The interplay of magnetism and topology opens up the possibility for exotic linear response effects, such as the anomalous Hall effect and the anomalous Nernst effect, which can be strongly enhanced by designing a strong Berry curvature in the electronic structure. It is even possible to utilize this to create a quantum anomalous Hall state at high temperatures by reducing the dimensionality. Magnetic Heusler compounds are a promising class of materials for this purpose because they grow in thin films, have a high Curie temperature, and their electronic structure hosts strong topological features. Here, we provide a comprehensive study of the intrinsic anomalous transport for magnetic cubic full Heusler compounds and we illustrate that several Heusler compounds outperform the best so far reported materials. The results reveal the importance of symmetries, especially mirror planes, in combination with magnetism for giant anomalous Hall and Nernst effects, which should be valid in general for linear responses (spin Hall effect, spin orbital torque, etc.) dominated by intrinsic contributions.
All-$d$ Heuslers are a category of novel compounds combining versatile functionalities such as caloric responses and spintronics with enhanced mechanical properties. Despite the promising transport properties (anomalous Hall (AHC) and anomalous Nernst (ANC) conductivities) shown in the conventional Co$_2$XY Heuslers with $p$-$d$ hybridization, the all-$d$ Heuslers with only $d$-$d$ hybridization open a new horizon to search for new candidates with outstanding transport properties. In this work, we evaluate the AHC and ANC for thermodynamically stable ferro/ferri-magnetic all-$d$-metal regular …
We have performed systematic density functional calculations and evaluated thermoelectric properties, See- beck coefficient and anomalous Nernst coefficient of half-Heusler comounds CoMSb(M=Sc, Ti, V, Cr, and Mn). The carrier concentration dependence of Seebeck coefficients in nonmagnetic compounds are in good agreement with experimental values. We found that the half-metallic ferromagnetic CoMnSb show large anomalous Nernst effect originating from Berry curvature at the Brillouin zone boundary. These results help to understanding for the mechanism of large anomalous Nernst coefficient and giv…
Applying a temperature gradient in a magnetic material generates a voltage that is perpendicular to both the heat flow and the magnetization. This is the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) which was thought to be proportional to the value of the magnetization for a long time. However, more generally, the ANE has been predicted to originate from a net Berry curvature of all bands near the Fermi level. Subsequently, a large anomalous Nernst thermopower has recently been observed in topological materials with no net magnetization but large net Berry curvature around E$_F$. These experiments clearly fa…
Weyl semimetals are characterized by the presence of massless band dispersion in momentum space. When a Weyl semimetal meets magnetism, large anomalous transport properties emerge as a consequence of its topological nature. Here, using $in-situ$ spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy combined with $ab\ initio$ calculations, we visualize the spin-polarized Weyl cone and flat-band surface states of ferromagnetic Co$_2$MnGa films with full remanent magnetization. We demonstrate that the anomalous Hall and Nernst conductivities systematically grow when the magnetization-induced massiv…
Co2MnAl has been predicted to have Weyl points near Fermi level which is expected to give rise to exotic transverse transport properties such as large anomalous Hall(AHE) and Nernst effects(ANE) due to large Berry curvature. In this study, the effect of Fermi level position and atomic ordering on AHE and ANE in Co2MnAl1-xSix were studied systematically. The Co2MnAl film keeps B2-disordred structure regardless of annealing temperature, which results in much smaller anomalous Hall conductivity sigma_xy and transverse Peltier coefficient sigma_xy than those calculated for L21-ordered Co2MnAl. Our…
The anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), a thermoelectric phenomenon in magnetic materials, has potential for novel energy harvesting applications because its orthogonal relationship between the temperature gradient and the electric field enables us to utilize the large area of non-flat heat sources. In this study, the required thermopower of ANE for practical energy harvesting applications is evaluated in simulations of electric power obtainable from ANE using a low-temperature heat source. A strategy for finding magnetic materials having large ANEs is proposed, which suggests that a large ANE orig…
