We use holography to compute the large-$N$ effective field theory along the moduli space of vacua of an infinite class of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs admitting a dual M-theory description. We focus in particular on toric models and show how the spectrum of large $R$-charge SCFT chiral scalar operators corresponds to a set of explicit semiclassical solutions of our effective field theory, which describe bound states of backreacting giant gravitons and baryonic-like M5-branes. Our semiclassical description allows for a direct computation of the scaling dimensions of these operators and provides a starting point for a semiclassical investigation of the SCFT data in the large $R$-charge sector. We consider the models corresponding to the $Y^{12}(\mathbb{P}^2)$ and $Q^{111}$ Sasaki-Einstein spaces as explicit examples.
We study supersymmetric intersections of NS5-, D6- and D8-branes in type IIA string theory. We focus on the supergravity description of this system and identify a "near horizon" limit in which we recover the recently classified supersymmetric seven-dimensional AdS solutions of massive type IIA supergravity. Using a consistent truncation to seven-dimensional gauged supergravity we construct a universal supersymmetric deformation of these AdS vacua. In the holographic dual six-dimensional (1,0) superconformal field theory this deformation describes a universal RG flow on the tensor branch of the…
Using six-dimensional Euclidean $F(4)$ gauged supergravity we construct a holographic renormalization group flow for a CFT on $S^5$. Numerical solutions to the BPS equations are obtained and the free energy of the theory on $S^5$ is determined holographically by calculation of the renormalized on-shell supergravity action. In the process, we deal with subtle issues such as holographic renormalization and addition of finite counterterms. We then propose a candidate field theory dual to these solutions. This tentative dual is a supersymmetry-preserving deformation of the strongly-coupled non-Lag…
We show that the non-gravitational sectors of certain 6d and 5d supergravity theories can be decomposed into superconformal field theories (SCFTs) which are coupled together by pairwise identifying and gauging mutual global symmetries. In the case of 6d supergravity, we consider F-theory on compact elliptic Calabi-Yau 3-folds with base $B=T^4/\mathbb{Z}_n\times \mathbb{Z}_m$ and we show in many examples that the non-gravitational field theory sectors can be described as configurations of coupled 6d $(1,0)$ SCFTs. We also conjecture that the effective 2d $(0,4)$ SCFTs living on the self-dual st…
We construct gravitational solutions that holographically describe two different $d=4$ SCFTs joined together at a co-dimension one, planar RG interface and preserving $d=3$ superconformal symmetry. The RG interface joins $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory on one side with the $\mathcal{N}=1$ Leigh-Strassler SCFT on the other. We construct a family of such solutions, which in general are associated with spatially dependent mass deformations on the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM side, but there is a particular solution for which these deformations vanish. We also construct a Janus solution with the Leigh-Strassler…
Operators transform anomalously under the symmetry in the presence of quantum anomalies. We study this aspect of the super-Weyl anomaly in $\mathcal N=(1,1)$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs), in the context of AdS/CFT. In particular, we carry out holographic renormalization for $(1,1)$ pure AdS$_3$ supergravity that is supposed to be a gravity dual of the $\mathcal N=(1,1)$ SCFT, and derive holographic superconformal Ward identities with corresponding anomalies. We show that the obtained super-Weyl anomaly of the $\mathcal N=(1,1)$ SCFT induces a quantum correction term in the transformat…
Half-maximal gauged supergravity in seven dimensions coupled to $n$ vector multiplets contains $n+3$ vectors and $3n+1$ scalars parametrized by $\mathbb{R}^+\times SO(3,n)/SO(3)\times SO(n)$ coset manifold. The two-form field in the gravity multiplet can be dualized to a three-form field which admits a topological mass term. Possible non-compact gauge groups take the form of $G_0\times H\subset SO(3,n)$ with a compact group $H$. $G_0$ is one of the five possibilities; $SO(3,1)$, $SL(3,\mathbb{R})$, $SO(2,2)$, $SO(2,1)$ and $SO(2,2)\times SO(2,1)$. We investigate all of these possible non-compa…
We use holography to study codimension-2 surface defects in 5d SCFTs engineered by $(p,q)$ 5-brane webs. The three-dimensional defects are realized by D3-branes ending on the brane web. We identify the holographic representation of the defects in Type IIB $AdS_6$ solutions as probe D3-branes, and study conformal and non-conformal defects which, respectively, preserve one half and one quarter of the supersymmetry. For a sample of 5d SCFTs, including the $T_N$ theories, we provide explicit solutions for conformal and non-conformal defects. For the conformal defects we obtain their contribution t…
We study the recently proposed AdS$_7$/CFT$_6$ dualities for a class of 6d $\mathcal{N} = (1,0)$ theories that flow on the tensor branch to long linear quiver gauge theories. We find a precise agreement in the symmetries and in the spectrum of charged states between the 6d SCFTs and their conjectured AdS$_7$ duals. We also confirm a recent conjecture that a discrete $S_N$ symmetry relating the baryons in the quiver theories is in fact gauged.
