We extend the meet-implication fragment of propositional intuitionistic logic with a meet-preserving modality. We give semantics based on semilattices and a duality result with a suitable notion of descriptive frame. As a consequence we obtain completeness and identify a common (modal) fragment of a large class of modal intuitionistic logics. We recognise this logic as a dialgebraic logic, and as a consequence obtain expressivity-somewhere-else. Within the dialgebraic framework, we then investigate the extension of the meet-implication fragment of propositional intuitionistic logic with a monotone modality and prove completeness and expressivity-somewhere-else for it.
In this work we study the decidability of a class of global modal logics arising from Kripke frames evaluated over certain residuated lattices, known in the literature as modal many-valued logics. We exhibit a large family of these modal logics which are undecidable, in contrast with classical modal logic and propositional logics defined over the same classes of algebras. This family includes the global modal logics arising from Kripke frames evaluated over the standard Lukasiewicz and Product algebras. We later refine the previous result, and prove that global modal Lukasiewicz and Product lo…
We study the expressive power of various modal logics with team semantics. We show that exactly the properties of teams that are downward closed and closed under team k-bisimulation, for some finite k, are definable in modal logic extended with intuitionistic disjunction. Furthermore, we show that the expressive power of modal logic with intuitionistic disjunction and extended modal dependence logic coincide. Finally we establish that any translation from extended modal dependence logic into modal logic with intuitionistic disjunction increases the size of some formulas exponentially.
We characterise non-distributive positive logic as the fragment of a single-sorted first-order language that is preserved by a new notion of simulation called a meet-simulation. Meet-simulations distinguish themselves from simulations because they relate pairs of states from one model to single states from another. En route to this result we use a more traditional notion of simulations and prove a Hennessy-Milner style theorem for it, using an analogue of modal saturation called meet-compactness.
We prove a Goldblatt-Thomason theorem for dialgebraic intuitionistic logics, and instantiate it to Goldblatt-Thomason theorems for a wide variety of modal intuitionistic logics from the literature.
We briefly examine the modal formulae that can be derived in Multiplicative Additive Linear Logic (MALL) and some extensions by using Tarksi's extensional modal operators. We also breifly compare this with a substructural form of the modal logic K.
We consider propositional modal logic with two modal operators $\Box$ and $\D$. In topological semantics $\Box$ is interpreted as an interior operator and $\D$ as difference. We show that some important topological properties are expressible in this language. In addition, we present a few logics and proofs of f.m.p. and of completeness theorems.
Modal inclusion logic is the extension of basic modal logic with inclusion atoms, and its semantics is defined on Kripke models with teams. A team of a Kripke model is just a subset of its domain. In this paper we give a complete characterisation for the expressive power of modal inclusion logic: a class of Kripke models with teams is definable in modal inclusion logic if and only if it is closed under k-bisimulation for some integer k, it is closed under unions, and it has the empty team property. We also prove that the same expressive power can be obtained by adding a single unary nonemptine…
Sabotage modal logic (SML) is a kind of dynamic logics. It extends static modal logic with a dynamic modality which is interpreted as "after deleting an arrow in the frame, the formula is true". In the present paper, we are aiming at solving an open problem, namely giving a Sahlqvist-type correspondence theorem for sabotage modal logic. In this paper, we define sabotage Sahlqvist formulas and give an algorithm to compute the first-order correspondents of sabotage Sahlqvist formulas. We give some remarks and future directions at the end of the paper.
Analytic proof calculi are introduced for box and diamond fragments of basic modal fuzzy logics that combine the Kripke semantics of modal logic K with the many-valued semantics of Gödel logic. The calculi are used to establish completeness and complexity results for these fragments.
