We report the occurrence of the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) in polycrystalline perovskite La0.5Ca0.5CoO3. The sample is ferromagnetic below TC = 147 K and resistivity shows non-metallic behavior above and below the TC with only a small negative magnetoresistance (~2%) around TC. Field dependence of magnetization at 10 K shows large hysteresis with a coercive field of 6 kOe but a small magnetization ~ 0.64 Bohr magneton/Co even in a field of 50 kOe, which indicates the presence of magnetically heterogeneous ground state consisting of ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic phases. The field dependence of the Nernst thermopower (Sxy) at low temperatures shows complete saturation but the magnetization does not. This indicates that the ANE in La0.5Ca0.5CoO3 depends only on the transport properties of the ferromagnetic phase, while it is not affected by the non-ferromagnetic phase. Due to the higher value of remnant Sxy, the magnetized polycrystalline sample exhibits ANE in absence of an external magnetic field.

A novel process of spin conversion from a temperature gradient to a transverse voltage is addressed in this paper, viz. the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) in a ferromagnetic metal. We report that an additional voltage is superposed on the conventional anomalous Nernst voltage in FePt crystalline thin films. The dynamics of the local magnetization is modulated by the heat current and excites spin waves. These generate a conduction electron spin current via s-d coupling, which flows along the temperature gradient, and the spin current is converted to a Nernst voltage by the inverse spin Hall effe…
We report the planar and anomalous Nernst effect in epitaxial thin films of spin polarized La2/3Sr1/3MnO3. The thermal counterpart of the anomalous Hall effect in this material (i.e. the anomalous Nernst effect) shows a extreme sensitivity to any parasitic thermal gradient, resulting in large asymmetric voltages under small temperature differences. This should be considered when interpreting the magnitude of the electrical response in nanostructures and devices that operate under high current densities. Finally, none of the observed magneto-thermoelectric signals is compatible with the observa…
Antiferromagnets with tunable phase transitions are promising for future spintronics applications. We investigated spin-dependent transport properties of FeRh thin films, which show a temperature driven antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition. Epitaxial FeRh films grown on MgO (001) substrates exhibit a clear magnetic and electronic phase transition. By performing anomalous Hall and anomalous Nernst effect measurements over a wide range of temperatures, we demonstrate that the thermally driven transition shows distinctly different transverse transport on both side of the phase tran…
In this study, we implemented a finite-difference algorithm for computing anomalous Hall and Nernst conductivity. Based on the expression to evaluate the Berry curvature in an insulating system [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 74 1674(2005)], we extended the methods to a metallic system. We calculated anomalous Hall conductivity and Nernst conductivity in a two-dimensional ferromagnetic material FeCl$_2$ and three-dimensional ferromagnetic transition metals bcc-Fe, hcp-Co, and fcc-Ni. Our results are comparable to previously reported results computed by Kubo-formula or Wannier representation. To evaluate a…
The anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) and anomalous Nernst conductivity (ANC) are two prominent transport phenomena in ferromagnetic materials of a topological nature. Based on first-principles calculations, we evaluated the AHC and ANC of 35 cubic ferromagnetic antiperovskites (APVs) and observed giant AHC and ANC as large as 1128 S/cm and 6.27 AK-1m-1 for Co3LiN and Co3PtN, respectively. Detailed analysis reveals that the origin of giant ANC can be attributed to the occurrence of Weyl nodes near the Fermi energy, as demonstrated for Co3PtN. Interestingly, both the magnitude and sign of AHC a…
The anomalous Nernst effect of thin bilayers comprising a thin normal metal film and a ferromagnetic Mn$_5$Ge$_3$C$_{0.8}$ film has been investigated. Epitaxial c-axis grown Mn$_5$Ge$_3$C$_{0.8}$ films have been obtained by e-beam evaporation as well as by magnetron sputtering on Ge(111) substrates. The size of the anomalous Nernst coefficient is independent of the growth method. Pt, Ta, and Pt/Cu bilayers have been used as voltage leads on top of the ferromagnetic film. We show that the interface between the normal metal electrode and the ferromagnetic film contributes significantly to the an…
Based on first-principles calculations, the anomalous Hall (AHC) and anomalous Nernst conductivities (ANC) of the XMnP (X=Ti, Zr, Hf) compounds were evaluated, and the possibility to tailor such properties by changing the magnetization directions was also investigated. We observed that nodal lines and small gap areas consist the dominant contributions to AHC and ANC, where the significant variations in AHC and ANC when altering the magnetization direction originate from the whole Brillouin zone. Our studies gave a promising clue on engineering magnetic intermetallic compounds for tunable trans…
