We present the equation of state of infinite neutron matter as obtained from highly-realistic Hamiltonians that include nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon coordinate-space potentials. We benchmark three independent many-body methods: Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone (BBG), Fermi hypernetted chain/single-operator chain (FHNC/SOC), and auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo (AFDMC). We find them to provide similar equations of state when the Argonne $v_{18}$ and the Argonne $v_{6}^\prime$ nucleon-nucleon potentials are used in combination with the Urbana IX three-body force. Only at densities larger than about 1.5 the nuclear saturation density ($ρ_0 = 0.16\,\rm{fm}^{-3}$) the FHNC/SOC energies are appreciably lower than the other two approaches. The AFDMC calculations carried out with all of the Norfolk potentials fitted to reproduce the experimental trinucleon ground-state energies and $nd$ doublet scattering length yield unphysically bound neutron matter, associated with the formation of neutron droplets. Including tritium $β$-decay in the fitting procedure, as in the second family of Norfolk potentials, mitigates but does not completely resolve this problem. An excellent agreement between the BBG and AFDMC results is found for the subset of Norfolk interactions that do not make neutron-matter collapse, while the FHNC/SOC equations of state are moderately softer.
The strongly isospin-dependent tensor force leads to short-range correlations (SRC) between neutron-proton (deuteron-like) pairs much stronger than those between proton-proton and neutron-neutron pairs. As a result of the short-range correlations, the single-nucleon momentum distribution develops a high-momentum tail above the Fermi surface. Because of the strongly isospin-dependent short-range correlations, in neutron-rich matter a higher fraction of protons will be depleted from its Fermi sea and populate above the Fermi surface compared to neutrons. This isospin-dependent nucleon momentum d…
Nucleon-nucleon short-range correlations (SRCs) induce a high momentum tail (HMT) in the single-nucleon momentum distribution function $n_{ǩ}^J(ρ,δ)$ in cold neutron-rich matter. While there are clear experimental evidences that the SRC/HMT effects are different for neutrons and protons and their strengths depend strongly on the isospin asymmetry of finite nuclei mostly based on electron-nucleus scattering experiments, much less is known experimentally about the SRC/HMT effects in the dense neutron-rich matter. To facilitate further explorations of SRC/HMT effects in dense neutron-rich matter …
An experimental opportunity is presented for the future to measure possible P- and T-non-invariant axion-like interaction between nucleons in a Fm range. This interaction may be searched for in the measurement spin-dependent asymmetry of scattering of polarized neutrons in a keV-MeV energy range by heavy nuclei.
We calculate the properties of neutron matter and highlight the physics of chiral three-nucleon forces. For neutrons, only the long-range 2 pi-exchange interactions of the leading chiral three-nucleon forces contribute, and we derive density-dependent two-body interactions by summing the third particle over occupied states in the Fermi sea. Our results for the energy suggest that neutron matter is perturbative at nuclear densities. We study in detail the theoretical uncertainties of the neutron matter energy, provide constraints for the symmetry energy and its density dependence, and explore t…
Mean free paths and in-medium scattering cross sections of energetic nucleons in neutron-rich nucleonic matter within the relativistic impulse approximation
This paper deals with the possible motion of nucleons in the nucleus, which is due to realistic inter-nucleonic forces. This approach provides new or more substantiated conclusions about the nuclear structure than those based on the effective interaction of nucleons, while the shell model of the nucleus may lead to questionable conclusions regarding the nuclear structure and nuclear reaction mechanisms.
The four-body equations of Alt, Grassberger and Sandhas are solved for the neutron-${}^3$H scattering at energies above the four-nucleon breakup threshold. The accuracy and practical applicability of the employed complex energy method is significantly improved by the use of integration with the special weights. This allows to obtain fully converged results with realistic nuclear interactions. A satisfactory description of the existing neutron-${}^3$H elastic scattering data is obtained.
