specifying the meanings of the logical constants in terms of rules of inference governing them. I concentrate on Michael Dummett's and Dag Prawitz' philosophical motivations and give precise characterisations of the crucial notions of harmony and stability, placed in the context of proving normalisation results in systems of natural deduction. I point out a problem for defining the meaning of negation in this framework and prospects for an account of the meanings of modal operators in terms of rules of inference.
We consider the modality "$φ$ is true in every $σ$-centered forcing extension", denoted $\squareφ$, and its dual "$φ$ is true in some $σ$-centered forcing extension", denoted $\lozengeφ$ (where $φ$ is a statement in set theory), which give rise to the notion of a "principle of $σ$-centered forcing". We prove that if ZFC is consistent, then the modal logic of $σ$-centered forcing, i.e. the ZFC-provable principles of $σ$-centered forcing, is exactly $\mathsf{S4.2}$. We also generalize this result to other related classes of forcing.
We propose four axiomatic systems for intuitionistic linear temporal logic and show that each of these systems is sound for a class of structures based either on Kripke frames or on dynamic topological systems. Our topological semantics features a new interpretation for the `henceforth' modality that is a natural intuitionistic variant of the classical one. Using the soundness results, we show that the four logics obtained from the axiomatic systems are distinct. Finally, we show that when the language is restricted to the `henceforth'-free fragment, the set of valid formulas for the relationa…
Modal description logics feature modalities that capture dependence of knowledge on parameters such as time, place, or the information state of agents. E.g., the logic S5-ALC combines the standard description logic ALC with an S5-modality that can be understood as an epistemic operator or as representing (undirected) change. This logic embeds into a corresponding modal first-order logic S5-FOL. We prove a modal characterization theorem for this embedding, in analogy to results by van Benthem and Rosen relating ALC to standard first-order logic: We show that S5-ALC with only local roles is, bot…
The one-variable fragment of any first-order logic may be considered as a modal logic, where the universal and existential quantifiers are replaced by a box and diamond modality, respectively. In several cases, axiomatizations of algebraic semantics for these logics have been obtained: most notably, for the modal counterparts S5 and MIPC of the one-variable fragments of first-order classical logic and intuitionistic logic, respectively. Outside the setting of first-order intermediate logics, however, a general approach is lacking. This paper provides the basis for such an approach in the setti…
We propose a semantic representation of the standard quantum logic QL within a classical, normal modal logic, and this via a lattice-embedding of orthomodular lattices into Boolean algebras with one modal operator. Thus our classical logic is a completion of the quantum logic QL. In other words, we refute Birkhoff and von Neumann's classic thesis that the logic (the formal character) of Quantum Mechanics would be non-classical as well as Putnam's thesis that quantum logic (of his kind) would be the correct logic for propositional inference in general. The propositional logic of Quantum Mechani…
The logic of bunched implications (BI) is a substructural logic that forms the backbone of separation logic, the much studied logic for reasoning about heap-manipulating programs. Although the proof theory and metatheory of BI are mathematically involved, the formalization of important metatheoretical results is still incipient. In this paper we present a self-contained formalized, in the Coq proof assistant, proof of a central metatheoretical property of BI: cut elimination for its sequent calculus. The presented proof is *semantic*, in the sense that is obtained by interpreting sequents in a…