Based on high-throughput first-principles calculations, we evaluated the anomalous Hall and anomalous Nernst conductivities of 266 transition-metal-based ferromagnetic compounds. Detailed analysis based on the symmetries and Berry curvatures reveals that the origin of singular-like behaviour of anomalous Hall/Nernst conductivities can be mostly attributed to the appearance of Weyl nodes or nodal lines located in the proximity of the Fermi energy, which can be further tailored by external stimuli such as biaxial strains and magnetic fields. Moreover, such calculations are enabled by the automat…
Noncollinear antiferromagnets have recently been attracting considerable interest partly due to recent surprising discoveries of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in them and partly because they have promising applications in antiferromagnetic spintronics. Here we study the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), a phenomenon having the same origin as the AHE, and also the spin Nernst effect (SNE) as well as AHE and the spin Hall effect (SHE) in noncollinear antiferromagnetic Mn$_3X$ ($X$ = Sn, Ge, Ga) within the Berry phase formalism based on {\it ab initio} relativistic band structure calculations. For…
Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) in a variety of ferromagnetic metals including pure metals, oxides, and chalcogenides, are studied to obtain unified understandings of their origins. We show a universal scaling behavior of anomalous Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ as a function of longitudinal conductivity $σ_{xx}$ over five orders of magnitude, which is well explained by a recent theory of the AHE taking into account both the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions. ANE is closely related with AHE and provides us with further information about the low-temperature electro…
The interplay of magnetism and topology opens up the possibility for exotic linear response effects, such as the anomalous Hall effect and the anomalous Nernst effect, which can be strongly enhanced by designing a strong Berry curvature in the electronic structure. It is even possible to utilize this to create a quantum anomalous Hall state at high temperatures by reducing the dimensionality. Magnetic Heusler compounds are a promising class of materials for this purpose because they grow in thin films, have a high Curie temperature, and their electronic structure hosts strong topological featu…
Intrinsic anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), like its Hall counterpart, is generated by Berry curvature of electrons in solids. Little is known about its response to disorder. In contrast, the link between the amplitude of the ordinary Nernst coefficient and the mean-free-path is extensively documented. Here, by studying Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, a topological half-metallic semimetal hosting sizable and recognizable ordinary and anomalous Nernst responses, we demonstrate an anti-correlation between the amplitude of ANE and carrier mobility. We argue that the observation, paradoxically, establishes the in…
We predict a large anomalous Nernst effect in the inverse Heusler compensated ferrimagnets Ti$_2$Mn$X$ ($X$=Al,Ga,In) with vanishing net magnetic moments. Though the net magnetic moment is zero, the Weyl points in these systems lead to a large anomalous Nernst conductivity (ANC) due to the lack of a magnetic sublattice that inverses the sign of the Berry curvature. In comparison to the noncollinear antiferromagnets Mn$_3$Sn and Mn$_3$Ge, the high ANC stems almost entirely from the Weyl points in this class of compounds, and thus, it is topologically protected. This work shows for the first tim…
The anomalous Nernst effect in nanostructured magnetic materials is a key phenomenon to optimally control and employ the internal energy dissipated in electronic devices, being dependent on for instance the magnetic anisotropy of the active element. Thereby, here we report a theoretical and experimental investigation of the magnetic properties and anomalous Nernst effect in a flexible magnetostrictive film with induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and under external stress. Specifically, we calculate the magnetization behavior and the thermoelectric voltage response from a theoretical approach…
Applying a temperature gradient in a magnetic material generates a voltage that is perpendicular to both the heat flow and the magnetization. This is the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) which was thought to be proportional to the value of the magnetization for a long time. However, more generally, the ANE has been predicted to originate from a net Berry curvature of all bands near the Fermi level. Subsequently, a large anomalous Nernst thermopower has recently been observed in topological materials with no net magnetization but large net Berry curvature around E$_F$. These experiments clearly fa…
The anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) is a member of the extensive family of topological effects in solid state physics. It converts a heat current into electric voltage and originates from the Berry curvature of electronic bands near the Fermi level. Recent results established the Fe$_3$Ga alloy as one of the most promising candidates for applications, due to its flat band structure consisting of rich web of nodal lines. In this theoretical work, we study the effect of deformation of Fe$_3$Ga on the anomalous Nernst effect, which naturally occurs in thin films. Furthermore, we demonstrate that do…
We performed a numerical analysis of the material parameters required for realizing a heat flux sensor exploiting the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE). The results showed the importance of high thermopower of ANE ($S_{\text{ANE}}$) and small saturation magnetization. This motivated us to investigate the effect of Al substitution of Fe on ANE and found $S_{\text{ANE}} =$ 3.4 $μ$V/K in Fe$_{81}$Al$_{19}$ because of the dominant intrinsic mechanism. Using this material, we made a prototype ANE-based heat flux sensor on a thin flexible polyimide sheet and demonstrated accurate sensing with it. This s…
We study the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) and anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in proximity-induced ferromagnetic palladium and platinum which is widely used in spintronics, within the Berry phase formalism based on the relativistic band structure calculations. We find that both the anomalous Hall ($σ_{xy}^A$) and Nernst ($α_{xy}^A$) conductivities can be related to the spin Hall conductivity ($σ_{xy}^S$) and band exchange-splitting ($Δ_{ex}$) by relations $σ_{xy}^A =Δ_{ex}\frac{e}{\hbar}σ_{xy}^S(E_F)'$ and $α_{xy}^A = -\frac{π^2}{3}\frac{k_B^2TΔ_{ex}}{\hbar}σ_{xy}^s(μ)"$, respectively. In particu…
Weyl semimetals are characterized by the presence of massless band dispersion in momentum space. When a Weyl semimetal meets magnetism, large anomalous transport properties emerge as a consequence of its topological nature. Here, using $in-situ$ spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy combined with $ab\ initio$ calculations, we visualize the spin-polarized Weyl cone and flat-band surface states of ferromagnetic Co$_2$MnGa films with full remanent magnetization. We demonstrate that the anomalous Hall and Nernst conductivities systematically grow when the magnetization-induced massiv…
Synthesis of crystallographically well-defined thin films of topological materials is important for unraveling their mesoscale quantum properties and for device applications. Mn$_3$Ge, an antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal with a chiral magnetic structure on a Kagome lattice, is expected to have enhanced Berry curvature around Weyl nodes near the Fermi energy, leading to large anomalous Hall / Nernst effects and a large spin-Hall effect. Using magnetron sputtering, we have grown epitaxial thin films of hexagonal D0$_{19}$ Mn$_3$Ge that are flat and continuous. Large anomalous Nernst and inverse …
In ferromagnetic solids, even in absence of magnetic field, a transverse voltage can be generated by a longitudinal temperature gradient. This thermoelectric counterpart of the Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is dubbed the Anomalous Nernst effect (ANE). Expected to scale with spontaneous magnetization, both these effects arise because of the Berry curvature at the Fermi energy. Here, we report the observation of a giant ANE in a newly-discovered magnetic Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ crystal. Hall resistivity and Nernst signal both show sharp jumps at a threshold field and exhibit a clear hyste…
MnP and FeP are show complex magnetic spiral states with geometric phase contributions to the anomalous Hall effect and the topological Hall effect, where both have thermoelectric Nernst counterparts. We use state of the art first principle calculations to show that both Hall and Nernst effects are enhanced in MnP and FeP due to the temperature dependent magnetic texture. At ambient pressure the inversion breaking crystals shows a transition from a double-spiral helimagnetic phase to a topologically trivial magnetic phase. This helimagnetic structure is determined by exchange frustration and t…
Based on the Boltzmann transport theory, we study the origin of the anomalous temperature dependence of the Nernst coefficient ($ν$) due to the phonon-drag mechanism. For narrow-gap semiconductors, we find that there are two characteristic temperatures at which a noticeable peak structure appears in $ν$. Contrarily, the Seebeck coefficient ($S$) always has only one peak. While the breakdown of the Sondheimer cancellation due to the momentum-dependence of the electron relaxation time is essential for the peak in $ν$ at low $T$, the contribution of the valence band to the phonon-drag current is …