The relativistic neutrino emissivity of the nucleonic direct URCA processes in neutron star matter are investigated within the relativistic Hartree-Fock approximation. We study particularly the influences of the tensor couplings of vector mesons $ω$ and $ρ$ on the nucleonic direct URCA processes. It is found that the inclusion of the tensor couplings of vector mesons $ω$ and $ρ$ can slightly increase the maximum mass of neutron stars. In addition, the results indicate that the tensor couplings of vector mesons $ω$ and $ρ$ lead to obvious enhancement of the total neutrino emissivity for the nuc…
The neutron-proton effective $k$-mass splitting in asymmetric nucleonic matter of isospin asymmetry $δ$ and normal density is found to be $m^{*}_{n-p}\equiv(m^{*}_{n}-m^{*}_{p})/m=(0.41 \pm0.15)δ$ from analyzing globally 1088 sets of reaction and angular differential cross sections of proton elastic scattering on 130 targets with beam energies from 0.783 MeV to 200 MeV, and 1161 sets of data of neutron elastic scattering on 104 targets with beam energies from 0.05 MeV to 200 MeV within an isospin dependent non-relativistic optical potential model. It sets a useful reference for testing model p…
We study excited-state properties of neutron-rich calcium isotopes based on chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions. We first discuss the details of our many-body framework, investigate convergence properties, and for two-nucleon interactions benchmark against coupled-cluster calculations. We then focus on the spectroscopy of 47-56Ca, finding that with both 3N forces and an extended pfg9/2 valence space, we obtain a good level of agreement with experiment. We also study electromagnetic transitions and find that experimental data are well described by our calculations. In addition, we provid…
The broad range of accumulated experimental data on the binding energies for single-particle states in nuclei is examined as a function of the constituent number of neutrons and protons and an unexpectedly simple pattern emerges. The dependence of the energies of neutron states on the number of constituent protons, or of proton states on the number of neutrons, are very similar to each other and the sign reflects the well-known strong attraction. For the same kind of nucleons changing as in the state -- energies for neutron states with neutron number changing or proton states with protons -- t…
We present quantum Monte Carlo calculations of light nuclei, neutron-$α$ scattering, and neutron matter using local two- and three-nucleon ($3N$) interactions derived from chiral effective field theory up to next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO). The two undetermined $3N$ low-energy couplings are fit to the $^4$He binding energy and, for the first time, to the spin-orbit splitting in the neutron-$α$ $P$-wave phase shifts. Furthermore, we investigate different choices of local $3N$-operator structures and find that chiral interactions at N$^2$LO are able to simultaneously reproduce the proper…
For more than half a century, nucleons are considered to move continuously in the nuclei. Recent electron-scattering experiments indicate about 20$\sim$25\% nucleons in heavier nuclei are involved in the neutron-proton short-range correlations. Nucleons in the nuclei thus have abnormal behavior unlike those in the non-interaction fermi gas. In the neutron-rich nuclei, around the Fermi momentum, the neutron-proton short-range correlations lead to a momentum gap in the proton momentum distribution, which is circumstantially supported by the pionic experimental data. Likewise, there should also b…
Various kinds of isovector nucleon effective masses are used in the literature to characterize the momentum/energy dependence of the nucleon symmetry potential or self-energy due to the space/time non-locality of the underlying isovector strong interaction in neutron-rich nucleonic matter. The multifaceted studies on nucleon isovector effective masses are multi-disciplinary in nature. Besides structures, masses and low-lying excited states of nuclei as well as nuclear reactions, studies of the isospin dependence of short-range correlations in nuclei from scatterings of high-energy electrons an…
We study the spectra of neutron-rich oxygen isotopes based on chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions. First, we benchmark our many-body approach by comparing ground-state energies to coupled-cluster results for the same two-nucleon interaction, with overall good agreement. We then calculate bound excited states in 21,22,23O, focusing on the role of three-nucleon forces, in the standard sd shell and an extended sdf7/2p3/2 valence space. Chiral three-nucleon forces provide important one- and two-body contributions between valence neutrons. We find that both these contributions and an extende…
Nucleon-Nucleon Phase Shifts and Pairing in Neutron Matter and Nuclear Matter
Within a relaxation time approach using free nucleon-nucleon cross sections modified by the in-medium nucleon masses that are determined from an isospin- and momentum-dependent effective nucleon-nucleon interaction, we investigate the specific shear viscosity ($η/s$) of neutron-rich nucleonic matter near its liquid-gas phase transition. It is found that as the nucleonic matter is heated at fixed pressure or compressed at fixed temperature, its specific shear viscosity shows a valley shape in the temperature or density dependence, with the minimum located at the boundary of the phase transition…
The superfluid pairing gap of neutron matter is calculated in the framework of Quark Compound Bag model with nucleon-nucleon interactions generated by the s-channel exchange of Jaffe-Low primitives (6-quark states).
