The nuclear matter equation of state is relatively well constrained at sub-saturation densities thanks to the knowledge from nuclear physics. However, studying its behavior at supra-saturation densities is a challenging task. Fortunately, the extraordinary progress recently made in observations of neutron stars and neutron star mergers has provided us with unique opportunities to unfold the properties of dense matter. Under the assumption that nucleons are the only constituents of neutron star cores, we perform a Bayesian inference using the so-called meta-modeling technique with a nuclear-physics-informed prior. The latest information from the GW170817 event by the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration (LVC) and from the radius measurement of the heaviest known neutron star PSR J0740+6620 by the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) telescope and X-ray Multi-Mirror (XMM-Newton) are taken into account as likelihoods in the analysis. The impacts of different constraints on the equation of state as well as on the predictions of neutron star properties are discussed. The obtained posterior reveals that all the current observations are fully compatible with the nucleonic hypothesis. Strong disagreements between our results with future data can be identified as a signal for the existence of exotic degrees of freedom.
We examine the possibility that the light companion in the highly asymmetric binary compact object coalescence event GW190814 is a hypernuclear star. We use density functional theory with functionals that have been tuned to the properties of $Λ$ hypernuclei as well as astrophysical constraints placed by the masses of the most massive millisecond pulsars, the mass-radius range inferred from the NICER experiment, and the binary neutron star merger event GW170817. We compute general-relativistic static and maximally rotating Keplerian configurations of purely nucleonic and hypernuclear stars. We …

The possibility of existence of hyperons in the recently measured $2M_\odot$ pulsar PSRJ1614-2230 is explored using a diverse set of nuclear equations of state calculated within the relativistic mean-field models. Our results indicate that the nuclear equations of state compatible with heavy-ion data allow the hyperons to exist in the PSRJ1614-2230 only for significantly larger values for the meson-hyperon coupling strengths. The maximum mass configurations for these cases contain sizable hyperon fractions ($\sim 60%$) and yet masquared their counterpart composed of only nucleonic matter.
A Bayesian analysis of the possible behaviors of the dense matter equation of state informed through recent LIGO-Virgo as well as NICER measurements reveals that all the present observations are compatible with a fully nucleonic hypothesis for the composition of dense matter, even in the core of the most massive pulsar PSR J0740+6620. Under the hypothesis of a nucleonic composition, we extract the most general behavior of the energy per particle of symmetric matter and density dependence of the symmetry energy, compatible with the astrophysical observations as well as our present knowledge of …
We explore the implications of the recent radius determination of PSR J0740+6620 by the NICER experiment combined with the neutron skin measurement by the PREX-II experiment and the associated inference of the slope of symmetry energy, for the structure of hybrid stars with a strong first-order phase transition from nucleonic to quark matter. We combine a covariant density-functional nucleonic equation of state (EOS) with a constant-speed-of-sound EOS for quark matter. We show that the radius and tidal deformability ranges obtained from GW170817 can be reconciled with the implication of the PR…
The recent precise measurement of the mass of pulsar PSR J1614$-$2230, as well as observational indications of even more massive neutron stars, has revived the question of the composition of matter at the high densities prevailing inside neutron-star cores. We study the impact on the maximum possible neutron-star mass of an "exotic" core consisting of non-nucleonic matter. For this purpose, we study the occurrence of a first-order phase transition in nucleonic matter. Given the current lack of knowledge of non-nucleonic matter, we consider the stiffest possible equation of state subject only t…
We confront admixture of dark matter inside neutron star using gravitational wave constraints coming from binary neutron star merger. We consider a relativistic mean field model including $σ-ω-ρ$ meson interaction with NL3 parameterization. We study fermionic dark matter interacting with nucleonic matter via Higgs portal mechanism. We show that admixture of dark matter inside the neutron star soften the equation state and lower the value of tidal deformability. Gravitational wave GW170817 observation puts an upper bound on tidal deformability of a binary neutron star with low spin prior at 90\…
An ambitious goal of the astrophysical community is not only to constrain the equation of state (EOS) of neutron star (NS) matter by confronting it with astrophysics observations, but ultimately also to infer the NS composition. Nevertheless, the composition of the NS core is likely to remain uncertain unless we have an accurate determination of the nuclear symmetry energy at supra saturation density ($ρ>ρ_0$). We investigate how the nucleonic direct Urca (dUrca) processes can be used as an effective probe to constraint the high density nuclear symmetry energy. A large number of minimally cons…
The recent mass measurements of two binary millisecond pulsars, PSR J1614-2230 and PSR J0751+1807 with a mass M=1.97+/-0.04 Msun and M= 1.26 +/- 0.14 Msun, respectively, indicate a wide range of masses for such objects and possibly also a broad spectrum of masses of neutron stars born in core-collapse supernovae. Starting from the zero-age main sequence binary stage, we aim at inferring the birth masses of PSR J1614-2230 and PSR J0751+1807 by taking the differences in the evolutionary stages preceding their formation into account. Using simulations for the evolution of binary stars, we reconst…
We present a first step in developing a benchmark equation-of-state (EoS) model for multi-messenger astronomy that unifies the thermodynamics of quark and hadronic degrees of freedom. A Lagrangian approach to the thermodynamic potential of quark-meson-nucleon (QMN) matter was used. In this approach, dynamical chiral-symmetry breaking is described by the scalar mean-field dynamics coupled to quarks and nucleons and their chiral partners, whereby its restoration occurs in the hadronic phase by parity doubling, as well as in the quark phase. Quark confinement was achieved by an auxiliary scalar f…