We define a family of propositional constructive modal logics corresponding each to a different classical modal system. The logics are defined in the style of Wijesekera's constructive modal logic, and are both proof-theoretically and semantically motivated. On the one hand, they correspond to the single-succedent restriction of standard sequent calculi for classical modal logics. On the other hand, they are obtained by incorporating the hereditariness of intuitionistic Kripke models into the classical satisfaction clauses for modal formulas. We show that, for the considered classical logics, …
We introduce a family of modal expansions of Łukasiewicz logic that are designed to accommodate modal translations of generalized basic logic (as formulated with exchange, weakening, and falsum). We further exhibit algebraic semantics for each logic in this family, in particular showing that all of them are algebraizable in the sense of Blok and Pigozzi. Using this algebraization result and an analysis of congruences in the pertinent varieties, we establish that each of the introduced modal Łukasiewicz logics has a local deduction-detachment theorem. By applying Jipsen and Montagna's poset pro…
Modal description logics feature modalities that capture dependence of knowledge on parameters such as time, place, or the information state of agents. E.g., the logic S5-ALC combines the standard description logic ALC with an S5-modality that can be understood as an epistemic operator or as representing (undirected) change. This logic embeds into a corresponding modal first-order logic S5-FOL. We prove a modal characterization theorem for this embedding, in analogy to results by van Benthem and Rosen relating ALC to standard first-order logic: We show that S5-ALC with only local roles is, bot…
The aim of this paper is to propose a many-valued modal framework to formalize reasoning with both graded preferences and propositions, in the style of van Benthem et al.'s classical modal logics for preferences. To do so, we start from Bou et al.'s minimal modal logic over a finite and linearly ordered residuated lattice. We then define appropriate extensions on a multi-modal language with graded modalities, both for weak and strict preferences, and with truth-constants. Actually, the presence of truth-constants in the language allows us to show that the modal operators Box and Diamond of the…
We propose a new version of formula size game for modal logic. The game characterizes the equivalence of pointed Kripke-models up to formulas of given numbers of modal operators and binary connectives. Our game is similar to the well-known Adler-Immerman game. However, due to a crucial difference in the definition of positions of the game, its winning condition is simpler, and the second player (duplicator) does not have a trivial optimal strategy. Thus, unlike the Adler-Immerman game, our game is a genuine two-person game. We illustrate the use of the game by proving a nonelementary succinctn…
We study model and frame definability of various modal logics. Let ML(A+) denote the fragment of modal logic extended with the universal modality in which the universal modality occurs only positively. We show that a class of Kripke models is definable in ML(A+) if and only if the class is elementary and closed under disjoint unions and surjective bisimulations. We also characterise the definability of ML(A+) in the spirit of the well-known Goldblatt--Thomason theorem. We show that an elementary class F of Kripke frames is definable in ML(A+) if and only if F is closed under taking generated s…
A famous result, conjectured by Gödel in 1932 and proved by McKinsey and Tarski in 1948, says that $φ$ is a theorem of intuitionistic propositional logic IPC iff its Gödel-translation $φ'$ is a theorem of modal logic S4. In this paper, we extend an intuitionistic version of modal logic S1+SP, introduced in our previous paper (S. Lewitzka, Algebraic semantics for a modal logic close to S1, J. Logic and Comp., doi:10.1093/logcom/exu067) to a classical modal logic L and prove the following: a propositional formula $φ$ is a theorem of IPC iff $\squareφ$ is a theorem of L (actually, we show: $Φ\vda…
We prove strong completeness results for some modal logics with the universal modality, with respect to their topological semantics over 0-dimensional dense-in-themselves metric spaces. We also use failure of compactness to show that, for some languages and spaces, no standard modal deductive system is strongly complete.