We consider the thermal conductivity, shear viscosity, and momentum relaxation rates in the nucleon cores of the neutron stars. We study how the choice of the nuclear interaction and the model for three-body forces may affect these transport coefficients calculated within the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock many-body nuclear theory. We find that at relatively large densities the model dependence of the results is substantial. In addition we provide the analytical approximations which allow to incorporate our results in practical simulations.
The well-known Migdal-Luttinger theorem states that the jump of the single-nucleon momentum distribution at the Fermi surface is equal to the inverse of the nucleon effective E-mass. Recent experiments studying short-range correlations (SRC) in nuclei using electron-nucleus scatterings at the Jefferson National Laboratory (JLAB) together with model calculations constrained significantly the Migdal-Luttinger jump at saturation density of nuclear matter. We show that the corresponding nucleon effective E-mass is consequently constrained to $M_0^{\ast,\rm{E}}/M\approx2.22\pm0.35$ in symmetric nuc…
We have studied neutron-rich carbon isotopes in terms of the shell model employing a realistic effective hamiltonian derived from the chiral N3LOW nucleon-nucleon potential. The single-particle energies and effective two-body interaction have been both determined within the framework of the time-dependent degenerate linked-diagram perturbation theory. The calculated results are in very good agreement with the available experimental data, providing a sound description of this isotopic chain toward the neutron dripline. The correct location of the dripline is reproduced.
We perform simulations of the Kelvin-Helmholtz cooling phase of proto-neutron stars with a new numerical code in spherical symmetry and using the quasi-static approximation. We use for the first time the full set of charged-current neutrino-nucleon reactions, including neutron decay and modified Urca processes, together with the energy-dependent numerical representation for the inclusion of nuclear correlations with random-phase approximation. Moreover, convective motions are taken into account within the mixing-length theory. As we vary the assumptions for computing neutrino-nucleon reaction …
Three-nucleon force effects in polarization transfers from the doubly spin-polarized initial neutron-deuteron state to the outgoing neutron in neutron-deuteron scattering
We report benchmark calculations of the energy per particle of pure neutron matter as a function of the baryon density using three independent many-body methods: Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone, Fermi hypernetted chain/single-operator chain, and auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo. Significant technical improvements are implemented in the latter two methods. The calculations are made for two distinct families of realistic coordinate-space nucleon-nucleon potentials fit to scattering data, including the standard Argonne $v_{18}$ interaction and two of its simplified versions, and four of the new No…
The properties of neutron star are studied in the framework of relativistic Hartree-Fock (RHF) model with realistic nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) interactions, i.e. Bonn potentials. The strong repulsion of $NN$ interaction at short range is properly removed by the unitary correlation operator method (UCOM). Meanwhile, the tensor correlation is neglected due to the very rich neutron environment in neutron star, where the total isospin of two nucleons can be approximately regarded as $T=1$. The equations of state of neutron star matter are calculated in $β$ equilibrium and charge neutrality conditions.…
We study the effects of free space nucleon radius on nuclear matter and neutron stars within the framework of quark mean field model. The nucleon radius is treated self-consistently with this model, where quark confinement is adjusted to fit different values of nucleon radius. Corrections due to center-of-mass motion, quark-pion coupling, and one gluon exchange are included to obtain the nucleon mass in vacuum. The meson coupling constants that describe the behavior of many-body nucleonic system are newly-constructed by reproducing the empirical saturation properties of nuclear matter, includi…
Recent observations of neutron-star properties, in particular the recent detection of gravitational waves emitted from binary neutron stars, GW 170817, open the way to put strong constraints on nuclear interactions. In this paper, we review the state of the art in calculating the equation of state of strongly interacting matter from first principle calculations starting from microscopic interactions among nucleons. We then review selected properties of neutron stars that can be directly compared with present and future observations.
We review the impact of nuclear forces on matter at neutron-rich extremes. Recent results have shown that neutron-rich nuclei become increasingly sensitive to three-nucleon forces, which are at the forefront of theoretical developments based on effective field theories of quantum chromodynamics. This includes the formation of shell structure, the spectroscopy of exotic nuclei, and the location of the neutron dripline. Nuclear forces also constrain the properties of neutron-rich matter, including the neutron skin, the symmetry energy, and the structure of neutron stars. We first review our unde…
We present calculations of the energy per particle of pure neutron and symmetric nuclear matter with simplified Argonne nucleon-nucleon potentials for different many-body theories. We compare critically the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock results to other formalisms, such as the Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone expansion up to third order, Self-Consistent Green's Functions, Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo, and Fermi Hyper Netted Chain. We evaluate the importance of spin-orbit and tensor correlations in the equation of state and find these to be important in a wide range of densities.