We probe type IIA geometries with \emph{folded} semiclassical strings those encode the strong coupling dynamics associated with long operators in a class of SCFTs pertaining to spacetimes whose dimension vary from $6d$ down to $2d$. We particularly focus on folded string configurations those are extended through stack of flavor $ Dp $ ($ p=6,8 $) branes localized along the internal manifold. Considering some specific examples within the realm of $ \mathcal{N}=2 $ linear quivers, we show that the associated string spectrum exhibits a pole as the string approaches flavor D6 branes. We identify t…
We study four-derivative corrections to four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ minimal gauged supergravity and show that they are controlled by two real constants. The solutions of the equations of motion in the two-derivative theory are not modified by the higher-derivative corrections. We use this to derive a general formula for the regularized on-shell action for any asymptotically locally AdS$_4$ solution of the theory and show how the higher-derivative corrections affect black hole thermodynamic quantities in a universal way. We employ our results in the context of holography to derive explicit…
We present new families of $AdS_5$ solutions in M-theory preserving 4d ${\mathcal N = 2}$ supersymmetry. We perform a systematic analysis of holographic observables for these solutions, providing evidence for an interpretation in terms of 4d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) of Argyres-Douglas type, realized in class $\mathcal S$ via a sphere with one irregular, and one regular puncture. The gravity solutions exhibit internal M5-brane sources that correspond to the irregular puncture. For a family of solutions, we identify explicitly the class $\mathcal S$ puncture data and perform a detai…
Field theories on anti-de Sitter (AdS) space can be studied by realizing them as low-energy limits of AdS vacua of string/M theory. In an appropriate limit, the field theories decouple from the rest of string/M theory. Since these vacua are dual to conformal field theories (CFTs), this relates some of the observables of these field theories on AdS to a subsector of the dual CFTs. We exemplify this `rigid holography' by studying in detail the 6d N=(2,0) A_{K-1} superconformal field theory (SCFT) on AdS_5xS^1, with equal radii for AdS_5 and for S^1. We choose specific boundary conditions preserv…
We construct a four supercharges Liouville superconformal field theory in four dimensions. The Liouville superfield is chiral and its lowest component is a log-correlated complex scalar whose real part carries a background charge. The action consists of a supersymmetric Paneitz operator, a background supersymmetric $\mathcal{Q}$-curvature charge and an exponential potential. It localizes semiclassically on solutions that describe curved superspaces with a constant complex supersymmetric $\mathcal{Q}$-curvature. The theory is non-unitary with a continuous spectrum of scaling dimensions. We stud…
We construct a Liouville superconformal field theory with eight real supercharges in four dimensions. The Liouville superfield is an $\mathcal{N}=2$ chiral superfield with sixteen bosonic and sixteen fermionic component fields. Its lowest component is a log-correlated complex scalar field whose real part carries a background charge. The theory is non-unitary with a continuous spectrum of scaling dimensions. We study its quantum dynamics on the supersymmetric 4-sphere and show that the classical background charge is not corrected quantum mechanically. We calculate the super-Weyl anomaly coeffic…
We consider the holographic principle, in its lightsheet formulation, in the semiclassical context of statistical-mechanical systems in classical Einstein spacetimes. A local condition, in terms of entropy and energy local densities of the material medium under consideration, is discussed, which turns out to be necessary and sufficient for the validity of the closely-related generalized covariant entropy bound. This condition is apparently a general consequence or expression of flat-spacetime quantum mechanics alone, without any reference to gravity. Using it, a lower bound η/s >= 1/4πcan be d…
We use conformal supergravity techniques to study four-derivative corrections in four-dimensional gauged supergravity. We show that the four-derivative Lagrangian for the propagating degrees of freedom of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ gravity multiplet is determined by two real dimensionless constants. We demonstrate that all solutions of the two-derivative equations of motion in the supergravity theory also solve the four-derivative equations of motion. These results are then applied to explicitly calculate the regularized on-shell action for any asymptotically locally AdS$_4$ solution of the two-deriv…
We study a supersymmetric, rotating, electrically charged black hole in AdS$_{4}$ which is a solution of four-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity. Using holography we show that the free energy on $S^3$ and the superconformal index of the dual three-dimensional $\mathcal N=2$ SCFT, in the planar limit, are related in a simple universal way. This result applies to large classes of SCFTs constructed from branes in string and M-theory which we discuss in some detail. For theories of class $\mathcal R$, which arise from $N$ M5-branes wrapped on hyperbolic three-manifolds, we show that the super…
Motivated by the quest for black holes in AdS braneworlds, and in particular by the holographic conjecture relating 5D classical bulk solutions with 4D quantum corrected ones, we numerically solve the semiclassical Einstein equations (backreaction equations) with matter fields in the (zero temperature) Boulware vacuum state. In the absence of an exact analytical expression for <T_(mu nu)> in four dimensions we work within the s-wave approximation. Our results show that the quantum corrected solution is very similar to Schwarzschild till very close to the horizon, but then a bouncing surface fo…
I generalize classical gravity/quantum gauge theory duality in AdS/CFT correspondence to (1+1)-dimensional non-relativistic quantum mechanical system. It is shown that (1+1)-dimensional non-relativistic quantum mechanical system can be reproduced from holographic projection of (2+1)-dimension classical gravity at semiclassical limit. In this explanation every quantum path in 2-dimension corresponds to a classical path of 3-dimension gravity under definite holographic projection. I consider free particle and harmonic oscillator as two examples and find their dual gravity description.