Simultaneous achievement of large anomalous Nernst effect and reduced thermal conductivity in sintered polycrystalline topological Heusler ferromagnets
Manganese-rich Heusler compounds are attracting much interest in the context of spin transfer torque and rare-earth free hard magnets. Here we give a comprehensive overview of the magnetic properties of non-centrosymmetric cubic Mn$_2$-based Heusler materials, which are characterized by an antiparallel coupling of magnetic moments on Mn atoms. Such a ferrimagnetic order leads to the emergence of new properties that are absent in ferromagnetic centrosymmetric Heusler structures. In terms of the band structure calculations, we explain the formation of this magnetic order and the Curie temperatur…
Based on first-principles electronic structure calculations, we analyze the chemical and magnetic mechanisms stabilizing the cubic phase in Fe$_2$-based Heusler materials, which were previously predicted to be tetragonal when being chemically ordered. In agreement with recent experimental data, we found that these compounds crystallize within the so-called "inverted" cubic Heusler structure perturbed by a certain portion of the intrinsic chemical disorder. Understanding these mechanisms is a necessary step to guide towards the successful future synthesis of the stable Fe$_2$-based tetragonal p…
We predict a large anomalous Nernst effect in the inverse Heusler compensated ferrimagnets Ti$_2$Mn$X$ ($X$=Al,Ga,In) with vanishing net magnetic moments. Though the net magnetic moment is zero, the Weyl points in these systems lead to a large anomalous Nernst conductivity (ANC) due to the lack of a magnetic sublattice that inverses the sign of the Berry curvature. In comparison to the noncollinear antiferromagnets Mn$_3$Sn and Mn$_3$Ge, the high ANC stems almost entirely from the Weyl points in this class of compounds, and thus, it is topologically protected. This work shows for the first tim…
We investigate the structural stability and magnetic properties of cubic, tetragonal and hexagonal phases of Mn3Z (Z=Ga, Sn and Ge) Heusler compounds using first-principles density-functional theory. We propose that the cubic phase plays an important role as an intermediate state in the phase transition from the hexagonal to the tetragonal phases. Consequently, Mn3Ga and Mn3Ge behave differently from Mn3Sn, because the relative energies of the cubic and hexagonal phases are different. This result agrees with experimental observations from these three compounds. The weak ferromagnetism of the h…
Based on high throughput density functional theory calculations, we performed systematic screening for spin-gapless semiconductors (SGSs) in quaternary Heusler alloys XX 0 YZ (X, X 0 , and Y are transition metal elements without Tc, and Z is one of B, Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb, P, As, Sb, and Bi). Following the empirical rule, we focused on compounds with 21, 26, or 28 valence electrons, resulting in 12, 000 possible chemical compositions. After systematically evaluating the thermodynamic, mechanical, and dynamical stabilities, we successfully identified 70 stable SGSs, confirmed by explicit …
The composition dependence of the structural, magnetic, and transport properties of epitaxially grown Mn-Co-Ga films were investigated. The crystal structure was observed to change from tetragonal to cubic as the Co content was increased. In terms of the dependence of saturation magnetization on the Co content, relatively small value was obtained for the Mn$_{2.3}$Co$_{0.4}$Ga$_{1.3}$ film at a large {\it K}$_\textrm u$ value of 9.2 Merg/cm$^3$. Electrical resistivity of Mn-Co-Ga films was larger than that of pure Mn-Ga film. The maximum value of the resistivity was 490 $μΩ$cm for Mn$_{2.2}$Co…
Elastic constants and their derived properties of various cubic Heusler compounds were calculated using first-principles density functional theory. To begin with, Cu$_2$MnAl is used as a case study to explain the interpretation of the basic quantities and compare them with experiments. The main part of the work focuses on Co$_2$-based compounds that are Co$_2$Mn$M$ with the main group elements $M=$~Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb, Sb, Bi, and Co$_2TM$ with the main group elements Si or Ge, and the $3d$ transition metals $T=$~Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, and Fe. It is found that many properties of Heusler com…