We establish a formal connection between algorithmic correspondence theory and certain dual characterization results for finite lattices, similar to Nation's characterization of a hierarchy of pseudovarieties of finite lattices, progressively generalizing finite distributive lattices. This formal connection is mediated through monotone modal logic. Indeed, we adapt the correspondence algorithm ALBA to the setting of monotone modal logic, and we use a certain duality-induced encoding of finite lattices as monotone neighbourhood frames to translate lattice terms into formulas in monotone modal l…
We investigate the relationship between recursive enumerability and elementary frame definability in first-order predicate modal logic. On the one hand, it is well-known that every first-order predicate modal logic complete with respect to an elementary class of Kripke frames, i.e., a class of frames definable by a classical first-order formula, is recursively enumerable. On the other, numerous examples are known of predicate modal logics, based on `natural' propositional modal logics with essentially second-order Kripke semantics, that are either not recursively enumerable or Kripke incomplet…
Our concern is the axiomatisation problem for modal and algebraic logics that correspond to various fragments of two-variable first-order logic with counting quantifiers. In particular, we consider modal products with Diff, the propositional unimodal logic of the difference operator. We show that the two-dimensional product logic Diff x Diff is non-finitely axiomatisable, but can be axiomatised by infinitely many Sahlqvist axioms. We also show that its `square' version (the modal counterpart of the substitution and equality free fragment of two-variable first-order logic with counting to two) …
Topological semantics for modal logics has recently gained new momentum in many different branches of logic. In this paper, we will consider the topological semantics of both classical and paraconsistent modal logics. This work is a new step in the research program that focuses on paraconsistent systems from geometric and topological point of view. Here, we discuss the functional transformations in paraconsistent and classical modal cases: how to transform one classical or paraconsistent topological model to another, how to transform one transformation to another in a validity preserving way. …
We define a family of intuitionistic non-normal modal logics; they can bee seen as intuitionistic counterparts of classical ones. We first consider monomodal logics, which contain only one between Necessity and Possibility. We then consider the more important case of bimodal logics, which contain both modal operators. In this case we define several interactions between Necessity and Possibility of increasing strength, although weaker than duality. For all logics we provide both a Hilbert axiomatisation and a cut-free sequent calculus, on its basis we also prove their decidability. We then give…
We introduce a class of neighbourhood frames for graded modal logic embedding Kripke frames into neighbourhood frames. This class of neighbourhood frames is shown to be first-order definable but not modally definable. We also obtain a new definition of graded bisimulation with respect to Kripke frames by modifying the definition of monotonic bisimulation.
This paper aims at providing a comprehensive solution to the archaic open problem: how to define semantics of three-valued modal logic with vivid intuitive picture, convincing philosophical justification as well as versatile practical usage. Based on an existing line of work concerned with investigating three-valued logic out of innovative angles of view, we adopt a detour approach to interpret three-valued logic from a four-valued perspective, which results in the invention of an universal and systematic methodology for developing, explaining as well as utilizing three-valued modal logic. We …
We investigate the modal logic of stepwise removal of objects, both for its intrinsic interest as a logic of quantification without replacement, and as a pilot study to better understand the complexity jumps between dynamic epistemic logics of model transformations and logics of freely chosen graph changes that get registered in a growing memory. After introducing this logic ($\textsf{MLSR}$) and its corresponding removal modality, we analyze its expressive power and prove a bisimulation characterization theorem. We then provide a complete Hilbert-style axiomatization for the logic of stepwise…
Justification logics are modal-like logics with the additional capability of recording the reason, or justification, for modalities in syntactic structures, called justification terms. Justification logics can be seen as explicit counterparts to modal logic. The behavior and interaction of agents in distributed system is often modeled using logics of knowledge and time. In this paper, we sketch some preliminary ideas on how the modal knowledge part of such logics of knowledge and time could be replaced with an appropriate justification logic.