We generalize the $T\overline{T}$ deformation of CFT$_2$ to higher-dimensional large-$N$ CFTs, and show that in holographic theories, the resulting effective field theory matches semiclassical gravity in AdS with a finite radial cutoff. We also derive the deformation dual to arbitrary bulk matter theories. Generally, the deformations involve background fields as well as CFT operators. By keeping track of these background fields along the flow, we demonstrate how to match correlation functions on the two sides in some simple examples, as well as other observables.
In conformal field theories (CFTs) of dimension $d>3$, two-dimensional (2d) conformal defects are characterised in part by central charges defined via the defect's contribution to the trace anomaly. However, in general for interacting CFTs these central charges are difficult to calculate. For superconformal 2d defects in supersymmetric (SUSY) CFTs (SCFTs), we show how to compute these defect central charges from the SUSY partition function either on $S^d$ with defect along $S^2$, or on $S^1 \times S^{d-1}$ with defect along $S^1 \times S^1$. In the latter case we propose that defect central ch…
M-theory and string theory predict the existence of many six-dimensional SCFTs. In particular, type IIA brane constructions involving NS5-, D6- and D8-branes conjecturally give rise to a very large class of N=(1,0) CFTs in six dimensions. We point out that these theories sit at the end of RG flows which start from six-dimensional theories which admit an M-theory construction as a M5 stack transverse to $R^4/Z_k \times R$. The flows are triggered by Higgs branch expectation values and correspond to D6's opening up into transverse D8-branes via a Nahm pole. We find a precise correspondence betwe…
It is technically difficult (if not impossible) to write down and solve self-consistently the semiclassical Einstein equations in the case of evaporating black holes. These difficulties can in principle be overcome in an apparently very different context, the Randall-Sundrum braneworld models in Anti-de Sitter space. Use of Maldacena's AdS/CFT correspondence led us to formulate a holographic conjecture for black holes localised on a brane, for which 4D quantum corrected black holes are dual to classical 5D black holes. This duality is applied to the computation of the correction to the newtoni…
We study the correlators of the 2d W_N minimal model in the semiclassical regime with large central charge from bulk viewpoint by utilizing open Wilson lines in sl(N) Chern-Simons gauge theory. We extend previous works for the tree level of bulk theory to incorporate loop corrections in this paper. We offer a way to regularize divergences associated with loop diagrams such that three point functions with two scalars and a higher spin current agree with the values fixed by the boundary W_N symmetry. With the prescription, we reproduce the conformal weight of the operator corresponding to a bulk…
We propose a non-unitary example of holography for the family of two-dimensional logarithmic conformal field theories with negative central charge $c= c_{p,1} = - 6p +13 - 6 p^{-1}$. We argue that at large $p$, these models have a semiclassical gravity-like description which contains, besides the global AdS$_3$ spacetime, a tower of solitonic solutions describing conical excess angles. Evidence comes from the fact that the central charge and the natural modular invariant partition function of such a theory coincide with those of the $c_{p,1}$ model. These theories have an extended chiral W-alg…
We formulate a version of the information paradox in de Sitter spacetime and show that it is solved by the emergence of entanglement islands in the context of the DS/dS correspondence; in particular, the entanglement entropy of a subregion obeys a time-dependent Page curve. Our construction works in general spacetime dimensions and keeps the graviton massless. We interpret the resulting behavior of the entanglement entropy using double holography. It suggests that the spatial distribution of microscopic degrees of freedom depends on descriptions, as in the case of a black hole. In the static (…
We consider extremal and non-extremal three-point functions of two giant gravitons and one point-like graviton using Schur polynomials in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and holographically, using a semiclassical Born-Infeld analysis as well as bubbling geometries. For non-extremal three-point functions our computations using all three approaches are in perfect agreement. For extremal correlators we find that our results from the bubbling geometry analysis agree with existing results from the gauge theory. The semiclassical Born-Infeld computation for the extremal case is known to give a different…