A comprehensive study of the total energy of manganese-rich Heusler compounds using density functional theory is presented. Starting from a large set of cubic parent systems, the response to tetragonal distortions is studied in detail. We single out the systems that remain cubic from those that most likely become tetragonal. The driving force of the tetragonal distortion and its effect on the magnetic properties, especially where they deviate from the Slater--Pauling rule, as well as the trends in the Curie temperatures, are highlighted. By means of partial densities of states, the electronic …
The present work reports on the new soft ferromagnetic Heusler phases Fe2NiGe, Fe2CuGa, and Fe2CuAl, which in previous theoretical studies have been predicted to exist in a tetragonal regular Heusler structure. Together with the known phases Fe2CoGe and Fe2NiGa these materials have been synthesized and characterized by powder XRD, 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, SQUID and EDX measurements. In particular Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to monitor the degree of local atomic order/disorder and to estimate magnetic moments at the Fe sites from the hyperfine fields. It is shown that in contrast to th…
Using first principles calculations based on density functional theory, we study the geometric, electronic, and magnetic properties of Pt, Ni and Co-based half Heusler alloys, namely, Pt$BC$, Ni$BC$ and Co$BC$ ($B$ = Cr, Mn and Fe; $C$ = Al, Si, P, S, Ga, Ge, As, Se, In, Sn, Sb and Te). We calculate the formation energy of these alloys in various crystal symmetries, which include, the (face-centered) cubic $C1_{b}$ ($F\bar{4}$3m), orthorhombic ($Pnma$), as well as hexagonal ($P\bar{6}2m$ and $P6_{3}/mmc$) structures. It has been observed that out of all the 108 structures, studied here, energe…
The large magnetocaloric effect (MCE) observed in Ni-Mn based shape-memory Heusler alloys put them forward to use in magnetic refrigeration technology. It is associated with a first-order magnetostructural (martensitic) phase transition. We conducted a comprehensive study of the MCE for the off-stoichiometric Heusler alloy Ni$_{2.2}$Mn$_{0.8}$Ga in the vicinity of its first-order magnetostructural phase transition. We found a reversible MCE under repeated magnetic field cycles. The reversible behavior can be attributed to the small thermal hysteresis of the martensitic phase transition. Based …
Using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory, we probe the electronic and magnetic properties of X$_{2}$PtGa (X being Cr, Mn, Fe, Co) Heusler alloys. Our calculations predict that all these systems possess inverse Heusler alloy structure in their respective ground states. Application of tetragonal distortion leads to lowering of energy with respect to the cubic phase for all the materials. The equilibrium volumes of both the phases are nearly the same. These results of our calculations indicate that all these materials are prone to undergo martensite transition, as ha…
With a view to the design of hard magnets without rare earths we explore the possibility of large magnetocrystalline anisotropy energies in Heusler compounds that are unstable with respect to a tetragonal distortion. We consider the Heusler compounds Fe$_2$YZ with Y = (Ni, Co, Pt), and Co$_2$YZ with Y = (Ni, Fe, Pt) where, in both cases, Z = (Al, Ga, Ge, In, Sn). We find that for the Co$_2$NiZ, Co$_2$PtZ, and Fe$_2$PtZ families the cubic phase is always, at $T=0$, unstable with respect to a tetragonal distortion, while, in contrast, for the Fe$_2$NiZ and Fe$_2$CoZ families this is the case for…
We report on the high-temperature (350 K <T< 1000 K) thermoelectric properties of the ternary compounds LuNiSb (cubic) and LuNiSn (orthorhombic) and a composite material (LuNiSb)$_{0.5}$(LuNiSn)$_{0.5}$. The electrical conductivity in LuNiSn is metallic, while it is semiconducting-like in LuNiSb. The Seebeck coefficient reaches -5.5 $μ$V/K at 700 K for the former compound and 66 $μ$V/K at 607 K for the latter one. The composite sample (LuNiSb)$_{0.5}$(LuNiSn)$_{0.5}$ constructed from orthorhombic matrix with cubic inclusions combines the electrical conductivity of LuNiSn with the thermoelectri…
Polycrystalline Ni2.18Mn0.82Ga Heusler alloys with a coupled magnetostructural transition are studied by differential scanning calorimetry, magnetic and resistivity measurements. Coupling of the magnetic and structural subsystems results in unusual magnetic features of the alloy. These uncommon magnetic properties of Ni2.18Mn0.82Ga are attributed to the first-order structural transition from a tetragonal ferromagnetic to a cubic paramagnetic phase.