Anomalous Nernst effect generates a transverse voltage perpendicular to the temperature gradient. It has several advantages compared with the longitudinal thermoelectricity for energy conversion, such as decoupling of electronic and thermal transports, higher flexibility, and simpler lateral structure. However, a design principle beyond specific materials systems for obtaining a large anomalous Nernst conductivity (ANC) is still absent. In this work, we theoretically demonstrate that a pair of Dirac nodes under a Zeeman field manifests a double-peak anomalous Hall conductivity curve with respe…
We have studied the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) in [Fe3O4/Pt]-based heterostructures, by measuring the ANE-induced electric field with a magnetic field applied normal to the sample surface, in the perpendicular magnetized configuration, where only the ANE is expected. An ANE voltage is observed for [Fe3O4/Pt]n multilayers, and we further investigated its origin by performing measurements in [Fe3O4/Pt/Fe3O4] trilayers as a function of the Pt thickness. Our results suggest the presence of an interface-induced ANE. Despite of this ANE, the spin Seebeck effect is the dominant mechanism for the t…
The anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) is one of the most intriguing thermoelectric phenomena which has attracted growing interest both for its underlying physics and potential applications. Typically, a large ANE response is observed in magnets with pronounced magnetizations or nontrivial Berry curvature. Here, we report a significant ANE signal in compensated ferrimagnetic CoxGd1-x alloy films, which exhibit vanishingly small magnetization. In particular, we found that the polarity of ANE signal is dominated by the magnetization orientation of the transition metal Co sublattices, rather than the …

We report a measurement for the anomalous Nernst effects induced by a temperature gradient in [CoSiB/Pt] multilayer films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The Nernst voltage shows a characteristic hysteresis which reflects the magnetization of the film as in the case of the anomalous Hall effects. With a local heating geometry, we also measure the dependence of the anomalous Nernst voltage on the distance d from the heating element. It is roughly proportional to 1/d^1.3, which can be conjectured from the expected temperature gradient along the sample from the heat equation.
The anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) is a thermomagnetic phenomenon with potential applications in thermal energy harvesting. While many recent works studied the approaches to increase the ANE coefficient of materials, relatively little effort was devoted to increasing the power supplied by the effect. Here we demonstrate a nanofabricated device with record power density generated by the ANE. To accomplish this, we fabricate micrometer-sized devices in which the thermal gradient is three orders of magnitude higher than conventional macroscopic devices. In addition, we use Co/Pt multilayers, a sys…
Ferromagnetic metallic oxides have potential applications in spincaloric devices which utilize the spin property of charge carriers for interconversion of heat and electricity through the spin Seebeck or the anomalous Nernst effect or both. In this work, we synthesized polycrystalline La0.5S0.5CoO3 by microwave irradiation method and studied its transverse thermoelectric voltage (Nernst thermopower) and change in the linear dimension of the sample (Joule magnetostriction) in response to external magnetic fields. In addition, magnetization, temperature dependences of electrical resistivity, and…
PbTaSe$_2$ is a unique topological material, in which the number of nodal lines is expected to change at the structural transition between the lower temperature/pressure "L" phase and the higher temperature/pressure "H" phase. We report the anomalous Nernst effect attributed to the Berry curvature of nodal lines and its change with the structural transition. In the L phase, the Nernst coefficient ($S_{yx}$) shows the step-like magnetic field dependence reminiscent of the anomalous Nernst effect of nonmagnetic Dirac/Weyl semimetals. By applying hydrostatic pressure, we discovered that the ampli…
Anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), the generation of a transverse electric voltage by a longitudinal temperature gradient, has attracted increasing interests of researchers recently, due to its potential in the thermoelectric power conversion and close relevance to the Berry curvature of the band structure. Avoiding the stray field of ferromagnets, ANE in antiferromagnets (AFM) has the advantage of realizing highly efficient and densely integrated thermopiles. Here, we report the observation of ANE in an antiperovskite noncollinear AFM Mn3SnN experimentally, which is triggered by the enhanced Berr…
We report the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), i.e. creation of electrical voltage transverse to the direction of applied temperature gradient and magnetic field in bulk samples of La1-xNaxMnO3 (x = 0.02, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.3) whose ferromagnetic Cure temperature(TC) varies from 251 K for x = 0.02 to 310 K for x = 0.3. We measured both the magnetic field and temperature dependences of ANE. While ANE is negligible much above TC, it increases rapidly at TC and exhibits a peak just below it. The field dependence of ANE closely follows magnetization. The maximum value of ANE at TC increases from x = 0.…