The energy of a free gas of neutrons and protons is well known to be approximately isospin parabolic with a negligibly small quartic term of only $0.45$ MeV at the saturation density of nuclear matter $ρ_0=0.16/\rm{fm}^3$. Using an isospin-dependent single-nucleon momentum distribution including a high (low) momentum tail (depletion) with its shape parameters constrained by recent high-energy electron scattering and medium-energy nuclear photodisintegration experiments as well as the state-of-the-art calculations of the deuteron wave function and the equation of state of pure neutron matter ne…
We employ two models of the nucleon-nucleon force: the OPE-Gaussian as well as the chiral N4LO and N4LO+ interactions with semilocal regularization in momentum space to study correlations among two-nucleon and three-nucleon elastic scattering observables. These models contain a number of free parameters whose values and covariance matrices are evaluated from a fit to the two-nucleon data. Such detailed knowledge of parameters allows us to create, using various sets of statistically generated parameters, numerous versions of these potentials and next apply them to two- and three-nucleon scatter…
The nuclear matter equation of state is relatively well constrained at sub-saturation densities thanks to the knowledge from nuclear physics. However, studying its behavior at supra-saturation densities is a challenging task. Fortunately, the extraordinary progress recently made in observations of neutron stars and neutron star mergers has provided us with unique opportunities to unfold the properties of dense matter. Under the assumption that nucleons are the only constituents of neutron star cores, we perform a Bayesian inference using the so-called meta-modeling technique with a nuclear-phy…
Background: Multi-nucleon transfer reactions have recently attracted attention as a possible path to the synthesis of new neutron-rich heavy nuclei. Purpose: We study transfer reactions involving massive nuclei with the intention of understanding if the semi-classical model GRAZING coupled to an evaporation and fission competition model can satisfactory reproduce experimental data on transfer reactions in which fission plays a role. Methods: We have taken the computer code GRAZING and have added fission competition to it (GRAZING-F) using our current understanding of $Γ_n/Γ_f$, fission barrier…
We employ interactions from chiral effective field theory and compute binding energies, excited states, and radii for isotopes of oxygen with the coupled-cluster method. Our calculation includes the effects of three-nucleon forces and of the particle continuum, both of which are important for the description of neutron-rich isotopes in the vicinity of the nucleus O-24. Our main results are the placement of the neutron drip-line at O-24, the assignment of spins, parities and resonance widths for several low-lying states of the drip-line nucleus, and an efficient approximation that incorporates …
We propose a phenomenological approach to examine the role of short- and long-range nucleon-nucleon correlations in the quenching of single-particle strength in atomic nuclei and their evolution in asymmetric nuclei and neutron matter. These correlations are thought to be the reason for the quenching of spectroscopic factors observed in $\rm (e,e'p)$, $\rm (p,2p)$ and transfer reactions. We show that the recently observed increase of the high-momentum component of the protons in neutron-rich nuclei is consistent with the reduced proton spectroscopic factors. Our approach connects recent result…

We investigate the parity-violating analyzing power in neutron capture on the proton at thermal energies in the framework of chiral effective field theory. By combining this analysis with a previous analysis of parity violation in proton-proton scattering, we are able to extract the size of the weak pion-nucleon coupling constant. The uncertainty is significant and dominated by the experimental error which is expected to be reduced soon.