Ab initio Prediction of Mechanical, Electronic, Magnetic and Transport Properties of Bulk and Heterostructure of a Novel Fe-Cr based Full Heusler Chalcogenide
On the basis of the density functional calculations in combination with the supercell approach, we report on a complete study of the influences of atomic arrangement and Ni substitution for Al on the ground state structural and magnetic properties for Fe$_2$Ni$_{1+x}$Al$_{1-x}$ Heusler alloys. We discuss systematically the competition between five cubic Heusler-type structures formed by shuffles of Fe and Ni atoms to reveal routes for improving the phase stability and magnetic properties, in particular magnetocrystalline anisotropy~(MAE). We predict that in case of Fe$_2$NiAl the ground state …
Using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory, we have studied the mechanical, electronic, and magnetic properties of Heusler alloys, namely, Ni$_{2}BC$ and Co$_{2}BC$ ($B$ = Sc, Ti, V, Cr and Mn as well as Y, Zr, Nb, Mo and Tc; $C$ = Ga and Sn). On the basis of electronic structure (density of states) and mechanical properties (tetragonal shear constant), as well as magnetic interactions (Heisenberg exchange coupling parameters), we probe the properties of these materials in detail. We calculate the formation energy of these alloys in the (face-centered) cubic austeni…
Heusler compounds, in both cubic and hexagonal polymorphs, exhibit a remarkable range of electronic, magnetic, elastic, and topological properties, rivaling that of the transition metal oxides. To date, research on these quantum materials has focused primarily on bulk magnetic and thermoelectric properties or on applications in spintronics. More broadly, however, Heuslers provide a platform for discovery and manipulation of emergent properties at well-defined crystalline interfaces. Here, motivated by advances in the epitaxial growth of layered Heusler heterostructures, I present a vision for …
Using \textit{ab initio} calculation, we investigate systematically the structural and electronic properties of Ni$_{2}$Nb$_{1+x}$Sn$_{1-x}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.25, 0.50). Here, projector augmented wave approach (PAW) implemented in the Vienna \textit{ab initio} simulation package (VASP) within generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange-correlation functional has been used. In this article, it is reported that though Ni$_{2}$NbSn and Ni$_{2}$Nb$_{1.25}$Sn$_{0.75}$ have no structural transformation, Ni$_{2}$Nb$_{1.5}$Sn$_{0.5}$ can transform to tetragonal structure from cubic L2$_{1}$ ph…
Effect of Co substitution on Mn$_3$Ga is investigated using first-principles study for structural and magnetic properties. Without Co, ferrimagnetic Heusler compound Mn3Ga is in tetragonal phase. With Co substitution, depending on Co concentration (x) Mn$_3$Ga prefers tetragonal (cubic) phase when x \leq 0.5 (x \geq 0.5). Ferrimagnetism is robust regardless of x in both phases. While magnetic moments of two Mn do not vary significantly with x, Co magnetic moment in two phases exhibit different behaviors, leading to distinct features in total magnetic moment (M_{tot}). When x \leq 0.5, in tetra…
This paper shows the correlation between chemical order, lattice strains and magnetic properties of Heusler Co2FeAl films epitaxially grown on MgO(001). A detailed magnetic characterization has been performed using vector field magnetometery combined with numerical Stoner-Wohlfarth analysis. We demonstrate the presence of three types of in-plane anisotropies: one biaxial, as expected for the cubic symmetry, and other two uniaxial ones. The three anisotropies show different behavior with the annealing temperature. The biaxial anisotropy shows a monotonous increase. The uniaxial anisotropy, para…
In the present work, the aspects of magnetic and structural properties of Ni-Mn-Ga alloys are described in the framework of fist-principles approach and mapped into ternary composition diagrams. The stable atomic arrangement and magnetic alignment for compositions with cubic austenite and tetragonal martensite structures across phase diagrams are predicted. It is shown that Ni- and Ga-rich compositions possess the regular Heusler structure in contrast to Mn-rich compositions with inverse Heusler structure as favorable one. Compositions with unstable austenite structure are concentrated in the …
A large conventional magnetocaloric effect at the second order magnetic transition in cubic Ni2Mn1.4In0.6 Heusler alloy is reported. The isothermal magnetization at 2K shows a huge ground state magnetic moment of about 6.17 μB/f.u. The theoretical calculations show that the origin of the large magnetic moment in cubic Ni2Mn1.4In0.6 results from the strong ferromagnetic interaction between Mn- Ni and Mn-Mn sublattices. The experimental magnetic moment is in excellent agreement with the moment calculated from the theory. The large magnetic moment gives rise to considerably high adiabatic tempera…