We study the effective superpotential of N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories with a mass gap, whose analytic properties are encoded in an algebraic curve. We propose that the degree of the curve equals the number of semiclassical branches of the gauge theory. This is true for supersymmetric QCD with one adjoint and polynomial superpotential, where the two sheets of its hyperelliptic curve correspond to the gauge theory pseudoconfining and higgs branches. We verify this proposal in the new case of supersymmetric QCD with two adjoints and superpotential V(X)+XY^2, which is the confining phase defo…
We solve semiclassical Einstein equations in two dimensions with a massive source and we find a static, thermodynamically stable, quantum black hole solution in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum state. We then study the black hole geometry generated by a boundary mass sitting on a non-zero tension 1-brane embedded in a three-dimensional BTZ black hole. We show that the two geometries coincide and we extract, using holographic relations, information about the CFT living on the 1-brane. Finally, we show that the quantum black hole has the same temperature of the bulk BTZ, as expected from the holographi…
We treat free large N superconformal field theories as holographic duals of higher spin (HS) gauge theories expanded around AdS spacetime with radius R. The HS gauge theories contain massless and light massive AdS fields. The HS current correlators are written in a crossing symmetric form including only exchange of other HS currents. This and other arguments point to the existence of a consistent truncation to massless HS fields. A survey of massless HS theories with 32 supersymmetries in D=4,5,7 (where the 7D results are new) is given and the corresponding composite operators are discussed. I…
We evaluate the partition function of the free and interacting O(N) vector model on a two-parameter family of squashed three spheres in the presence of a scalar deformation. We also find everywhere regular solutions of Einstein gravity coupled to a scalar field in AdS and in dS with the same double squashed boundary geometry. Remarkably, the thermodynamic properties of the AdS solutions qualitatively agree with the behavior predicted by the free O(N) model with a real mass deformation. The dS bulk solutions specify the semiclassical `no-boundary' measure over anisotropic deformations of inflat…
We investigate a new approach to holography in asymptotically AdS spacetimes, in which time rather than space is the emergent dimension. By making a sufficiently large T^2-deformation of a Euclidean CFT, we define a holographic theory that lives on Cauchy slices of the Lorentzian bulk. (More generally, for an arbitrary Hamiltonian constraint equation that closes, we show how to obtain it by an irrelevant deformation from a CFT with suitable anomalies.) The partition function of this theory defines a natural map between the bulk canonical quantum gravity theory Hilbert space, and the Hilbert sp…
The correspondence between theories in anti-de Sitter space and conformal field theories in physical space-time leads to an analytic, semiclassical model for strongly-coupled QCD. Light-front holography allows hadronic amplitudes in the AdS fifth dimension to be mapped to frame-independent light-front wavefunctions of hadrons in physical space-time, thus providing a relativistic description of hadrons at the amplitude level. We identify the AdS coordinate $z$ with an invariant light-front coordinate $ζ$ which separates the dynamics of quark and gluon binding from the kinematics of constituent …
Holography has provided valuable insights into the time evolution of strongly coupled gauge theories in a fixed spacetime. However, this framework is insufficient if this spacetime is dynamical. We present a scheme to evolve a four-dimensional, strongly interacting gauge theory coupled to four-dimensional dynamical gravity in the semiclassical regime. As in previous work, we use holography to evolve the quantum gauge theory stress tensor, whereas the four-dimensional metric evolves according to Einstein's equations coupled to the expectation value of the stress tensor. The novelty of our appro…
Light-Front Holography leads to a rigorous connection between hadronic amplitudes in a higher dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) space and frame-independent light-front wavefunctions of hadrons in 3+1 physical space-time, thus providing a compelling physical interpretation of the AdS/CFT correspondence principle and AdS/QCD, a useful framework which describes the correspondence between theories in a modified AdS$_5$ background and confining field theories in physical space-time. To a first semiclassical approximation, where quantum loops and quark masses are not included, this approach leads to …