The constituents of cold dense matter are still far from being understood. However, neutron star observations such as the recently observed pulsar PSR J1614-2230 with a mass of 1.97+/-0.04 M_solar help to considerably constrain the hadronic equation of state (EoS). We systematically investigate the influence of the hyperon potentials on the stiffness of the EoS. We find that they have but little influence on the maximum mass compared to the inclusion of an additional vector meson mediating repulsive interaction amongst hyperons. The new mass limit can only be reached with this additional meson…

A phase of strong interacting matter with deconfined quarks is expected in the core of massive neutron stars. In this article, we perform a study of the hadron-quark phase transition in cold (T = 0) neutron star matter and we calculate various structural properties of hybrid stars. For the quark phase, we make use of an equation of state (EOS) derived with the field correlator method (FCM) recently extended to the case of nonzero baryon density. For the hadronic phase, we consider both pure nucleonic and hyperonic matter, and we derive the corresponding EOS within a relativistic mean field app…
We adopt two- and three-body nuclear forces derived at the next-to-next-to-leading-order (N2LO) in the framework of effective chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) to calculate the equation of state (EOS) of $β$-stable neutron star matter using the Brueckner--Hartree--Fock many-body approach. We use the recent optimized chiral two-body nuclear interaction at N2LO derived by \cite{ekstrom1} and two different parametrizations of the three-body N2LO interaction: the first one is fixed to reproduce the saturation point of symmetric nuclear matter while the second one is fixed to reproduce the binding …
The recent NICER measurement of the radius of the neutron star PSR J0740+6620, and the inferred small variation of radii from 1.4$M_\odot$ to 2.1$M_\odot$, reveal key features of the equation of state of neutron star matter. The pressure rises rapidly in the regime of baryon density $n \sim$ 2-4 times nuclear saturation density, $n_0$ -- the region where we expect hadronic matter to be undergoing transformation into quark matter -- and the pressure in the nuclear regime is greater than predicted by microscopic many-body variational calculations of nuclear matter. To incorporate these insights …
The possible signatures of the presence of hyperons inside neutron stars are discussed within a Bayesian inference framework applied to a set of models based on a density-dependent relativistic mean-field description of hadronic matter. Nuclear matter properties, hypernuclei properties, and observational information are used to constrain the models. General properties of neutron stars such as the maximum mass, radius, tidal deformability, proton fraction, hyperon fraction, and speed of sound are discussed. It is shown that the two solar mass constraint imposes that neutron stars described by e…
Both fast and slow configurations of rotating neutron stars (NSs) are studied with the recently-constructed unified NS EoSs. The calculations for pure quark stars (QSs) and hybrid stars (HSs) are also done, using several updated quark matter EoSs and Gibbs construction for obtaining hadron-quark mixed phase. All three types of EoSs fulfill the recent 2-solar-mass constrain. By confronting the glitch observations with the theoretical calculations for the crustal moment of inertia (MoI), we find that the glitch crisis is still present in Vela-like pulsars. An upcoming accurate MoI measurement (e…
We investigate the possibility that GW170817 has not been the merger of two conventional neutron stars (NS) but involved at least one if not two hybrid stars with a quark matter core which might even belong to a third family of compact stars. To this end, we develop a Bayesian analysis method for selecting the most probable equation of state (EoS) under a set of constraints from compact star physics, which now also include the tidal deformability from GW170817 and the first result for the mass and radius determination for PSR J0030+0451 by NICER. We apply this method for the first time to a tw…