Resolving the structure of energy bands in transport experiments is a major challenge in condensed matter physics and material science. Sometimes, however, traditional electrical conductance or resistance measurements only provide very small signals, and thus limit the ability to obtain direct band structure information. In this case, it has been proven beneficial to employ thermoelectric measurements which are sensitive to the first derivative of the density of states with respect to energy, rather than to its value itself. Due to the large interest in topological effects these days, it is im…
In the present work, the elastic constants and derived properties of tetragonal and cubic Heusler compounds were calculated using the high accuracy of the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FPLAPW). To find the criteria required for an accurate calculation, the consequences of increasing the numbers of $k$-points and plane waves on the convergence of the calculated elastic constants were explored. Once accurate elastic constants were calculated, elastic anisotropies, sound velocities, Debye temperatures, malleability, and other measurable physical properties were determined for th…
The anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) and anomalous Nernst conductivity (ANC) are two prominent transport phenomena in ferromagnetic materials of a topological nature. Based on first-principles calculations, we evaluated the AHC and ANC of 35 cubic ferromagnetic antiperovskites (APVs) and observed giant AHC and ANC as large as 1128 S/cm and 6.27 AK-1m-1 for Co3LiN and Co3PtN, respectively. Detailed analysis reveals that the origin of giant ANC can be attributed to the occurrence of Weyl nodes near the Fermi energy, as demonstrated for Co3PtN. Interestingly, both the magnitude and sign of AHC a…
First-principles calculations are used in order to investigate phonon anomalies in non-magnetic and magnetic Heusler alloys. Phonon dispersions for several systems in their cubic L2$\mathrm{_1}$ structure were obtained along the [110] direction. We consider compounds which exhibit phonon instabilities and compare them with their stable counterparts. The analysis of the electronic structure allows us to identify the characteristic features leading to structural instabilities. The phonon dispersions of the unstable compounds show that, while the acoustic modes tend to soften, the optical modes d…
We put a spotlight on the exceptional magnetic properties of the metamagnetic Heusler alloy (Ni,Co)-Mn-Sn by means of first principles simulations. In the energy landscape we find a multitude of local minima, which belong to different ferrimagnetic states and are close in total magnetization and energy. All these magnetic states correspond to the local high spin state of the Mn atoms with different spin alignments and are related to the magnetic properties of Mn. Compared to pure Mn, the magneto-volume coupling is reduced by Ni, Co, and Sn atoms in the lattice and no local low-spin Mn states a…
Magnetic frustration in ferromagnetic metallic systems is unusual due to the long-range and symmetric nature of the exchange interactions. In this work we prove that it is possible to obtain a highly frustrated ferromagnetic phase in a multi-sublattices cubic structure through a fine tuning of the magnetic interactions. This peculiar state is achieved in Ni-Mn-(In, Sn) Heusler alloys and results in the effective decoupling of their two intertwined ferromagnetic sublattices. One sublattice is ferromagnetic long range ordered below the macroscopic Curie temperature (TC ) whereas the second one r…
The electronic structure, magnetism and phase stability of Pt2-xMn1+xGa(x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1) alloys are studied by first-principle calculations. The calculations reveal that a potential magnetic martensitic transformation can be expected in all the series. In addition, a large magnetic-field-induced strain is likely to appear in Pt2-xMn1+xGa(x=0, 0.25, 0.75, 1) alloys. The electronic structure calculations indicate that the tetragonal phase is stabilized upon the distortion because of the pseudogap formation at the Fermi Level. The magnetic structure is also investigated and the total magn…
We report on the influence of the improved L21 ordering degree on the magnetic properties of Co2MnSi Heusler films. Different fractions of the L21 phase are obtained by different post-growth annealing temperatures ranging from 350 degC to 500 degC. Room temperature magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements reveal an increase of the coercivity at an intermediate annealing temperature of 425 degC, which is a fingerprint of an increased number of pinning centers at this temperature. Furthermore, Brillouin light scattering studies show that the improvement of the L21 order in the Co2MnSi films is c…
Off-stoichiometric Ni$_2$MnIn Heusler alloys have drawn recent attention due to their large magnetocaloric entropy change associated with the first-order magneto-structural transition. Here we present crystal structural, calorimetric and magnetic studies of three compositions. Temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction shows clear structural transition from a 6M modulated monoclinic to a L2$_1$ cubic. A significant enhancement of relative cooling power (RCP) was achieved by tuning the magnetic and structural stability through minor compositional changes, with the measured results quantitatively c…