The dependence between neutron-to-proton yield ratio ($R_{np}$) and neutron skin thickness ($δ_{np}$) in neutron-rich projectile induced reactions is investigated within the framework of the Isospin-Dependent Quantum Molecular Dynamics (IQMD) model. The density distribution of the Droplet model is embedded in the initialization of the neutron and proton densities in the present IQMD model. By adjusting the diffuseness parameter of neutron density in the Droplet model for the projectile, the relationship between the neutron skin thickness and the corresponding $R_{np}$ in the collisions is obta…
In this talk, we first briefly review the isospin dependence of the total nucleon effective mass $M^{\ast}_{J}$ inferred from analyzing nucleon-nucleus scattering data within an isospin dependent non-relativistic optical potential model, and the isospin dependence of the nucleon E-mass $M^{\ast,\rm{E}}_{J}$ obtained from applying the Migdal-Luttinger theorem to a phenomenological single-nucleon momentum distribution in nuclei constrained by recent electron-nucleus scattering experiments. Combining information about the isospin dependence of both the nucleon total effective mass and E-mass, we …
We consider transport properties of the hypernuclear matter in neutron star cores. In particular, we calculate the thermal conductivity, the shear viscosity, and the momentum transfer rates for np$Σ^{-}Λeμ$ composition of dense matter in $β$--equilibrium for baryon number densities in the range $0.1-1$~fm$^{-3}$. The calculations are based on baryon interactions treated within the framework of the non-relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory. Bare nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions are described by the Argonne v18 phenomenological potential supplemented with the Urbana IX three-nucleon force.…
We outline two important effects that are missing from most evaluations of the dark matter capture rate in neutron stars. As dark matter scattering with nucleons in the star involves large momentum transfer, nucleon structure must be taken into account via a momentum dependence of the hadronic form factors. In addition, due to the high density of neutron star matter, we should account for nucleon interactions rather than modeling the nucleons as an ideal Fermi gas. Properly incorporating these effects is found to suppress the dark matter capture rate by up to four orders of magnitude for the h…
Investigations of thermal evolution of neutron stars with hyperon cores require neutrino emissivities for many neutrino reactions involving strongly degenerate particles (nucleons, hyperons, electrons, muons). We calculate the angular integrals $I_n$ (over orientations of momenta of $n$ degenerate particles) for major neutrino reactions with $n$ =3, 4, 5 at all possible combinations of particle Fermi momenta. The integrals $I_n$ are necessary ingredients for constructing a uniform database of neutrino emissivities in dense nucleon-hyperon matter. The results can also be used in many problems o…
Proton-neutron, neutron-neutron and proton-proton momentum correlation functions ($C_{pn}$, $C_{nn}$, $C_{pp}$) are systematically investigated for $^{15}$C and other C isotopes induced collisions at different entrance channel conditions within the framework of the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IDQMD) model complemented by the CRAB (correlation after burner) computation code. $^{15}$C is a prime exotic nucleus candidate due to the weakly bound valence neutron coupling with closed-neutron shell nucleus $^{14}$C. In order to study density dependence of correlation function by rem…
In order to reveal the difference between the latest neutron star observation experiment GW170817 and the existing theory, we mainly consider the effect of the nucleon radius on the neutron star from the existing theory. We believe that the effect of nucleon radius in neutron star is not negligible, and the mass radius of nucleon should be used instead of the charge radius. The nucleon mass radius is set as $r_m = 0.55\pm0.09$ fm from the new measurements. It is considered as an input to the "Excluded Volume Effects" model in the equation of state of nuclear matter. We propose a novel neutron …
It is shown that experimental values of the cross sections of inelastic low-energy neutron scattering on even-even nuclei together with the description of these cross sections in the framework of the coupled channel optical model may be considered as a reliable method for finding nuclei with a semimagic number (or numbers) of nucleons. Some examples of the application of this method are considered.
Within a transport model, we study the neutron-proton differential transverse flow and its excitation function in central $^{132}$Sn + $^{124}$Sn collisions at 270 MeV/nucleon. To more accurately evaluate effects of the high-density behavior of symmetry energy \esym on this observable, we also consider the uncertainties of \esym around the saturation density $ρ_{0}$. It is shown that the neutron-proton differential transverse flow and its excitation function are mainly sensitive to the slope $L$ of \esym at $ρ_{0}$. However, the effects of low-density behavior of \esym on this observable shoul…
Energies of symmetric nuclear matter and neutron matter are evaluated in the lowest order Bruekner theory using the Ch-EFT potential including effects of the three-nucleon force (3NF). The 3NF is first reduced to density-dependent nucleon-nucleon (NN) force by folding single-nucleon degrees of freedom in infinite matter. Adding the reduced NN force to the initial NN force and applying a partial-wave expansion, we perform $G$-matrix calculations in pure neutron matter as well as in symmetric nuclear. We obtain the saturation curve which is close to the empirical one. It is explicitly shown that…
Neutron matter is an ideal laboratory for nuclear interactions derived from chiral effective field theory since all contributions are predicted up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) in the chiral expansion. By making use of recent advances in the partial-wave decomposition of three- nucleon (3N) forces, we include for the first time N$^3$LO 3N interactions in many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) up to third order and in self-consistent Green's function theory (SCGF). Using these two complementary many-body frameworks we provide improved predictions for the equation of state of …