There has been a significant interest in extending various modal logics with intersection, the most prominent examples being epistemic and doxastic logics with distributed knowledge. Completeness proofs for such logics tend to be complicated, in particular on model classes such as S5 like in standard epistemic logic, mainly due to the undefinability of intersection of modalities in standard modal logics. A standard proof method for the S5 case was outlined in [8] and later explicated in more detail in [13], using an "unraveling-folding method" case to achieve a treelike model to deal with the …

In this paper a conditional logic is defined and studied. This conditional logic, DmBL, is constructed as a deterministic counterpart to the Bayesian conditional. The logic is unrestricted, so that any logical operations are allowed. A notion of logical independence is also defined within the logic itself. This logic is shown to be non-trivial and is not reduced to classical propositions. A model is constructed for the logic. Completeness results are proved. It is shown that any unconditioned probability can be extended to the whole logic DmBL. The Bayesian conditional is then recovered from t…
In this paper a conditional logic is defined and studied. This conditional logic, DmBL, is constructed as close as possible to the Bayesian and is unrestricted, that is one is able to use any operator without restriction. A notion of logical independence is also defined within the logic itself. This logic is shown to be non trivial and is not reduced to classical propositions. A model is constructed for the logic. Completeness results are proved. It is shown that any unconditioned probability can be extended to the whole logic DmBL. The Bayesian is then recovered from the probabilistic DmBL. A…
We investigate some modal operators of necessity and possibility in the context of meet-complemented (not necessarily distributive) lattices. We proceed in stages. We compare our operators with others.
The aim of the paper is to study the topological modal logic of $T_0$ spaces, with the difference modality (for $T_n$, where $n\geq1 $ the corresponding logics were known). We consider propositional modal logic with two modal operators $\square$ and $[\ne]$. $\square$ is interpreted as an interior operator and $[\ne]$ corresponds to the inequality relation. We introduce the logic $S4DT_0$ and show that $S4DT_0$ is the logic of all $T_0$ spaces and has the finite model property.
Weakly Aggregative Modal Logic (WAML) is a collection of disguised polyadic modal logics with n-ary modalities whose arguments are all the same. WAML has some interesting applications on epistemic logic and logic of games, so we study some basic model theoretical aspects of WAML in this paper. Specifically, we give a van Benthem-Rosen characterization theorem of WAML based on an intuitive notion of bisimulation and show that each basic WAML system K_n lacks Craig Interpolation.
This paper investigates first-order game logic and first-order modal mu-calculus, which extend their propositional modal logic counterparts with first-order modalities of interpreted effects such as variable assignments. Unlike in the propositional case, both logics are shown to have the same expressive power and their proof calculi to have the same deductive power. Both calculi are also mutually relatively complete. In the presence of differential equations, corollaries obtain usable and complete translations between differential game logic, a logic for the deductive verification of hybrid ga…
We show that the standard Gödel modal logics, as initially introduced by Caicedo and Rodriguez in \cite{CR2009,CR2010}, are not realized by the basic Gödel justification logics although being related by the forgetful projection.
In this paper, we investigate Rosser provability predicates whose provability logics are normal modal logics. First, we prove that there exists a Rosser provability predicate whose provability logic is exactly the normal modal logic ${\sf KD}$. Secondly, we introduce a new normal modal logic ${\sf KDR}$ which is a proper extension of ${\sf KD}$, and prove that there exists a Rosser provability predicate whose provability logic includes ${\sf KDR}$.
Modal dependence logics are modal logics defined on the basis of team semantics and have the downward closure property. In this paper, we introduce sound and complete deduction systems for the major modal dependence logics, especially those with intuitionistic connectives in their languages. We also establish a concrete connection between team semantics and single-world semantics, and show that modal dependence logics can be interpreted as variants of intuitionistic modal logics.

Bayesian reasoning plays a significant role both in human rationality and in machine learning. In this paper, we introduce transfinite modal logic, which combines modal logic with ordinal arithmetic, in order to formalize Bayesian reasoning semi-quantitatively. Technically, we first investigate some nontrivial properties of ordinal arithmetic, which then enable us to expand normal modal logic's semantics naturally and elegantly onto the novel transfinite modal logic, while still keeping the ordinary definition of Kripke models totally intact. Despite all the transfinite mathematical definition…