On the basis of density functional calculations, we report on a comprehensive study of the influences of atomic arrangement and Ni substitution for Al on the ground state structural and magnetic properties for Fe$_2$Ni$_{1+x}$Al$_{1-x}$ Heusler alloys. We discuss systematically the competition between five Heusler-type structures formed by shuffles of Fe and Ni atoms and their thermodynamic stability. All~Ni-rich Fe$_2$Ni$_{1+x}$Al$_{1-x}$ tend to decompose into a dual-phase mixture consisting of Fe$_2$NiAl and~FeNi. The~successive replacement of Ni by Al leads to a change of ground state stru…
We report remarkably low residual resistivity, giant residual resistivity ratio, free-electron-like Hall resistivity and high mobility ($\approx$ 10$^4$ cm$^2$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$) charge transport in epitaxial films of Co$_2$MnSi and Co$_2$FeSi grown on (001) SrTiO$_3$. This unusual behavior is not observed in films deposited on other cubic oxide substrates of comparable lattice parameters. The scaling of the resistivity with thickness of the films allow extraction of interface conductance, which can be attributed to a layer of oxygen vacancies confined within 1.9 nm of the interface as revealed …
A large Berry curvature in the vicinity of the Fermi energy is required in order to obtain a large anomalous Hall and Nernst effect. This Berry curvature can be induced by Weyl points and gapped nodal lines. One of the possible mechanisms takes place in systems with a symmetry group where mirror planes lead to protected nodal line structures. When these mirror symmetries are broken, e. g. via fixing a magnetization direction, a gap in the former nodal line can create Weyl points and a large Berry curvature along the gapped lines. In this work we study this effect in a minimal effective model a…
First-principles calculations using the plane-wave pseudopotential method within the generalized gradient approximation method were performed to study the pressure dependence of the structural, elastic, electronic and optical properties for the half-Heusler compounds ScPtSb and YPtSb in a cubic MgAgAs-type structure. The calculations were performed with the inclusion of spin-orbit coupling. The calculated equilibrium lattice parameters are in good agreement with the available experimental and theoretical values. The crystal rigidity and mechanical stability were discussed using the elastic con…
Single-crystalline membranes of functional materials enable the tuning of properties via extreme strain states; however, conventional routes for producing membranes require the use of sacrificial layers and chemical etchants, which can both damage the membrane and limit the ability to make them ultrathin. Here we demonstrate the epitaxial growth of the cubic Heusler compound GdPtSb on graphene-terminated Al$_2$O$_3$ substrates. Despite the presence of the graphene interlayer, the Heusler films have epitaxial registry to the underlying sapphire, as revealed by x-ray diffraction, reflection high…
Investigations of the Effects of Pressure on the Structural and Electronic Properties of Co$_2$VZ (Z = Al, Be) Full Heusler Alloy: A Comparative Study Using DFT
Tailoring and controlling magnetic properties is an important factor for materials design. Here, we present a case study for Ni-based Heusler compounds of the type Ni$_2$YZ with Y = Mn, Fe, Co and Z = B, Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn based on first principles electronic structure calculations. These compounds are interesting since the materials properties can be quite easily tuned by composition and many of them possess a non-cubic ground state being a prerequisite for a finite magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MAE). We discuss systematically the influence of doping at the Y and Z sublattice as well of …
In metallic ferromagnets, the Berry curvature of underlying quasiparticles can cause an electric voltage perpendicular to both magnetization and an applied temperature gradient, a phenomenon called the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE). Here, we report the observation of a giant ANE in the full-Heusler ferromagnet Co$_2$MnGa, reaching $S_{yx}\sim -6$ $μ$V/K at room $T$, one order of magnitude larger than the maximum value reported for a magnetic conductor. With increasing temperature, the transverse thermoelectric conductivity or Peltier coefficient $α_{yx}$ shows a crossover between $T$-linear an…
In this work, polycrystalline NiCrGa half Heusler alloy, which is predicted to be half-metallic ferromagnet from first principles calculations, has been synthesized by arc meting technique and its structural, magnetic as well as the electronic properties have been studied. The measured x-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern shows the signature of a disordered structure. From the magnetization measurements, there is no evidence of ferromagnetic ordering observed in this system down to the lowest temperature studied. Instead, the system shows the signature of an antiferromagnetic ordering at very low t…