Anomalous Nernst effect, a result of charge current driven by temperature gradient, provides a probe of the topological nature of materials due to its sensitivity to the Berry curvature near the Fermi level. Fe3GeTe2, one important member of the recently discovered two-dimensional van der Waals magnetic materials, offers a unique platform for anomalous Nernst effect because of its metallic and topological nature. Here, we report the observation of large anomalous Nernst effect in Fe3GeTe2. The anomalous Hall angle and anomalous Nernst angle are about 0.07 and 0.09 respectively, far larger than…
Utilizing the first-principles density functional theory calculations together with group theory analyses, we systematically investigate the spin order-dependent magneto-optical effect (MOE), anomalous Hall effect (AHE), and anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) in a recently discovered two-dimensional room-temperature ferromagnet $1T$-CrTe$_2$. We find that the spin prefers an in-plane direction by the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy calculations. The MOE, AHE, and ANE display a period of $2π/3$ when the spin rotates within the atomic plane, and they are forbidden if there exists a mirror plane …
The negative sign of the anomalous Nernst thermopower ($S_\text{ANE}$) observed in Mn-Ga ordered alloys is an attractive property for thermoelectric applications exploiting the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE); however, its origin has not been clarified. In this study, to gain insight into the negative $S_\text{ANE}$, we prepared epitaxial thin films of Mn$_{x}$Ga$_{100-x}$ with $x$ ranging from 56.2 to 71.7, and systematically investigated the structural, magnetic, and transport properties including the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and the ANE. The measured $S_\text{ANE}$ is negative for all samp…
Spin orbit torque has been intensively investigated because of its high energy efficiency in manipulating a magnetization. Although various methods for measuring the spin orbit torque have been developed so far, the measurement results often show inconsistency among the methods, implying that an electromotive force, such as Nernst effect, irrelevant to the spin orbit torque may affect the measurement results as an artifact. In this letter, we developed a unique method to distinguish the spin orbit torque and the anomalous Nernst effect. The measurement results show that the spin orbit torque c…
Thermoelectric properties of a model Skyrmion crystal were theoretically investigated, and it was found that its large anomalous Hall conductivity, corresponding to large Chern numbers induced by its peculiar spin structure leads to a large transverse thermoelectric voltage through the anomalous Nernst effect. This implies the possibility of finding good thermoelectric materials among Skyrmion systems, and thus motivates our quests for them by means of the first-principles calculations as were employed here.
The Mott relation between the electrical and thermoelectric transport coefficients normally holds for phenomena involving scattering. However, the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in ferromagnets may arise from intrinsic spin-orbit interaction. In this work, we have simultaneously measured AHE and the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) in Ga1-xMnxAs ferromagnetic semiconductor films, and observed an exceptionally large ANE at zero magnetic field. We further show that AHE and ANE share a common origin and demonstrate the validity of the Mott relation for the anomalous transport phenomena.
Resolving the structure of energy bands in transport experiments is a major challenge in condensed matter physics and material science. Sometimes, however, traditional electrical conductance or resistance measurements only provide very small signals, and thus limit the ability to obtain direct band structure information. In this case, it has been proven beneficial to employ thermoelectric measurements which are sensitive to the first derivative of the density of states with respect to energy, rather than to its value itself. Due to the large interest in topological effects these days, it is im…
The anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), a heat-charge conversion mechanism based on a magnetic metal, has been extensively studied for application in thin thermoelectric devices. The low magnetization and fabrication at room temperature are important for flexible ANE thermoelectric devices on plastic substrates. Therefore, we investigated the ANE in ferrimagnetic GdxFe100-x films with low magnetization in this study by systematically varying the Gd composition x. Although the Gd33Fe67 film with a Gd composition close to magnetic compensation composition exhibited very low magnetization, an ANE coef…
